"The churn continues on St. Marks Place: Chinese skewer spot A-Roll Bar and Grill has closed after less than a year." - Melissa McCart

"The newest reason to brave the block is a month-old skewer shop called A-Roll Bar and Grill. The restaurant opened on the west end of the block last month, under some scaffolding and behind a set of stairs. Down a long hallway covered in neon signs, customers suck on crawfish heads and grilled chicken feet. A-Roll, a Chinese chain, has hundreds of casual locations overseas — and one in Flushing, Queens. None are like the sit-down skewer shop on St. Marks. It’s run by Kacey Yeh, a former bartender at Nobu. She runs a small bar at the back of the shop with a full menu of fiery, fried snacks. It’s a party waiting to happen." - Luke Fortney

Recently just find out this hidden gem in St Mark Pl. It is newly opened and this spot is a skewer central. They serve variety of Chinese skewers, perfectly cooked and seasoned with that magical Mala touch and a dash of cumin. It is absolutely delicious and addicted. We also tried the cold dish and hot dishes. The crayfish is amazing and A-must try. My favorite skewers are Lychee pork belly and pineapple beef. They are so yummy with a touch of fresh fruit. The decor is just as unique as their dishes 😁. It’s BYOB so you can pair your favorite drink with their sensational skewers. Good vibes and friendly service. Highly recommended and will be back soon.

This was my first visit and it definitely wont be my last. Location is very great easy commute to St mark area .The prices are inexpensive, they even have choices within 5-15$ price range it’s great for large groups, parties with friends, and lots of different varieties to order from. They serve delicious skewers and other Chinese style dishes but its little bit modern, I recommend pineapple and fried dough which was absolutely amazing, drinks are also awesome. They have a lot of promotions for costumes as well, highly recommended enjoying time here with friends

The atmosphere is such a fun vibe. The service is alright. They do their job and leave you alone but available when you need them. The food came out quickly and was decent. Most importantly, they were affordable prices so you can mix and match so many different options. This would be a cute and fun date night and friends hang out spot!

Google
Really a hidden gem! Went there for dinner with my friend. The place was a bit hidden downstairs in St. Marks. The interior is full of neon light deco, elements are super cute and funny haha. I recommend trying most of skewers, especially pineapple beef, crispy chicken bones and cilantro tofu. All super flavorful but not overly spiced. The mixed veggie salad is a good appetizer. Fried milk is so aromatic and is a must-try. Service is really nice as well. Totally recommend:)

Google
It is amazing that there is a Chinese BBQ skewer place in East Village now! It is very affordable and everything is super tasty. They also have a new Crispy Eggplant dish, which is unique! Our favorites are lychee pork belly skewer, fried milk, lamb skewer, beef skewer, and enoki mushroom skewer. We also tried soy sauce fried rice, calamari, and beer. The interior is well decorated with neon signs and posters. The service was fast and efficient as well. They also open until midnight everyday! Great experience!

Google

🍢Skewer Shop in NYC🍢 . 📍 A-roll Bar & Grill is a Chinese restaurant serving a wide variety of skewers, and hot and cold traditional dishes, that are also open till midnight every day! . 🍢Delicious skewers options like beef and lamb kebabs, chicken wings and feet, shrimps and abalone, pork belly and kidneys and so much more! . 💵 The price is super affordable and as a bonus, their cocktails are really good here as well!

Very cute spot in St Marks Square! Set up like Chinese Street Style with so many skewers and cute cocktails to choose from. Right now they also have a $10 for 100 bottles of beer (5 per visit) special. Everything came out fast and warm and we loved the whole neon lights and vibe inside. There is also okra and some veggie options for all our veg friends. Enjoy!

