Growing up in Detroit, I have eaten at what I believe to be the orginal location on Schoolcraft as a teen. I remember craving an occasional sandwich from there. It's a different taste than one would get eating an authentic deli style corned beef sandwich.
Anyway, the same location began making corned beef egg rolls; and seemingly became so popular that more locations, including this one have popped up around the city. I'd tried the fried rolls elsewhere and enjoyed them, so I gave these a try. They were great at the Schoolcraft location.
This location is closer to me, so I ventured in. The space, in a strip of businesses, is tiny with a carryout counter and a few seats in the waiting area. On my first visit, I noticed that the food wasn't as good as what I had remembered, but it wasn't so bad that I wouldn't try it again. The second time I stopped by, the tiny place was filled with a smokey smell, the oil they were cooking in was burnt, therefore the taste of the good was compromised. Also, the quality of the meat seemed cheap; and the rolls seemed to be smaller as well.
None of this stops their usual clientele from patronizing in a steady flow. There's a crowd each time I drive by.
Speaking of the customers, although it's of no fault to the owners or staff...their customers put the nail in the coffin for me.
The place has utterly wrecked of marijuana each time I've been there.
I was craving corned beef rolls yesterday, and unfortunately the coney island was out of them. I drove close to Asian and noticed that the tiny waiting room was empty.
I decided to try it once more. I ordered a new menu item, french fries with cheese sauce and corned beef. The idea is a good one, a salty cheesy snack, ideal for a cheat day. Unfortunately, it's poorly executed. The fries were cold, the meat seemed to be scrap pieces and the cheese sauce, clearly isn't made with real cheese. The food was cold because it had been sitting there and the person at the counter failed to inform me that it was ready.
I'll leave this place to those who love it.
