Where Philly’s Chinatown Community Leaders Go to Eat

"There was a hole in Philadelphia’s heart when the (literally) underground Asia Supermarket and the beloved subterranean Hong Kong eatery Tasty Place closed in 2020. Asianfresh is one of a few new supermarkets that blossomed in its wake to try to fill that void. Samuel Chueh, the City of Philadelphia’s director of international business and global strategy, finds many popular Asian snacks he’d see in his native Taiwan on the marvelous second floor of this wonderland. The first floor — with its seafood and butcher counter and plentiful produce selection that spills out to the street  — is also very impressive." - Diana Lu

I love this place! It was sad to see my favourite restaurant in Chinatown at the time close down but this market that replaced it is very nice. They have tons of fresh meats, fish, and seafood, but my favourite thing about it is the imported treats. They have snacks from all of Asia like Japanese candy and Thai chips. I try not to tell too many people about this gem but for anyone reading this it's the real deal; Imagine a mini H Mart!

A spacious two story Chinese Grocery Store much like Heng Fa but far more space between the aisles to shop with. If you're tired of brushing against other shoppers at Heng Fa supermarket then this is the place to shop. The old gentleman working upstairs in the aisles are very helpful, just show them what you need on your phone and they will locate it for you. I will visit this place to get my frozen dumplings, chili oils and egg noodles from now on. Fruits outside, greens and vegetables inside along with a huge variety of fresh (live) seafood in tanks! There's an elevator to the second floor too so it's perfect for disabled shoppers too unlike Heng Fa and Asia Supermarket

They have variety of fresh seafood and good price. You can literally buy any kind of seafood here. Their meats and vegetables are very fresh. It can be your one stop grocery shopping here to cook many delicious meals. I come here every time I’m in Chinatown.

I used to buy pork ribs at AsianFresh every weekend. They have a polite and professional young gentleman working at the butcher section. This employee had been diligent in providing excellent service, cutting ribs precisely to customers’ liking, and maintaining a welcoming demeanor. This weekend, I went to the store as per my usual routine, and the polite young man was about to assist me in cutting the ribs. However, another staff member, a middle-aged man, also working in the butcher section, abruptly and rudely interfered. He raised his voice at his colleague for cutting ribs for customers, and then turned to talk impolitely to my friend and me that "WE NEVER CUT RIBS FOR CUSTOMERS." This proclamation was not only shocking but also contrary to the service I have consistently received at your store. My friend and I left without purchasing it at AsianFresh and ordered online from another provider instead. We don’t think we would ever visit AsianFresh every weekend again. If your staff is unwilling and unable to perform basic duties, what’s the point to go to a butcher shop in person? Businesses hire new staff to enhance service quality, but AsianFresh is hiring elder individuals who bully young workers for providing good service to customers. Please take this seriously and stop hiring rude, unprofessional workers. (Ps: The picture is the ribs cut by the young butcher in the past. Now because rude guys are hired into the Butcher section, AsianFresh is now “we never cut ribs for customers”.

Wow 🤩 this place wasn’t around the last time I was in Chinatown which has been a few years and I love this grocery store! They have so many options of different Asian snacks and foods! The downstairs mostly has fresh vegetables and meat while the upstairs has thousands of epic snacks, noodles, frozen foods, and more! This store is definitely worth checking out especially if you are looking for snacks that can be found across China and Asia. I’ve been to China 8 times and was able to find some of favorite Chinese snacks here at Asianfresh Food Market! Yay!!!

Staffs are rude , they treat customers dishonestly, one time I bought a piece of porkbelly, it’s on sale 1.88, but when I got home and opened it , the price was 2.88 per pound, another time I bought a case of persimmon , I paid for 13.99, but when I got home , I couldn’t find it anywhere, they stole my whole case of persimmon.so do you think this is a good place for shopping?

If you don’t speak, Chinese, don’t go here. I waited in line fair and square and someone who spoke Chinese jump right in front of me at the meat section. The butcher looked at me, turned away and ended up helping her first because she spoke Chinese to him. I was running out of time, but waited patiently I had to go pick my kids up after school. That was so ignorant.

Love this place for the sauces, veggies, and meats I need. Plenty crowded usually so be about your space. The cashier's are not enthusiastic and that can come off as super rude, don't expect them to treat you well if you're not the 'target' customer but I'll keep coming back bc hmart has a tendency to upcharge.

Yelp
I love this market. Staff in seafood section is very nice. However at check out during my last visit the chip on my card said error and the cashier shouted. NO MONEY! I transferred money to my Apple Pay because I had money. A little patience was needed at checkout

Yelp
Definitely will be a regular stop when we are in the area. Store was busy but clean. Large selection and very reasonable prices. Just around the corner from reading terminal market

Yelp
Good selection but a COVID nightmare in terms of social distancing. Luckily most people were wearing masks but getting in line to check out most people were like 2 ft apart which can't be helped since it's a small store but heads up on that. Also like another reviewer said there were boxes everywhere making it hard to navigate. You could easily trip into the seafood counter or hundreds of boxes, and I consider myself a pretty small person who can maneuver well and it was tough for me. I went mostly for snacks of which there are a lot on the second floor (stairs are on your left as you walk in). There was a lot of what I'd see in big name supermarkets. Now note... It wasn't as clean as I'm sure it was in the beginning after opening. There were bugs buzzing around and the ceiling kind of dripped on the second floor which was kind of weird and gross. I know bugs are given when doors are wide open etc but I found them even on the second floor so... I got packaged food but if you get anything open air just take note if you're squeamish.

