The Eccentric Inns of England

"For a sequel to the funky, bohemian Artist Residence Brighton, the natural choice is the colorful town of Penzance, on England’s South West coast. Artist Residence Cornwall is tucked away in the heart of town, in a beautiful Georgian house, within walking distance of just about everything in town. Each of the artist-designed rooms is completely different in style." - Mark Fedeli

"Vibrant rooms at the 17th-century Artist Residence are each uniquely designed and decorated by local and British artists. Guests have free WiFi. The bespoke style of each bright and airy bedroom is complemented by amenities including a flat-screen satellite TV, a private bathroom and tea/coffee-making facilities. The rooms may be accessed by stairs only. The property's award-winning breakfast is served from an à la carte menu in the restaurant area, which is also open during the day for hot and cold drinks, snacks and has facilities for business meetings. The Cornish Barn restaurant uses local Cornish ingredients to create a small plate menu in a lively atmosphere in the evenings. In the summer, guests are invited to relax in the property's festival garden, which serves cocktails and food straight from its BBQ smokehouse, and use the ping pong and Foosball tables available. Just a 5-minute walk from Penzance’s historic seafront, there are a number of restaurants and other galleries within a few hundred metres. Penzance Rail Station is next to the Wharfside Shopping Centre, just 0.5 miles away." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Artist Residence Cornwall, Penzance, Cornwall, southwest England - Explore & Book

"The London and Brighton branches may be cooking up a storm, but head towards Land's End and you'll find this funky Grade II-listed townhouse has plenty to shout about, too. Here in Penzance, appealing guest rooms are spread across the hotel and neighbouring buildings – each filled with flair. Sizes run from Snug through Luxe to an adjacent 3-bedroom Cottage; the whole a quirky warren of chic. Choose your favourite and stay in your own private masterpiece with all the comforts of top-notch bedding, Roberts radios and eco-chic toiletries. The fun doesn’t stop there. The ground floor boasts The Clubhouse, an informal rustic-meets-industrial restaurant serving up tasty Cornish fare. Grab a booth, order a beer, and relax over an evening feast. There's also a relaxed lounge-bar with cocktails, candles and a crackling wood-burner. Head out the back for the enclosed Festival Garden with trestle tables, a buzzy bar, table tennis and ping pong. Or walk out of the chunky front door and you’re moments from Penzance’s cafés, pubs and galleries. Highs Well-designed, imaginative rooms and suites; we particularly liked the Comfy Luxe, Super Comfy Luxe and Lookout options with their roll-top tubsA buzzing restaurant, delicious breakfasts packed with local produce, a fire-warmed lounge-bar, and a courtyard garden space for summer drinksThe affable young team can keep you up to speed on anything from the Cornish art scene to the nearest sandy beachA great base for exploring this gorgeous corner of Cornwall, and minutes from the Scilly Isles ferryFantastic value for money Lows Soundproofing could be better between rooms, and those at the front might experience some street noiseNo car park, though you can park for free on the streets nearbyWe haven't seen all the latest additions and refurbs in person but they look fabulous" - Clare Hargreaves

Artist Residence Cornwall is tucked away in the heart of town, in a beautiful Georgian house, within walking distance of just about everything in town. Having booked very late, I was able to grab a room for two nights, and Jane was so very welcoming, friendly and helpful in getting me checked in. She even let me into the room 4 hours ahead of check in. It was a really lovely touch as it’s so rare any place lets you do that, so huge kudos for that, a really great and not expected ask. ||The room was so lovely, very clean, comfortable and plenty of space. The bed was comfy and the en-suite was clean and packed full of lovely local toiletries, cannot fault anything in the room.||Shower for me was amazing. I didn’t use the roll top bath, but the shower was so perfect, and decorative. I’ve taken tips on how I want mine!||The location is perfect - short walk to town and short walk to seafront and coast.||The food for dinner was good and breakfast was THE BEST!, a great selection and really tasty. A decent menu with enough options for all and the setting is lovely too.||The only minor thing, was the service from evening staff, differed to morning and day team. Bar team of the evening were less attentive, vocal with each other and not guests, but still polite and nice. Just slightly frustrating when drinks forgotten, or left waiting for orders of food for dinner or extra drinks at the bar. ||That said, I loved my stay, and it was only the evenings I was there that I felt this. I loved it here. And I will be back. And for longer. And it really ticks every box!

Incredible stay first week of October. Check in was very easy. We had a small issue with our room on the first night and Jane was super attentive and apologetic and moved us immediately - the whole service end to end was fantastic. ||Really loved the decor across the hotel and the location is brilliant, especially if you want to get the ferry over to the Isles of Scilly. ||10/10 recommend and will be back 👍🏻

Artist Residence is one of those rare places that feels like a home away from home; it’s creative, cosy and quietly full of soul. It’s beautifully curated without ever feeling pretentious, with art and texture everywhere you look. The staff are genuinely welcoming and the whole space has that easy, lived in warmth that makes you want to linger over drinks and good conversation with friends.

Beautiful rooms with delightful décor and many small details pleasingly thought of such as slippers and dressing gowns and Roberts radios. We absolutely loved the rooms we booked, and will definitely come back to stay again. The location was brilliant, too, just where we wanted to be in one of Penzance's nicest streets.

We stayed one night on a business trip and found the hotel very comfortable. We were upgraded to a suite on arrival, which was appreciated. The room overlooked the street, but we were not disturbed by any noise.||Doors between the bedroom and sitting area, and bathroom and sitting area, were large and on runners. Looked good, but not very practical for privacy really. Lovely copper bathtub in the sitting room area, but we didn’t use it.||We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in the hotel restaurant, every course was great.||We would definitely stay here again when in Penzance.

Had a lovely stay down at the Artist Residence in Penzance. Great room, ideal location, good food and amazing staff. Special shout out to Chloe and Matt - two wonderful young people who are a credit to the hotel! Would recommend wholeheartedly.

Popped in for lunch, wanting to try somewhere different from the norm. Nice ambience, friendly welcoming staff. Service was a bit haphazard - the couple that arrived after us ordered, ate and left before we even got our food! However, it was well worth the wait - my husband said it's one of the best burgers he has ever had and the fries are pretty good too! Nice to have different options on the menu. Thumbs up.

Having stayed at the Penzance Artist Residence most years as a stopping point between the mainland and Scilly it seems to be going down hill. |My past two stays have not been to the expected standards to what they were. |Last year, I woke to no water in my room. Compensation of a coffee isn't really the way to deal with that problem when a guest isn't able to use the bathroom facilities during a stay. |This trip my room had no WiFi, I had to stand in the corridor or public areas to be able to try and use any. The heating wasn't on and window open, in late October not a welcoming introduction to your room. |This might just be a girl problem but a waterfall shower as the only option provide shower caps. When not travelling without hair products, so not wanting to wash your hair, this limits your washing options. |Staff were fine but not as well rounded as previous.
