Interview: Molly Baz on her New Cookbook, `More is More` | Eater

"A neighborhood market used for stocking fresh herbs and snacks, where shoppers load up on bunches of dill and cilantro and buy items like spongy dried apples favored for casual snacking; presented as a practical, well-stocked place for sourcing produce and pantry items." - Amy McCarthy

Please go and support them after the fire! They are still standing strong and serving the community of Altadena and Pasadena! Buy some fresh sandwiches and snacks. Love the yogurt drinks and salad bowls and I always find new food there 😋

Armine Martirosyan

Google
Terrible store. The products are often rotten, expired, or moldy — especially the fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods. It’s clear that no one checks the quality of what they sell. The employees are extremely rude, unfriendly, and unprofessional. They talk down to customers, ignore basic questions, and act like they don’t want to help at all. There is no respect or courtesy — just bad attitudes all around. This kind of treatment is unacceptable. There are many better markets nearby with fresh products and polite staff. I will never come back here, and I strongly advise others to stay away.

Tigran Grigoryan

Google
The grocery is always fresh here. Staff is friendly. Our family enjoys shopping here.

Nara Martirosyan

Google
Great place to shop! We love all their products, especially deli and cold meat! Excellent variety, super helpful staff members!

Carter Andrues

Google
Super bummed I have spent 34 years of my life, as an Altadena resident, without going inside this market. Wow. This is truly a special place. Lavash options to adore, pickled turnips, wonderful meat and cheese counters, imported delicacies, hand selected and sorted mixed nuts, produce to die for, the list goes on. This is more than a market. This is a cultural escape. Please keep doing what you are doing and please keep supporting Altadena. You guys are loved more than you’ll ever know.

Google
Great customer service, great produce section, the meat section is super clean and organized. Friendly staff

Google
Long overdue review. Armen Market is my favorite grocery in the area. They always have everything I need for both cooking and baking. It looks small, but they have an extensive selection of groceries, especially if you're looking for more European/Armenian/Middle Eastern/Mediterranean selections. You can tell that whoever does their inventory knows how to cook! The prices are good, comparable to corporate stores like Ralph's/Stater Bros/Trader Joe's. The cashiers are always very sweet, too. I highly recommend them if you're in the area and want to support a small, local grocer. Wish small business grocers like this were more the norm :(

Google
Good market for some of the middle eastern goods. A bit more expensive then Super Kings. But nice to dodge the busy ones.

Yelp
Was in the area and decided to do some shopping . Ordered some sandwiches also, Tried their Roast Beef sandwich and not ganna lie , was so delicious with fresh bread . Definitely coming back to try different items also.

Yelp
Nice place for a sandwich great coffee friendly deli workers. Great food all around, genuine place.

Armine M.

Yelp
This is the worst store I have ever been to. The products are rotten, expired, fruits and vegetables are moldy, and the meat is questionable. There is absolutely no quality control! The staff are extremely rude and disrespectful -- they speak to customers as if they're doing them a favor. There is zero understanding of what customer service means. The behavior, especially from the owner, is downright hostile. Such treatment and poor quality are a disgrace -- especially for a store representing the Armenian community. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Terrible experience. I will never come back.

Yelp
We recently went to Armen market to grab some meat and I am so glad we did! We got a little bit of everything - chicken and beef lule, lamb, and chicken kebabs. We grilled everything that same day. Everything was so fresh and flavorful when we cooked it at home -- I couldn't get enough! We tried the bulgur with vermicelli noodles to cook at home which was honestly a nice change from the standard rice that I normally cook. They have sandwiches here too that are made to order, but we didn't get any this time. Perhaps that's something we'll have to try on our next visit. Overall, would def recommend coming here for some Mediterranean eats!

Amber G.

Yelp
My favorite local Armenian market place! They have an amazingly fresh produce section and I always pick up something from their premade section like tabuloi and itch. Great selection of products from Armenia and world wide at very reasonable prices. But it wouldn't be a visit without heading to their butcher counter. I'm always helped by the same gentleman who is such a delight! Today I picked up their Labanese style Lula Kebob for a BBQ that will sure to be a hit! I am so happy places like Armen's Market are still here in the community

Yelp
This is an Armenian market with Greek influenced foods and flavors. You will find unique sauces and spices to use in your cooking. Small produce and meat section. The frozen section carried meat dumplings and pieroshky which are large bread like items filled with meat or vegetables. Nice staff. Parking in their lot or street parking.

Christine S.

Yelp
Great selection of ingredients and produce. I felt like I was in Bristol Farm by the selection and variety of produce and meats!

