The Best Restaurants In The Outer Banks, North Carolina

"When you walk into Ashley’s Espresso Parlour, you’ll be greeted by large bags of coffee beans, well-stocked fridges with rows of seltzer and kombucha, and a collection of artwork and gifts by local artists. The coffee itself is great, and there’s a fun selection of cold brew shakes that’ll simultaneously keep you caffeinated and satisfy your inner 10-year-old. They also sell pastries and bagels if you want to make this your one-stop shop before you bike along the beach or through the Wright Brothers Memorial park. " - anne cruz

Google
Fantastic spot with great vibes and even better coffee! We ordered four drinks—three iced lattes and one drip coffee with sugar-free syrup—and all of them were excellent. I especially loved the Sweet Baby Jesus and the Ol' Helga, which was exceptionally yummy! The staff was super friendly and helpful, making us feel right at home. The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy, with a fun, beachy vibe and cool decor (loved the skateboards and art!). It’s a great place to relax or grab something delicious on the go. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!

Google
Eclectic coffee shop with AMAZING COFFEE and baked goods! Very friendly staff. I stayed in OBX 5 days and came every morning to enjoy the environment and coffee before walking the beach which was 2 minute walk. I love how they sell local artists work!! They sell other cool stuff and coffee too. They have a great sitting areas with instruments to play, games, and coloring tasks!! Very zen chatting areas made the daily walks there something to looks forward to! Many locals hang out here. They also sell beer and wine. You can tell it's a very loved community hang out! One day, a local artist was painting her work. Awesome place!!

Google
Coffee was full of flavor, and the atmosphere was quant. The decor is filled with local artist creations, some of which is for sale! Very unique ambience, perfect for a beach getaway. Finally, the pastries we tried were very good, overall. However, the chocolate mouse muffin was likely the best muffin I’ve ever had!

Google
A cozy gem with art, heart and flavor! Ashley’s Espresso Parlour is the kind of place that instantly makes you feel welcome. From the warm greeting at the door to the thoughtful details in every cup, you can tell this shop was created with love. The espresso is smooth and rich, never bitter, and their specialty drinks are both creative and comforting—I had a Lebanese Blond latte that was hands down the best I’ve tasted. The atmosphere is relaxed but inviting, with cozy seating that encourages you to slow down and stay awhile. It’s perfect for catching up with a friend, reading a book, or just taking a quiet moment for yourself. But what really sets Ashley’s apart is the genuine kindness of the staff. There’s a sense of community here—like you’re not just a customer, you’re a guest. If you’re looking for quality coffee, a warm environment, and service that feels personal and real, I highly recommend stopping by. Ashley’s is more than a coffee shop—it’s a little sanctuary.Oh and take home custom roasted coffee beans!

Google
Sooo good! I went several times during my trip to Obx… it gets busy, I saw the line go out the door one day! I went before 9am and it wasn’t as packed. The coffee and pastries were very yummy and I loved the vibe of all of the art and trinkets ☺️

Google
Cute shop, big menu with wide variety and retail items as well. Seating is very limited we had White haze and mocha and both were delicious and good pricing!

Google
Absolutely don’t want to miss this hidden gem! Huge coffee & drink selection with the perfect atmosphere & the sweetest employees! My new favorite go to spot 😍🤤

Google
So far, this is the best coffee shop I have ever been to on the eastern seaboard. Their Lebanese Blonde iced coffee with pistachio and cinnamon is amazing and the raspberry iced espresso has the best natural raspberry flavor around. The local artwork and t-shirts are unique and very cool. If you ever find yourself in the Outer Banks, Ashley’s Espresso Parlour should be your go to coffee shop. Attached is my Lebanese Blonde iced coffee with pistachio and cinnamon.

Yelp
This was such a cute coffee shop right in the middle of Kitty Hawk, NC. It was a little tricky to figure out the parking situation, and the interior of this building is quite tiny and packed full of things for sale, but, that is the whole charm of the place. They have wonderful espresso drinks (I tried a raspberry mocha), a large selection of pastries, and even some ice cream sandwiches. I want to know that they had options for all dietary requirements which I love! They had a local artist painting in the interior of the store. There was lots of local art for sale and jewelry plus stickers and postcards, etc. it was our final stop during our Outer Banks trip and I would absolutely recommend it.

