NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"What happens at restaurants when they’re closed? Sandro’s, a classic red-sauce spot on the Upper East Side, becomes Asano, a Japanese cafe, during the day. This is the first of a few planned partnerships across the city for the cafe, where you can get matcha and strawberry lattes, and miso caramel morning buns." - will hartman, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, bryan kim

Google
Such a cute cafe! I've been meaning to come here since Asano opened, I loved the vibes and the matcha was so delicious. What a great idea to add a morning cafe to an evening restaurant. My new favorite matcha and work remote spot in UES! Will definitely be back. The pumpkin muffin was also fantastic. ☺️

I was so excited to finally try Asano, and it did not disappoint! I love the concept of a restaurant that’s dinner only during the week turning into a cozy coffee shop in the mornings. Such a great idea and vibe. I stopped by on a WFH day (trying new coffee shops is my little ritual), and this one’s definitely going on the favorites list. I couldn’t decide between the strawberry or mango matcha, so I started with strawberry. It was so good that I immediately went back for the mango. Both were amazing! Can’t wait to come back and try more of their seasonal coffee and matcha flavors. And a big shoutout to Kate for being so friendly and helpful!

Truly, this has become one of my favorite parts of my weekly running routine. I love stopping here after working out to get some reading/writing done and to grab coffee! Every drink I’ve tried so far is delicious (the matcha is actually really good)! Also I tried the gochujang scone once and it was also great—it paired well with their signature latte. Staff here are so sweet and attentive, and there is ample room to hangout for a bit!

Google
Pricey but worth it IMO, the coffee and baked goods are my favorite in Yorkville. The gochujang scone and miso morning bun are phenomenal. Seasonal flavors are unique and perfectly “not too sweet”. Also because it operates out of a restaurant during the day, there is so much seating.

Google
Let me preface that I will still but I’m reviewing mainly to bring the inconsistencies to their attention. I am excited to try their WV location. Today, I got six lattes in total, four of which were strawberry matchas and two were fig matchas. Unfortunately after I got back to my friend’s was when I noticed that the strawberry lattes did not have jam on the bottom like the fig did as shown in the photo. Also, much to my disappointment, there were clumps of matcha throughout all the drinks. This was a stark contrast to the lattes I’ve had in the past. I could not return to Asano to resolve the issue as they would’ve been closed by the time I walked back.

Google
Very strong coffee!! Excellent flat white. Delicious pastries, different offering from other coffee shops nearby.

Google

Really enjoyed the strawberry matcha latte and the morning bun was delicious too. I didn’t sit there but there was a lot of seating.

Yelp
FOR NEW LOCATION in WEST VILLAGE!!! I stumbled upon Asano on its second day open! It's a cafe located inside The Noortwyck, which normally only opens after 5 PM, so seeing it bustling in the morning was a surprise. A girl out front--Haley, I believe (sorry if I'm spelling that wrong!)--was incredibly sweet and welcoming. She was doing an amazing job bringing people in. She offered samples of the banoffee latte and the miso morning bun, and both were so good they literally stopped me in my tracks. I was on my way to the gym and had no plans to grab a coffee or pastry, but I had to turn around and get one after tasting them. They have a great selection of Asian-inspired drinks and pastries. I'm definitely going back to try the black sesame croissant. I ended up getting the Asano, a miso-coconut latte--something I didn't expect to love, but the salty, nutty flavors were phenomenal. This might become part of my daily routine! I think their hours are around 8-2 PM. Definitely stop by if you get the chance!