Yelp
Asianfresh opened its door a few months ago and now is the most popular Asian grocery store in Philadelphia Chinatown. The only negative thing about this store is crowdedness, which is similar to most places in Chinatown due to space constraint. Aisles are cleaner and better organized than most Asian markets. They offer fresh Asian fruit & veggies, a decent seafood & meat department, and a wide selection of condiments & snacks upstairs. I have great shopping experience here in the past two months. Arguably the best grocery store in China town as of early 2020. P.S. The long-time establishment, the Asian market at the basement of 11th & race, went out of business shortly after Asianfresh opened. Go figure!

Yelp
The fresh vegetables and produce are good & fresh here. There's a good selection of greens. Also, there's a fair selection of condiments & packaged foods upstairs, a pretty good variety given the relatively small size of the store. I'd definitely return for more groceries.

Yelp
Chaotic, but very new, shiny, and clean. New option in Chinatown grocery shopping. Two levels. Very nice fish selection and fresh meat area. Good selection of pre-sliced hotpot meats and hotpot supplies. Upstairs basic dry goods, sauces, and a well stocked freezer section. Ran into a few things we couldn't find, but nothing crucial. Vegetables were prepacked in plastic in a lot of instances, which meant you had to buy a lot of say, eggplant. Prices very fair. Layout could use a little tidying, lots of obstructions, but clearer than other local options. Checkouts chaotic, need better line structure since they have space for a rope divider. Fish and meat counters a tad inattentive unless you are aggressive, but this is pretty normal. Note selection is mostly Chinese (as expected, it is Chinatown) with a smattering of Japanese and Korean products, other cuisines not very represented despite the sort of pan-Asian naming. Very neat building. And they have an elevator!

Yelp
5/5 for an amazing selection that is quality. It has food from all Asian ethnicities, they have fresh seafood and regularly change over their packages of cuts of meat. They had discounted Moon Cakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival. They also have consistent pricing for chicken thighs, vegetables, regular sale pricing for Apples and oranges, etc. As for cleanliness concerns, I think when you go to an Asian Grocery store, you have to expect a sort of controlled chaos. I will say that it can be hard to social distance, but you know that coming here, everyone will be wearing a mask, multiple cashiers and customers will be wearing face shields, most people will be using gloves and everyone will be rushing to get in and out once they've loaded all the bags they can carry with everything they can to buy all at once. I come here for things like hot pot meats, seafood, chicken, beef, drumsticks, live crabs, different vegetables, soy sauce, etc. Tips/Takeaways: -Love this place for all my weekly grocery needs -Definitely great prices, quick staff, patrons all wear masks/gloves, would highly recommend!

Yelp
A very welcome addition to Chinatown and has probably become my favorite place to shop in Philadelphia. The prices are really good here and the store is clean, has good hours (open til 9pm daily) and has an extensive selection on meats, produce, and anything asian. The store does get crowded and theres always a line for the register but it always moves fast -- I usually go on the weekends and don't think I've ever had to wait over 5-10min. If I had to choose only one grocery store to go to it would be this one -- it really has the best combination of price, freshness, and selection. It has all the asian essentials (boba/mochi ice cream, instant noodles, live seafood, snacks, hotpot ingredients and equipment) as well as rotating sales that make it fun to shop at and see what the deals are for the week!

Yelp
The prices are great which is why I keep coming back. They also have a good variety of Chinese veggies and all types of seafood and meat. However, the staff are increasingly rude and inattentive. I was at the meat counter and the staff there were picking up every rack of pork ribs except the one this small elderly woman was pointing at. They packaged one up even though she was shaking her head and pointing at a different one. She ended up putting it back on the counter and leaving the store very upset. The first few times I went the guys at the meat counter were really nice, but they are getting to be a bit unbearable. Being courteous doesn't cost anything.

Yelp
We come here for most of our Asian grocery needs. Good selection of dry food, sauces, fresh seafood, meat, vegetables and fruit. Prices are on par with other stores nearby. Cashier area setup is a bit chaotic and the place is not the cleanest.

Yelp
Love this market and the varieties that market offers in seafood selections. Didn't like the guy who was trying to pick all the smaller crabs in the option. You truly have to tell him "i want that one, and that one cause he'll definitely give you the smaller ones in the bunch

Yelp
Awesome grocery store. Great prices on seafood (1 dozen blue crabs for $14) and super friendly staff. My favorite grocery store in the city. I come up from South Philly at least once a week.

Yelp
Great place for fresh fruits and vegetables and great selection of groceries, located right around corner from convention center. My new stop in place when in town !

Yelp
This place is always busy since they first open. The vegetables and the fruits are so fresh and the workers are nice!!!They sell duck blood that I usually cooks in hotpot and I can't find it anywhere else.