Yelp
This is such a cool spot to have on St. Mark's. I wish this was here when I was younger and actually went out late to drink. Sigh. Because I would have lived in this spot on Saturdays! Service is pretty fast and the restaurant is located in the basement of the building; the cool neon lights have you feeling like you're in an underground and secret spot for good eats. Lol. I did enjoy the viral skewers that everyone has been posting about! But what really impressed me more was their crawfish. Starting at $4.99/LB, you can get such good crawfish here. I really enjoyed their mala sauce which is Sichuan peppercorn and chili mixed in a paste. It was fire... it had a great kick in it and was smokey. It's different than the other spicy foods I usually eat. So it was a good change and I'll definitely be back for more. BTW - I did try their lychee coolada and as someone who is now a lightweight, I got a slight buzz from it. Plus it was yummy! Bonus points to the waiter working when I was there would made sure my almost 3 year old was comfortable and got everything she needed in a timely manner. He even gave her a yogurt drink to try. That was awesome. :)

Yelp
Late night skewers always hit the spot I was seated and served fairly quickly when I came to grab a snack after dinner. The skewers come out at different times depending on when they are done which helps to keep it sizzling and hot! The prices and quality are pretty good and it's super easy to share! What surprised me the most was their crawfish dish! They are currently promoting their $5 per pound of crawfish and I got the garlic sauce one - I was surprised by the large amount and their addicting sauce at such a cheap price! Totally worth getting especially if they still have that deal! East village is such a popular late night spot and I'm glad they have a skewer option now! The store is slightly tucked inside but look closely and you'll find this hidden gem!!

Ann S.

Yelp
This is a great late night, and cheap eats, spot in the East Village. They serve authentic Chinese dishes and street style skewers at very affordable prices, plus some unique cocktails! Not to mention a cozy, cute interior with neon signs! We Tried: *Skewers: Lamb, Shrimp, Pineapple Beef *Fried Instant Noodle *Szechuan Popcorn Chicken *Mountain Hopper cocktail We had a lot of fun and everything was delicious! Service was a bit slow but we didn't mind. The pineapple beef skewers were by far my favorite!

Jacky C.

Yelp
Who needs the skewer cart when you have Aroll? You can enjoy a wide variety of skewers while being able to sit down with friends in an air conditioned room for about the same price as what the carts charge. They also serve other items besides skewers like the Guobao Pork, Fried Instant Noodles, and some dessert options like Fried Milk. They also have a bar in the back, making this spot the perfect pre-game destination before you head out for the nightlife.

Robyn T.

Yelp
This place is PHENOMENAL!! Great spot to come get affordable and delicious tood !! Yummy bites no matter what you order especially with a nice cold beer ! They have a great deal going on for their beer too which is an even better reason to go check them out

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Aroll Bar & Grill is a small but authentic Chinese skewers place located on St Marks. The storefront looks unassuming, but the food inside is delicious! They're most well-known for their Chinese feet skewers, which may not be everyone's taste, and they have plenty of other options. I surprisingly enjoyed the pineapple beef. Aside from the skewers, they also serve appetizers and hot dishes like mala potato fries, which had great flavor, and the guobao pork, which was sweet and tangy. This is a relatively new location so they currently have mocktails and the passion weeke and lychee colada were definitely a great pairing with our food and skewers.

Cree P.

Yelp
If you like Chinese skewers and other classic dishes with a twist then I recommend this spot. Still makes extremely delicious dishes that are quite flavorful and innovative! I always love a restaurant that isn't afraid to experiment with ingredients. They do the same for their cocktails! Some skewers that my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed were their Lychee and Pork Belly, Beef and Pineapple, Scallion Pancake, and Chicken Wings! I also like how little the wait time was for our food. Our waitress was quite friendly too even though sometimes it was hard to wave her down. The place is still nice with the chill vibes, awesome decor and amazing food I would definitely visit again.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Very affordable late night spot in near East Village NYC. Space was very unique and the service was great. All their skewers' textures were unique.

