15 Exciting Spanish Restaurants in San Francisco and the East Bay - Eater SF

"While not strictly Spanish, this non-traditional tapas spot is very classically the Mission, in the sense that it’s an eclectic, artistic mix of cultures and cuisines. Pull up a seat for affordable drinks including Spanish wines and cocktails, along with classics like gambas, albondigas, and bocadillos — plus Mexican-influenced plates, kebabs, and fusion items. DJ sets often fuel the lively atmosphere." - Caleb Pershan

I was so happy to have accidentally dropped in for the 7$ Happy Hour special of a drink and a nibble so I stayed for the Taco Tuesday special of 2 tacos and a margarita. The vibe was chill, the others around were friendly and the window let in the light while keeping the atmosphere warm. Update: Today, I came for the happy hour wine and snack and stayed for the band. It also had the best GF hamburger in the area. (No picture because I couldn’t wait to dive in! How good was the band? Well even the neighbors decided to bring their own food to the parklet to enjoy the music!

Google
Really nice local joint to check out. The food was great and the bartender and owner were really nice. Good options for non drinkers and vegetarians. Very spacious. Looking forward to coming back for trivia and music. Forgot to take a pic before I was almost done with the food, it was too good to let sit.

Perfect place for a family outing to play games or watch a movie on a huge screen play sports or relaxing with the family or friends

Google
Awesome happy hour! The prices were super friendly and the staff was really knowledgeable. They even had a live jazz band playing. Definitely coming back.

Came for a friend's birthday. Food (preordered) was really delicious especially the vegan sushi - so fresh and juicy-delicious. The team was super attentive, the DJ was on it, the atmosphere was great and there was even a wonderful dancer for a real treat (not sure if that was a one-off but we were spoiled for sure).

Google
I recently had a birthday party at Asiento. The staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating; the food and drinks were delicious, and the seating/environment is super flexible. I'd recommend for anything from a casual hang with a friend to a regular meetup with a group. Great place!

Google
Had my birthday hosted here. The bar owner and stuff were super friendly and supportive, and setting up the party was affordable and smooth. Would highly recommend asiento to anyone looking to have a party or event.

Absolute favorite neighborhood bar! Drinks, food and vibes are always amazing ❤️✨ EDIT: I love Asiento even more now, after we hosted our wedding afterparty here! Debi, the owner, is an absolute rockstar. She was so incredibly helpful throughout our planning process, and genuinely cares about your event and guests. She specifically brought custom meals to guests with dietary restrictions, engaged with our friends, and was so fun and attentive at the same time. This place is such a gem and I’m so grateful to Debi and her team for creating such a wonderful bar. Everyone raved about the cocktails and food! Whether you just want a night out or want to throw a party…Asiento is the best!

Yelp
Asiento nightclub is amazing for events both day and night. I played a gig with Sara and Maculate, who are regular DJs there. when they play the place is packed. Definitely pop in whenever either of em are on the decks! This place has proper food options too. Its a one stop nightlife joint.

Yelp
How have I NOT left a review for this place yet? Have been here on two occasions, and both times the drinks and food were outstanding. This is a great place for social gatherings. They have a solid selection of cocktails to choose from. They make a good old-fashioned and I am a fan of their signature What-A-Pear cocktail (spiced pear brandy, pineapple amaro, honey, lemon), which I inadvertently ended up ordering on both occasions. Variety of tapas to choose from. First time I came here, I ordered the shrimp quesadilla, which was oozing with freshly melted cheese and filled with a mix of shrimp, peppers, and diced tomatoes. Highly recommended! Was so happy to sample it once more the second time around. Despite our server's broken arm, she managed to singlehandedly bring out trays with bites of spring rolls, sautéed shrimp, guac & chips, spinach balls, and shrimp quesadilla and clear the seats and tables. Excellent service! Both times I went on a Tuesday, but it looks like they have trivia nights on Wednesdays and live bands and music on some Thursdays and weekends. From food, drinks, and service, Asiento is a great place to gather with friends, munch on some bites, and indulge in some libations.

Yelp
This is a cool relax place to meet with people. Great service and good food and drink options. Good space to enjoy an evening.