Antoinette B.

Yelp
TODAY I was yelled at by the OWNER because I said the strawberries I Purchased were rotten. He was unbelievably RUDE, NASTY and probably RACIST. He kept badgering me - It was unbelievable. There have been other incidents with expiration dates, and old produce that they sell. They NEVER stand by their products. Yes! ALL the workers are RUDE- ( except for the Butcher) ! There is no need to put up with this because there are many markets in the area to support. I don't know what their problem is but they give the Armenian Community a Bad Name. I will never step foot in that market- EVER!! (They don't deserve a star - I give it to the Butcher)
google avatar

Bri R.

Yelp
Great neighborhood market with lots of fresh goodies. Always pick up my Sumac and Za'atar here.
google avatar

Namir K.

Yelp
I like Armen. They are not close by but worth the trip. Their produce section is fresh but they shine in everything Middle eastern. Their jambon de Paris is also half the price than elsewhere and their pita bread always fresh. At one buck for a small package, you can't beat it. Not five stars because some items are more expensive than elsewhere and it feels a little cramped so it certainly not a shopping "destination " but Armen gets the job done if you need labne, spices or other Armenian items. PS: The parking is a little tight but there is plenty of place on the street.

Julie K.

Yelp
Everything from meats to veggies Excellent, professional and clean. Great customer service.

Kgirl K.

Yelp
Found a real gem of a store for great meats, lavash, pita and seasonings! Really nice and helpful folks here too! Picked up some saffron too! The real good stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
The shrub is long gone and the parking lot exit is a little safer. But the problem now is...I'm addicted. Armen Market is even better than it was 6 years ago. They've added prepared salads and dips that are superb. If you're looking for an unusual ingredient, I bet you'll find it here so glad to have it in the hood.
google avatar

Shirley S.

Yelp
I go for their small meat department. Small, but extremely high quality meats. The department staff is friendly and they make me feel like an old friend. I'm always greeted with a smile when at the checkout registers. This market is relatively small, but it's jammed-packed with delightful things to discover and find. I suggest that you visit for yourself. Stroll around and be amazed at the produce, the teas, desserts and the exotic foods and delicacies. Walk into this friendly, inviting and fun spot. Walk out a repeat customer.
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
One of my favorite markets. Love coming here for the produce. Very fresh and of amazing quality. Great selection of spices and specialty items. The store is well maintained. The staff is friendly and happy to help.
google avatar

Sarvenaz H.

Yelp
Trust me if I am paying hundreds of dollars I don't mind paying an extra 20 cents to not to have my shopping bag full to a point that I can't carry it and avoid all my groceries spilling in the car every single time.
google avatar

Kira S.

Yelp
I have been going to this market for many many years. Love the food and people. I hope you all will enjoy it too: fresh vegetables, high-qualityand meats.
google avatar

Bree -.

Yelp
Love this place! Great variety, small town market vibes and great customer service. I've been here a few times now and get something different everytime. Love that I can find my favorite Middle Eastern food here
google avatar

Laleh B.

Yelp
this place is the best! they have everything you can imagine! the quality is great and the people are so kind and helpful! one of the best middle eastern grocery stores in the area!

Linda C.

Yelp
This is an amazing market w unusual breads, meats, condiments, deli counter and fruits and vegetables. Old world market feel. Pleasant cashiers.

Yelp
4 Star service! 3 Stars for deli food (see below) This place is tucked up in the hills, north of the 210 Freeway, so it's really for people in the neighborhood, but if you're in the area and need to grab some specialty items, this is a great place to stock up. As a small market, they have a nice selection of some specialty Armenian, Russian, and Greek items. You can order hot food (cooked in store) in the back/upstairs. The service there was fantastic, and people were super nice! BUT I THINK I ARRIVED AT THE WRONG TIME (weekday after lunch) I had the kebab from the meat counter. No pickles. Just hummus, and tabbouleh. Chicken WELL SEASONED, WELL COOKED, juicy, nicely seared. Really nicely cooked tomato! (it's possible to cook it poorly, or burn it too much) The rice was mediocre at best - which was disappointing, because they were very generous with the portion. One piece of dried pita. It was like it had been left in an oven. Almost like a cracker. Hard, but not crunchy? I was glad that there was so much rice. I couldn't even eat the pita - bummed about that. There are a couple of tables on the side of the supermarket you can eat at, but be warned, this is a SMOKING AREA, so if it bothers you, you might want to take the food for a picnic to the park. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I think this place is probably much better on weekends at lunch. I'll be back to try it again. I'll be back to buy some meats to cook myself and some other treats too!
google avatar

Larissa R.

