New Dearborn Health Store Sellis Raw, Organic Sidr Honey from Yemen | Eater Detroit

"Opened in April 2021, the elegant Asal Bee is a bustling Dearborn storefront selling Yemen’s prized sidr honey—often compared to New Zealand manuka and informally called “Middle Eastern manuka”—that Muaath Alghazli imports directly from family farmers back home. The sidr, gathered from the tiny flowers of the sidr tree, produces thick, pale-colored honey with a fiery, almost bitter aftertaste that Yemenis use for nutritional and medicinal purposes, and demand for it surged during the pandemic. Designed to resemble a honeycomb with a black-and-yellow retail space, Asal Bee offers about half a dozen varieties ranging from bright yellow to deep brown that customers sample by spoon, mix into water or tea, or stir into vegetables; notable offerings include Do’an Valley honey (about $50 a jar) and Jabali collected at high altitudes (about $250 a jar). Alghazli also sells almonds, chocolates, raisins and male garlic, plus coffees, medicines and perfumes that depend on honey, and he navigates import challenges caused by Yemen’s civil war and circuitous air routes through Oman, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE. While business is brisk, he emphasizes providing a community service—treating customers like family—and Asal Bee is open daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m." - Monica Williams

The coffee and tea were served so hot. It took over a half hour to cool down. It burned both of our tongues and you could barely taste the flavor because the heat was so much when it finally cooled down and you could taste the drinks they were just average. The food was OK, but there weren’t very many choices. The atmosphere is really nice. The surface was so so where this place stands out as their honey and their honey is very good.

I came here specifically for real Yemeni honey and I’m glad I did. Salman helped me and he really took his time breaking down the differences between each type of honey — where they come from, how they’re harvested, and what they help with. You don’t get that kind of honesty and knowledge just anywhere. It made me feel confident in what I was buying, and I can honestly say the Sidr honey I got has already made me feel better. They also have a cozy café section inside. I tried one of their teas and a smoothie — both were fresh and tasted great. The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming, not rushed or commercial. It feels like a spot you can sit, take your time, and enjoy the moment. For anyone who’s tired of the fake “Yemeni honey” that’s sold everywhere, this is the real deal. Genuine product, respectful service, and someone like Salman who actually knows what he’s talking about. I highly recommend stopping here.

This place is incredibly unique and informative! The knowledgeable staff provided me with a comprehensive background on the various types of honey, their uses, and their sourcing regions. The owner genuinely cares about his customers and is committed to providing assistance. This holistic option and informative store make it a great place to visit. The honey prices range from $20 for local honey to $130 for imported honey. While it may be a bit pricey, the quality is undeniable. You can taste the difference, and they offer samples so you can test the honey before making a purchase. The ice cream was delicious; the honey added a rich, sweet flavor that complemented the ice cream perfectly. I personally added a shot of espresso since I prefer less sweet ice cream, and it was an ideal combination. Keep in mind the ice only has honey added, no sugar! The store’s ambiance is relaxed and authentic, while the presentation is thoughtfully curated.

I was in here tonight and the atmosphere in this place is very calming, welcoming and nice. The employee that helped me out was Ali and he was very friendly. Also, he explained all the benefits of all the different types of honey and help me choose the best one for my needs. I ended up choosing the Royal mix. I had a very positive experience and will definitely be back again.

Asal Bee is such a beautiful spot—bright, welcoming, and full of good vibes. The honey is the star here, and I can’t get enough. It’s all-natural, and the variety is incredible—I found myself wanting to try every single kind. Pair it with their awesome coffee and sweets, and you’ve got the perfect little escape. It’s the kind of place you could easily spend time in—whether you’re sipping, snacking, or just soaking in the atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Dearborn.

The drinks are sooo LOVELY 💛🐝 we got the Araysi, which is a fruity smoothie made with Vimto, and we got a Mofawar coffee. So YUMMY 😋 Detroit MI has so many AMAZING Arab cafes, and you can add this one to the list.

Protein waffle with all the fresh fruit and honey was awesome. Me and my fiancé split one and it was more than enough for the two of us However, the coffee wasn’t quite there for me. Fun with the honey and spices but wayyyy too dark and bitter for me. It was made well, but the beans themselves seemed pretty meh. I’d come back just for that waffle though! And the honey!
