Austin Restaurant Reviews: Asia Market’s Asia Cafe | Eater Austin

"I found a “sparkling” renovated space and an “expansive” menu at Asia Market in North Austin; as a fan of the original 2004 iteration, I visited under the new ownership of Jenny Chen (daughter of founder Tina Chen) and Eric Yi and found the restaurant reinvigorated. You can still find Szechuan-inspired dishes — a bowl of thin, rippled beef swimming in a scarlet broth tingly with red chili oil, dotted with sesame seeds and draped with floral cilantro; a spicy soup filled with springy housemade noodles and hunks of beef shanks whose hefty size is belied by supple tenderness; and a dish of wok-fried pork intestine popped with peanuts and colored with numbing peppers. I also enjoyed the house-made dumplings (also available frozen in the market section) and discovered that even seemingly mundane dishes offer surprises, praising the deceptively complex pan-fried radish cake and egg rolls made with taro. Though the menu may be less traditional than it once was, I recommend repeat visits to try it all." - Erin Russell

Google
I love this Asian grocery store, both for the selection of hard-to-find ingredients, and for the cullinary knowledge (and willingness to talk about it) of the employees. I get all my kaffir lime leaves here (an important ingredient in many Thai dishes). I also get my culantro leaves here, which is more of a Caribbean ingredient for sofrito sauce than Asian, but I find it here.

Google
I like buying my fish from this store. They have pretty big Tilapia fish. Fresh vegetables are available on their weekly market days. Other processed canned foods are available too. The store attendance is very polite.

Google
A wide selection from many asian countries and their staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Some items can be a bit pricey, but that’s to be expected, considering the tariffs. Availability varies based on products and seasons, but we always find something we’re looking for.

Google
It was great it has a lot for being a littler store, it didn’t have enoki mushrooms from what I saw but had a lot of mushrooms Simalir to it, the employees are nice, I got rice cakes, definitely go show this store some love!

Google
Always stop here if we get the chance to in Boise. Pretty good selection of Asian products imported from different countries. Prices aren’t that bad compared to other Asian stores I’ve been to.

Google
Not a fancy place, but lots of good products. The lady was very nice and friendly and helped me with details on certain products. Thank you again; I will be back.

Google
They got snacks from Japan, rice noodles from Taiwan, over-the-counter Chinese medicine from Hong Kong, and all kinds of food products from East and Southeast Asia. I even found a whole roast duck in the refrigerator. I was told to come on Friday morning at around 8 when their weekly shipment arrives from California with fresh produce, seafood, and deli. And if you need to pre-order something, call the store to speak with Lesley on Monday morning.

Google
I have been looking for a place like this!!!! It had all my favorite drinks and snacks. Also I was warmly welcomed as i entered. The gentleman that was running the cash register was super nice. I'm definitely going again!

Yelp
Friendly and clean. Always find what I need. I make curry dishes and South American dishes that share some ingredients. Always have what I need. Try them out.

Yelp
This made the other Asian market in Boise look so much better that I'm gonna have to revise my review. I went early on a Saturday which clearly wasn't the right move- but even so- I didn't see enough items to make me want to come back. I get it- it Idaho and not SoCal- BUT- when Winco has more of a selection- there's an issue. The cashier was friendly (especially compared to the other guy stocking shelves) but I have zero desire to come back. Save yourselves the time unless it's a magical Friday like they mention below- but even then- Winco still might have them beat-

Yelp
So many things you can't find anywhere else in the city! It was like being in Vancouver Canada again. Love love love. As a side note, they only have fresh fruit and veggies on fridays so wait until then to get produce!

Yelp
Didn't see too many recent reviews, so here's my take. I'm Japanese and I had access to 5-star markets in Los Angeles and Orange County. So, my expectations are kind of high. Had to lower them after moving here, because I know there is not a large Asian population in this area. If anything, that tells me I gotta git up off my duff and learn how to cook more Asian dishes. This is a small market and has sparse shelving and areas. Produce is unmarked, so I have no idea what is what. I am at 2 stars at this point. The main reason I gave this market 3 stars is because I discovered a pink pastry box in the freezer and found . . . baked Char Siu Bao! Asked the cashier about it and turns out they have it shipped from San Franscisco every Friday. Yahoo! I bought the entire box. I know, not fair to those who come after me, but snooze you lose. There were only 6 buns in the box. Cut me some slack. Just know, if you see me there on a Friday and that pastry box is there, I'll go after that box like a Christmas shopper on Christmas Eve and the store is closing. You get the idea. Keep it frozen at home and it'll last a while. If you buy it, make sure to mention it to the cashier that you are interested in more. I'm working on seeing if they will vary their dim sum selection. Meanwhile, searching for a great dim sum place. Note: They have a sister market in Nampa, Asian Grocery (on Caldwell Blvd., in Nampa). This store is newer and better supplied. Their green tea selection is one of the best I've seen. Just know, they do not sell Char Siu Bao.