Yelp
Had my husband's 50th birthday party here and so glad I did! I ordered appetizer platters and all my guest loved it! The bar made great drinks and did not disappoint. Met Debbie the owner and I feel like I've known her for years! The sweetest. Love this place and ambience! Definitely be back!

Yelp
Really chill atmosphere, friendly bartenders, dog friendly, good bar eats. Big enough for groups. Good first drink spot and they have live music as well. Don't expect a fancy cocktail but the vibes are good.

Yelp
The business page does say tapas, but the menus do not (or if they do I missed it). So you can imagine my surprise when the $14 Juicy Burger which is an Asiento special apparently, came out on a saucer cup. It was in fact very delicious and juicy, but I ate it in two bites. I came home and heated up taquitos because I was still hungry. The drinks are good though! I like the Viva Roja which is a house cocktail - just the right amount of spiciness.

Yelp
We are visiting from Seattle, and if we had this bar in our town, we would be there all the time. The drinks are generous, the food menu is bar food, but with a twist, and is delicious, there is live music every week, the staff is friendly and impeccably attentive, and the owner is committed to providing a space for community to meet. Fantastic all around bar. My only complaint? Where ARE you SF? Y'all should support this bar. If you're in the neighborhood, and are looking for a place to hang and eat and drink, GO THERE. You will love it.

Yelp
Corner neighborhood bar with great cocktails and yummy food! The owner, Debi, welcomed us in while her husband (and their two dogs) was enjoying the daily special of steak tacos ($13). We grabbed a table in a cozy corner booth. There is outdoor seating that had an ensemble playing music and inside there is a space for a DJ and dance floor. We got a beer and red sangria. The sangria had a touch of cinnamon and a juicy orange slice. We also ordered gluten free noodle salad ($11) and queso fundido with house made tortilla chips. The noodles were made of cauliflour and seasoned perfectly mixed with cherry tomatoes, arugula, chopped nuts. I added chicken and it came with plenty of juicy chunks of breast meat so I could get my protein in. The melted cheese dip with added chorizo, was thick and had no added mix-ins or processed cheese. The tortilla triangles were house made and came perfectly salted - yum!

Yelp
I came here after the Carnival fest with a big group of friends on a Sunday and we had a great time. The music was fun and we all were dancing for a while. There wasn't a lot of people but I think it was a good amount. We ordered some food and I dont know if it's because we were drinking but we loved the food. I remember the fries and the meatballs being really good. I also remember them closing super early on that Sunday.

Chris T.

Yelp
Charming neighborhood bar with a surprisingly diverse and delicious selection of food items. There always seems to be something cool going on here from live music to trivia. Great little patio out front too!

Yelp
We stumbled upon this bar on a Friday night after getting dinner at a nearby Mission restaurant. We initially thought it was a Mexican/Latin cantina type place from the name but it turned out to be a regular old neighborhood bar. The staff made us feel very welcome and had some great recommendations (like adding peanut butter whiskey to our hot chocolate). The food portions are also great for the price. After a while, a DJ popped up in the corner and started playing some interesting tracks. You can't help but think that this is what old San Francisco used to be like - friendly, with just the right amount of weirdness.

Yelp
Nice and cute place and very friendly staff. I'm not much of a drinker but the food is really good! The Asiento Burger and the fries are really good. And the vibes are great. The place is nice and they got chill music and decorations.

Yelp
I've been in on quiet nights and busier event evenings but the vibe of this place is just right every time. Such a neighborhood gem! All of the craft cocktails are phenomenal, particularly the Oil Can and Basil Lemonade. The bartender recently recommended the Nova Roja and it's my new favorite. The food is so much more than just bar bites with a pretty extensive tapas style menu and regular specials. Red Thai Curry Meatballs and the Gambas have been the highlights for me but if you've come hungry then the Burger hits the spot.

