12 Best Things to Do in L.A.'s Arts District: The Neighborhood Guide | Condé Nast Traveler

"As the Arts District neighborhood has rapidly gentrified, Art Share L.A. has emerged as a vibrant community hub for creative-types and arts enthusiasts alike, with residences, a gallery, ceramics studios, classrooms, and a theater. The 28,000-square-foot facility, which has exposed brick and beams, is all about inclusivity, so you'll often find up-and-comers beside vets. Themes changes regularly, and include topical subjects like "Female Gaze," a response to Laura Mulvey's feminist theory of the male gaze." - Krista Simmons

Very cool space! Saw a very awesome circuit bending show that featured really innovative sync'd audio and video and a beautiful sign-language poetry/dance element. Very receptive and engaged audience. The halls were filled with fresh and creative art pieces. Parking was a bit of a challenge but the surrounding area was safe and clean compared to how it was the last time I was in this section of DTLA. Highly recommended! We will definitely return often!

DIY creative hub—gallery, performance stage, cowork‑style tables. Attended a spoken‑word open‑mic one night. Staff welcomed first‑timers. Laid‑back and inclusive. Spot carries zines and sticker merch

I like this place as a local gallery. It's small though, and the selection is limited. But the pieces they do have are interesting and provocative in different ways. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're in the arts district

Love coming here and walking around, a great place to enjoy a meal and art!! On a nice day this place is just sublime. The book store has just about every cool coffee table art book you could ever want, and lots of other cute gifts.

New property management company are your typical corrupt, greedy landlords. They put on my record that I was evicted, even though I never was, and refuse to do anything to help me get it off of my record, making it so difficult to live anywhere else now. On top of raising the rent and ignoring 90% of emails, I see them lurk my LinkedIn profile… its just a weird company and it’s so sad what happened to this place. Eberly has no respect for the history and community that was ArtShare.

Wow! What a venue. Saw a great, nude art show and enjoyed classical music! A lovely experience.

Enjoyed Father's Day at the Los Angeles Arts District with my lovely daughter and wife! I totally loved the beautiful explosion of colors and creativity at the Art Share Los Angeles and the Arts District. Quite surreal! Check out some of the awesome work of local artists... it's quite extraordinary!!

This is a really neat venue to see art, hear some poetry, listen to music, and meet some fascinating people.

Yelp
A very cool art gallery with a lot of interesting art. The staff here are very friendly, and this place has an amazing history to it. All art is valued differently, so you have to be the one to justify what you are willing to spend.

Yelp
Cool place to visit with artists in residence and a bunch of classrooms. Highly recommended!

Yelp
This is an amazing place with beautiful art and kind artists. If you are an artist or just love art please check out the artists and art selection here. There are so many artists from different backgrounds that show their passion through their work. There's also a wide variety with different prices so there's something for everyone!

Yelp
Art Gallery showings for local artists and a stage for live poetry and performance art.. We walked around the maze of what surprisingly showcased talented work by various artists and mediums... Beth May performs on June 24th live; then Escamilla stepped up to the plate ... SLAM POETRY BABY!!! Food trucks and Live artists painting away on 4th street Arts District today Saturday June 24th till 8pm... We just walked here from Santee Alley starting on Olympic and Santee... I do not recommend this walk... better to Uber... Enjoy the artists!

Yelp
Art Share is a cool art gallery located in the heart of Arts District. I stumbled into it while I was looking for another gallery in the area. The art on display got my attention and lured me in. A great sign! Very nice space, airy, modern, appropriate for the art they have on display: contemporary, edgy, bold! Open daily 1 pm - 6 pm except Mondays and Tuesdays when it's closed! Nice X-mas decorations and chocolate candies for the visitors! What more do you want?

