Midwestern Shoppers Drive Hundreds of Miles for Ethnic Grocery Stores | Eater

"A sprawling 20,000-square-foot megamart in Fargo run by a brother-and-sister duo from Vietnam that serves the city’s growing Asian American community. It functions as a regional hub where families who once had to drive hours for ingredients can now find a wide selection of Asian and American staples, helping preserve culinary traditions and introduce international ingredients to a broader local audience." - Trisha Gopal

Google
This is an interesting grocery store. I have a couple of Asian recipes I was buying ingredients for and was able to find most items here. There are lots of foods I’ve never seen before and foods you have to know the language to identify. I think in the US we’ve phased out certain additives like MSG that you will find in items in this store. I make my own soy milk and can buy organic soy beans here instead of ordering them from Amazon. Really happy went got this store in ND!

I've been to A and A Market a many times now, and I'm consistently disappointed with the cashier service. It seems like they're always on their phones and barely acknowledge customers. A simple 'hi' or 'thank you' would make a big difference, but it's never happened. It's frustrating when you're trying to support a local business but don't even get basic courtesy in return. Hopefully, management will address this issue and improve customer interactions.

Faraway from my home , almost 9000 miles . I can spend forever in one of these doors and never ever lose interest in the Asian Supermarket . These new location grocery stores do not only offer you top notch Asian products when it comes to food and cooking utensils, but they also offer you lots of choices for your snacks , It is not just China products that they offer, but also Vietnam , Japanese, Thai, Indian and African . The choices are endless and the selection quality are fantastic. Make sure to come after you get payroll 😉

Best Asian and Other Ethnic Grocery in ND! Really love this Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Filipino, Halal, African & Caribbean + Market! Having been spoiled with the plethora of great ethnic groceries in NYC, CA, and NJ, I didn’t expect a lot from a grocery in Fargo North Dakota. But you will see for yourself that you can get so many fresh goodies from all over the world in this one special place. Prices are very reasonable. The owner is very friendly and nice. It’s clean … without that old food, dried and preserved odor, smell of old meat ethnic store … because some store are not clean. And the spices and overwhelm you with all kinds of smells mixed with dust. But this grocery takes very good care to have strong lighting to see what you need, has updated fresh items, doesn’t have the unsightly meat rack of pig heads and feet (I can’t look at slaughtered animals not only bc I’m mostly vegetarian but bc it just looks scary to me and not appetizing), and has so many great brands and foods from different nations. There were 5 Chocó Pie flavors (Korean marshmallow pie). But I also found a gem I can’t find anywhere … After Eight Mints! It was so amazing and I had to buy it! I also bought Indian food, Korean ramen, Filipino Turón (which is a plátano w filó dough like wrap with honey or other sauce) impossible to find in most cities unless it’s one w a high concentration of Filipinos), halal chocolate…etc. I stock up when I’m here because it’s a distance for me but I am very happy going here.

Google
This place deserves 5 stars. I really love how everything is set up and how everything is easy to find. I also love the drinks they have there.

Google
They had literally everything loved it. The only con was that I bought some Sindhav salt, and it expired in 2021

Yelp
Very good! Even better after they opened the bigger location. Everything is fresh. All the African & Carribean brands & ingredients you need is here. Thank God for this place bc Fargo is so small & you think the area doesn't have anything like this place but it does. Keep doing your thing guys!

Yelp
Always has the goodies I need in stock when I visit and the people are friendly. Their variety of good spans many different types of markets which makes every visit interesting and fun. Nice job!

Yelp
The market has a lot of option at decent prices. Many different types of sauces, instant ramen, snacks, meat, and fruit to choose from. Easily spent $30 first visit on many goodies. Clean and respectful. Careful if you walk there. Better to drive. Transit is okay but the sidewalks around the area can be narrow.

Yelp
It's hard to get good Asian groceries in the mid west. I live in rural Minnesota, but this market is an hour and a half away from out town. They have everything you need here for amazing Asian food. Loads of ramen, eel, fresh veggies, sauces, mushrooms.... Everything! Definitely going back with a cooler next time!!!

