The Hottest New Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul Right Now, November 2024

"Wife and husband duo Mary Slater and Tenzin Dechen have opened a snug new Lao cafe in the former Official Fried Chicken space on Minnehaha Avenue, right at the base of the MN46 apartment building. They’re serving everything from lemongrass pork banh mi to bright papaya shrimp salads, curries, steamed and fried dumplings, larb, Lau sausage platters, and fragrant pho. There are a few small counters assembled in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows for dining in; or place an order online for pick-up or delivery." - Eater Staff

I really wasn’t sure what authentic Laotian cuisine involved and tasted like, but I was very pleased with the food that I purchased. My goal was to have a healthy dinner and one that tasted good. I’ve learned a bit more about sticky rice, but what I really enjoy are the resh, aromatic herbs and vegetables. I recommend the fresh spring rolls with shrimp and Cucumber Salad or Nam Khao Salad. Each one comes with a dipping sauce. Mine had a generous amount of crushed peanuts in the sauces. The Dumplings and Pork Skewers look fantastic and I plan to try them next time. Several people were picking up orders of curry, so I assume that they must be a popular dish here. Take a look at my picture of the spring rolls; they are elegant with the shrimp being colorful and in row. The staff were about to close by the time I found the restaurant and parked, but they were friendly people and had no problem preparing my food in the last 15 minutes of being open. I like how you can do take out, order and pick up, or dine in at one of the tables near the front window. They interior reflects their culture and has a nice cheerful décor. Parking can be a bit of a challenge as it is right on a busy corner.

The food was delicious, and the location is only a couple blocks from Minnehaha Falls so a great place to stop before/after. We got there right at opening so there wasn’t any wait for a table, but within a half hour they already had plenty of customers. Pricing is great for the portion sizes, I was only able to eat half my food and took the rest home. The owners are super sweet people, you can tell they serve with love and passion for their customers. We also had the Thai drink and it was super good, a tasty sweet treat! Definitely recommend!

We ordered the mango smoothie, pad Thai, some fried rice, some salad and a sandwich. I can't remember the names. They were all delicious meals. The space was small though. The service was good, the lady at the counter was friendly and gave great recommendations

Google
The nam khao was absolutely delicious — perfectly crispy with that addictive crunch in every bite, balanced by fresh herbs and bold seasoning. Easily one of the best I’ve had! The drunken khao piek noodles were just as outstanding. The noodles had the perfect chewy texture, packed with bold, flavorful spices that made every bite comforting yet exciting. To top it off, the Thai tea was so refreshing — smooth, delicious, and not overly sweet or overpowering. It paired perfectly with the meal and was the perfect finish.

It was our anniversary and we decided to get pho and try it from someplace we had never been. I wish this place had more seating but that can't be helped so we got to go. So, this place has the best pho broth I have ever had. Let's just get that out of the way. It was rich, dark and fatty(in a good way!) We also go the wantons which had a wonderful filling ratio for triangle shape. The fresh spring rolls were great and a great size with a tasty sauce. Got a pork ban mi and it was so flavorful. One complaint would be I wish the jalapeños were thinner sliced or julienned. Did get ricked a bit my the peppers. To be fair we are in pepper season so they will be spicy. Also got the Thai fried rice. So good! I feel like some places have fried rice for basic people and kids. We have kids. But it was very good! Can't wait to go back and try everything else.

This might be a little place but its got BIG flavor! We had the Lao Sausage with fried rice, and Lao Sausage is always good with a little kick off spice but that rice was super tasty even without the sausage😍😋 The red curry and Thai ice tea was perfect. Finally we strongly recommend the cranberry wontons!! Yummm

The staff puts their heart and soul in every dish which truly shows. I recommend pushing your spice limits with their Thai spicy. 11/10

A Hidden Gem with Heart! We visited Asian Duck Cafe coming from a smaller-town, and the moment we walked in, they made us feel like family in the big city. From the start, the staff went above and beyond — taking the time to make us comfortable, walking us through the menu in detail, and making sure we understood everything we were ordering. We had their mango smoothie, and wow… hands down one of the best we’ve ever had. The mango tasted real — fresh, natural, and vibrant — none of that artificial stuff. To top it off, they gave extra smoothie for our sweet young daughters, which absolutely made their day. The entire experience had the kind of care where they make sure you leave full, happy, and smiling. Genuine warmth, amazing service, and delicious food… what more can you ask for? If you’re in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by. Asian Duck Cafe is more than a meal — it’s an experience filled with love. ❤️

Yelp
This review is just for the banh mi sandwiches & spring rolls. Everything I tried was just ok. I ordered the chicken banh mi & beef ones. The chicken banh mi was far better. The meat is covered in a flavorful sauce and you get a small tub of it for takeout, which came in handy for dipping at home. Two things would have made the banh mi better. First would be smaller thinner slices of jalapeño (not the giant long chunk). Second would be adding pickled daikon & carrots in the sandwich. It was basically just meat, jalapeño & cilantro. Bun was decent though. Spring roll was sad. Tiny shrimp & lettuce & carrot. Barely any flavor even with their nuoc cham (fish sauce). Protip is to use the chicken banh mi sauce to add to the spring rolls for flavor. It was easy to order online but it took awhile for a message from the restaurant to confirm the order. I ended up calling them to be sure. The person I talked too & picked up order groom was very friendly & welcoming so props for that. In now looking at other reviews, it looks like I may have just ordered the wrong things. Next time I'll try the curries, pho, wontons & papaya salad!