Yelp
Came in on a Thursday night around 9 and got a table right away, which was great! Prices are reasonable, vibe was chill, and there was a DJ in the corner who didn't have the best mixing skills, but the music selection was fine. Loved the Sparkle Pom--slightly bubbly, fruity, and refreshing, almost like a light punch. The Smoking Strawberry was also a delight, very spicy and smoky, a pretty distinct cocktail. My husband didn't like his drink though, The Procrastinator--he said it was syrupy and not very complex. You get a lot of food for the prices. When they said tapas/small plates, I was expecting smaller, so we ordered three things, but we could've done with two. The ceviche was fresh and limey, which I love. Chips were crisp and went great with both the ceviche and the guac. The chicken quesadilla was absolutely loaded. Overall, we really enjoyed it!

Yelp
I went around 6pm on a Tuesday but it was rather dead, different from some other nearby places. The decor was interesting, and I think would be great Dr large parties. If it gets crowded it becomes mostly standing room. The drinks were fine, nothing too special. They do have local spirits with which you can try to ask them which can make other drinks more interesting! The food was quite good, tapas style. The bathrooms were reasonable and nothing to fear entering. I think if I went on another day it would be better. I will put a 3 stars now and will come back with an update.

Yelp
We really enjoyed hanging out at Asiento last night. Great food and drinks. Staff was amazing even the person working the door was so chill and positive. Deb is awesome. I'm biased for breakbeats but I couldn't stop dancing the entire night. We will definitely be going back in the near future. Thanks for the great time and memories.

Yelp
I went there with my coworkers to celebrate a friend's birthday 2/17/23 and we made the best out of a Funky and not in a good way situation. The one bartender they had there had such an Unwelcoming face, didn't smile all night. This is the second time I went and it'll be my last.

Yelp
This is a fun local watering hole. Great mixed drinks and beer selection (as well as decent non-alcoholic beers). The menus is great for bar fare, especially the shrimp options, but not what I consider a full restaurant menu. Owner and people running this gem are first rate.

Yelp
If you eat a burger slider thing here and it is not the tastiest thing you ever put in your mouth that is not a human genital, I'll give you $20.

Yelp
Love Asiento! Debi is so kind, the food is delish (love the homemade vegan burger), always great music & people & overall just a fun place to be!

Yelp
My friend and I were hanging around his new neighborhood, and this was before Trick Dog had reopened. Lost Resort had a wait, so we decided to linger down the block to Asiento. We did get a seat outside right away, then eventually moved inside because it was freezing outside. This bar has mediocre drinks, really nothing exciting here. I ended up getting 1-2 cocktails, but I can't remember what they were, only that they were bland. The vibe here is kind of odd. It's that 90s crowd...or rather, people who were probably in their 20s during the late 90s....which would make them in their late 40s? Lol. The music here was this 90s trance music, perfect if you're feelin' that. I do like the mural on the outside, which our friend said has been around since he lived in the Mission when he was a kid (the 90s, once again). lol. I probably won't return, but I can see this place being fun if you're a regular, and become friends with all the neighbors that frequent this bar.

Yelp
My friends and I went to Asiento for my birthday. My name was written behind the bar when we arrived, which was such a nice touch. Debi and I had emailed ahead of time so our part of the parklet was waiting for us when we arrived. The drinks were all perfect and the bartender was super gracious in accommodating all our tastes (all different mojitos with extra lime/extra sweetener), the food was delicious, and the staff was attentive and wonderful. My friends and I were really comfortable in the parklet, which the lights and heaters made so comfortable. We will be sure to come back.

Yelp
This is a long overdue review for a quintessential neighborhood and city spot. I've been coming to asiento for years and when I needed to think of a company holiday party location, this is what came to mind and I could not have asked for more! Deb was amazing from the beginning, giving me a wide range of great food and drink options and assuring me that regardless of what was picked, it'd be a hit. She was totally right. She and her staff were absolute gems the day of our event! The food was delicious (everyone left plenty happy and stuffed), drinks were masterfully made and the ambiance was the perfect blend of warm and intimate. If you want to come for a date night, friend hang (as I've done several times), or host an event: asiento is your place to go!