Yelp
Stopped by Asano a couple of times to check out their Asian-influenced drinks and pastries. While their execution misses the mark sometimes, it is a solid neighborhood coffee/matcha place that I can see myself visiting frequently!! Drinks: -Iced matcha latte is solid, not too creamy nor watery with a good matcha flavor -Asano latte reminded me more of a miso caramel than miso coconut. I can certainly taste the miso aftertaste but didn't get any coconut flavors. It was still good overall and not too sweet! -Cold brew - definitely better the second time with the dilution ratio Pastries/baked goods: -Matcha cookie was chewy and featured a strong matcha taste with a good ratio of white chocolate. It is very thin/almost crumbles upon touch and wish it was more chunky. -Gochujang scone has a nice spice kick towards the end. Love the cheese flavors and amount of scallions! -Miso morning bun is tasty with the sugar crystals and chewy interior -Black sesame coconut crossiant was yummy for sure! But it tasted more like coconut pineapple? Coconut flavors were prominent and perhaps it was the sugar in the coconut flake filling that gave it an additional fruity flavor (like pineapple or fig in my mind). The black sesame filling was tasty by itself but overpowered by the coconut. The croissant itself was flaky and chewy after a gentle toast. I absolutely love the space!! If you're looking for a quiet cafe to get some work done, this is it!!! I think this place use to be a restaurant so there are lots of tables with good lighting. Laptops definitely welcomed on weekdays (not sure about weekends tho). Staff are super nice and friendly!! Drinks come out at a reasonable pace (most drinks have to be picked up in the back). Unfortunately they cannot reheat the pastries on site.

Yelp
This is an Italian restaurant that is turned into a coffee shop in the mornings. There is plenty of seating in the back and great place to catch up with friends and also to do work from. When I was there everyone was on their laptops and phones. I had an Iced latte decaf it was ok nothing special. The barista/ guy working there was very nice.

Yelp
They're open on Saturday's now!!! What a game changer. I love all of their drinks, matcha drinks are solid - but that Asano Latte is really the best thing they've got. The black sesame coconut croissant is as good as it sounds - I would get it again and again if I could.

Yelp
It took a while to give Asano a try because of their limited hours. However, I'm glad I did. Their drinks and their pastries are also limited in variety, but they are delicious. There is plenty of seating as well.

Yelp
New Pop Up Coffee shop on the UES. Open M-F until 2:30 right on 86tg St! Just had to try it. Asian inspired - two latte flavors - I went with the miso one. Pretty good. Had the matcha loaf as I went about 15 mins before closing and that was the only thing left. It was good as well. Service was alright - you do have to go all the way to the back to get your latte. Nice little wfh cafe spot as there were a few people with their laptops.

Maggie Z.

Yelp
I enjoyed the miso caramel bun a lot! The matcha loaf was a bit dry and the strawberry matcha was a bit too milky

Angela G.

Yelp
!! Get the mango matcha latte - best matcha I've had in the city. Plus great spot to get some wifi and work in. The black pepper twist was also delicious.

Yelp
Brilliant idea. This didn't "used to be a restaurant." It is a current restaurant by night. Asano uses the space for their coffee shop til 2 pm. Don't know why more businesses don't join forces like this. My cappuccino was delicious and the space is great. Spacious and serene. Service is low key and pleasant.

Yelp
I've been a regular here for a while, but after today, I won't be coming back. I ordered the only muffin they had displayed, a pumpkin cardamom one, for $7. Instead, I was handed a banana nut muffin, which I'm allergic to. There was no sign for the banana nut muffin, and it wasn't even on display. When I politely asked for an exchange, the staff was incredibly rude and refused to make it right. For a place that charges premium prices, the lack of care and basic decency is disappointing.

Yelp
Great coffee & matcha and ample seating for doing work / hanging out. The staff are friendly and the miso caramel morning bun is out of this world. So happy to have this new spot in the neighborhood!

Freddyc M.

Yelp
Lovely place! a great idea to use the space in the morning. Friendly staff and great menu but they're always out of things that I want to try. Each of the 3 times that I went to try a special featured drink or pastry, they were already out and it was quite early.

Karl M.

Yelp
Great little cafe, excellent coffee drinks, tasty pastries. Plenty of space and tables to work in the back too.

Tayler S.

Yelp
Excellent. A+. Ordered a matcha latte. Happy to have in the neighborhood. Great selection of pastries.
