18 Top NYC Bars for Throwing a Casual Party | Eater NY

"Arts and Crafts aims to be a much cooler living room. The craft refers not just to the 24 rotating tap beers, but also to the creativity the bar fosters with regular art exhibitions, lectures on numerous topics, and tastings. The East Village location’s short food menu includes pizza and hot dogs, while the Morningside Heights outpost has a wider selection of bar bites. There’s no charge for occupying one of the large tables, and the bars accept requests for private events." - Stefanie Tuder

Google
They seem to have a great beer and cider menu but we come here for the fully plant-based menu. They use amazing plant-based "meat" and the pub food is truly stellar. The burger is out of this world, the shawarma is phenomenal, and their soft pretzel is heavenly. The atmosphere is lovely, both inside and in the outdoor seating area. Highly recommend!

Google
Bit loudy and crowdy place, but worth to be visited. They have realy nice taplist, and hey, lot of beers in menu.

Google
Came for Sunday bar trivia as a group of friends in our late 20s (attended during the back to college weekend). Had really good cozy craft beer bar energy. Trivia/bar crowd was fun, not too rowdy. Craft beers had tons of variety, the sours were particularly delicious. Bar also had sangria and ciders as options (no hard alcohol). Prizes for trivia were first and also second place - $30 gift card to the bar and a flight of beers respectively. Overall, great time, great beer. Didn't get any food

Google
Place has a great vibe. Hidden Cellar with exposed brick. Great beer selection, food was served quickly, great to look at, and tasted awesome. Bartender/ waiter couldn't have been nicer. Chill crowd. I will be back.

Tony D'Antonio

Google
Lovely place. Friendly and knowledgeable bartenders. Nice variety of beers. Tasters were $5 each, so a 4-beer flight was $20. The Prairie Tiny Esses Sour was my favorite. The Rotbier (smoked rauchbier) was different/odd.

Jacob Sulka

Google
Could not recommend any higher. Indescribable quality, staff, and cleanliness. Will absolutely be coming back with my wife and children when I return to the area. Do NOT listen to anyone who gave this place a one star review. They don't know what they are talking about.

Google
A cool parlor near Columbia University to get a craft beer. Good beer and quick service. The only downfall was it smelled a bit damp and undesirable.

Google
Arts&Crafts Beer Parlor in Manhattan’s lovely Morningside Heights neighborhood is literally one of only a handful of best craft beer bars in all of New York City. If you enjoy really crafty craft beers or just want to explore what Amazing beer is out there, this place is definitely for you!! With that said, they still have wine, hard cider, light lagers, and pilsners for people who don’t want to explore. Further, their 100% plant-based menu is excellent. Arts&Crafts is definitely one of my all-time favorite craft beer bars in New York City.

Yelp
Arts and Crafts Beer Parlor in Morningside Heights is easily one of our favorite hangout spots for Beer Club in the neighborhood. Whether we are meeting friends for a casual day or just looking for a chill place to enjoy a great craft beer, this place always hits the mark. The beer selection is top-notch--they rotate a variety of craft brews on tap, with something for every taste. I've tried everything from bold IPAs to smooth porters and always find something new to enjoy. The staff is super friendly and genuinely knowledgeable about the beers, which is great when you're in the mood to try something different. One thing I really appreciate is that the food menu is plant-based and vegan-friendly! It's not always easy to find a bar that serves good food options for plant-based diets, but they've done a great job. The menu is creative, and everything I've tried has been delicious--it's perfect whether you're vegan or just looking to eat a bit lighter. The vibe inside is laid-back and cozy with cool local art on the walls, dim lighting, and a relaxed crowd. There's enough space to spread out, and it never feels too crowded or loud, which is a big plus. If you're into craft beer and want a welcoming spot with great food and chill atmosphere, definitely check out Arts and Crafts. It's a real gem in Morningside Heights!

Yelp
I'm not a drinker so cannot comment on their beer; although, my friend was happy with her sour. However, I was pleasantly surprised by their food selection. We sat at the bar and shared the shawarma tacos and pretzel - both delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Decent pub near Columbia! The beer was cold and fresh, the vibes were very casual, and service was fast.
google avatar

Paula R.

Yelp
Great beer menu. Lots of different brews are on tap and the menu rotates. The food isn't great. I would go here to grab a drink but not for a meal. If you want to avoid the crowd of Columbia students I recommend visiting them in the summer.