Yelp
I love the food here. I would come just for the mixed vegetable salad. I'm not an expert- only had roommates from the Szechuan province who taught me how to eat, but this chili seasoning and flavor seems proper to me. Delicious. I've had the popcorn chicken twice and I like it but the second time seemed like they used too much batter. Servers are quite nice. I like the ambiance, it's clean, table lamps are cute, you can order with QR code- but since it isn't too crowded in here the music can get really loud. Although last time I asked the server to turn it down, because it was just two of us in the restaurant and I wanted to hear my conversation, and he kindly did.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Came on a Friday night with some friends for some skewers. Space is a bit tight - good for groups of 2-4. They have an extensive menu of skewers and small bites. Skewers are delivered in batches and kept warm over a little grill, warmed with candles. Overall tasty but the star of the show was the fried milk. The batter was super thin and milk was perfectly sweetened. Recommend eating it as soon as it comes out! A bit pricey compared to some other skewer spots but a good spot for when the cravings hit.

Amanda W.

Yelp
Chicken feet skewers! Thats all, its delicious. Glutinous and flavorful, soft nd not hard. And the spicy is just right. Their fried milk was good too, so was the pineapple beef skewers. My man love the lychee pork the most, it was a whole lychee wrapped by pork belly. The shrimp was covered in salt nd was too much for us. The bathroom is nice, clean but small. Hand soap made us feel fancy.

Yelp
The secret is out! I just found your new favorite skewer spot! Aroll Bar and Grill is serving up Chinese skewers, cocktails and beer in a casual environment. What I ordered: -lychee pork belly -shrimp -beef -lamb -chiba tofu -fish ball -squid -fried milk -fried eggplant My favorite skewer was the lamb, which was dusted with cumin. I also liked the shrimp, which had a crispy shell that ate whole! The fried eggplant is really unique too. They deep fry a whole eggplant and drizzle mayo and a spicy sauce on top. To finish it off, I had fried milk, which was crispy and custardy at the same time! They're currently doing a promo for a free draft beer with $100 in store purchase! This place is a nice spot to go for catching up with friends and drinking. It's a very casual, laid back environment and the skewers come out fast. I will say that it takes me a lot of skewers to feel full, so it can get pricy, especially if you're in a big group! Feel free to follow me on IG @angies_foodie_adventures

Yelp
this is a solid spot for skewers in east village. you order online by scanning a QR code. they have a variety ranging from meats to veggies and fruits. my favs were the tofu! some orders came with 1 or 2 skewers. the fries and noodles were goood and had good mala flavor. also liked the fried milk drizzled with condensed milk. however it can get salty. the interior has pretty neon lights which I loved and chill vibes! we ordered: *skewers [$2 - $13.98] *fried noodles $10.99 *mala potato fries $7.992 *fried milk $8.99 *wong lo kat $3.50 *coconut milk $3.50

Yelp
Definitely still a work in progress as it is a relatively new establishment focusing on skewers and other small eats. They do not have a liquor license yet so it's BYOB which adds to the fun of eating there. We went at 5:30 when the restaurant was still empty but it started to fill up around 6/6:30. Do try to go earlier as the skewers don't take as long to come out then! Once the place fills up it takes 30+ minutes for an order of skewers to come out which some people may be ok with but honestly we never received one of our orders of lamb skewers even though we were one of the first to order since opening. (-1 star for slow service) Though we saw they had no liquor license we were still excited to try their cocktails which unfortunately to our dismay they apparently did not have/did not have someone to make them yet they didn't cross it off their menu. (-1 star) On to the food. Below are our favorites that we felt were worth getting: - guo bao pork ($16) small portion but it was fried to perfection and had the perfect amount of sweet/sour sauce -pan fried cauliflower ($11) surprisingly good flavor, we ended up devouring the entire plate -Mala potato fries ($8) a small plate of crinkle cut fries doused in Mala oil/seasoning. You definitely feel the numbness and spice! -short rib(3 for $8) had good seasoning and flavor. Some pieces were a bit overcooked though, but still tasty! -lamb (3 for $8) also had good flavor, tender chunks of lamb but again some pieces were tough since they overcooked it. -chicken gizzard (3 for $6) these had the perfect crunch! - chicken wings (4 wings for $7) had this bbq like soy sauce glaze, was one of our favorite bites! - fried milk ($9) was the perfect end to the meal! Chewy and slightly sweet deep fried "milk" was so good we ordered two! Overall, they seem pretty short staffed and have a lot of kinks to work out. Price is not terrible, flavors are there, service needs some work as does wait time for food. Check out my foodsta @chiuventure for a closer look and more details of my dining experience here as well as other establishments in NYC and around the world!

