Ashley's Ice Cream

Jennifer H.

Google
Love it. Can’t beat their creamy, homemade ice cream. We love strawberry, sweet cream, Oreo coffee, and any seasonal flavors. I’m only leaving 4 stars because our custom ice cream cake was missing two elements: it had all one flavor instead of 2, and the oreo crust was missing. I even had the employee read the order back to me when I placed it. It was still delicious, just not what we ordered. I called and spoke to a manager, who apologized but did not offer any kind of restitution. That said, the ice cream cake was delicious!

Shruti S.

Google
So many ice cream flavors. We had the Oreo, coconut, vanilla and mango shorbet. Coconut and mango were best. They have lot of non-dairy and sugar free options.

Lac Nhan Phan M.

Google
Service can be more friendlier. Ice cream and milkshakes were ok. But when they served the milkshake, it was quite dirty probably because overloaded. Also in the ice cream of my wife she found a hair.

Samuel W.

Google
Consistently delicious homemade ice cream. I'd specifically recommend getting the sweet cream ice cream with peanut butter sauce (they use the best, Oringer's) and Reese's peanut butter cups. It's a perfect sweet and salty combo. Looking forward to trying their Downside Watson sundae in the future, a huge seven scoop sundae with nine toppings served in a frisbee.

Google
This ice cream spot in New Haven, CT is the to-die-for spot for desserts. If you have a dog, this is the #1 ice cream shop to bring them. They have treats and vanilla cream for pups. This shop was named after a dog, Ashley, and as such all the employees have so much patience and kindness for dogs. One guy came out, petted our dog and gave her a treat. You don’t get that treatment at any ice cream shop! Plus, look at that wall of Dog Fame. So many dogs and they have a whole wall dedicated to that awesomeness. Hot damn. Dog friendliness aside, their flavors are insanely good too. You can tell because I’ve rated this 5/5, which I rarely do. Their best flavor I tried is Coffee Oreo. Lot of sugar but it’s so good. In fact we came back again, and I had it again. First time I had: Butter Pecan + Coffee Oreo. Really awesome combo. Second time: cookie batter + coffee Oreo. Cookie dough was bit too sweet but was nice. I would rate ice cream itself as 4/5 and it’s not the best, and variety 3/5 because I feel they could have more, but given candor and general dog friendliness of all the staff (PS they do allow them inside!) I will rate up. After pizza from Wooster Street which is right down from Yale, this ice cream shop is nearby and it’s THE destination to stop by. If we bring our dog or ever visit CT again, we’ll definitely stop by Ashley’s in New Haven. High five!

Adati T.

Google
One of the best ice cream spots around. Also reasonably priced. I had their milkshake it had more of the milk flavor than the icecream flavor but I think that is because of the flavor I chose. Otherwise a great ice cream spot.

Parisa D.

Google
This ice cream shop in the heart of New Haven is a gem with a rich history. The variety of ice cream flavors and toppings is incredible, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The shop's nostalgic charm make every visit a delightful experience. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this iconic spot is a must-visit for ice cream lovers!

Ilana Falcão de A.

Google
The dairy free options are great, I really appreciate dairy free ice cream that isn’t just some fruit sorbet that feels like a slushy. They use coconut milk as a base and it’s creamy and tasty. Quality options for the sundae as well, with different kinds of nuts.

Yelp
I absolutely love Ashley's with my whole heart. I end up here post midterms/finals without fail. Their ice cream is great for celebrating and for crying. I've tried a variety of flavors from coffee Oreo, peanut butter Oreo, Oreo, heath bar, chocolate, peanut butter cup, and I'm sure more. They're all good but I always recommend visitors to try one of their Oreo flavors. The single scoop is pretty generous in my opinion. The toppings scare me though because they're behind a partial glass screen and someone could totally touch it or sneeze on it, especially when crowded There's a few tables and places to sit/stand inside but often, my friends and I find a different place on campus to eat it and hang out.

Jill S.

Yelp
ice cream is amazing Servers are knowledable about flavors, give sample. Love being able to sit at the counter in the window

Yelp
Pretty standard ice cream joint with lots of favors and toppings. Their Oreo flavors tend to stand out, and they often have fun combinations like Strawberry Oreo, Peanut Butter Oreo, or Coffee Oreo. Not my favorite spot in New Haven, but great location by Yale's campus and the Shops at Yale. Their prices are also very fair for the serving sizes.