Yelp
Went here with a group. A pretty chill spot with lots of variety. Apparently they change the menu often. I wanted kombucha but they were all out of it on tap there was a wide variety of gluten free options if you like beer. My company really enjoyed the food especially the pizza. The bartender was super nice and presented other options that I could have since they had no kombucha . We will return if in area!
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
They have an ALL VEGAN MENU!!! This place only serves beer wine and cider no hard liquor. We came in and ordered the vegan nachos, wine, they had June Shine hard kombucha!!! We were very happy. Our bartender was great and explained all the different options that were available. It's a nice place to come if you're in the area.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Their entire food menu turned vegan??!! How awesome! Also love the draft kombucha. They usually have a rotating flavor from Aqua ViTea or Health Ade.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Beer only, and the novelty wears off fast. Sure they've got mead, the latest can selection from wherever and the occasional barley wine but the place is fundamentally a restriction on availability in a high traffic area. Can't give it more than 3 for that. The vibe is nice, cozy pub aesthetic, service is attentive and usually available. I'm probably never going back, solely because the latest can selection isn't what I'm looking for from a bar.

Yelp
Popped in mid day Wednesday. Some outdoor seating, good amount of seating indoor. Good variety of beers. Got a good recommendation from the staff. $22 for 2 beers. Price are not bad, pretty consistent with the city prices.

Yelp
Not sure how to start: 1. Just a college guys bar. Beer (nothing too refined), beer, beer, and some tacos, and burgers. 2. A dark interior, kind of imitating a pub 3. Unless you like loud kind of getting drunk people, this is not a place you'll enjoy. If you are a college bro, I guess this is the kind of places you end up coming to. .

Jessie L.

Yelp
I used to love this place. Until tonight. Staff was more interested in talking to each other than in taking my order. The nachos used to come with lots of vegan chicken. Not anymore. They serve you a big slop of stale tortilla chips with barely any chicken at all. In the past, we've stayed till closing and would be able to order more food. Tonight, when I went to order more food at 9:15P, kitchen was closed. No warning. Last couple of times I was here, they were out of buns and tortilla chips. Tonight, they were out of tater tots and customer service was also off the menu.

Yelp
Stopped by for a drink on a Friday night and every person who worked there was super kind, super down to earth. From the doorman, to the food runner, to the bartender. Really enjoyed their beer selection. The food is all vegan, but junk food is included (tots!) - and lots of tacos and flatbreads. If you go: The tents outside close at 10pm, no heating, pretty communal seating.

Yelp
Nice chill place to grab a beer and some bites. Since the bar is right across the street from Columbia University, most of the patrons are affiliated with the university in some manner. Arts and Crafts has a pretty large selection of beers (about 20 or so) that are frequently changed. The bartenders are pretty cool with letting customers sample the beers before settling on one.

Yelp
Arts&Crafts Beer Parlor Morningside Heights (Uptown) location as well as Arts&Crafts Greenwich Village (Downtown) location are literally two of only a handful of best craft beer bars in all of New York City. If you enjoy really crafty craft beers or just want to explore what Amazing beer is out there, this place is definitely for you!! With that said, they still have wine, and light lagers and pilsners for people who don't. Their menu is also pretty cool.

Yelp
Had a beer club meetup here and really enjoyed the space, the beer and the service. It's really a lovely space with a cozy, pub-like feel and I enjoy the arts and craft design theme. The ceiling is low but there are lots of windows and a couple of doors so you don't feel claustrophobic. I was there on a warm night but the windows and doors kept it from being stifling. It does get loud due to the low ceiling but never unbearable. The beer list is solid with a wide variety of styles and breweries. I had excellent service every time I ordered a beer. Even with a packed place, it never took too long to get a beer and all of the bartenders were friendly, informative and professional. Definitely will go back here, probably during the summer when Columbia is a little quieter.
google avatar

Yelp
I thought this bar was a chill little place, we brought my friend's puppy and sat outside and had a few beers/ciders, and it was nice! We also ordered the ACBP hot tots with truffle oil and Parmesan and loved them! The tater tots are shaped like Tetris pieces (either that or just random shapes) and while they were delicious on their own, the chipotle Mayo put them on a whole other level, I probably could have eaten 4 servings by myself!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
During my trip to NYC this became my "go to" place for a cold beer after a long hot day. The parlor is cool and comfortable. They have a wide selection of draft beers, ales and ciders. Everything is very fresh and service is friendly. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
Cool place. Great beers. Happy hour every day until 7pm and all day Sunday. Can also get half pours for half the price. Good deals. So many fun unique craft beers on tap to choose from. Some bar appetizers as well. Also well priced. They have the bar area, as well as tables. Worth a trip if you're a beer conesier.
google avatar

Tom F.