Yelp
We came with a group of six and enjoyed some dishes, others not so much. Of the skewers, I surprisingly really liked the Lychee Pork Belly. I found that the skewers were pretty reasonably priced. However, the Mala Potato Fries were a really small portion for around $8 and wasn't very unique as it was just fries with a mala seasoning. We also got the Fried Noodles and Fried Rice dishes, both of which were pretty small portions for the price. I did like that they had a special promo where we were able to get a free pitcher of free for spending more than $100.

Erika T.

Yelp
Eclectic neon street decor meets flavorful Chinese skewers. This restaurant is also nestled in a pretty good street with lots of other places to get Asian food and desserts. Depending on how hungry you are, you could spend $20-50 per person. Each type of skewer on the menu usually comes in a pair, so bring a partner to share and try the maximum range of flavors. Their three special skewers are chicken feet, lychee wrapped in pork belly, and pineapple beef. I really liked the latter two. I also enjoyed the lamb and beef skewers. Their fried rice has a nice smoky flavor and is a good amount for $10. The mala fries are also pretty good--think crinkle cut fries in a spicy sauce. I would probably skip the scallion pancake (unless you're a fan of thick, doughy pancakes. I prefer crispy and thin ones). Overall, a pretty great place with flavorful food and decent service all around!

Sean K.

Yelp
Such a wide variety of skewers here!! Some of our top favorites were the pineapple beef, short rib, and lamb skewers. The lychee pork belly is... interesting to say the least LOL. They are currently waiting for a liquor license so they only have mocktails but said it's BYOB! Surprisingly, both desserts were honestly kinda fire with the milk mochi being our favorite. Its such a cute vibey place in st marks. Definitely be back!

Jess W.

Yelp
This place is young, the walls are filled with witty posters, and the menu has got the range of Adele's vocal chords. My typical experience across skewer spots involve the the meats and veggies end up tasting the same. At Aroll, expect to go on a culinary adventure: spicy, delightfully marinated chicken feet that make your tastebuds tingle, enoki mushrooms with a kick, and juicy, charred pineapple that complements the savory beef. And the sweet finale was the milk mochi. This is a MUST order if you are a mochi/chewy texture fan. The milk mochi was a delightful balance of chewy and soft. The crushed cookie crumbs added a wonderful crunch. I've never had a dessert like this, and would rate it a 10/10.

Angelina G.

Yelp
It was our first time trying Chinese skewers and loved the experience! We were able to see them making the skewers through the window. Our favorites were the Steak & Pineapple and Enoki Mushroom.

Patty B.

Yelp
I've always loved a quick and easy snack on the go, especially if it's affordable! This place was so delicious with its skewers and other options, aesthetically pleasing and service was up to par!

Pedro Z.

Yelp
Great service in general, the place is clean, and there are different areas to sit. The food is amazing. I would recommend ordering a variety of their skewers and a couple of big plates to share. The popcorn chicken is super tasty but it will numb your tongue. The fried noodles are a must! And the beef skewers, pineapple skewers, and shrimp skewers are some of our favorites.

Angela Z.

Yelp
Decor was super nice and provided great ambiance. Service was nice and quick. Favorite dishes were the cauliflower dish and their pineapple and beef skewer which was tender and flavorful. Fried milk dish was also super fluffy - couldve used more condensed milk but good way to end the meal.

Jessica W.

Yelp
I went here at dinner time 7pm on weekend. No one dines in the restaurant! This is a sign. It means this restaurant is not popular. But how they received high ratings online? They use the trick to give perks free snacks/drink in exchange for a customer's good review. The food is flavorless. Unlike a good BBQ flavorful, food here is really plain taste. The space is super tiny in a basement level. In the end, I feel deceived. Will not return or recommend.

Robert C. Y.

Yelp
Food was over an hour late and was cold and disgusting. Never again. Part of the fault was Dordash but ultimately it is the business that should correct the problems.

Tenaj K.

Yelp
This gem offers a seamless ordering experience; simply scan the QR code adorning your table and let the culinary journey begin! My palate was enraptured by the exquisite lamb skewers. Equally captivating were the cocktails, a tantalizing symphony of flavors. Amidst laughter and camaraderie, this spot provides the ideal backdrop for unforgettable moments with cherished friends, accompanied by an array of succulent skewers and libations. Truly, a culinary escapade not to be missed!

Katie B.

Yelp
Had a great meal here at A-roll tonight with some friends! Highlights included their signature chicken feet (don't knock it till you try it), skewers (beef, lamb and enoki) and mala fries. The fries had the most amazing, intense, mala flavor and sensation - highly recommend. They don't yet have their liquor license but do have 3 tasty mocktails on the menu and are BYOB in the mean time, as I understand it. Desserts include milk mochi and fried milk - the latter has a pillowy texture and subtle sweetness (didn't try the mochi). Overall A-Roll is a cool new spot in St. Marks with great food and friendly service. Can't wait to come back to try more of their skewers!

Lesley W.

Yelp
This is a relatively new establishment on St. Marks serving skewers. I loved what I ordered and everything was flavorful. If you are someone with no spice tolerance, this isn't really the spot for you as most items have a spicy seasoning and/or uses mala. It's a very narrow spot that utilizes every square inch for seating. As of December 2023, they are still trying to get their liquor license so in the mean time, get their mocktails! They were delicious The milk mochi is a must to finish out the meal!!! Service was incredible and since it was only two people on the floor, I understood if they weren't able to help me in the moment. But they would come to me right after they finish what they are doing! I would come back for a late night snack again!!

Mafer R.

Yelp
This was a great find in the neighborhood! I love a skewer and the shrimp were my personal favorite! The vibe was trendy and fun without making it intimidating or touristy and it's just a fun casual place. Everyone working here was incredibly nice and fun.

Trish H.

Yelp
The beef and pineapple was really yummy and juicy. The fried milk was also quite delicious and perfect to end the meal with. Decor was also really nice and moody.

Jasmine C.

Yelp
came on a weekday night, so it was calm and quiet. the staff was attentive and friendly, food came out in a timely manner. didn't try any of their cold or hot dishes yet because we were mainly craving skewers, but they did look good! highly recommend trying their pineapple beef and lychee pork belly, they did not disappoint & was my personal favorites. the scallion pancake was a little too dry to my liking, but nothing like adding a meat skewer between it can't solve. the chicken gizzard, chicken feet, & short ribs was also good. price for the skewers are decent. their dessert consist of fried milk and milk mochi which honestly just bring back childhood memories. my favorite is the milk mochi because of the horlick flakes and the mochi texture. it's BYOB at the moment but they do have a limited offer of mocktails & they're pretty good -- we got the passion week and osmanthus bee. hoping to see their skewer and mocktail menu expand and have more interesting twists!

Davide F.

Yelp
Great skewers, amazing service and wonderful food! Great for both drinks or a huge affordable dinner

Brandon T.

Yelp
newest addition to st marks! their skewers and hot dishes were all super tasty. we also like their milk mochi dessert. they do BYOB as well!!

Melissa C.

Yelp
visited Aroll for some quick bites and this is THE place to go to! we ordered a variety of hot dishes, skewers, drinks, and desserts and I can confirm that everything was delicious. this was my first time trying out a bar that serves Chinese style bar food and I loved the way they integrated spices and sauces to their foods! our server was also attentive as she came back to make sure we were okay. top notch service! :') it was also decorated so nicely! there were so many light up signs which literally screams that this spot is the perf spot to go to during a night out!

Jeff B.

Yelp
Really good eats here ordered and entree and 3 orders of skewers for me and my friend. It was BYOB and the service was really fast.

Cindy L.

Yelp
Both the food and service were wonderful! I've tried a couple of Chinese skewer places around NYC and never found the place that fully satisfied my cravings, until today! Seasoning on the skewers was great and fit my taste palette exactly!