Yelp
Great local ice cream. Fresh stretchy creamy ice cream, nostalgic dog-centric decor, kind service, and yummy treats at reasonable prices. My wife loves the coffee Oreo and we've gone out of our way to come for it on several trips to New Haven. Of course, Arethusa on Chapel is its main competition, but we find Ashley's ice cream a bit stretchier, softer, and more fun to eat.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick sweet treat and I' sure glad I did! The staff was very friendly and ordering was a breeze. The inside was also super cute and even had a wall of tons of pictures of DOGS!!! Who wouldn't love that!!?? I got the lemon sorbet, which was refreshing and tart. Great amount for the price as well-- 2 large scoops for around $5. My friend got a waffle cone bowl with flavors I don't remember, but she loved it as well.
google avatar

Karolina S.

Yelp
My boyfriend parked right across from this place, when we went to get dinner. On our way back to the car - we decided to stop by grab some dessert. Prices were really reasonable. The waffle cup with 2 scoops and 3 toppings was only $10. The staff was lovely! And the flavors/ toppings we choose were delicious! The inside of the place give an impression of a pizza place more than an ice cream parole, but it doesn't takes away from the experience. They were clearly open for over 30 years - on the wall they had awards dating from 1990 to 2019. I cannot believe it was our first time at Ashley's when we had been in the neighborhood at least 4 times in the last 3 years. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
My partner and I frequent this spot very often haha. Not my favorite ice cream shop in New Haven, but definitely still a good one! They have all of your classic ice cream shop vibes and flavors. It doesn't feel like high end ice cream, but it feels like the ice cream you get at the chain places (but a little more elevated). My personal go to is always the coffee oreo! We've tried a bunch of other flavors but those always seem too sweet. Normally priced with normal ice cream portions.
google avatar

Alana E.

Yelp
The ice cream was good the service was fun and a lot of flavors to choose from including nondairy so something for everyone. It was small so we were up on everyone but I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Annie W.

Yelp
A small and unassuming shop with limited seating inside but their icecream does not miss! Got a regular size gingersnap ice cream in a cup. Their portion for the regular was 2 very large scoops! Can never have too much icecream but in this case, unless you want to try multiple flavors, a single scoop would have been enough. Prices were very reasonable. The gingersnap flavor was delicious with soft cookie crumbs swirled throughout. They have plentiful flavors to choose from and we were helped quickly.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious, no frills ice cream spot! The flavors were amazing. We had the Oreo and the cookie dough. The cookie dough is a MUST HAVE! It was so delicious! The portions of a normal scoop were also really large. It was $6 and definitely worth it! Service was also great!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great option with loads of flavors to make 4 ice cream lovers very happy! The service was prompt and we were allowed to taste different flavors before ordering. This is much appreciated to be happy with your order since some places have never brought back the bite size tastings again post-pandemic. There are some seats in the front of the shop, loads of pics of dogs and people with ice cream, and stools facing the street to enjoy the view and people watch while enjoying your ice cream or shake! There is no restroom but we were told the pizza shop next door is used to folks running in there to use their restroom. I loved my 3 scoops of 1) Almond Joy, 2) Coffee Oreo, and 3) Peanut Butter something, Explosion maybe? Sooo yummy. We all chose three flavors and got 3 scoops since the price was reasonable and not too much more than the 2 scoops I thought I wanted.

Yelp
I LOVED this place. It was my first time coming here and I loved how old school it felt. I'm not from the area but I appears to be a local favorite and I could see why. It's creamy and tasty and not too sugary but still sweet! Next time I come here I'll make sure to take my time and sit down! Thank you to the staff for being so nice and for keeping the place so clean and comfortable! If you're in between ice cream places come here!