Yelp
Definitively a super chill place to come to after class, especially during typically off peak times. Definitely an above average beer selection, and there are plenty of spots to have to yourself with a group of friends if you're looking for something more low key. As a result of its proximity you'll see lots of grad students, but I see that as more of a plus than a negative. Definitely can't wait to try it on a weekend!

Yelp
A newly opened beer bar across the law school! Everytime I passed by this semi-underground bar it was packed, so I called my friend to try it out. This place was spacious with lots of tables and bar seats. Service was friendly and attentive. The $5 beer our server recommended tasted great. I think they have about 24 craft beer on tap. We also ordered some bar food, which were above the average. Meatball boat came out with two meatballs with marinara sauce and bread. Meatballs were fresh and juicy. Bread was toasted to the point. Sauce was good too. Smartdog veggie dog was a veggie hotdog with sauerkraut, hummus and ketchup. We chose pretzel bread which was wonderful. I would love to just get the soft pretzel again. There were not many good choices around Columbia but this place is great. I love the atmosphere here as well, neither too dark nor noisy, very relaxing.
google avatar

Pankaj K.

Yelp
Top notch beer parlor - with tons of beer of every style on tap to enjoy and changes every week too! Great service and bar snacks/food to enjoy too. Great service as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Had our wedding reception here because it was where we met two years before. Robert was great to work with in the planning stages, making a stressful process incredibly smooth. Robert and his staff were super accommodating during set-up, as well. As for the event itself, we had a fantastic time, and the guests have only had the best things to say about the food, (of course) the beer, and the service. If you want to pop in for a drink or two or have an event like ours, I'd recommend this place very highly.
google avatar

Rolo C.

Yelp
Relaxed beer bar right across the street from the Columbia University campus. Great place to kill time while waiting for a student to get out of class. Several beers on happy hour, out of 24 total on tap. Great craft beer selection. Friendly service from the attentive staff.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Love the new vegan menu. Had the vegan Korean tacos and "chef kiss". Vibe and beers are great. Love it here.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
I. Love. This. Bar. I went to school nearby and have been coming here for years with friends. Great rotating selection of beer on tap and bottled beers. My friend had some sort of berry cider here that she has not been able to find anywhere else. Flatbread here is excellent as well
google avatar

Miriah R.

Yelp
Great beer bar! No liquor, but knowledgeable staff and good brews! Haven't tried the food yet, but it looks delicious!
google avatar

Ed W.

Yelp
What a great place. My husband I and found it totally on accident. We were walking across Columbia's campus and exited out the east side and noticed the sign. We decided to pop in and we were so glad we did. They have a great beer selection! Our bartender, Omar, couldn't have been nicer. He had a great command of the different beers. We also really loved the artwork that was up. The day we went, it was a bunch of oil (I think) paintings of landscapes, cityscapes, and a really cool tugboat. This place is definitely worth a visit; even if you have to travel to get there.
google avatar

Aleece T.

Yelp
I like this spot a lot. The staff is incredibly friendly. They also allowed me to host a board game night for my girl's group and reserved a large area for us during happy hour one evening in June. I'm not even a craft beer drinker but I keep coming back for the nice space when I need a place for big groups and good customer service. It's right across from Columbia University too if you want to walk through and see the main campus. Would make for a lovely night out.

Yelp
More relaxed and spacious version of the popular WV location. The place was decently packed even on a monday night with some students and locals. The WV location always have a greaaaat list of drafts and this place was no exception. Other half green city on draft should probably be your go-to if stopping by in the next couple of weeks.

