Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northern Michigan for Viewing Fall Leaves - Eater Detroit

"With its vintage neon sign and college pennants from around the country, this decades-old watering hole on the corner of M-22 and Lake Street is a Glen Arbor institution. Tuck into a booth and order the fried smelt, the burger with tots, or, if it’s a Wednesday, a bowl of chicken jalapeno soup and a pint of suds. Just don’t forget to bring a little green. Art’s is cash-only." - Stacey Brugeman

Delicious burger, my wife had the olive and I really liked the blue cheese with bacon. Generous basket of onion rings. I really enjoyed the Cadillac margarita and she had a diet Vernors. The pool table actually can be lowered into the floor to create more space. This is a very fun place, with great bar food and servers were hustling. Bring cash they don’t accept cards.

Google
The service and decor is great! However, I have to hold at four stars because they are cash only, and my burger seemed a bit small for the price.

Google
Typical tavern's foods here. The fried smelts were very good. The Reuben sandwich was decent. A good stop on our visit to Glen Arbor. BTW, this is a cash only business.

Me and my fiancé came here twice on our 3 nights and 4 days that we were here and EVERY-TIME we came it was GREAT ! Food came out fast and super good and the employees are AMAZING !! Super nice to everyone they don’t get enough credit for what they have to go through during the busy times here thank you again for such a great time 🩷

Google
Great service and delicious food. I had chicken jalapeño soup special, and my kids had burgers and fries( they make their ground beef fresh daily) and cherry cream soda.I recommend all of those!

We had great food and wonderful service. First time visiting there and definitely would go back. We sat outside on the patio and it was very nice. Maybe adding music would be fun. Prices were reasonable and restaurant was clean

Google
The cash only is annoying. What really got me was the fact they balance the food on the plate without gloves. They use their sweaty hands to make sure its on the plate. Bugs flying in the restaurant.

TLDR: when something is exactly what/how I expect it to be, it gets 5 stars! This was an eclectic little pub with a decently sized menu with pub/diner style food. I ordered an ARTS FAMOUS BLOODY MARY (MI) to start, which was a super great idea because it included Northern Latitudes Distillery horseradish vodka and Arts house made Bloody mix. Because I’m picky, I asked for no meat, no olives, and an extra pickle. It was perfect 👌. We also ordered a SKINNY MULE (MI) which ALSO featured something from Northern Latitudes- a ginger liqueur, and Valentine white blossom vodka. It was tasty enough where you almost didn’t notice the lack of ginger beer (because skinny 🧐). We ordered the JALAPENO POPPERS and FETA & GARLIC DIP as our starters- both were really good and we scarfed them all down pretty quickly. Service was decently fast and we were able to order our meals without delay. We ordered: BACON CHEESEBURGER with TATER TOTS CHEESEBURGER GRILLED WHITEFISH SANDWICH- cornmeal dusted filet on a brioche bun with tartar on the side. CHILI CHEESE DOG- topped with Art's chili with ONION RINGS Everyone enjoyed their meals. Since it was our friend’s birthday, the staff had us do a shotski- it was my first one and definitely an experience…🤣 🥃🎿 Overall we had a great meal and if we’re in town ever again, we’ll probably be back!

Yelp
Had a good breakfast including their signature Bloody Mary. Staff was a hoot in a known surly way. It's a great setting with kitschy northern decor.
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
Arts came recommended by a friend who said to try their chicken jalapeno soup (I think?). It was too hot for soup, but I started with the Smoked Trout dip. This was very good- creamy but not heavy. My Bloody Mary wasn't great, the mix had a very dull flavor to it. My Reuben was pretty standard. Husband wasn't impressed with the olive burger, he said he didn't taste much olive. Service was not the best. Not terrible or rude, just rather slow and not friendly. I'd probably try it again if I was in the area, because it's clearly a beloved spot. Maybe just an off day for us!

