The Best Hotels for Solo Travelers in Tokyo

"Are you planning to combine your solo sojourn in Tokyo with business? Or perhaps you’re considering an extended stay and want some extra space and home comforts? The serviced apartments of the Marunouchi Ascott Tokyo are just the ticket, hitting the sweet spot between a high-end hotel and the privacy of independent living. The apartments come in a range of sizes, although most single travelers will find their needs are more than met by the studios with fully-stocked kitchenettes, or the one-bedrooms, which come with the addition of a living room. Guest facilities include a business center, gym, swimming pool and a lounge, and the delightful rooftop terrace is a green oasis offering panoramic views of your temporary home. The Marunouchi Ascott Tokyo provides direct access to Otemachi Station, and is within easy walking distance of Tokyo Station and the sophisticated shopping mecca of Ginza." - Louise George Kittaka

Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo

"How did it strike you on arrival?Though the Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo's "serviced apartments" might ring alarm bells—Tokyo apartments are notoriously petite—accommodations at this hotel are assuredly larger than your typical five-star, and maybe even shinier. Starting on the 22nd floor, the lobby is just as tall and tailored as any hotel, perhaps with a more relaxed, natural vibe. With its wooden floors and floor-to-ceiling bookcases showcasing various white ceramics, it feels quite like a living room—if living rooms had soaring ceilings and expanses of Bellagio marble. What’s the crowd like? It's an easy bet that most other guests are here for business. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. There's a soft focus on seasons throughout the property, an evergreen inspiration for hospitality that gives each room a certain vibe that's crisp, chic, and light enough to live in for longer than the average booking period. Sparkling, white-and-grey kitchens offset that vibe, all kitted out with svelte, homey appliances like an oven, dishwasher, and refrigerator—a rice cooker, if requested. And yet the room still functions like a five-star bedroom should, with control panels installed above each bedside table, built-in sound systems, and flatscreen satellite in either the bedroom or the delineated living room (depending on the apartment); there is also ample storage space. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? All apartments have a designated area suitable for working, whether it's a simple long table poised along the window with a chic desk chair, or with luck, with its very own nook in the Two-Bedroom Executive. There are both coffee tables and dining room tables, which make it a proper apartment, and if anyone spills soy sauce on their shirt, thankfully, there's a washing machine. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Bellagio marble is tiled along the walls and across the vanity, into the shower room and along the deep tub. It's a beautiful look, as if bathed in cream. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?As the hotel caters to longer stays and business stays, the Wi-Fi is free and high-speed. Room service: Worth it?Alas, these serviced apartments aren't set up with room service, but the kitchens are well-equipped for D.I.Y. cooking. Next to the 22nd-floor courtyard garden, Triple One (the property's sole restaurant) leans towards Singaporean dishes throughout at each meal. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Set in granite, an attractive medium-sized pool peers into a tidy glassed-in courtyard, while the gym has all of the necessary equipment. Housed throughout the top eight floors of a skyscraper, it's not alone—several big-money headquarters share the same building and neighborhood—and the structure itself connects with Otemachi Station. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The rooftop terrace is a highlight, a lovely, lush oasis with just a handful of cushiony seats. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Coming to Tokyo for business, or with a family? There are home-style facilities." - Keith Flanagan

Hotel has a convenient location with Otemachi station entrance in same exact building around the corner. A few 24h conbini’s are located around. We had a room facing the park with a stunning view at the sunset and Mt.Fuji. The room itself is clean and spacious, everything needed was inside, staff changed towels daily. Smoking room is around reception and is really comfy as there are 2 vending machines. The only downside - pool operating ours are ending early, which is a bit strange as walking around Tokyo usually does not end around 6-7 pm. and would be great to stretch you legs after a long walk swimming in a pool before going to sleep

Google
An absolutely awesome place. Great staff and all the rooms are superb. Otemachi station is right below the property and one stop away from Tokyo station. We love the place for its central location and being in the business district means it’s pretty quiet at night. ||We have stayed in the tatami room twice in the past year. And had a chance to stay in the two bed room deluxe. Both rooms are a ten out of ten for us. ||We will be back soon.

Overall great serviced apartment hotel. Large one bedroom suite with full kitchen and washer/dryer was very useful for my family. Room was clean and spacious. Location in Marunouchi near the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station was very convenient. Good gym and common area to hang out. Restaurant was just average. Would definitely stay here again.

Google
A very nice and practical stay. The room was clean and well-equipped with a small kitchenette and laundry, which is especially convenient for longer visits. However, the bathroom design—with a clear glass separating the toilet—lacks privacy and could be improved.

We had a disappointing experience at Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo. While the room and location were excellent, the service and cold attitude of the staff were a letdown. Staff were unfriendly and inflexible throughout our stay. They refused to store our luggage temporarily, citing lack of space, and even declined to provide salt for children’s food, stating the restaurant was closed for a private event. The breakfast was the poorest we’ve encountered at any 4/5-star property — very limited options, especially for kids (no pancakes, minimal fruit), and the staff began clearing the buffet before 10 AM. On the second day, they argued over a forgotten breakfast coupon, despite us providing our room number and requesting a simple verification. Overall, the rigid policies and lack of basic hospitality were surprising — especially in Japan, where every other hotel we stayed at was warm, courteous, and accommodating. For a hotel in this category, this was well below expectations.

My wife and I just celebrated turning 70 in Japan, four nights in Tokyo, ten night cruise on Cunard of southern Japan, then had the pleasure to spend two nights at the Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo. We have never stayed at a nicer hotel in all our travels. It is a five minute walk to the Imperial Gardens, easy access to underground restaurants. The staff went out of their way to stay special.