Yelp
Love this coffee spot!! If you're looking for beachy coastal vibes while in the OBX this is the place to go. The coffee is great, the flavors are unique and honestly the prices are the most affordable on the OBX. when it comes to good quality coffee with cool flavor combinations this is a great place!! My boyfriend got the blackberry cobbler matcha with white chocolate and blackberry and it was DELISH!!!! I got the Lebanese blonde with latte which has pistachio and cinnamon. They have dairy alternatives for those of you who want oat or almond milk. The plus side if they sell art from local artists and you can look while you wait.

Yelp
Great hidden gem! A friend recommend it. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but the inside makes up for it. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. It was pretty crowded, but service was super fast. A lot to choose from! There were also crafts and paintings among other things for sale. 2 drip flavored coffees. A little strong for me, but you can put as much cream in it as you want. Prices are very reasonable. And you get 1 free refill with the house coffees. Will definitely go back when I return in the fall!

Yelp
Popular coffee shop in Kill Devil Hills with excellent coffee, matcha lattes, and pastries! We stopped here after beach yoga and found a parking spot out front. Due to the line, we anticipated a longer wait. We ordered at the counter and planned to view the artwork and gifts for sale. Before we could, our order was already completed. We stayed to check out some of the items before leaving. The cafe is a little cramped so not a great option for dining in. It's perfect for ordering to-go.
google avatar

Taylor V.

Yelp
The coffee shop is very cute. There are some small items for sell, mostly artsy items and some jewelry. The coffee was just good, nothing exceptional. The barista taking our order was overly rude. overall experience is 4/5.
google avatar

Yelp
New here? This place is BUSY - come ready to wait in line, we were outside the door on a Monday morning around 9. But it is adorable inside, plenty of merchandise to browse before and after you order. I wish they had a few more options for baked goods, but enjoyed the banana nut muffin I got! Also had an amazing iced chai latte. Somewhat on the pricier side but not too bad. I wish their blender was working because I would've tried a frozen drink to beat the heat! There is some seating inside but not enough for the crowd this place gathers! Lots of beautiful artwork on the walls inside :) Outside they have limited parking and a nice shaded area for sitting and reading/eating.

Yelp
This is a small coffee shop close to the main drag in KDH. They offer a few small bites and of course, coffee. I was hopeful for my drink, but alas, it was fair. The flavor was a little bitter and the milk was slightly textured too much. They use regular coffee mugs, which is better than paper mugs but not as good as an actual latte mug. Given the name of the place, I was wanting more detail out into the final product. They sell art in various formats and they have limited inside seating with music playing in the background. It's a good hang but my overall rating is just ok.
google avatar

Zack S.

Yelp
This was a good stop if you're looking to pick up a cup of coffee on the go. Not a lot of places to sit. Also not a lot of food items. Overall the coffee tasted pretty good, and the staff was pretty nice but they were wicked busy. Parking is also tight, and we had to walk a block or so. The vibe seemed to, but it was a little too packed to get any kind of real ambience.
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
Saw their cute banana sign when driving by and had to stop in. They have a small parking lot and it does get busy, so be aware of that. They sell a lot of cool merchandise and local wares within as well as a lot of coffee and tea options! I tried a hot cappuccino with coconut milk and it wasn't as good as one I had elsewhere in OBX. My friend got one of their specialty iced drinks, Lebanese Blonde, (which had cinnamon and pistachio) and it was delicious. We tried a bottled kombucha they had for sale as well (black lime and mint) and it was fantastic. I'd go back for the kombucha for sure and would try a different hot coffee beverage.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the salted caramel mocha that I tried from here. This is the first coffee shop I've been to that offers that type of flavor and they nailed the balance between the caramel, chocolate, espresso, and salt. I'm not local to the area but I would definitely return to try more flavors if I'm ever back. Eclectic interior and friendly baristas. It was packed when we went and I have a feeling it's usually like that. Parking is a bit difficult as the lot is tiny.

Kayla S.

Yelp
This was my first stop during my first trip to the outer banks and it was one of the best coffees I've ever had with great service! 10/10 recommend.

Charlie P.