Yelp
hi this message from your email is from you is going through your account number now on Facebook about the account and how it was to

Yelp
I keep my singles in a separate little wallet so they don't get mixed up with the 20s etc., and I lost my old one a year ago. Today I was in the Asia Market and the guy at the checkout pulled it out from behind the counter and said 'Sir, you left this last time you were here'! Doesn't that make you think they care about their customers?
google avatar

Yelp
Best customer service from you get guy! He was so friendly and helped us find exactly what we needed for our soup! Thank you!

Yelp
One of many Asian markets where I can find ingredients to make dishes I grew up with.

Yelp
WARNINGS !!!!! RACIST: I went into this Asia Market and I wasn't impressed, the store was pretty dingy . I bought a few stuff headed out to the cashier , I asked her (the cashier) how much is the pack of fish ? The cashier knew that I was not filipinos. she replied to me in a rude manner as she was talking on the phone with her friends in Tagalog, she told her friend that I'm cheap, how do I know this because I understand a little bit Tagalog. Such a rude Filipino lady. I guess she doesn't need my business. I went to TradeViet another Asian grocery store, it's huge. And also so many items there. They carry fresh vegetables, shrimp, all kinds of seasonings, soy sauce, sweet-and-sour sauce, etc...
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Good selection of Asian foods. Just about anything you would want. Not as many fresh produce items as the Oriental Market on Emerald has on Saturdays, however. Asia Market usually has a better selection of fresh lemongrass.
google avatar

Yulia N.

Yelp
I come here often, about once a week to buy all my Asian cooking ingredients. They have fresh produce, bakery & fruit every Friday morning. Come early otherwise they're all gone! U can also order something if you can't find the stuff that U need, just bring the wrapper. My kids don't mind when I drag them here since they can pick any "Asian drinks" that they want to try. We'll be back!

Yelp
I have such a Interest this culture of food for over a year and half now I love this store it was a great find and they have fresh produce very highly recommended

Yelp
The market itself is small but has lots of Asian food /supplies , including Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. I am quite surprised by the varieties of items they carry, and I am glad to find this little gem in town. It also offer some Asian groceries on Fridays, fish, veggies, meat and some Asian bakeries. Parking can be a bit tricky. The store has its own lot on the main street, and the lot is small. Need to pay extra attention or you may miss it.

Yelp
Since my first visit over 2 years ago, we went back yesterday and I would say things have gone downhill since then. First, there was no A/C inside and it was like being in Hong Kong in the summer inside. They must be trying to save $$ by not running it or getting it repaired? The store looks considerable less well stocked then when we first visited it. Several products I was looking for and found before are no longer carried. Their freezers have prodcts inside that you can not tell what they are. Example: Fish: what type, is it salted, when was it stocked? I would be very leery about buying anything from their freezers. Having just come from Diana's, the Korean Asian Market down the road, this market is dirty and unorganized in comparison. Diana's is smaller, but neat and clean. The freezers are adequately marked as to the product and the style. Their frozen meats are attractive and labeled. Things have really gone downhill in Boise as to Asian Markets in the last 2 years. We would kill for a 99 Ranch type asian market in Boise. Dream on, I suppose.

Yelp
So thankful we have this store in Boise! It feels like home when you find Philippine products, brands, food & vegetables that you can buy. We know the owner of this business & they are such amazing people especially Domeng, he gives me discounts every now & then, very helpful (he's a Filipino btw)! I usually come & shop on Friday mornings where they get the fresh veggies/meats transported straight from California. You really need to come early or it will be gone by noon. It's nice sometimes too that I can call & reserve some stuff that I need & will just pick it up (maybe I'm just special lol) in the afternoon. It's not super big store but they pretty much have everything an Asian needs. The parking space is limited, good thing people come & go fast. I haven't experienced not being able to park.

Jessica Q.

Yelp
Great store! Great products! Super friendly staff! People complain about lack of products but what do you expect, it's Idaho. You will not be getting the same surplus of products like you do in Los Angeles or Orange County. We are in a location where we don't get mass consumption of Asian foods just be happy we have stores that sell Asian products.

Yelp
Lots of produce, sometimes homemade kimchee, sometimes not, many varieties of tea - but this place has the largest selection of goods from pots and pans and cups to everyday wear. Since this location is on Fairview I don't get there very much, but if I lived in the area I would go more often. This is the only place I can regularly find curry leaves.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like to cook (and do more than mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese) this is is a store you must visit. You can find all sorts of things here that, while available at a local grocery store, are much more affordable than elsewhere. In addition to being wallet-friendly, this place is chock-full of specialty items. Some items I have found here for great prices (or that I couldn't find elsewhere) include: Star Anise, Pho boullion cubes, pink salt, lemongrass, Chinese broccoli, saffron, rice seasoning, sesame seeds, hot chili oil, green curry paste, etc. The owners are very friendly and always willing to help you find something or just chat about what you're planning on making. I was picking up supplies for Pho recently and the owner (I presume) noticed which ingredients I was purchasing and was excited that I was going to be making Pho. I have also had the owner's son do my check-out and he is very polite, quick, and efficient. Not only do they have dry goods, sauces, and cookware, there is a section on the East side of the store with refrigerated produce and frozen goods. I love coming here to do shopping and am in at least twice a month. I very highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I'm half-Japanese and have been coming to this store since I was a little kid! We always come for our basic ingredients for curry, ma po tofu, pho, etc...needless to say, they have a wide variety (by Boise standards) of items they carry for all different types of Asian cuisine. The owners have been here for years! This store is my go-to for Asian ingredients and snacks.
google avatar

Lance M.