This hotel was a highlight of Tokyo. It was a beautiful, clean, spacious, and luxurious retreat to return to at night. We particularly enjoyed breakfast, the pool, and its location by the Royal Palace and train station. The staff was superb as always.

Very central location good facilities and very clean. Whilst the restaurant is closed in the evening there are a number of restaurants in the basement of the building. Service as you would expect for Tokyo is faultless. Would definitely stay again.

Yelp
Note: would recommend for families but if you want the actual Tokyo experience, then this is not the right hotel for you. (It's like the FiDi area of Tokyo... like PwC is right next to you... lol - all business buildings and nothing else). We stayed here for 5 nights, in a 2 bd/2bath, with a tatami room; a living room and kitchen. It comes with amazing view of the imperial palace. The day & night view is just beautiful. The staff are all very welcoming, English friendly (probably a requirement bc of their clienteles). Love: The rooms, beds and seating area are all comfortable, bathroom is nice, kitchen is easy to understand with instructions. The view is spectacular! (Tripod for a group photo with a city backdrop). There's a Otemachi train station "entrance" right by the hotel (excellent easy access when it rains) BUT... you'll need a good 5-10 mins to get to the desired train lines (like Chiyoda or god forbid Marunouchi!!) There's also a Lawson right by, with some small eateries... it's possible they are still building this station out. Ugh: The location is not great for luggage goers... it's not "10 mins" from Tokyo station like some people stated. It definitely takes a good 15-25 mins depending on the time of day. Rush hour... will take you 25 mins (minimum!). And the millions of stairs... ok, enjoy your workout. Overall - you get what you pay for - lux living experience and quietness. Did we enjoy our stay? Absolutely. Would I stay here again? Probably not. #yelplife #tokyo #japan #travelforfood

Yelp
A friend recommended the Ascott as it was newly built and within a 10 min walk from Tokyo station. Super accessible from various subway lines nearby made this hotel awesome for us. As others have stated, this hotel caters to more business travelers or those who know the city well, again perfect for us as we do come 2-3 times a year. I don't need a concierge to help me make dinner reservations or provide recommendations. Bloody hell, this is Tokyo where even the food at a convenience store blow away most restaurants back at home. Be adventurous, walk into any of the restaurants nearby and be surprised at how good the food is here. We have always missed sakura season with all of our previous trips and was fortunate to catch the sakuras in full bloom this trip. This hotel is less than a 20 min walk to Chidorigafuchi park which is a spectacular place to view cherry blossoms. It was so good that we went back there 4x. I don't think I've ever written a review of a hotel, so this will be a first. Hotels were super expensive late Mar/Apr and our usual hotel was over 1k/night. Decided to finally try this hotel as it's location is awesome and even had a washing machine in the room. Exchanged several emails asking for confirmation and booked our room the next day. Wasn't expecting much but was blown away as I walked into the room. Inside was a full kitchen w/stove, a fridge, dining table, couch, tatami mattress area, full king sized bed and 2 bathrooms. Had to pinch myself as I couldn't believe the sheer size of this room. As with every hotel in Japan, everything was clean and is well maintained. Cleaning service did a great job of tidying up each morning. Front desk personnel were there to help answer questions and always welcomed us back. Internet here is amazingly fast and reliable. My only complaint was with the bath products they offer. Wasn't exactly a fan or the scent and ended up picking some stuff up at a Lawson's. Wished they still offered the l'occitane products. Will more than likely be staying here going forward. I freaking love this hotel but wished they were apart of a bigger chain.

Yelp
This hotel is actually really nice and served me well. Full gym, pool, spa, lounge areas inside and outside as well as a restaurant. The rooms are great very comfortable setting and nicely put together. Yes the chairs and couches are a little stiff but you have to understand it's a hotel people come and go like clock work so everything has to withstand the abuse of luggage, kids, pets ect. Can't fault them for selecting functional furniture. The hotel room had a full fridge, electric stove, espresso machine, electric hot water tea kettle, electric dishwasher, bath and standing shower, electric washer machine as well as hotel dry cleaning, two TVs, complete living room along with a small dinning table and desk. It was more of a studio apartment. I enjoyed my two week stay here, I'd definitely book this again.

Yelp
I'm actually pretty disappointed in the Ascott after my recent stay. Here's three reasons why: 1) They didn't offer to carry our luggage to our room, even though we have a 2yo and my wife is visibly pregnant. 2) When we inquired about dinner reservations, they said "Sure, we can do that!" But they would only make reservations if we knew where. They wouldn't make any recommendations. Instead they said we should go down to the subway station and see if there are izakayas there we like. 3) Everything is hard!!! As in, not soft. The couch is ridiculous. The cabinet at the end of our bed looks like it's soft on top, actually it's not!! I ended up walking into it and got a nice cut on my leg. Check out the pics. Overall I think this place is geared towards business travelers, not families or tourists. Other hotels on our trip were much more accommodating.

Yelp
If you're looking for a huge room in Tokyo, this is it. If you want to be in a vibrant area, this is not it. I stayed here for the last two nights of a two weeks stay and it served me well. The bathroom is gigantic with L'Occtaine products, that was a nice touch, as was the kitchenette. This is a hotel geared toward business travelers. It's proximity to the subway, you can walk there without going outside and it's amenities are nice. If you want a quiet place to relax before a marathon flight, this is it. I wouldn't have been happy here at the start of my trip but I was quiet please with it at the end.