Yelp
Been here 3/4 times now. Really good Banh Mi sandwiches, excellent fried rice, and interesting cranberry cream cheese wontons. Large portions, watch out for big slices of jalapeño peppers in the sandwiches, they carry some heat. Not sure if they make the bread or purchase it from a good baker. Perfect texture for a Banh Mi sandwich.

Yelp
This place is a gem. On our plates/bowls today were dumplings, papaya salad, pad Thai, and yellow curry. We ordered the dumplings pan-fried, and they were perfect. The papaya salad - a dish I'm particularly picky about - was as fresh as could be and had a citrusy sparkle about it that complemented the crunch of the papaya so well. The yellow curry (tofu) and white rice did not disappoint, and the pad Thai (chicken) was - as my husband would say - gorgeous. The portions were generous and the service great. Quite moderately priced, this is a welcome addition to the neighborhood!

Yelp
A small take out place (a few bar stools for dining in) in the corner of 46th and Minnehaha Ave. plenty of available street parking. Like the food a lot. We have beef sandwich (banh mi) and Thai fried rice.

Yelp
Absolutely great food. I am a big fan of spicy food and they actually can make it spicy! Apart from that, the wontons were perfect, the curry was delicious, and the portions were very generous. More than all of this though, the family that owns and operates it are just the best people. They were kind, friendly, and the kind of people you want to just keep coming back to to give your service. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Food: Excellent, I had the red curry with chicken. Best curry I've had in ages. I also had the shrimp spring rolls. They were OK, but not as good as the curry. Service: The staff were very helpful in describing the dishes and were quite friendly. Ambiance: The restaurant is tiny. Just a few seats along a counter along the window. But most people were getting takeout like me. I'll definitely be going back for more. I'll update the review after trying more of their dishes.

Yelp
Those pumpkin wontons are to die for. Service was quick and staff nice. It's a small takeout place, but clean.

Yelp
Asian Duck has the Yellow Curry Chicken that I've been missing for years! I love it. The Wontons and Fried Rice are also great. Great service and ppl :)

Yelp
We tried a bunch of stuff. Our favorites were the sandwiches, and the sausages, and the spring rolls but the fried rice and curry were good too. We will definitely go back. The owners are super friendly and welcoming!

Yelp
Very tasty food. Yellow curry was amazing. The cranberry cream cheese wantons were good.

Yelp
Food is fantastic! The owners are so nice and you can tell they care about their new space. Ambiance is small but you get the best food! Highly recommend the cranberry wontons, Laos sausage fried rice and Thai Tea! We will be back!

Yelp
Thrilled to have this addition to the neighborhood. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Food is delicious and portions are generous! We ordered the massaman curry with tofu to share. It was more than enough for two and the curry beat out our favorite mpls thai restaurants. The location is small but clean and pleasant for a couple to sit at the counter to eat or to wait while you order take out. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic food, the noodle salad and beef banh mi were awesome, good portions and a great price too. Best takeout place in the neighborhood!

Yelp
This was such a nice little find. Almost nothing good happens on next door, but this was one time somebody suggested something that actually was worth the trip. It is right by my house and I just hadn't noticed it before because it's at the bottom of an apartment complex across the street from the liquor store, but it's really cute inside. Very clean and trendy. Not much seating though. More of a take away spot! Anyways, coming in the owner, I assume was taking orders and she was extremely kind and friendly to everyone coming in leaving and answering the phone. Right off the bat I knew that was a good sign mixed with the extremely good smell of cooking. I got both the fried rice and the wontons and both were incredible. Overall, I wish the wontons came with the dipping sauce. She gave me extra, but whatever the sauce was was like a sweet chili dipping sauce and was also incredible. Definitely stop in!

Yelp
Read about this in our very local neighborhood newsletter, Longfellow Whatever so stopped in to get some take out tonight. Mary, the owner and chef, was so outgoing and happy with the reception the restaurant has received in this neighborhood. It's small, a few counter seats so primarily a take out place. Pretty small menu but makes it easier to try other dishes, which I will do soon. I had the cranberry wontons and the curry fried rice. The chicken was tender and the spice (medium) was perfect. I like spicy but not to the point that you can't taste the flavors. I'm wishing good luck to this new addition to Longfellow!