Yelp
Sat at the bar on a Wednesday around 6 PM with a friend and shared the steak quesadilla and lemon hummus. Both very good and ordered a bowl of chips for $2 to finish off the hummus. My favorite drink was the basil lemonade because I like drinks that don't taste like alcohol lol and that one tasted so refreshing compared to the red sangria. I'm sure people who enjoy the taste of alcohol would enjoy the sangria and the sparkle POM, but the lemonade is dangerously tasty. Staff was friendly too. Bar started filling up a little more outside around 630. I appreciate the bag hooks!

Yelp
One out of 2 favorite SF bars! Always a warm, friendly, dope, and professional establishment. A community serving place that adds so much happiness. Great food, service, and delicious cocktails. I recommend their Love Supreme with Mezcal.

Yelp
Asiento was our first dine-in experience this year when restaurants opened back up in SF for indoor dining and we had such a delightful evening! Came here for date night and the owner Debbie made us feel so welcome and took care of us. She even took the extra step to set up the space heater at our table that made it cozy and totally upped the ambience. Food and cocktails were fantastic, we had the spinach balls, deviled eggs and the tostadas. All very flavorful, the spinach balls was my favorite, quite a unique dish. Husband enjoyed the juicy burger and I tried the vegan burger which was just as good. The cucumber rosemary cocktail was refreshing and not too sweet and a winner. A great place to hangout in a larger group as well over some food and drinks. Will be back again for sure!

Yelp
Had issue with card here in November. Emailed and called and to this day no one responded. Bad customer service!

Jane S.

Yelp
Hosted a small event here this evening. Debi was amazing. I hadn't been to the location and I didn't know if we would have 10 or 30 people show up. Debi said not to worry about it. She set us up in the parklet - we wanted outside plus they were having another event inside. It was lovely. Plenty of heaters to keep us warm. She came out and took our first order and without us asking put everyone on a separate tab. Drinks were great. Snacks were great. Made us totally feel at ease. Enjoyed chatting with her throughout the evening.

Yelp
Awesome little spot in the mission! I went during the COVID social distance/outdoor dining only and I felt like they did a great job distancing people and utilizing 0 contact methods for ordering and paying. The prickly pear margarita is DELICIOUS and if you get any appetizers try the Queso Fondido and the deviled eggs! Incredible flavors! Sadly the owner was saying they will be shutting down when outdoor dining was shut down. I hope they make it through the pandemic because this place is must go to!

Yelp
I never understood the concept of a "neighborhood bar" until I moved half a block away from Asiento. I also never understood the idiom "recipe for disaster" until I started bringing all my first dates here. Honestly you can't blame me, Asiento has it all for date night: - Their live DJ plays catchy jams at a reasonable volume still conducive to the 'get to know you' conversations - Their boardgames provide the opportunity to deeper suss out the intelligence of your potential life partner - Their medium dark lighting gives a girl amazing cheekbones and a slimmer frame - Their bar and price point does not break the piggy bank so even if the date sucks, one wouldn't go broke buying your own drink With that said, you're all probably wondering about my aforementioned "recipe for disaster". I will share this story in hopes that all you single folks do not make the same mistake I did... Storytime: It started out as yet another typical online first date - the guy was good looking, employed, and chivalrous enough to let me pick our first date location and of course, I chose Asiento. Things were going well - he arrived on time, looked like his photos and even got us our first round of moderately priced drinks. As we settled into our table next to the DJ spinning moderately volumed jams, my date decided to challenge me to a game of Scrabble. I agreed to it thinking, "Perfect, now I can suss out his intelligence before considering offspring reproduction." As he started setting up the game, we both simultaneous noticed the score pad in the box - it had 1 sheet left attached to it, but it was already written on - the top of the score chart read: Spring | Taylor Perhaps I could've claimed that Taylor was my roommate and that we visited this bar frequently or perhaps Taylor was actually a female friend. Unfortunately my body reacted before my brain did - within milliseconds, I tore out the page and crumbled it up in my fist. Had he not stopped me, I probably would've eaten it to destroy the evidence. 'Awkward' could not describe the next moments in time as he called out the elephant in the room and I wished the DJ would turn up the music. I also wished they served stronger drinks and that the lighting was darker to hide my face that was beet red from embarrassment. Lesson of the night here kids? Never play Scrabble on a first date.

Stephanie D.