Yelp
I came here upon the invitation of a Yelp friend, Jenny T whose artworks are currently on exhibit until July 1st. The place is in the heart of Arts District in downtown Los Angeles. It has lots of free parking across the street which is unheard of in dtla. Usually, you have to shell out some dough to get a parking spot around here but free parking? Oh, yes! What a welcome treat! And what makes it even better? It's unlimited parking so you can explore the different areas of the Arts District without worrying about our friendly parking officer. At the entrance, you'll be welcomed by a friendly staff asking your purpose of visit, whether to attend a class or attend an exhibition. He would then give you instructions where to go. The facility is unlike big museums. It's plain and simple but clean. I love how they painted bathroom doors. I am no arts expert myself. To tell you the truth, I have zero skills on this. I even used to dread this subject in school. No matter how I try, Arts doesn't like me. I can't even draw anything so I have high respects for people who can. That's why I always attend galleries, exhibitions, and museums. I don't even know the messages each painting is trying to convey to the audience. This is mostly true with abstract acts. I don't get it but I just love looking at these paintings. Im glad that Arts Share allows new artists to be able to show their artworks to the public. It enables both the artists and audience to grow artfully and culturally. I enjoyed looking at Jenny's works, as well as the other artists holding exhibition simultaneously. I took pictures of my favorites for keepsake. After seeing this exhibit, I now have much higher respects towards artists and their artworks.

Yelp
Hi, Simplicity at its best. If you're partial to art or pursuing after others creativity, this is a place to stop by. It's free, basic and perfect. Like anything else some of the art pieces showcased were not to my interest, but nonetheless it's still pretty cool to get a small glimpse at the creativity of strangers. Make a stop as you stroll through the city. They have event nights if you're interested in their poetry nights or other things that fall under the performing arts. Like anything involving LA pay for parking or Uber. DTLA Art District things. Get with it. XOXO B

Yelp
Give Art Share some love. I've been here various times for theater performances, community events, and just to stroll through the gallery. But recently I hosted an event here, and that's when I was most impressed. I organize a lot of events in a lot of places around the city, and I run into so many problems with broken equipment, un-helpful staff, disconnected management, and incoherent communication. But at Art Share, everything was fantastic. The space was wonderful, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, pricing was reasonable, we had everything we needed as promised. Not only that, but we were able to offer free evening parking to our guests (!!!) and local art to peruse on the way in/out. This place has been serving the community and helping artists for a long time, and I hope they stick around forever -- the Arts District wouldn't be the same without them!

Yelp
Amazing simple gallery with theater performances. Wine and beer given, tip well. New age, modern art pieces. Located in DTLA Arts District below Little Tokyo. Spacious. Free admission. Staff are friendly. Art pieces ranging from $300-$3k. Theater area has schedule performances from media video to acoustic. We came on a Saturday night, missed the show because we came late. It was perfect because we had the whole walk to ourselves.

Yelp
The free parking is great! Not the best art. They let people submit their own works. It's very amateur.... The part that gives this place a star is an employee. He's an older gentleman with blue hair and glasses. He gives me the creeps. He is very observant of others in a non healthy way.
google avatar

Eneka C.

Yelp
Cute space, which features one main room and a smaller gallery. The gentleman at the front desk was friendly and answered all my questions. I came to see my friend's exhibit, who's art was displayed among several other local artists. The main gallery held the Satan's Spa Day exhibit, which isn't half as scary as it sounds, with its bold colors and catoon-like features.

Yelp
Such a fun venue, beautiful art displayed throughout, and a great theatre. I went for The Best Poetry Hour and it was amazing. If you get a chance to go don't pass it up. I can't wait to check out other events at this location.