Yelp
Working in the Columbia area, I had first wandered into the bar during one of my lunch time walks. Took a quick mental note to come by sometime after work, unfortunately drinking while on the clock is generally frowned upon. When I finally got a closer look, I noticed that this place was not a typical college bar, with drunk fraternity bros shots and playing beer pong. Arts and Crafts, brings an air of much needed sophistication to the Morningside/South Harlem area. The wood lined walls and dimmed lighting gives patrons the feeling that they're in some sort of underground and secret bar. The art and decoration of the bar seems to mesh together really well, with stained glass accenting the wooden walls. The staff here always takes great care of you, being seated at the tables the bartenders frequently come around to ask if you need a fresh beer or would like some food. The beer selection here is quite impressive for a bar of it's size. With 24 beers constantly being rotated, I've seen bigger bars fail to pull of a smaller selection. Since I am particular to darker stouts and porters, I've had the Left Hand Wake Up Dead and the Green Flash Dia De Los Serranos, both recommended to me by the bartenders. The food here is excellent but leaves a bit to be desired. The stout braised pork belly pops are definitely one of the best items on the menu. The accompanying sauce is excellent and accents the slow braised pork belly amazingly. The mexican flatbread is also pretty good and a great accompaniment for a beer. The pretzel is fluffy and light and seems to be baked to order but the mustard is a bit strong for some tastes. The focus of Arts and Crafts is for beer and fills that role excellently. Although I would have liked a bit more finger foods to share, this bar is quickly becoming my go to spot for an after work brew. I look forward to their new selections. (they rotate too quickly T.T)

Yelp
I was here with my friends have some fun, we are all Columbia students here. And brought some beer here. One man outside seemed like the faculty here, tell me so rude and tough that I cannot bring the iron bottle outside can only bring the plastic. And so many people here bringing the iron only warn our Asian students. Being racist and tell us cannot smoke at the corner of the street. Told all of us not to come here, was forbidden here.

Yelp
This is the uptown branch of the original establishment on West 8th Street. Not easy to see from the street as it is basement level. SouthEast corner of 116th Street on Amsterdam. Open 7 days at Noon. Long bar, plenty of seats; lots of table seating. About 24 taps, mostly craft beers. Bartender was friendly, professional. Did not try the menu. Not busy at lunch midweek.

Max T.

Yelp
Greet beer selection, good food, and nice atmosphere. Was not crowded a week before start of fall semester
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, Arts and Crafts Beer Parlor - Morningside Heights was truly amazing. Excellent mood, and service is quick. These guys have a fantastic menu as well. Crew is extremely polite and can help you with anything. How could you not love Arts and Crafts Beer Parlor - Morningside Heights?
google avatar

Talea C.

Yelp
My absolute favorite bar. Great beer, cider, tea, coffee, and food. The bartenders are all extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Corey V.

Yelp
First, the bad: I'm not a big fan of the vibe in here. The place is on the basement level, so you have to walk down some stairs to get into it, and that gives the interior a dark, cavernous, somewhat exclusionary vibe that draws its slightly pretentious nature into sharper focus. Sure, any craft beer bar has some pretentiousness by definition, but this is definitely a place catering to serious sudsheads primarily; anyone who's a fan of craft beers but is looking for a somewhat casual environment to enjoy them might want to look elsewhere. That being said, I had one of the best beers I've ever had in my life here, and I'd definitely come back with the right crowd. You're not likely to find a better tap menu than this in the neighborhood!

Nicole K.

Yelp
We've been coming for a few years and have loved it. Great service, beer selection and vibe.

Yelp
Stars for each staff member this week that were, as always, rockstars! Smug-mug, Mr. No Eye Contact/handshakes, the owner, is the -1... tsk tsk. Someone has been a Naughty boy. Eh ..it's all good. He's typically an asshole to customers and employees, so I'm told. His reputation is in good order at least. And he only shows up to grab his, so this walking buzzkill... is rarely an actual buzzkill. This place is much better in summer because it's less crowded, but daytime is still fine. It will be better after Christmas probably when the kids go back home. Awesome beer selection! doesn't rotate much, but there's something for your taste buds, and again staff is awesome, and will guide you in what should hopefully be an overwhelming selection. Perfect pitstop near hospital and Columbia, right off the 1-Train. It's a hoppy oasis (when it's not crowded). And an important note, it's in a basement. For those with mobility impairment, you may consider Broadway's fine establishments. Diving into this dive, requires a dive of many steps. Both in, and out. I'll be back!
google avatar

Alexander A.

Yelp
Awesome place to bring friends for excellent craft beer. Tap list is really good, nice atmosphere, and a decently large space. They offer half pours to try different beers and the bartender was very fast. If you love craft beer you need to check it out.
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
Nice place to grab a beer with colleagues if you're in the area. They have a great selection of beer and the staff is nice and very helpful. Definitely check it out if you live in the area or if you are close by. It's a bit dingy since it's a basement type place, but other than that it's a great place. Will definitely be coming back for more.
google avatar

Yelp
I've always loved their location down on 8th St., and was beyond thrilled when I found out one was opening just a few blocks from my apartment. Columbia has been in desperate need of some more good bars, and Arts & Crafts is really here to fill a void. It's by far the best beer selection in the area, and such a wonderfully cozy setting. The downside, at least compared to the downtown location, is that this one is always packed. It makes sense, since NYU students have an abundance of great bars to go to, while Columbia students have been getting the short end of that stick for years. But still, I do find myself wishing that I could get in here without screaming undergrads sometimes. In that sense, weekends are weirdly better than weekdays here. And don't get me wrong, things don't get crazy here...it's still a chill bar, not some fratty student dive or anything. But you can expect it to be a little more crowded than is comfortable pretty frequently. Still, the beer selection makes up for it. 24 taps, all with really impressive craft options on them. The list is constantly rotating, although they have a few that seem pretty standard, including their 3-4 happy hour beers. That is one of my few disappointments with this place - the happy hour selection is not great. Only 4 different beers get that sweet $5 price, and at least the last few times, two of them have been helles. It really doesn't make sense to have two of the same style on HH. But that's just me. Anyway, overall I really enjoy this place and it's been an amazing addition to the neighborhood. It's a nice spot to catch up with a few friends, and has big enough tables that if you plan it right (and maybe make a reservation?), you can bring a bigger group here to enjoy the incredible beer and cute ambiance.
google avatar

Ren B.

Yelp
Went there last night and the beer was decent, but the bartender was incredibly rude and condescending. Won't be going back here.
google avatar

Marley B.

Yelp
Best bar in the Upper West Side, hands-down. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, diverse and unique beer list, cheap and quick foods, and awesome bartenders. Whoever gives bad Yelp reviews of this place is wrong. Y'all should go here!
google avatar

Michelle Q.

Yelp
This is such a nice bar to relax in. There are wooden tables, a fireplace, a bar, and interesting art which all make for a nice ambiance to come and chat. The bartenders are always really nice about recommending new beers and letting you sample anything you want. They usually have 3-4 beers on happy hour for $5 but I do wish there was more variety. The tater tots are really good, especially with the mustard they serve it with. I've also had the soft pretzel which tasted fresh and chewy. Also they have trivia on Sunday night at 7 pm which is really fun!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Situated across the street from the eastern gates of Columbia, Arts and Crafts is a classic college bar. They always have 20-ish beers/ciders on tap and they consistently rotate their selection. The bar is on the smaller side so it can be difficult to find a place to sit during busy hours but that's not a reason to not stop in. This is a casual, cozy place to grab a drink and a bite to eat. I highly recommend the warm pretzels with their cheese sauce. The bar is always well staffed you don't have to fight to get a drink!
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
Arts & Crafts opened several weeks ago just two blocks from our apartment. It took us a few weeks to stop in but when we did, we were not disappointed. I asked for a taste of a beer and was still undecided so the bartender asked what I normally liked and brought me a few samples. What great service and the bartenders here know what they're doing. Excellent selections though a bit heavy on the IPA/darker beer side and the pretzel was pretty great. I only wish they had more food but I love the laid back atmosphere and feeling like I'm walking into an old school tavern here so I don't mind too much.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots in Harlem for craft beer. They have a nice selection and offer happy hour pricing on select beers even on Saturday. Bartenders are very helpful as well.
google avatar

Sm M.

Yelp
I LOVE this bar. Their tots and beer cheese = super delicious. Excellent beer selection and happy hour, with solid wines for the non-beer drinkers among us. And they have solid seating - a couple of really big long tables that comfortably seat 8-9 people. You can also call ahead to reserve one of these, especially a little enclave, which would be fun for a low-key birthday. Thank you to management and Colin, in particular, for being so friendly and great! PS. I saw a baby and therapy dog in here which was nice!
google avatar

Monica T.

Yelp
Came here for a sorority reunion event. Staff was friendly in my interactions but I didn't really get anything as I had no $ and was not on a date. The event was fun and I'm glad the owner let my sorority sister have the event here. It's a smallish venue that had a good area in the back for our event. Not too loud and the menu looked interesting. Heard no complaints from the people I was hanging out with. If I were in the area, I'd come in.