Yelp
Fresh fruit and veggies, great Armenian staples. They have nice frozen cheese boureg if you don't want to go thru the trouble of making it from scratch.
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
Clean local grocery store with a variety of products. Butcher and deli sections serve up great pre-marinated, fresh meats and a variety of cold cuts, among other delicacies. Produce is fresh and better quality than I've seen at my local big name stores. I especially loved the selection of dried fruits and nuts. I don't live nearby, but will make a point of returning soon.

Stevie B.

Yelp
Great ethnic market with lots of options! Good selection of produce and I love their deli counter. Lots of dried fruit options and prepared and marinated meats to choose from. Have made very tasty kabobs with their meat on several occasions.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
What a fantastic market! We wanted to try and make Mediterranean food and this was the perfect store. Everything we needed (and then some) to create a

Nicole S.

Yelp
I have been shopping here for over a year and every time I come they always have the most beautiful, fresh, and delicious produce. Hawaiian papaya, golden kiwis, figs, organic fennel, organic brocollini, radicchio, mixed greens, and at the best prices anywhere. They carry the heirloom eggs, Boars head lunch meats, all sorts of European sweets, and so much more. Everyone that works there is helpful and goes above and beyond to make sure that market is always stocked up and clean. I really appreciate the friendly faces and care they show to all their customers. It's a very welcoming place.

Mike C.

Yelp
Great local market with lots of selection and many quirks! Snag good items when you see them, they may not restock the same brands later once they sell out! This includes meat and cheese in the deli too! The produce is really nice and fresh and has flavor. Great selection of fruit and seasonal tropical fruit.

Magister I.

Yelp
Nice selection of Armenian/Mid-Eastern foods and condiments. Well-stocked shelves and vegetables seemed fresh. I did not try the prepared foods.
google avatar

Mark Edward H.

Yelp
Small friendly family run market with an excellent selection of American and Armenian goods. Excellent deli counter and meat shop, and surprisingly robust produce section.
google avatar

Summer D.

Yelp
I walked in here on accident but so happy I did. Good selection of middle eastern items that are hard to find elsewhere. Good meat selection, cheese selection and the wine selection was better than across the street where I thought I was going lol. The workers here are very nice, I didn't have any questions but I wouldn't hesitate to ask if I did next time I go. They had good prices and deals on produce as well. Id be happy to support this business again

Yelp
Local Armenian market located in North Pasadena and a frequent spot we order catering at for work lunches. I would definitely recommend the lamb chop and chicken thighs, less so the chicken breast which tends to dry out while they cook it on the skewers. We usually add babaganoush and tabouli salad, both are pretty good here (especially the baba which has a nice smoky flavor). The meat catering orders start at a minimum of 3 lbs and do not include pitas (though they should be included in my opinion). Definitely call ahead and give them a timeframe for pickup. The prices are mostly in line with other markets in the area. Upon my last stop-in here I found the aisles to be super clean and wide and the service mostly friendly. They sell some interesting specialty items (ie. we love the Dadu ice cream here haha) as well as some fresh treats and baked breads. I would recommend checking out Armen market, especially for catering orders in the Pasadena area.
google avatar

Oren M.

Yelp
they have great prices for a variety of middle eastern goods that arent available elsewhere. Of note is the variety of tahini that is orders of magnitude better than any of the garbage that whole foods and trader joes sells.
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
**update** I don't buy meat here anymore. They've changed their supplier (I'm guessing) and it definitely shows... The rest of their stuff is still great.. Too bad about the meat. I have a lot of large gatherings. Hopefully management sees this: last 2 times I bought meat (lamb and pork), and the last time my brother in law bought it: it was terrible, not even close to before. I'm back to driving to North Hollywood for meat...
google avatar

Lala M.

Yelp
Great prices, lots of specialty foods. But the isles are super narrow, making it frustrating when it's crowded. The deli counter is good. The produce is fresh, and they have bundles of fresh unique greens each season. The meat counter unfortunately I would steer clear from. Last time I had to throw the meat out, it smelled horrible. Don't count on sliced bread either. They finally put sliced bread on the shelves, but it's been not only expired but moldy the last two times I checked. They get fresh pitta and flat bread every day. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Stacey S.

Yelp
I love this market! Every week or so I stock up on mediterranean salads, cheese, crackers, jams and fresh produce. The prices beat Ralphs on nearly everything. The exact same goat cheese that sells at Ralphs for $13/jar is only $8/jar here. Of course, they don't sell certain brand name items and a few things can be found cheaper at Trader Joe's, so this is one of 3 markets I visit on my grocery circuit, but it's a gem.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Wide variety and selection. Convenient location and always clean. Fresh halal meats are the best.
google avatar

Nunu H.