Yelp
Locally owned and operated, Art's is a fun spot to meet with friends for drinks and pub food. The server was hilarious and super friendly. Tables are close together and the place can get packed. It's rightly popular! The decor has sports team pennants everywhere. We all got wings which are awesome: hot and crispy on teh outside and fluffy light on the inside. Great wings! Good beer selection with many local/Michigan beers. At the time we visited, cash or check only so you might want to ask if you're credit only. Definitely will stop by again when in the area. Very fun.

Yelp
Waitress and bartender were amazing and very nice! Thank you! Upon arrival, pool table was broken and we helped fix the issue and then "the owner" was upset we helped fix. Should the owner should maybe just fix his own things if he's going to advertise? Discuss.

Ava B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went in to see what they could offer and upon walking in i could immediately tell it was very dirty, after sitting down and being told we should try the burgers they are made fresh everyday, we ordered some and immediately could tase that they were frozen and dry. Mind you, you have to pay an extra 5$ for some nasty fries, with no flavor. This is the type of restaurant you'd see in an episode of kitchen nightmares. Never eating here again.

Yelp
One of the only spots open in town later in the evening, Art's Tavern was super fun, and also delicious! Despite being on a wait and busy Sunday evening when I arrived, Art's whitefish sandwich was fantastic for dinner. Just make sure you bring cash, as it's cash only! But if you're looking for a fun spot to grab a pint and some grub in Glen Arbor, it's lively and a solid spot.
google avatar

Sherry D.

Yelp
Sad, I've been going here at least once a year for the last 15 years. This time the man under the tent ( seating ppl) was beyond rude. Server was good! Food and drinks have gone downhill! The burgers were SO dry and the Bloody Mary was aw you

Yelp
Art's offers a wonderful meal at a good price. Such a cute place in a prime location. The staff here is wonderful. They sat us on the patio with our dog. Such a great dog friendly place. We had the white fish sandwich and cheese curds. The fish was amazing as were the cheese curds. Highly recommend Art's!
google avatar

Curt M.

Yelp
Cash or check only - which sucks. There is a ATM next door with $4.95 fee. Stopped for a late lunch (no drinks). The whitefish sandwich was good. Bleu burger and BLT were just ok. Tater tots and onion rings were solid, but unremarkable. The iced tea was very good. The food took forever to come out. Otherwise service was good. Art's would have been perfect if the food was quick and they took credit cards, but the location and folding chairs (inside) are not nice enough to sit around waiting for pretty typical bar food.

Yelp
It's definitely a dive bar. They only take cash or check. Very busy upon our arrival. The service was prompt and friendly. Drinks and Service deserve 5 stars. The food was a little too greasy for me. They seemed they had a lot of fried options. Would definitely return for drinks.
google avatar

Zachary W.

Yelp
The Lake Michigan was hands down one of my all time favorite breakfasts. The melted pancakes are phenomenal, even more so after adding blueberries for a small upcharge. Go ahead and splurge a bit, you deserve it! The Bloody Mary was also incredible. Friendly, down to earth service and great vibes. We can't wait to return on our next visit to the area!

Yelp
This place was busy on a Thursday summer evening. There was no patio seating available so we sat inside. It is dark in the middle of the room. Booths have lights above them, but we sat at a table and the lighting changed when patrons came and went bringing in daylight. We ordered a margarita and split the surf and turf. No sides come with it so we got some cole slaw, which was a tiny amount but tasty. The smelt was good and the burger was yummy. The burger was quite small. I think I ate my half in 3 bites. I was hoping for a bit bigger patty for $25 combo price. Fun atmosphere. I'm glad we tried it.

Yelp
Food is great. Great burger, reuben, and jalapeño poppers. Great beer selection. CASH ONLY

Yelp
A group of us were visiting Glen Arbor for work and came here for a meeting--we enjoyed the vibe and experience that we went back multiple times during the week. Special shout out to Joe and Amanda for the amazing service. Monday is burger Monday, we particularly enjoyed the special jalepeno burger and appreciated the availability of a veggie burger.
google avatar

Kelsey K.