Yelp
We were really happy with the food. We tried the shrimp quesadilla and the ceviche. Both were tasty. I got a margarita and my husband got a kolsh. The margarita wasn't the best, it was supposed to be spicy but overall it didn't taste like much. The kolsh also had an off taste. But we would be back for the food. The space was also really chill when we got there which was nice for our meal. When we left it was packed.

Nina D.

Yelp
The best parklet in San Francisco. Love the small bites - good for meat eaters and vegetarians (vegetarians - get the spinach balls!) The fries are the best I have ever eaten. (They have sweet potato fries, too, which I love, but their regular fries are just amazing Trust me!) Cocktails are all great, the blood orange margarita especially. They have comedy and live music nights, but you can normally just walk up and get an outside table. There are a couple of inside tables available now (and a huge variety of games). Brunch here is always special. The tater tots - to die for. And bacon bloody maries for the meat eaters! And crab cake benedict? Are you kidding me. The owner really knows her stuff with good, and what flavours go with what. The owner is lovely, too. During the wort of the pandemic, she catered food for the homeless. Check it out and support a local business.

Yelp
Love when band OneTimeMore played here. They will be there February 17th 7p-11p check them out! Have a glass or two of wine and delicious finger foods.

Yelp
I came here for their comedy show and had the best time. My drink tasted so good and the sandwich was amazing. I would definitely come back for the comedy show.

Yelp
We went here on a Wednesday night for comedy night! Best COVID safe idea ever! There outdoor set up is really cute, they did a great job. We made a reservation for 7 pm for 3 people. We sat down and ordered the basil lemonade and the prickly pear margarita! They were delicious and easy to drink, I couldn't taste any alcohol really. We ordered some small plates, the quesadillas, spinach balls, and the queso fundio. My favorite was the spinach balls! I never had anything like that before, similar to falafel but this had a kick to it! The quesadillas were yummy, saucey and we chose chicken for the meat. Around 7:30 they started the comedy show, there were about 5 different comedians and they all were great. This was just something very nice and different to do during these covid times. We laughed and enjoyed ourselves. Debbie our server was so nice and she even invited us back for her little birthday celebration! We will come back for sure. Thanks guys!
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
perfect tapas supper & drinks tonight at Asiento. Their outdoor park-let is really one of the best; great service and you feel like you're in a patio, not eating on the street! Owner Debbie was even happy to split our tab 5 ways, so this is a good place to go with a group. (We were going to a Marsh show on Valencia, but all of my friends said they were so happy we went here instead of eating on Valencia St.)
google avatar

Maddy L.

Yelp
My friend and I had dinner and then we went looking for a nice place to have a cocktail in the area to continue catching up. We tried out two different bars in the area that were super crowded and bougie - not the vibe we were looking for AT ALL. Thankfully, we ended up stumbling upon Asiento! Super cute venue with tons of couches, chairs, and a well stocked bar. There was a DJ there (on a Friday night) playing background tunes. The bartenders were really friendly, and it turned out that one of the female bartenders was also the owner! Gotta love a female owned establishment. For drinks, my friend and I both had the Sparkling Pom - delicious!!! I think we each had like 4+ lol. Overall, loved the laidback vibe and the delicious drinks. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Where do I start!!!!! This GEM hidden in plain sight in the mission was a hit!!!! The bartender MAX a complete pro and master drink mixer WOW!!! He made custom drinks that blew my finances mind!!! Exceptional service and excellent food!! We will be here every Wednesday for the dinner and a show and to see our new favorite mixologist MAX!!!!!!!

Cheri S.

Yelp
Love the makeover! Comfortable and refined vibes! Food remains tasty and the drinks are exceptional.
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely love the food here!! The service quality is another story. My friend asked for another plate, and the bartender thought hard about it and replied "we don't usually give out extra plates, but here you go". I've worked in the service industry and have frequented restaurants for decades and I have never been told such a thing! Then they gave me a salad without silverware. I then asked for silverware and they did not give me any. I ate my absolutely amazing salad with my fingers. Super bad service!
google avatar

Braeden S.

Yelp
Attended on a Wednesday night for comedy night! It was all outdoors and we had tapas along with some decent comedic talent. I enjoyed the juicy burger, fries w/saracha mayo, and the guacamole. A little pricey though given the portion size.
google avatar

Doug I.