Yelp
This place use to be so awesome. After today, won't be returning. Rude old man with gray hair and colored eyes. We were in the produce department and he harassed us. Sorry we're not Armenian buddy, learn some manners and how to treat customers with respect. Shame on the owner/manager for hiring this idiot with poor skills. He shouldn't even be on the floor around people. They have other employees that don't make you feel comfortable while trying to shop, they stare you down and don't take their eyes off you. 2 stars for the friendly checkout lady working at register (short black hair) Other then that, they have good food down the street with better service.

Josh B.

Yelp
I don't recommend this place at all. The workers don't know how to speech English. The deli workers are very slow. They took 20 minutes to giveme something from the deli. I went home and it was the wrong product. I went and complained to the owner and the owner is very rude. He did not give me my money back. Please don't come to this place. Instead go to Pasadena Marketplace.
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
This store is clean and has all the Mediterranean culinary products you may need. Their English isn't very understandable, but they are helpful and friendly nonetheless. Bring bags, be careful parking, and be prepared to pay a little more than you think.

Deb H.

Yelp
What an amazing local treasure! A friend introduced me to this wonderful, family-run market. I found all sorts of specialty food in the shop, along with a fantastic roasting tin, delicious smoked salmon, and fantastic craft lettuces that added a bit of wow to my salad. The house made muhammara and hummus were out of this world, and the packaged dried fruits and nuts put the supermarket selection (not to mention prices...) to shame. Don't miss the breads in the back room. I got some multi-seeded flatbread crisps that are to die for. Worth a special trip, even if you aren't lucky enough to live in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Andriy I.

Yelp
Good local store. Found condensed milk, red caviar, smoked cheese and lots of tasty fruits. Good quality meat too.
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Called them on a Friday for a big catering order. Picked it up Saturday and it was delicious, swift, and perfect. Everything was delicious. We got the party package #1 and #2. Came with enough food to feed a party of 20 and more. We have leftovers that we will be enjoying today as well. When you think of catering, you just want the food to be good and they more than meet those needs. I definitely recommend this place! Thank you so much, guys!
google avatar

Isabel C.

Yelp
I heard so much about this market being cheap and fresh from Yelp and my friends. After my first visit, I was little disappointed. I got 3 lbs of ground beef Lula, 1 lbs of mortadella with garlic and pistachio, some fresh fruits. Well, they were all under $30 bucks - cheap for sure. But the Lula was extremely fatty and SALTY. Mortadella was too salty too. Something tells me that it has been sitting on the shelf for a long period of time. Fruits were good, only except those "special" priced raspberry they sold at the counter were mostly bad from the inside. I understand with local smaller markets, its often a "hit & miss." But I won't mind give another try... just not any time soon.
google avatar

Johnathan P.

Yelp
The people are great here but this place never opens on time. Sometime the manager will make me wait outside but I see other customers already shopping. Maybe because I'm not Armenian.
google avatar

Nare N.

Yelp
I use to love this place... But it got worse and worse Attention people! Always pay attention to your reside, day charge you more and when you showing them the reside, they saying it's an accident. Also day have molded products sometimes. And meet place I got several times spoiled fish and meat. But the workers are great! Do not planning to go there anymore.

Claudia G.

Yelp
Love going grocery shopping here. I love Mediterranean food but it can get pricey eating out. This is the next best thing. Friendly cashier and butchers. Nice market with all you need to diy dinner.
google avatar

Leanne P.

Yelp
I live nearby and I shop here whenever I'm in a hurry or I've been cooking the same things too often and need some inspiration. The produce department is small, but well-stocked and they beat the prices of the supermarket down the street. Cheese and yogurt selections are awesome, and they've got a freezer full of pastries and dumplings you can take home and cook. The best part for me, though, is their selection of European brands and snacks. Definitely worth the trip.

Edward D.

Yelp
Spotlessly clean, well stocked and super organized, with so many items I can't find anywhere else. Went in looking for persimmons and left with a whole bag of groceries. The deli is fantastic. Loved the fresh hummus and tabbouleh. I will be back!
google avatar

Sydney B.

Yelp
Just moved to the area and I love this market! They carry a great variety of specialty ingredients and health foods for a small neighborhood market. Fresh produce, and great prices on produce, spices, and bulk items. Their house-made hummus and muhammara are to die for.