Yelp
Yeah I'm biased.. I go to the beach for sunrises.. A number of years ago I saw a group of lady surfers everyday catching waves before going off to work.. How cool... Eventually i met Ashley (one of the girls) and found out she was opening her shop.. So I snooped around as Erick her husband magically transformed a blank blah interior to one of the funkiest places ever.. If you look around there is a dollar bill hanging on a wall from their first customer-Me...Folks have written about the coffee so I won't.. It's the atmosphere.. Of course regulars talk with each other.. But what is neat is that everybody talks with each other.. "Visitor-Yeah-Local-Yeah "and then off to the races.. Where ya from- we think we might does this- good idea?-The kids want to XYZ-Yeah go here and ask for ABC and tell them I sent ya..You coming tomorrow- see ya then.. new friendships easily made here.......

Mike D.

Yelp
Coffee snobs. This is your place. Cortado. Americano. The profile on the beans is so good. As good as anywhere I've been. The outside looks sketch, but they will take care of you once inside. Buy some beans for home. Legit!
google avatar

Yelp
We decided to check this place out and parking here is a nightmare. When we finally got inside, the person taking orders was not in any mood for customer service or just generally helpful, it felt like I was inconveniencing them since the workers were just complaining to each other. To top it off, they forgot our croissants, which is just weird since you just need to grab something that's already made. The coffee itself was not even good. I would not go back to this place and just go to the front porch cafe if I wanted to go to a local coffee shop nearby.
google avatar

Jen R.

Yelp
I'm from a big city and can attest to the quality of the coffee drinks here, the syrup, and roast of the beans. Got a caramel mocha and everything tasted very balanced and high quality. The whipped cream appeared to be homemade chocolate whip and it was a delicious add on to the drink that wasn't too heavy but a nice addition. By far my favorite coffee shop so far on the island. 10/10!
google avatar

Rocky R.

Yelp
Good coffee but a little pricey. Lots of specialty coffees to chose from. I was a little put off that their display boards do not have prices on them. They also do not have a paper menu that you can take with you.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
This coffee shop has some of the best coffee I've ever had. I seriously came here almost everyday of vacation. The indoor seating was cozy and comfortable. They had a nice roof top patio and outdoor lawn, too. There were so many interesting drinks, but South Swell was my favorite! I loved their homemade whipped cream. I always got a delicious bagel with my coffee (bagels from lighthouse). I still dream about that coffee and bagel and can't wait to come back here again. I just need to plan another vacation!

Lena R.

Yelp
Amazing. Absolutely delicious! Super busy but they are so fast and the coffees were perfect every time. Just a heads up that the parking is rough so we would have one person order and the other circle the block and it just made life so much easier.
google avatar

Neema B.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way out of OBX. It's a cute little coffee shop located off Croatan Hwy. inside there's lots of coffee and espresso selections as well as wine, pastries and more. They don't make it easy for a first timer to choose because everything sounds good! I chose the Lebanese blonde which is an espresso based drink with cinnamon and pistachio syrup. It's on the list of barista favorites. The espresso had a unique flavor and bite but I did enjoy it. They have several seating areas and also lots of local handmade items for sale. This is a cute shop where you could get comfy and easily spend a long afternoon.

Yelp
Wife and I stopped in after a visit to the Avalon Pier. We both enjoyed our drinks so much! Cool little spot with easy parking access and in a great location. Very chill with plenty of napkins, straws, etc. would come back again!
google avatar

Falecia P.

Yelp
I really loved the vibe of this place. There was artwork all over the walls (that could be purchased from the looks of it) and they even had little things, I assume from small businesses, that you could purchase. It was a quick visit and I was not sure what to order so I tried the Woody drink. Unfortunately I did not like it very much but I think I just chose the wrong drink. If I'm ever in the area again I would love to come back and try something else. I also ordered and chocolate chip cookie for my daughter that we shared and it was delicious.
google avatar

Mary H.

Yelp
The best local spot for espresso, coffee, and fun sweet drinks like the "CocoNana". They have homemade whipped cream which you can request on top of any drinks. Staff is friendly and kind. They can make a frozen kids hot chocolate too which was a WIN for us! Start a punch card at the beginning of your vacation and you'll have a freebie drink in no time.
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
I'd be willing to go again, but I wasn't in love with this shop. Husband got the espresso and coffee, which had strong fruity tones to it, a bit too fruity. I got an iced mocha. Nutty tones, which I didn't mind, but wasn't expecting. Inside is cute, showcasing local artists, but we ended up spilling his coffee out and going to a different shop.
google avatar

K O.