Yelp
I was very disappointed with my customer experience today. I have been a customer at this store in the old and current new location for over a decade. I noticed often goods are on the shelves near or sometimes even beyond their expiration date and produce starting to go bad. Not uncommonly the expiration date is missing or not clearly marked. I usually avoid and try to be cautious in my selection and don't make a fuss. Bought a small bag of bean sprouts for $1.50 less than 24 hrs ago along with couple other more expensive items. Was in a hurry. Noticed after returning home bean sprouts going bad with some liquid collecting on bottom of plastic bag. Went back to shop today and thought to bring this up with CS since there anyway. I have never used CS or dealt with the owner other than say hello over the many years until today. Owner say I was at CS counter, first in line, waiting 15 minutes patiently for him to find time. Told him the problem and he immediately and without any care said "it is your responsibility to make sure the stuff you by is not spoiled". I suggest it was his responsibility as store owner/manager to offer food safe for purchase and consumption, ideally with clear best by dates. He denied this responsibility multiple times or acknowledge my concerns as a customer. I think other customers should know about my experience and how I was treated today. I will be taking my business elsewhere. Even Lotus Blossom just a few blocks away, offer a 24 hr produce return policy (I just noticed this sign on the door as I went there to shop afterwards). What would public health and food safety inspectors say?

Yelp
This is probably the only asian market around, I find most things I need here just fine. occasional fresh fruits and the basic asian essentials.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this store. Great produce, tons of spices and sauces, huge freezer section. The costumer service is excellent- never been and have no idea what to start with? Just ask! I highly recommend grabbing a fun flavor of Kit Kat while you're there :)

Yelp
Food is awesome, people as helpful as they can be with a language barrier. Ambiance.. just a store. Packed with stuff though.

Yelp
Been shopping here for the last seven years, and this review is long overdue. I've shopped at a few of the ethnic food stores around Fargo, but always seem to go back to this store. Great selection and at great prices. Half the store is dedicated to South Asian groceries, while the other space is allocated to other Asian delicacies. Owners are super friendly and always willing to help find anything you need around the store. This place is perfect for all of your Asian grocery needs!

Yelp
I went to buy some Japanese items. Decent Natto selections. Huge selection of seaweeds. Fresh veggies and sushi rice and snacks. I got everything I wanted buy on one trip!

Yelp
Not bad, for a place like Fargo to have a small Asian supermarket that stocks all the basic canned and dry goods, and has some selection of fresh meat and vegetables that aren't normally available here. The fish, as a note, is a bit dried. Lot is one-direction, though, from the East to the West in terms of entry and parking spaces.

Yelp
Great place to go and get some very specific items and some new and exciting ones. They are so nice and helpful

Yelp
They have what one can expect from an Asian market. Prices are reasonable. The area has a slightly dilapidated feel, but the store seems quite busy. Also quite ideally located in downtown. Not sure why the name has 'American' though.

Yelp
I like this place for the variety of stuff they carry but the smell is something else. If you're not used to Asian smelling stores just prepare yourself. We don't mind it because almost every Asian store we've shopped at has this smell and that's from us traveling to other countries too. It's just a strong fishy smell which is to be expected since well they sell seafood items. Aside from that the usually have most of the things we want you can't find anywhere else in town. It's pretty diverse on the items they sell. So yeah it's a good place to shop just a heads up on the fishy smell

Yelp
Best Asian Market I have been to in town so far. They carry a lot of stuff that is not available elsewhere in town and they also have a large variety of unique produce and offal meats for cooking. Prices are affordable as well. Great for if you cannot find tough ingredients or are looking to stock your pantry. My family all love it.

Yelp
Great grocery stores with wide selections at reasonable prices (much header compared if buying online). They have a decent Japanese and Thai ingredients section which I love. Friendly staff and you also get a discount paying cash which is even better.

Yelp
One of the best Asian store in North Dakota I've been coming here for a couple of years I like this store for Indian Groceries and fresh vegetables. They have very good collection of Asian foods. The store owner is very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Not too bad for being in Fargo. Coming from California where the Asian markets are typically as big or bigger than your usual Albertson's or Hornbachers, this market was a complete down grade for me. However, although there is not much varieties to chose from, they do carry the essentials and, at this point, that's all I can ask for.