Yelp
We were in town on vacation and I feel like this place deserves a shout out. First of all, they're the only restaurant in the area opened past 10pm. Most of the restaurants closed at 9 and a few at 10. Having time to watch a Lake Michigan sunset & then go eat was fantastic. We ate here twice because of their late hours. The staff was extremely kind, quick & knowledgeable. The burgers and curds were amazing. Drinks were STRONG. Fried smelt was fantastic & the onion rings were the best I've ever had (I don't like onion rings). This place is definitely a dive & a good one too. Only negative I can think of is that they are cash only. They have an atm outside that has a 5$ atm fee.

Cris T.

Yelp
Came here while visiting the spring bear dunes. The reviews were better than other places and since there wasn't a ton to choose from we chose arts tavern. Waited way too long for a grilled chicken sandwich (tots) and fried perch sandwich (fries). Grilled chicken was like 3 tenders but hubby said it was "alright". My perch sandwich was two smaller pieces and the edges and ends and too chewy and inedible. I couldn't even tear it apart with my hands. I had to eat it like a chicken wing and chew off as much meat as I could. Way too expensive of a sandwich ($16) plus $5 for fries. Find someplace else to go if you're visiting. OR maybe try sitting inside because the menu is a little different and it just might be a lot quicker. Ps. There only take cash!

Yelp
During our stay in town, my friends and I had the pleasure of visiting this establishment not once, but twice, and it quickly became our favorite spot. I had the opportunity to indulge in two delectable dishes: the Bacon Cheeseburger and the Grilled Whitefish Sandwich. The Bacon Cheeseburger was a timeless classic, with a perfectly grilled patty and irresistibly crispy yet succulent bacon. However, it was the Grilled Whitefish Sandwich that truly surprised and delighted me. Taking a chance on this dish paid off immensely, as the whitefish was expertly seasoned, resulting in a delightful flaky texture. In addition to the exceptional food, we couldn't resist trying the shotski. The service staff added an extra layer of enjoyment to our experience with their infectious humor and warm hospitality. They made us feel right at home, ensuring that our visit was filled with laughter and good memories. I wholeheartedly recommend making a stop at this establishment when you find yourself in town. It's an absolute must-visit for its outstanding cuisine, welcoming atmosphere, and attentive service.

Yelp
Stopped on our way to Sleeping Bear for lunch. Was not super busy, the staff were friendly and our food was excellent. I had their fried chicken sandwich and my partner had a burger that was perfectly cooked. We had north woods lemon lime soda that was SO good. The art and memorabilia inside is worth a trip in itself. It's cash or check only, so plan accordingly!
google avatar

Lily N.

Yelp
First things first - cash only! Make sure you bring cash! Unlike me who only brought $30 after not eating all day. The restaurant is extremely small, but has so much to offer! My boyfriend and I ordered 2 burgers, side of fries, and a homemade orange soda. Yes this equaled out to around $20 plus tip. Everyone on the menu was decently priced and delicious! Service was fast and attentive. Such a cute restaurant in a cute little town! 10/10 would recommend and come back!

Yelp
Stopped here after a round of golf. Good burger. Service from Kim and Amanda was on the spot. Cash only but the definitely give plenty of heads up.

Yelp
Visited Art's this past Tuesday night. Had just finished the brand new putt putt course and needed something to finish off a good day with friends. Never been before, had the cheeseburger with a side if tater tots. Let's put it this way, if you want a burger and a cold beer, with the ambiance of a old fashioned bar, this is the place to go, the burger hit the spot, the tater tots were good, and the beer was cold. I was told during the off season, a pool table may appear to arise out of the floor. Needless to say, we will be back!!! PS, cash only.... Locally owned forever, I am told it's on its third owner so its been an institution in the Glen Arbor community forever...
google avatar

Yelp
If you're on the hunt for a fantastic burger with an authentic local vibe, this is the place to be. We savored every bite of our burgers, fries, and tater tots. The flavors were spot-on, and the atmosphere made it even better. Don't miss out on this gem!

Laura A.

Yelp
Fun place. Really crispy fries. I got the Rachel. Got two meals out of it. Cash only so be ready
google avatar

Pat S.

Yelp
When eggs take 1 1/2 hrs to served I cannot recommend. Food when served very taste but wait was much too long when one is hungry. We should have walked out.
google avatar

Yul R.

Yelp
Delicious food (try the bleu burger or onion rings), nice decor and the service was very good and the server was very nice.

Eric A.

Yelp
The food is quite good, the service is also very good and helpful. For example the music was on pretty loud so we asked the waitress and she actually turned it down. For the record we got Mary, very nice waitress.

Andrew L.

Yelp
REALLY bad experience here. Came in at 10:30 for breakfast. Sat down and quickly ordered with my wife and 2 year old. After 20 minutes, server came by to say that they couldn't do egg whites since they were trying to get all the breakfast orders out by 11. Ok, that's fine. Ten more minutes go by, and I asked how much longer. Was told it should be coming up next. FIFTEEN more minutes go by and I asked again--she said the cook was about to put ours on next. At this point, we said forget it and left. I worked in restaurants for years; it wasn't even crowded...owner was out front just sitting around doing nothing. If your restaurant is a clustfuck and it takes you more than 45 minutes to get pancakes and sausage out, maybe you should consider finding something to do with your hands other than sit on them, huh bud?
google avatar

Charlie M.

Yelp
Not many places in the area but their food was delish!! Atmosphere is fun too. Be prepared cause that are cash only!

Scott S.

Yelp
A pretty good place to stop and grab a bite to eat. Decent menu and price. Food was ok (C)
google avatar

Marin C.

Yelp
Last time I was here was 2015. So, eight years ago. Time flies. Food, still yummy. Cheeseburger for dad, black bean burger, on a pretzel bun, plus tots (both of the later for a small upcharge). Service- A-ok. Ambiance- it's why you come to Art's! Pennants and licence plates and wood slat and brack walls. Top notch, top notch. I am gonna try to remember to come on a Wednesday, I hear good things about the chicken and jalapeno soup.

Martha S.

Yelp
Love this place and come here as many times as possible when visiting this area. Enjoyed the blonde burger and fried perch with tots on the side. Blonde burger was excellent! Hubby enjoyed the perch and tots. So much perch he could not finish it all! You could tell it isn't the truly busy season since the pool table was still up! Great service and beers are always good. Will be back!
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Really liked the service but it was an hour wait for very mediocre food. I liked the cherry limeade drink.

Mark T.

Yelp
This place is a joke.1 36" TV and your calling this a sports bar??? Main host hanging around outside and we tried grabbing a table and he came in and said he would seat us. What's with the rude people out here? You would never last in Chicago.

Stargazer A.

Yelp
We were greeted by a grizzly, unfriendly jack wagon before we could walk in the door. He was standing behind a sign that said cash or check only (photo of the sign is attached since their Yelp page incorrectly claims they take credit cards). When I asked my husband if he had enough cash (because who the h*ll writes checks anymore), the unfriendly jack wagon interjected and said there was an ATM around the corner. I asked if they were still serving breakfast (it was 11:09); he said no. (We apparently missed breakfast by 9 minutes.) I asked if there were any other places to get breakfast in town, and he claimed there were none around. I asked my husband if he still wanted to eat here (because I certainly didn't), he said he did, so we stayed. As we were walking in the door, the unfriendly jack wagon yelled at us, "you won't get breakfast!" because he apparently thought we were too stupid to understand him the first time he said it. Ironically, we were seated at a table near a "welcome" sign. The food was just OK. I had a turkey BLT that came with more bacon than I could honestly eat, a small side of onion rings, and coffee. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich and a coke. Our total before tip was $45.05. The nicest thing I can say is the server was attentive and cordial. We used to stay at the Homestead all the time and visit many of the local restaurants, including this one. I will never come back to this place because I think the least a business can do is be nice to you and that wasn't what happened, though the grizzly jerk did tell us to have a nice day as we were leaving. FYI, Bring Fido includes them as a dog friendly place, but their patio was closed for the season even though the weather has been really nice.
google avatar

Carolyn G.

Yelp
We wandered in here because nothing else was open the day we arrived in town expecting plain bar food and a beverage. We ordered wings, garden salads and a BLT to share. The food was fantastic! Honestly beat wings I've ever had! Fresh salad, BLT was really good sourdough bread and nice thick tasty bacon. Staff was very friendly and patrons were friendly too. Definitely will be back next time we're in town
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Probably my favorite of the lunch options in town, with an especially nice whitefish sandwich. The only two caveats are that they don't cash, and you shouldn't order the smoked-chicken and cherry salad, whose component parts had spent so long in the back of the fridge that they were hard to eat. But get yourself a burger, a gussied-up grilled cheese sandwich, or a fish sandwich, a beer or cider, and enjoy the summer weather. They also have an attached t-shirt/rock/tchotchke shop (also cash only) sure to lure your children like magpies to the junkyard.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Well established, long time restaurant in Glen Arbor. I had the turkey sandwich and my wife had a burger. The turkey sandwich fell flat and had very little appeal. The side of tater tots were excellent. My wife said that her burger was fairly average. This is a cash only restaurant.
google avatar

Rose A.

Yelp
For those who have earlier commented about good gluten free options, there much have been a change in the business as they informed us upon arrival that there are zero actual gluten free options except a plain salad, no meat. Related, I was not told there is a separate more limited menu for outdoor dining, even after we willingly waited an hour for a table based on the online evidence of gluten free options. By only mentioning it was an allergy, here on yelp there are reportedly accommodating with gf, I was informed by the waitress that they grill all of the meat on the same exact spot on the grill as the buns and there was no way they could give it a basic wipe. SO, celiacs beware that there is nothing you can eat in this restaurant except salad greens and don't even think about adding any meat to it. Thankfully she looked away while I ate the GF crackers in my purse for emergencies as everyone else ate their meals.
google avatar

CJ M.

Yelp
Chill spot with indoor or outdoor seating. The food is your typical bar menu with breakfast until 11am. The atmosphere is normal, but filled with a lot of tourists, like myself. The food is palatable and won't make you regret your choice. I wish the breakfast menu would expand a bit, but we can't have it all. The cost is on the higher end as this town caters to tourists, but it won't take everything from your wallet. Stop in and try it!
google avatar

Caroline B.

Yelp
Great bar food and awesome service. This establishment is mostly a burger and beer joint. Food was good, only a touch greasy which is to be expected at a bar. Juke box was great. We had 1/2 pound smelt to start, I ordered the turkey ruben and my fiancé ordered the blue burger. Only draw back not a lot of 'healthy options'. Would recommend this place to anyone in the area.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I surprised this place had such low reviews. It's like an institution in Glenn Arbor. This review is for our most recent trip on a Friday night when skiing at the Homestead. Arts is a local bar with above average food. It's not a fancy place but somewhere that welcoming and fun to visit. The ceiling is covered with different school pendants and the pool table at night comes out from the floor. This place is cash only as a FYI.

Sica J.

Yelp
I generally don't write reviews. Stopped for breakfast on the way out of town from our week in Glen Arbor. Art's Tavern....A warning for everyone, they are not equipped to handle breakfast crowds. We waited for nearly 1.5hrs to eat. Only take cash or check.

Lori G.

Yelp
Great breakfast! Sausage is made in house and tastes great. Our group had fun sampling the trio of jams on our toast and pancakes. We've passed by here for years and finally stopped in- I'm glad we did!

Dane S.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was 7 years old as my family has vacationed here at the Homestead Resort for all that time. Now that I have my own children it's reminiscently poetical to bring my family here as well. This has always been the "go-to" for a delicious breakfast and great bar grub in GA. Its expensive, but what isn't in Glen Arbor?! I will say the 3 star rating stems from It's been lacking in Customer Service and food quality the last few times in for us. Art's will always hold a significance for me. I have plenty of tee shirts and merchandise to demonstrate my loyalty to this establishment throughout the last 30 plus years. Heck, even my daughters and wife have multiple shirts and hoodies to wear with pride. Also, I have no problem with their no credit card policy and in many ways support this business decision. But for the love of all that is wholly and precious, can we please get some friendlier, less entitled, genuine folks to work here!! "Dave" who works the front outdoor tent and takes names on the tablet, why so grouchy? I get it, as I overheard you telling the grill cooks inside, when sharing with visiting patrons to "not go far" and then they disappear only to comeback and complain they were never notified, is completely frustrating!! But come on, man! Crack a smile now and again or just fake it. Everyone seems so put out to work there and the complaining I overheard from other waitstaff about fellow dining patrons while eating was unprofessional and just plain hateful. To owner: Tim Barr, please change some of these attitudes. I guess, that's all. Food can be "hit or miss" and even considering the Covid times, consistency in ones craft, especially in food services is key. No doubt you'll still have the amassing droves of folks into your restaurant ready to spend regardless... You are the best and only culinary game in town, in my humble opinion. But let's not take that standing for granted. I'll always come back. Until the day I'm no longer able you will get my families business. But it's important to take care of your guests to make them life time customers. I'm not asking for legendary but a little kinder, especially the first timers. I can't help to feel they are missing out on what Art's was like before embracing all the commercialism at the beheswhat made you AWESOME to start. The food and fun atmosphere. No reason it can't be both, you know?
google avatar

Chuck L.

Yelp
We had a great time here, the service was slow and the outside table was in the sun, the food was OK, but we really had fun. It was much more than the sum of its parts!! The beer was cold and the folks were great... this place has a sense of humor and it's cool Also the town is great, located on an incredible lake and bike trails abound.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
It's weird eating out with all the social distancing and safety measures but Art's did it well! My blue cheese burger was incredible, cooked to perfection and a zesty, flavorful taste with every bite! My wife got the bacon cheeseburger with pepper jack and loved it as well. We really enjoyed the small town vibe in this place that felt like it had been there for ever. I was so happy with my experience that I went next door to their retail store and bought a t-shirt. If you're road tripping up M-22, Art's is a must stop food destination for bar/comfort food! We'll be back!
google avatar

Anne W.

Yelp
Art's is a decent place for diner/sportsbar style food, esp. in late September when a lot of spots are closed. Inside is loud, dark and smells like burnt grease, so I REALLY missed the patio on the 2 different 75 degree days we visited over the course of our trip. The whitefish sandwich was delicious if a little small, the fries and tots were hot and crispy. Side garden salads had fresh produce, but I found the homemade ranch lacking flavor (my mom liked it). Locally made cherry pop so sweet it was undrinkable - definitely a kids drink only. Large selection of beers but we didn't try any of them. On our lunch visit we paid $50 for 2 sandwiches with sides and 1 glass of ice tea. If I had this meal in Chicago I would have said tasty but overpriced. This was one of the BETTER restaurants we visited in the Glen Arbor, though, so it still gets 4 stars!

Phill K.

Yelp
Great service. Server very friendly and attentive. Large portions. Whitefish not the quality of restaurants in Sault Ste. Marie in the you pee, but hit the spot. Value not great, but it is a tourist town afterall. Nice selection of brews.
