These Islands Off Canada’s Atlantic Coast Are Part of France

"A shiny three-floor museum in Saint-Pierre that details centuries of history. It showcases the arrival of fishermen from the Basque, Norman, and Breton regions of France, the British and French battle for possession of the islands, and Saint-Pierre's role during Prohibition. It also houses the only guillotine used in North America." - Hillary Richard

I mainly use the archival services and have not been to the museum which is temporarily closed. The staff at the archives are amazing and are in charge of a massive amount of primary sources, some of which was severly damaged years ago in a terrible fire. They are amazing.

Very nice museum & our walking tour of St. Pierre was excellent. Eric our guide was so knowledgeable about the history of the island & the architecture. Highly recommended.

Such a nice museum. Only complaint is a lack of exhibits it’s quite small for an area with such a rich heritage. I would love to experience the walking tours next time!

Awesome museum - one of three in Saint Pierre if you count Sailor's Island/Isle of Dogs. They compliment each other with the information they provide on local history. It's great how the building is so accessible for those with mobility challenges, and they have free wifi so you can use QR codes in the exhibits to get English translations.

Very interesting exhibits. Well worth seeing. Informative and helps you understand this territory.

The museum is well laid out. A portion is dedicated to archeological findings. More recent history, 1900s on, is also well shown. The other major component relates to the initial beneficial effects of prohibition followed by the dramatic decline in the economy once prohibition was repealed. Much of the information is translated into English. Using their WiFi I was able to fill in the gaps with Google Translate, using the camera function, that worked very well. Worth a visit. The museum also organizes a guided tour of the town as well as Île aux Marins. The guide, Kieren, was excellent. He has an excellent command of English.

Exhibits are really interesting! There is a lot of reading involved but if you're interested in the subject it doesn't matter! Has 3 levels that are nicely layed out! A pretty good stop in trying to understand Saint-Pierre culture!

Really worthwhile to visit to get historic context and because it’s well done and the building has a great view. What’s not to like!