Yelp
If it was summer and not February, Ashley's Ice Cream typically has a long line of patrons waiting to get their tasty treat. I walked inside to find three employees ready to serve, and no one else waiting. They offered samples. I tried Nutella Chip, and immediately knew that's what I'd be getting. My friend and I shared a cup of Banana and Nutella Chip. This was for sure a very generous portion. Both of the flavors were creamy, flavorful and so true to their names. The Nutella Chip had that authentic spoonful of Nutella taste, with tiny chocolate chips throughout. The banana was the sweet but mild banana flavor. The walls were adorned with pictures of pups and humans enjoying Ashley's Ice Cream! Needless to say we could be added to their wall of love! The ice cream was delicious, creamy and plenty of it for us both to enjoy!

Yelp
Ashley's has been a staple since I was a kid. They have a variety of flavors and I always get a variation of chocolate or chocolate chip with chocolate sprinkles. I will stop in any time of year, so glad they are still around no matter what new business pop up.

Yelp
DELICIOUS ice cream near the Yale campus. So many flavors and topping to choose from. Loved this place. Had vegan and sorbet options. Everything was so tasty and somewhat reasonably priced for the area. Old school parlor decor made this a fun stop.
google avatar

Angelynne Z.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream shop by Yale. Dropped by because it was super hot outside and got some of the most amazing ice cream ever. We ordered the coffee Oreo, which the server said was the most popular, and the banana Oreo. Both were really creamy and not too expensive sitting at 5.50 or so for the two scoops.
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
Met one of the partners, Mike, who graciously took the time to answer all our questions. Delicious ice cream that comes from Guilford, CT. small batch local ice cream shop. We'll be back

Yelp
Pumpkin ice cream! I love this time of year. I eat pumpkin ice cream until the season passes.

Miranda G.

Yelp
So many flavors to choose from. Ice cream is great however, I do not like the hot fudge.

Greenwichite2017 G.

Yelp
First, let me say I really really like Ashley's. Due to my diet I have to stay away from regular ice cream, and Ashley's provides frozen yogurt, sherbet, and oatmilk alternatives, which is a huge deal for me. Secondly, I find it hilarious that most of the 1-star reviews are about how "unfriendly" the staff was (just before closing time??) THIS.... is New England. We don't stand at the doorway gushing about how wonderful we think you are. And the "unfriendly tone of voice" is utterly subjective. Ashley's has a great selection of ice cream & alternatives, with a good selection of cones & cup-sizes.
google avatar

Yelp
I've reviewed other Ashley's before. This was one of my better visits. This Ashley's is on a street with Toad's and cool old Yale buildings. The inside is small, but nice. Service was friendly, but efficient. I chose Butterfinger ice cream by sight when I saw it in the case. It had good flavor and ample Butterfinger pieces. My wife gave me a bite of her Sundae with Nutella ice cream and hot fudge. She swears by Ashley''s hot fudge. It is good. Four Stars
google avatar

Savanna M.

Yelp
Pretty delicious! Definitely worth the trip! Sampled a few flavors, the cookies and cream was my favorite. Skip the local pizza! Head straight to Ashley's!
google avatar

Yelp
the new haven ashley's ice cream is such a cute place to go! all the icecream is very reasonably priced, and imo the kid's portion is the perfect single scoop, and still quite generous. you can tell that this place has been very well loved. all the staff is really accommodating and kind, even when the place is packed and there is a line snaking out the door. so many options for non dairy or sugar free people, and they all taste equally good. though many non-dairy icecream options are made with coconut cream and the coconut flavor dominates the other ones, the lemon graham cracker non-dairy icecream tastes just like normal ice cream! the peach sorbet is also a good option, very refreshing. they have so many unique flavors that i wanted to try (like heath bar, butterfingers, and sweet cream), but unfortunately i could only try a few. some highlights of their icecream flavors would definitely have to be all their oreo variety ice creams. coffee oreo, pb oreo, and strawberry oreo are all uniquely delicious and creamy, and you can really taste the quality. i found myself at this location 3+ times during my stay in yale!
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
No cinnamon! Argh! Coffee ice cream is a good fall back. No outdoor seating downtown but still delicious.

Yelp
Ashley's have a wonderful Ice Cream shop. We stopped here last summer from the heat of the sun to cool off, and the flavors blew us away. I ordered a couple scoops of Chocolate and Vanilla Ice cream with sprinkles on it. It was really good. They also had Orange, Rainbow Sherberts I like too. Rocky Road was one of the ones we had too. Nice family looking place. Lots of children and families come here alot. Can't wait to visit again.