Yelp
Wonderful selection of food. If you eat any amount of Eastern style food, you should stock up here because the prices are way better for the same or similar products than the prices are at other grocery stores. For example, I paid $5 less for saffron at Asian American Market than I did at Cashwise. Wide variety of tea, spices, rice, noodles (I like the yellow Chinese noodles), and I haven't found vegetarian steamed buns or vegetarian gyoza anywhere else. Granted, I haven't gone to other ethnic food markets, but I haven't really felt the need to since everything I like is at Asian American Market. They accept cards if the amount of the purchase is over a certain amount. I don't remember the exact minimum amount for a card purchse, but I want to say it's like $3.50. Inside smells kinda odd. I'm guessing it's because of the fish laying out on top of ice. I'm not a fan of fish in general, so maybe others wouldn't notice the smell. Would be nice if they had a bicycle rack. Car parking is kinda weird, you can only enter from one side if you intend to park. I don't mind these minor inconveniences because my emphasis is on food and prices.

Yelp
I like this market, its very clean and nice , the owner very friendly too and the stuff very cheap!!! I love it!

Yelp
Fantastic store! Had everything I was looking for and more. Glad I found it. Only negative is the parking lot requires some caution as it is small and difficult to get in and out.

Yelp
Going here is an experience. Great produce, great selections, and inexpensive prices. 5% discount on cash payments! Plus they have tasty ginger candy for like 1/4 of the price on Amazon.

Yelp
Awesome store! I've been in the Fargo area for 17 years and have been a loyal customer of this store since the 90's. I buy most of my pantry staples there as they are slightly cheaper than the big box stores. They stock many different kinds of rice including red and black rice. If you're looking for great deals on spices this is the place to shop! If you're a health nut like me, you'll find all your sea vegetables and not have to spend an arm and a leg... and if you look hard enough you will find goji berries for less than half that of the health food stores. They also stock many different types of organ meats that you won't find in the supermarket as well as great deals on produce. My kids love to come to the AAM to get a snack and a drink. They love to tell their friends they had birds nest juice or ate rice candy with the wrapper on it. I had to give it 4 stars only because they can make some improvements with their frozen meats. Often it is mixed together and frosty so that you can't tell what is what. Improvements in packaging and labeling would help.

Yelp
As an Asian American, I have to say this is the real deal. If you are serious about cooking with an Asian flair, you have to come to this store. Since I grew up new NYC, this place is far from shocking. They have a very nice selection of products from Bagoong ( a nice paste made from shrimp that is amazing with sauteed string beans, salty and not for the faint of heart) to frozen Siopao ( Steamed buns filled with an Asian sweet flavor and meat, best if reheated through a steamer). Be adventurous, and live outside the box.

Yelp
The best place in town to go to for Indian subcontinent groceries. The other half of the store is devoted to Chinese and other groceries of the orient. They have everything from fresh vegetables to a wide variety of frozen foods to spices, rice, beans, etc. They give you a discount if you pay in cash. Good place to go if you're a vegetarian or vegan, as they have the best prices in town on tofu products. The large bags of rice (a large variety) make for one of the most economical places in town to buy rice.

Yelp
I was a very regular customer at their store. Recently I had a terrible chemical reaction from using Dabur Amla hair oil from their store. When I told them about the reactions i had from this product and I want to investigate the root cause so that no one else suffers like me, i got very poor support from them. The person did not say even sorry to me. He kept on saying ok..ok..as if it is nothing. Then he told me that he does not have time to call me to give me the information. I need to call him. I asked him to check when it was purchased. He told me he can't give me that info either. I was very shocked with his behavior and told him if he does not help I will call bbb..then he told me I can do whatever I want to. He has other customers to serve.. All I wanted is his compassion so that other people don't suffer like me.. I ended up going to emergency and I am in high dose steroid now. But it did not matter to him at all. Shame on him. He is the owner of the store.

Yelp
Nice Store, Beware of the Packed Fresh produce... Sell by May 30th, still on shelfves the next day. Nice selection of everything else. The cashier was eager to see if Longans would be their the next day, by phoning her boss. Overall nice store.

Yelp
This place is incredible it has it all from groceries to junk food to weird beverages to appliances and chop sticks. If your not used to foreign markets you might feel awkward but give it a chance and I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised
