A Chile Road Trip on the I-25 from Las Cruces to Denver | Eater

"A roadside stop built around the green chile cheeseburger archetype: a loosely packed patty topped with fleshy, piquant Hatch chile and a relishy green sauce that delivers a lingering double-hit of heat, living up to its billboard’s boast." - Gustavo Arellano

Cute restaurant off the beaten path with really good food and kind staff. Clean, new bathrooms. Cash only but worth the trip.

Never been. Great service, greeted nicely when we walked in the door. Clean bathrooms. Nice and cool inside. Had homemade peach pie 👍, Chips and salsa, chicken fried steak, and pork chops - deep fried. Very good food! The only number was the two pork chops were thin.

I recently stopped by this restaurant while passing through town, and I’m so glad I did. The food was absolutely delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The service was just as impressive, friendly, attentive, and welcoming without being overbearing. It had that cozy, small-town charm that makes you feel right at home. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in the area. I’ll be back

I went here for a late breakfast. It was filled with locals from the surrounding areas, showing it is a popular eatery. Service was quick and pleasant. Breakfast menu had standard breakfast items. Looking around, stacks of fluffy pancakes seemed popular. I didn't have coffee, but the friend I was with said it was good. Decor was bright and cheerful. Because of the dining crowd it was a bit noisy, but you could still hold a conversation.

Very good spot, like a diamond in the rough. I ordered just a simple plain hamburger and it was very good. If they can get the basic stuff down then im sure the rest of the menu will be fantastic. Very homey and wonderful. I will recommend this place next time I’m in the area.

Very kind servers. The food was OK. We just got burgers. They reminded me of JTM burgers if you ever had them. Not bad, but nothing great. Glad its there. It is a nice pit stop.

The Arrey Cafe is my favorite place to go to when I am in the area, we’ve been coming here from years. The food is always great every time, nice and fresh with great flavor! The staff here is always very friendly and welcoming, and the complimentary cake tops it all off as a great dessert. We love this place and will continue to come for years to come. We live in El Paso and sometimes we even come all the way from El Paso just to get food then go back home, that’s how good it is!! We love it here, great as always! The owners are also constantly putting money into this place, always making it better each time we come. We definitely recommend the Arrey Cafe!

Some friends and I stopped there for lunch and we were all very pleased. I had a green chile cheese burger. It was delicious.

Yelp
We love this place for breakfast on the weekends. I especially like it, as the full menu is available all day - that means I don't have to eat eggs for breakfast :) Lots of New Mexican specialties (I'm a fan of the relleno and pinto beans), menudo on weekends and steaks on Friday night. It's out in the small town of Arrey, but worth the drive or a great pit stop if driving thru. Cash only (there is an atm next door at the market).

Yelp
It's one of the few places to get a bite near Percha Dam State Park and the hours vary by day of the week (and, perhaps, depending on the season). We were fortunate to find the Arrey Cafe open on a Friday evening and it was busy! We were immediately served chips and salsa. They were out of fried chicken so we opted for the green chile cheeseburgers (1/4 or 1/2 pound), which came with fries. Excellent burger! To quench our parched throats, we had enormous arnold palmers (1/2 iced tea, 1/2 lemonade). Several different fresh pies-by-the-slice were available for dessert (I had apple and it was delicious). The prices are reasonable and the wait staff was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Extremely clean and friendly, but everything tasted like it came out of the freezer premade and fried. We couldn't even finish our lunch. My husband ordered a burger and it was a premade patty (not even a good one ) and I got the steak fingers and they were tv dinner quality.

Yelp
Clean place, nice waitress: ordered the 1/2 pound green Chile cheeseburger: $11. Got a burger which resembled a Mc Double from the value meal only on a bigger bun, with green chiles on it. Overcooked almost burned skinny patties which looked like the standard 1/8 lb frozen type. Great fries though. My wife had the breakfast enchilada for $12, which she said was good. For a New Mexican cafe to put out such a piece of crap Green Chile cheeseburger is a shame as it's a standard at New Mexico cafes. Way overpriced for what I got, though my wife's plate looked great.

Yelp
Food Service Ambience It was a terrific all around experience. The service was very well done. The food was very tasty. The ambience was comfortable. The area is rural and quite pleasant. My compliments to the staff and ownership. It's been a mainstay for years. Thanks for being a must go destination in the greater southern portion of New Mexico.

Yelp
The most important is their great customer service! Their food is very delicious and tasty. The setting is very clean and comfortable. Staff is very friendly to all who eat at the cafe. Kudos to the Arrey Cafe!!

Yelp
I stopped by to get their Friday Steak dinner, and to my surprise, the steak was cooked to perfection. It was delicious. I had the sweet potatoe and it was delicious too. I will be back for another Friday.

Yelp
This tiny lil gem is right in the middle of a small town. The people greet you with huge smiles such a sweet feeling of home. I have been here a few times and the food has never let me down! If you are ever in town stop in and have a warm meal. You won't regret it.

Yelp
I guess I am partial to this cafe as my last name is ARREY, I am a grandson of the founder. I have family members that live here and I visit my sister and the family home alot. My name is Martin Arrey, eldest son of Guadalupe (Lupe) and Lela Arrey. Really love my roots!!!!

Yelp
First, the salsa is great. Ordered the chile relleno plate, and well, the rellenos were just "o.k." Not awful, but not great either, just mid...o.k. Rellenos are my favorite food in the universe, so those are always the first thing I try at a new restaurant. The main thing I didn't care for was that there was too much cheese, and or too strong of cheese. I'm not sure what cheese was used to stuff these, but it was some sort of Mexican white cheese. maybe a goat cheese or maybe asadero, Oaxaca, or Cotija? I've had so many different rellenos, most of them with white cheese, but never this.... I don't think (My favorite rellenos are made with cheddar). It was very strong and overwhelming. The other thing was that the relleno was covered in a glob of cheese and little to no green chile sauce... just chunks of green chile that seemed old, slimy and a day away from moldy. Still, it wasn't horrible (really, no green chile flavor at all). The beans were ok (no flavor). The fideo was ok (no flavor). Wasn't a lot of flavor here at all, besides the overwhelming cheese. Maybe I have covid, but I didn't taste anything but the chips and salsa... and cheese. The service was excellent, btw. So I guess my review is the exact opposite of the others here, lol.

Yelp
Salsa & Chips waiting for us at the table and all we had to do was squirt the salsa from the catsup type containers into a bowl. 4 Stars The 6 six of us ordered a variety of food from the menu: Chicken Fried Steak w/ Fries (two orders) 3 Stars Burger & Fries 3 Stars Combination Burrito 1 Star (nothing like the picture that caused her to order it. Bland unseasoned ground beef and beans.) Chile Relleno Plate 4 Stars Tamale Plate 4 Stars Fish n Chips 4 Stars They also gave us a free slice of german chocolate cake for dessert! 5 Stars. We all enjoyed our meals, except for the Burrito. Either get rid of the photo or make the burrito look like it and season a little better. Service was good. Old school building. I recommend.

Yelp
Friendly staff and tasty food. Much needed relaxing atmosphere for us on our long drive.

Yelp
This place I'd so good I've been going here ever since I was a toddler and the food has never failed. It also has great service and the waitresses are so nice. This place is definitely a must go to.

Yelp
The chile relleno at this little roadside joint is absolutely amazing -- a huge Hatch green chile stuffed with cheese and covered in delicious chile sauce. Puts other versions of this dish to shame. The green chile burger was not quite as good as others we had during a 2-week trip in New Mexico but still hit the spot.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed my huevos rancheros on our first visit. Cafe was very neat and clean. Stopped by for lunch the next day and the blueberry pie was outstanding.

Yelp
My son and were traveling and stopped at the Arrey Cafe three times in three days. We had the Friday night Ribeye special and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. I wish I had pictures of the Ribeye, it was huge! I could only finish half. I had the the Huevos Rancheros both mornings and my son had the Chicken Fried Steak one morning and the Breakfast Burrito the second morning. Everything was great! This the heart of chile country and they do it great. The service is great and everyone is friendly. The is a fantastic, small-town cafe. The prices are more than reasonable and the portions are a decent size. Be prepared, they do not accept debit or credit cards. They are only 3 miles from 25. We'll be back the next time we're are traveling 25.

Yelp
I'm a little biased as this is my extended families restaurant, but let me tell you this is my favorite place to eat when I come home. I almost always get the burgers because they're incredible, but you'd be hard pressed to find something on the menu that isn't good. I'd recommend the tacos because they're delicious. Also, if you come in on a Friday night there is a "steak night" where you can get an incredible steak and some incredible sides. Come early, though, because it'll be packed! It's a dinner special and everyone is there. Also on Sunday's they give free cake to anyone sitting at the table. The waitresses are always super nice and try to serve all the guest as best they can. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
My bro and family love to eat here, and I can see why. While the menu is pretty ordinary Mexican, the food is good, quantities are great and the staff and service are top-notch. It's also quite inexpensive. Not far off I-25 and doesn't look fancy, but if you get there after church lets out on Sunday, the place is jammed with locals, so I highly recommend a stop here for good, solid food and a fine, family atmosphere.

Yelp
Great local cafe for a good burrito and Agustin Fresca.. Generous portions and red and green Chile makes a perfect combination.