Yelp
Locally owned family operated Asian market? Yes!! This place carries all the basic Asian sauces and ingredients. The place is pretty bare bones but they are saving money. The pho is good too.

Yelp
As with all the other Asian markets here, I need to preface that this is a "four-stars for Boise" grade but would be lower if it was in a larger city with a more established Asian population and larger Asian markets. I need to travel to three different Asian markets to get all of the supplies I need, which are primarily Japanese in nature. And while Orient Market used to be one of my mainstays, their inability to keep in stock items that I purchased has gravitated me towards Asia on a full-time basis, where this has never been a major issue for me. Asia also tends to be slightly cheaper as well. There are some spicy Japanese noodles that Orient claimed they couldn't get (even though they had all of the other varieties from the same brand). How come Asia always has it then? It's little things like that that make me want to come here instead. They probably have the most Japanese items of any market here now, though comparatively speaking to bigger cities it's still a drop in the hat. But it's appreciated when I can purchase things here instead of having to order them online or bring them back in my luggage from trips to L.A. The building is pretty rundown (Orient has the distinct advantage there because it looks more like an actual market with the lighting and shelving), and the lack of good ventilation can make the air thick and stale. But selection is the most important aspect, and that's what is making them stand out. The shelves stay stocked. Friday is the busy day here when all of the fresh produce, fish, etc. arrive. I've never come on a Friday morning but was told by a co-worker it can be quite a madhouse like Orient Market is on Saturday mornings.

Yelp
Very good selection of produce and protein. They also have local made kim chi that is pretty dang good!
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
Eh...the selection is okay, probably the best in Boise but not very good in the scheme of things (the Boise Asian market scene SUCKS). The service is not always so good. For example, I was searching for grated cassava in the area. I called asking about its availability. The lady on the phone tells me to just come in and look myself. Right, I'd LOVE to waste my gas driving across town if you don't have it.
google avatar

Jamie W.

Yelp
I love this place! They have a good selection and I was super happy to be able to find the things I wanted. I was pretty impressed with this place since it is in Boise but I plan to return many many times from now on. I bought a grass jelly drink, ramune, agar powder (I love making coffee jelly), inarizushi, mochi, nori, ochazuke mix, several jelly pudding mixes and prolly would have bought a lot more if I could. I think their prices are fair and the kid who works the register is nice and friendly. Wish he was my age, lol. Everything I tried tasted delicious! I got a mochi sampler and the black sesame mochi is so wonderful! I think they do a good job of being a general Asian store and that you can find almost anything.

Yelp
I'm glad we have this market in the area. I went with a long grocery list of things I needed, and they had all but taro. They did have large taro, but they were soft and too pitted. Lots of Asian things, including panang paste, mung bean noodles, many types of coconut milk & cream, teas, lau lau, canned corned beef from australia, some products from the Phillipines, soy sauce, and frozen seafood, plenty of bagged treats from overseas, etc.

Rajesh S.

Yelp
This store price is very high. Their mark up for some items are more than 100%. I bought asian noodle 1 box for 15. I buy it regularly, but I checked other stores and they have it for 50 % less than their price. What a rip off.
google avatar

Mary W.

Yelp
Come here on Friday mornings if you want to actually do grocery shopping, otherwise it is just a cool place to look at stuff and kill time. But as my diet consists heavily of raw vegetables and snacks, I find their selection of Friday mornings killer and super cheap. Saw the same stuff at the co-op and laughed at the white people prices. Small selection, crowded, but what I need

Claire D.

Yelp
Excellent little market - they had everything I went in for. Great selection of fresh veggies - ginger, bok choy, etc. Also lots of frozen fish including eel which I haven't been able to find except online as well as soy and coconut milk for much less than the larger grocery stores. If you head to the back, there's a wall of perfumes and soaps, tea pots, dishes, and other housewares too. The gentleman working the counter was very friendly and helped me find a few items I needed. It's certainly going to be one of my regulars!

Yelp
I like this store Asian Grocery in Nampa. They call the 3rd branch is ASIA MARKET 3. The owner is friendly and also the cashiers. I never had experience until I found bugs in my first bag of PREPARED ONION. When I complaint to the cashier today she gave me replacement a new and unopened bag of prepared onion from JHC (Jack Hua Company) product of Thailand. And I worry about same bugs in the dried onions and I checked and looked carefully in the bag, and guess what I saw...worse. It is a crawling worms a lot. I bet those worms are changing stage before become bugs. I will show the unopened onion bag to the owner of Asia Market 3 if he is there on next week.

Yelp
Clean inside, helpful staff, spoke English. Great selection for pad Thai ingredients with amazing prices.

Noneof Y.

Yelp
One of the best Asian grocery stores around - they have a large selection and friendly people to help you.