May J.

Yelp
I asked for two flavors and the girl was like we can only do one flavor but later a guy came in after and they gave him two flavors

paul l.

Yelp
I felt morally compelled to post my first ever Yelp review after an experience I had at the New Haven location. Ashley's... what is this? This should be an embarrassment to the ice cream industry. I watched the employee show the left cone to another employee, laugh about it, and then hand it to us. Yale students and members of the New Haven community should avoid this location. For 10 dollars, there is much better service and Icecream in the surrounding area. We've cherished this location for a long time, but we will never return.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
I was skeptical of the hype, and after finally visiting, the skepticism remains. Is it still enjoyable? Absolutely - like pizza, I have a wide and forgiving tolerance for most ice creams out there. But if you prefer luxuriously creamy goodness, Arethusa is definitely the local ice cream spot to check out.
google avatar

Abegail A.

Yelp
Ice cream from Ashley's was just the sweet treat I needed on a hot Summer evening. They offer some unique flavors along with your traditional favorites. The nutella chip was smooth, creamy, and came with just the right amount of chocolate chips. On the night I went, they ran out of waffle cones (boo!), so I opted for a single scoop in a cup. If they had waffle cones available, definitely would have also got the mocha oreo.

Yelp
So done with Ashley's. Here are the cliff notes: they do not engage in hygienic practices. About a year and a half ago I noticed this at the Hamden location, but my husband said the NH location was different, so I decided to give it another chance. On a Sunday afternoon 7/24/22, I went there with my cousin from out of town to get ice cream. We walk in and both notice NO ONE is wearing gloves and only 1 employee is wearing a mask. So when it is our turn, I quietly address the young woman and ask her where are her gloves. She *rolls her eyes*, bucks up and says "I mean I wash my hands". Even if you are annoyed with a customer, you NEVER EVER show it to a customer AND it's a fair question - esp in the time of covid. (Who raises these people???) Many ppl didn't even know how to properly wash their hands prior to the pandemic. I don't want your dirty knuckles reaching deep into a bin of ice cream that have previously touched all types of random objects. So forgive me if I don't trust you. There are MANY places in the NH area that serve delicious ice cream, so I'm not tied to Ashley's. Firstly, I am not going to explain or go back and forth with a disrespectful *child* the importance of wearing gloves when handling food. Because it was apparent from her attitude, she already knew it was problematic, hence her defensiveness. Secondly, my cousin and I watched her walking back and forth several times touching random things without washing her hands throughout that entire time. So I chose not to engage - we left and got ice cream elsewhere where they actually wear gloves, have great customer service and have delicious ice cream. If Ashley's had one dedicated person to take money, it would be better, albeit still unhygienic. Even outside of the pandemic, food service professionals are mandated to wear gloves when they are handling food. As a physician with almost 2 decades working in public health (some of that time at the NYCDOH), I am admittedly more sensitive to food safety issues, but more importantly this speaks to a larger issue of why it seems to be so difficult to follow certain practices to keep each other safe. Then people complain about how long it has taken so long for us to get out of this pandemic.

Yelp
I love Ashley's Ice Cream! Cute, no thrills, classic ice cream shop. Have probably been there more than any other place in New Haven. Love the rotating dairy free options!
google avatar

Nancy P.

Yelp
Had a layover in New Haven and decided to grab some ice cream after dinner. This was so delicious. I had the coffee Oreo and it was great. You could tell it was homemade for sure. One point off for not having waffle cones, but a solid 4.5 stars.
google avatar

Corinne B.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for years and I don't think I'll ever be able to stop. One of my favorite ice cream places and I've been to MANY! I love trying new flavors each time but man I will get their whipped cream every time!! Love this place with my whole heart.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Very good ice cream, a little more on the staple/classic side than some other places in the area so good for kids. My best friend raves about their cookie dough, the strawberry wasn't my favorite but I prefer it really smooth with no strawberry chunks so definitely depends on your preference!
google avatar

Annie Y.

Yelp
The ice cream selection is super big! There's some staple and interesting/different flavors to choose from. I got the cookie batter, which is somewhat like vanilla ice cream with cookie dough bits. The cream was very smooth and almost whip-like texture. Highly recommend! One scoop (child size) is about $4. Definitely worth considering if you're in the area!
google avatar

Pam T.

