Get to Know the Indigenous Narragansett People of Rhode Island
"Operated by Dawn and Cassius Spears, the farm preserves traditional Narragansett agriculture—growing historic flint corn, succotash beans, squash, and “wuttahimneash” (heart berries)—and demonstrates time-honored techniques like hilling, in which corn is planted on mounds with beans and squash in the surrounding valleys to improve germination. The property offers tours and a chance to see a wetu (traditional home), providing visitors with hands-on insight into seasonal foodways and living cultural practices such as Strawberry, Green Bean, and Green Corn Thanksgivings." - Stacey Leasca