Yelp
I come here often, and every time I gain something. They have frequent poetry events, which originally attracted me. From resident poets to touring poets, they always pack a stellar lineup of talent. A major plus is that they have wine for very cheap for the shows. I usually arrive early and peruse the gallery before they open doors to the performance space. Super welcoming. Incredibly powerful and intriguing pieces. There is free parking across the street. This isn't necessarily a negative, but just be careful in the neighborhood. If you walk north towards Little Tokyo, you will find very affluent apartments and restaurants/bars. Walk south and you will find yourself in Skid Row/wholesale district. Just be safe. **I recommend catching Alyesha Wise performing her spoken word, because it is more than worth the usual $5 admission fee**

Yelp
This is a HUGE SPACE and when I finally found it on Saturday night, it seemed even larger than I remember. I had, specifically, gone to see the work of TEALE HATHWAY whom I admire : i have no idea whether I looked at her things or not, because I could only identify the photography of DIANE COCKERILL whose work I found very interesting (MEMORIES OF L.A: VIPER ROOM ETC). ANyhow the space is in the Arts District, it's one of THE spaces and it does have an interesting collection. BUT GO at the START of the evening, not after yo've visited......

Yelp
Great space/venue supporting local emerging artists. A wonderful addition to the DTLA community!

Yelp
I visited this location for a meeting I was attending and all I can say is I am so incredibly glad that there are still spaces like this and Los Angeles. This building is completely dedicated to giving artists a place to do art and helping the community to grow culturally with this very unique art experience. Every artist and every angeleno should support this location and what they're doing to keep our allies in Los Angeles! An amazing location to hold events and check out their website because they have really cool poetry readings and art gallery exhibits going on all year all the time.

Yelp
What an amazing and supportive art space for the community! An LA gem. They offer classes in figure drawing and other art forms. They have a wonderful gallery showcasing interesting and innovative art. They have a large theater space, and rehearsal rooms, free parking and fantastic staff. You can request to rent their rehearsal spaces and rooms. This is a lovely space filled with creative energy and good people. I highly recommend everyone become familiarized with this magical creative LA Art space.

Yelp
This is an awesome non profit which supports the arts with its building, and struggling artists with cheap rent and work space. It's a great place with lots of parking across the street and the heart of the community in its structure. Inside you will find a welcoming atmosphere and usually lot's to see and lot's going on. It's not exactly "open" to the public and doors are kept locked unless you have business at the building. I was here for a meeting of sorts and was let in by a nice young man who made no big deal of it. Just welcomed me as if it were his home and led me to my room where I waited unattended and without hassle. It's that kind of place. I saw other things as I walked around a bit. People taking yoga class, some dance going on, and a lounge area with people lounging. Being I was a guest visitor here I did not get too intimate with the surroundings, but I liked what I saw and based on other things I have read of the place, it's easy parking and location, and my easygoing welcome and access, I cannot help but say this is one cozy artist building worth checking out if you're inclined to....art. Or the appreciation of. A real community space and project, it's the sort of set up that makes the city seem so much better for knowing places like this exist for the community at large, and anyone who would like to take part in the arts, and things related.

Yelp
The most magical place in the world. It sucks you in, wraps you in its arms and you won't be able to let go. This place has a theater, gallery, ceramics studio, classrooms and 30 artist in residence lofts. It supports local artists who are looking to grow in their focus and plays host to any artistic expression you could imagine. Swing by, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Such a neat little place! Love that it still has a very raw feel to it! Art Share caters to artist and also rents the space out for cool events. There are dance classes, a dope weekly paint and wine event and gallery openings often! A nice touch in the heart of the downtown arts district if you're looking for something unique and fun to do!

Yelp
As a visual artist I've shown here ounce and have live painted here a couple of times. This place is THE BEST!! There is always something creative happening here in their galleries, stage or classrooms. This place does it all for LA artists and shows amazing work rotating all the time. Check it out and be blown away!

Yelp
A friendly, cool gallery. The show my wife and I saw, Satan's Disco, was filled with some great pieces, my favorites being the one's by Babi Davidson. We will definitely be stopping by regularly to check out a great scene.

Yelp
An eccentric cool art place that features different art for sale, I think weekly. They used to have dance lessons, but there wasn't enough of a turn out :( so they no longer have them. There's an impromptu singing class that's going to be hosted there once a month now which I might just go back to participate in instead of just watching. All around a relaxed & cool place to chill at.