Yelp
Five stars for vegan options! Technically I'd give something more like 4.3 stars but am rounding up because Ashley's is awesome for having non-dairy options (that aren't sorbet!!!). The raspberry coconut non-dairy has lovely coconut based vanilla that is creamy and delicious, and a bomb raspberry swirl. My one HUGE complaint is the coconut shreds! Why?? Which leads me to a rant about non-dairy options: News flash: non-dairy/vegan people don't necessarily want special, new flavors. They want chocolate and vanilla and Oreos, too! Not Hemp Cranberry Raisin Granola. (I'm exaggerating.) The Ashley's in Branford had Mint Oreo non-dairy a while ago, which is way better than the choices last week in New Haven: Lemon Cookie and Raspberry Coconut. Finally, the person working behind the counter was awesome, helped me understand the menu/vegan/non-dairy choices, and even gave me a tip on which one to try first. Thanks! I agree with you up to the coconut shreds, which make me quite sad.
google avatar

Preston M.

Yelp
An icon ice cream shop for more than 35 years, you will be happy and satisfied after l"visiting Ashley's! I am nuts for their mint chocolate chip. A real splurge is the homemade hot fudge, so delicious! Like grandmas gravy, that good! I am old and dint go for toppings but kids love them. Note, soft ice cream and frozen Yogurt are offered too! Stored in New Haven, Hamden, Branford and Guilford and Madison!
google avatar

Megana V.

Yelp
Ashley's is a great ice cream spot in new haven! Very close to campus so it's great for students! The ice cream itself is really thick and creamy. Loved the variety of flavors they had! Tried the Oreo coffee as it is one of their most popular flavors and really enjoyed it! The coffee flavor was strong but not overpowering and balanced out the sweetness!
google avatar

Olivia J.

Yelp
I love Ashley's! Been going to different Ashley's locations all over CT my whole life. I am obsessed with their coffee Oreo ice cream. Their coconut ice cream is also a really good one. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
Such a great place and definitely deserving of the praise they get. The interior is bright and well lit with lots of different ice cream flavors and options available. They have an adorable board of doggos eating ice cream on the left wall which was really great. I had a peanut butter oreo and heath bar sundae with caramel sauce and it was super tasty! Pricing was good and the staff was very friendly. Great place and a nice late night treat!
google avatar

Sofia D.

Yelp
Who doesn't love ice cream. I always go for the blueberry flavor when I'm a NE Cute little ice cream shop
google avatar

Garima G.

Yelp
I tried their brownie ice cream and it was delicious! They have various toppings and ice cream flavors. It was creamy.

Liv D.

Yelp
This ice cream is actually delectable. Their bittersweet chocolate is my absolute favorite and their whipped cream....don't get me started on the whipped cream. I think it's the best whipped cream I have ever had in my life....(I'm serious). 10/10 would recommend. 4.6/5 stars for me!
google avatar

Debra G.

Yelp
Best coffee ice cream I'd ever had! So creamy and rich and not too sweet. Nice dark roast coffee flavor too. I thought the price for the serving size was very reasonable. I will definitely be going back for more.
google avatar

Caroline O.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed this scoop. There were so many tempting flavors that it was hard to pick, but I wound up going with the peanut butter Oreo - a solid choice. The texture was creamy and had plenty of chunky bits of Oreo. The peanut butter wasn't overpowering or overly rich, but not light on the flavor. Next time I'm in CT, I'd definitely come back, especially to check out some of the many other flavors I was eyeing.
google avatar

Sho R.

Yelp
This is a good ice cream place in New Haven. The best is Arethusa Farms and this one comes next. I went with a 3 scoop sundae. Coffee oreo was the best. Blueberry was good too. Swiss vanilla almond was ok. Price was reasonable. The fact that you can add 3 toppings to a sundae was good.

Ali N.

Yelp
Ashley's is our go-to for ice cream in New Haven. Good quality ice cream, nice ambiance, friendly staff. Some flavors are better than others. Our favorites include chocolate chocolate chip, butter crunch, and Nutella chip. It is a popular place; there is often a line on Saturday nights.
google avatar

Maddie D.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh ice cream. Love the unique flavors.