Yelp
I love coffee but wasn't a fan of this coffee. The baked goods were stale. The shop is too cluttered and not a comfortable place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. Maybe a local favorite but not a favorite of this out of towner.
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
This little "hidden gem" (not really because it's on the corner right off the main roads seems to be a locals spot and def has all those vibes. For a weekday afternoon, this place still had a steady stream of folks coming and going. We ordered the sand spur in 2 diff styles: as an iced latte with oat milk and as a blended drink. The blended was clearly more sugary, but both were honestly delicious- not for the coffee purists of heart. Get a pastry, find some memorabilia, some jewelry, some local prints, or even a cold bottle one in their refrigerated section. We enjoyed this place for sure

Yelp
Was on vacation to OBX and was most impressed with Ashley's of any restaurant/creamery/café visited. Kind staff, sweet specialty drinks, and artsy ambiance were the highlights. Our group went multiple times over the course of our trip, and everything I had was amazing. I got the chai cold brew shake, an iced butter beer latte, and an everything bagel with onion cream cheese. The only thing that was mediocre was the bagel--everything else was amazing! I tried my friend's ice white mocha raspberry drink, and it was superb. Well done!

Yelp
One of our fav places to come while in town :) The Java Chip Shake is so yummy and the cortado is great

Yelp
Best bet for quality fresh roasted coffee and beans in The Outer Banks. Used to NYC's plethora of quality coffeehouses, and upon arriving in The Outer Banks, we tried a few other cafes which we won't mention but they ranged from god awful to cafe-stuck-in-the-90s. Ashley's had quality options for the coffee purists as well as those who wanted more of a coffee flavored ice cream shake. I loved their nitro and cold brew. Their espresso drinks were a bit more acidic than I liked but decently prepared. Their pastry options were ok, nothing to write home about. They had a wonderful selection of non-coffee offerings like beer and specialty carbonated/fruit/tea/herbal beverages in their cold case. They also support local vendors/artists with their wares which was a nice offering. And roast their own coffee on premises! I'm amazed at how much they were able to squeeze into that space. There is no real rhyme, reason or esthetic to the cafe but it kinda works for what it is. Eclectic is probably the best word for the overall vibe. The look doesn't belie the quality of their coffee products and I highly recommend making this your cafe of choice in this area.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
It was fast, the coffee was good, the service was good, the interior felt a little crowded, but it was kitschy and lovely.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
Great coffee spot! It seems a bit less busy than some of the other top-rated joints in the area, which we appreciated. They not only offer coffee, but lots of beautiful local art. I got their Sweet Baby Jesus with almond milk which was delicious. Decor is funky, staff is friendly. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Corinna D.

Yelp
Ashley's Espresso Parlour is the very best coffee place in the #OBX! The coffee is excellent and each order is prepared exactly the way you want it- if you don't know what you want, they have some very creative flavor combos or can prep to meet your vision. The parlour is spacious with lots of cozy seating, decorated with art from local artists (I always see something I want) and they have outdoor space with seating as well. People may not be aware that Ashley's roasts their own beans and can send their magical beans directly to you, even if you live out of state. So check out their website and try a few of their coffee bean varieties. Jamelle's Love espresso is our favorite Thank you Ashley and Eric!!!
google avatar

Allison L.

Yelp
First time here after visiting OBX for many years. My new favorite coffee shop. Helpful, friendly service and great coffee with so many options. The baked goods we ordered, blueberry scone and muffins, were delicious as well.

Dominique H.

Yelp
Can have a busy line but love the specialty lattes! We got the woodys and the white hayes coffees. While waiting they have many items to browse. Dog friendly as well.
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
I didn't eat at Ashley's but they advertise breakfast sandwiches, but they only have bagels w/cream cheese and croissants filled with spinach. They were very nice just not clear about the menu offerings. It appeared their coffee drinks were very popular.
google avatar

Gabbie L.

Yelp
The coffee was "eh", the cookie was the only good thing about that shop. Their merchandise was immodest and had repeated cussing, definitely not a good place for kids! Waiter was friendly.
google avatar

Zachary C.