Yelp
This is a great place to come and look at different art work also a nonprofit organization which is always great, and is a great place to buy nice paintings

Yelp
This place is amazing. Its a really cool art gallery where beginning artist can have a chance to expose their work to the public. I love all the creativity involved within each piece of art and the meaning behind it. Definitely a really amazing experience. The only down side is the location and the parking.

Yelp
Finally stopped by Art Share LA after reading about it in magazines and art blogs online. I first heard about this open space when the building exterior was repainted by INSA (UK street artist) years ago. His painting is still covering the walls and if you drive by the building and are familiar with his style it's hard to miss. Inside the building are multiple rooms for artists to rent space, a theatre, and exhibit halls. It was interesting walking through and speaking with some of the artists. Randomly walked into a room with two artists, one working on the computer and other drawing, and was told the room was actually space for six different artists. Not only was I checking out the building but dropped in to view a special exhibition by Chocolate (skateboarding company) celebrating their 20th anniversary. On display featured the works of Evan Hecox, archival photos, original sketches, board graphics, and other special pieces. I think this a great place for an up and coming artist in need of space to create. Not sure how reasonable the rental price is but the building and area around itself should serve as some inspiration.

Yelp
Pretty nice venue. I came here for a Button Poetry event and was surprised how the set-up was. We were in a nice dim lighted room with a stage for performers. Room was surprisingly big, but with no chairs. Eventually our butts started to hurt sitting on the ground. Regardless, it was a nice art scene environment. They walso have art display rooms and a DJ at the entry. Def open to coming back for future spoken word events.

Yelp
Awesome spot! My younger sister put on one of her plays here. Amazing art work, very friendly staff, and I loved the stage where she held her play. It set the perfect mood! There is just so much to look at! I had a blast when I came here, and would love to come again! Highly recommend!

Yelp
This place is so cool. It attracts very interesting people and groups and I've showed up here twice for events whose locations I wasn't paying attention to until I got there. Love the gallery in front and the urban, warehouse-reminiscent performance space within. I've seen a performance arts show and attended a gypsy night market/gothic fashion show back there; it's a perfect little venue. Both times I've been here have been at night, but I'd like to see what's possible in this space during the day!

Yelp
I was privileged to experience Art Share LA last Saturday while attending an annual event hosted in its spacious yet intimate theater room. The building has an awesome feel to it, the patrons and artists contribute to the positive energy of the place, and the staff are friendly and down to earth. The artwork that decorates the exterior of the building as well as the surrounding area is a must see for anyone visiting, or living in LA county and in need of inspiration.

Yelp
I went for my first time yesterday to join a dance class on Tuesday. When I got there I was having a hard time figuring out where the entrace was and seeing the building address. I think there needs to be signs on 4th explaining where the main entrance is and address numbers clearly painted/marked on building. When I finally figured out that the main entrance was not on 4th street but around the corner on the little street I get to the front but its locked. I guess they keep the main entrance locked until you call then someone comes and opens the door. This is a non profit so they dont have a person at the front. The outside is painted black with colorful designs all over the building...pretty cool. When I walked inside...I was seriously amazed! I thought it would be some run down sketchy warehouse but its not! The place inside has a bunch of rooms where different lectures, art classes, capoeira and dance classes take place. There is nice art all over the walls. The dance room has wooded floors, sofas, chairs, and mirrors. There is plenty of parking on the streets. I really like what this organization is doing for the community. Kara is teaching dance classes on Tuesday nights. Every week is something different. Sometimes hip-hop, jazz, salsa, krump etc.. She's an awesome dancer and the class is really fun. She asks for atleast $2.00 donation for 1.5 hour of dance class. Well worth it! They also have poetry reading, paint showing and live music events sometimes. I really like the place and recommend ;)