Yelp
Not a coffee snob by any means, and I'm always up for something new to me. After a relative pushed this place called Ashley's hard for days, I decided I o give it a try. Not sure what it was, but our coffee was awful. Even the cold brew my wife got was undrinkable. We do have some coffee snobs in the family, so we had them try both. Even they couldn't drink it. Maybe it was the day, maybe it was the particular brew. Either way, it'll be a while before returning. Parking is weird. Wheelchair sign is posted sideways and there are no spaces painted. So, really no idea where to park. Just...park, I guess. Inside felt cramped and a little overwhelming. Ladies behind the counter were nice enough, but also gave off a vibe of being annoyed we were there. It was hard to explain.

Colton T.

Yelp
This is one of the best coffee shops me and my girlfriend have ever been too! I highly recommend this place and wish I was local to OBX to get more drinks here! They have great service, get here earlier to avoid the wait, this place is busy for a reason! The decorations and shop are great too! They have really cool art pieces on sale. They offer lots of seating inside and outside which is very nice as well! Go here if you're in the area! 10/10.
google avatar

Hillary K.

Yelp
Is there any better than coffee after coming off the beach? Ashley's is the best coffee on the Outer Banks and just steps from Helga Beach Access so whether I'm warming up after sunrise on a December morning or grabbing an Iced Lebanese Blonde after a hot day, it's my go to. The staff are friendly and chill. The music is always on point.Im a big fan of their cranberry orange muffins. They also stock great handmade items like earrings and pottery. You can pick from a great selection of beer. They even have amazing ice cream sandwiches featuring coffee ice cream. Be sure to pick up beans (we usually choose the Red Dawn blend) roasted on site for your beach house. The saddest day of the week is when we have to head home to Pennsylvania, but we always soften the blow by grabbing coffee from Ashley's for the road. Until next time!
google avatar

Belle J.

Yelp
Eclectic cool spot to grab a delicious cup of coffee and a breakfast treat to go or hang out in the cool on "Central Perk" style seating. While the furniture is older it is sooo comfortable. Also checkout the local art for sale while you're there. Conveniently located in Kitty Hawk & not a chain! Come support our local businesses and chill for a while
google avatar

Amber K.

Yelp
Something I look forward to on vacations is trying out coffee spots each morning. For years I have never found coffee that wowed me . ( which is ok) but TODAY! I knew when I had to wait about 15 mins in a line, outside the building just to get in. This must be worth waiting for....... HOLY COW!!! This place is mind blowingly good. LIFE CHANGING delicious. I got a South swell latte on ice w/ oat milk. So so good.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. Really good pastries. So why 3 stars? There were two gentleman while I was there that seemingly worked there/were owners that had no shoes on and were freely walking around the kitchen. Completely and utterly repulsive.
google avatar

Sav C.

Yelp
vacationing in OBX from california. my husband and I were looking for coffee, so we figured we would give this a try. when I tell you this is THE BEST coffee drink I have ever had. we both loved the CocoNona sooo much that we returned everyday of our 7 day vacation!! please do yourself a favor and check out Ashley's Espresso Parlour! you won't regret it!
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Recommended by a local! Such a great place with tons of drink options. I love the "high maintenance" menu options with specialty drinks. Yummy ice cream sandwiches
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Roomy, lovely find after a long ride to the beach. Delicious coffee, friendly staff and a "hey, stay a while" vibe. Screw Starbucks, this is the play, y'all.

Hunter R.

Yelp
Our favorite coffee shop to go to in obx! The lattes are amazing and I love that they carry local art for sale.

Chris B.

Yelp
Really cool vibe and great coffee. I had an Americana and my wife iced mocha. Super friendly service. Next time I go I'll try something to eat

TJ W.

Yelp
Coffee and pastries were good. Service was quick and efficient. Cute place inside. But my wife and I both had stomach issues shortly after finishing our coffees and pastries. And as avid coffee consumers who drink it daily, something wasn't right when we both started having issues.

Victoria E.

Yelp
The coffee was excellent. Everyone loved what they had. Those cold brew shakes are fantastic.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick cup of Chai Tea before heading to the Aquarium near Manteo. Cool little spot and really laid back. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed it a lot. Will be back!