Yelp
I'm a nurse working at a quarantine facility being catered by Asiento. The quality of care that went into my dinner is the help I needed to get through my shift. Thanks Asiento!
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
Love this spot perfect vibe for just about everything, the food is really tasty and priced decently, the DJ and music is awesome, waitstaff and bartenders are cool, and the ambience is just perfect. Love this place during the weekend for a night out, and during the week for a cool spot to catch up with friends.

John M.

Yelp
Soo good! Stopped by for a quick bite on a Sunday afternoon and was blown away by juicy burger!
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
I love this bar! For starters, if you go earlier in the evening, the noise levels actually allow you to have a conversation with the people around you. The music is good (there's usually even a DJ), but unlike other places in SF, Asiento doesn't seem invested in forcing a club environment on it's patrons. The service is down-to-Earth and attentive. The bartender was friendly, knowledgeable, gave great recommendations, and made great drinks. The food was delicious - we ordered the spring rolls, queso fundido, and Thai curry meat balls. The food came out a little slower than my preference but seems like that was how long the food actually took to prepare as it all came out hot and at the same time. Down sides: It was a cold night and the place didn't have much heating. Music gets turned up around 8:30/9 (great music, but not great for talking to people around you). I imagine the food service could be ultra-slow if it's crowded in there as there aren't a lot of people working there.
google avatar

Allister D.

Yelp
Eh.. Idk. This place is weak. I thought it'd be better but it's just ok. It's a divey-type bar with a dance floor and a DJ. I mean it's a cool place for a small group of friends to have a no-planned evening. Great for beers, maybe tapas? and just a short hangout for the night. Me and some friends came for a friend's bday party last night and it was alright. Sure, I got to dance and get my two-stop in, but that was about it. It can get a bit too stuffy in here and too hot. We left cause we needed to wipe the sweat off and breathe.
google avatar

Brandon R.

Yelp
I had a good time. Staff was very friendly and location is nice. Food and Cocktails were underwhelming, but decent. If you get food, get the Thai curry meatballs!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Was worried that this bar would be too "divey", but I really enjoyed the vibe! It's cozy and casual, without being too divey. I came here on a date on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty, and they had a DJ playing house/edm music. It wasn't too loud that you couldn't talk. Drinks were more affordable as well than your averaged sf bar! I'd definitely come back!
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
Review for drinks only. Overall: great little spot for drinks with reasonable prices, with funky tunes from the dj and a low key vibe. If you check in with Yelp, you get a discount on a premium cocktail ($7 bucks!). I checked in but didn't get a cocktail. I was driving, so I wanted to go with something a bit lower proof. It's a Spanish-inspired place, and they have a few Spanish wines by the glass as well as some others from various global and domestic locales. I asked and received a taste of the Tempranillo. It was decent and I had a glass of it. The bartender was very friendly about the taste, which I always appreciate. Who wants to commit to a full glass when it might not be to your liking? They have a full bar and a pretty long list of craft cocktails to choose from. They also have beer on tap. Asiento serves what looked like a broad variety of tapas and share plates, but I didn't have anything to eat. I definitely would be interested in giving the food a try in the future. Atmosphere: It wasn't very crowded on a Tuesday night, and that was perfectly fine with me. It has a neighborhood-y feel--something more upscale than a dive, but still casual, friendly and approachable. Seating options include tables, the bar, and some leather couches and chairs. It's a good date place or a place to get a casual drink after work.

Liz J. M.

Yelp
A friend suggested Asiento as a good spot for my casual dance and mingle birthday party. I reached out to the owner and was surprised and delighted at how easy it was to coordinate this. The bar does not charge any fees or minimums. The owner understands that when someone throws a party here, all incentives align to get a good crowd, which in turn leads to revenue, fun, enjoyment, and just general good vibes. I took over the DJ booth, which honestly was a thrill because the sound system is glorious yet easy to use (I just connected my laptop). The space is set up equally perfectly for relaxing and lounging as it is for dancing. My friends all had wildly positive feedback for the space, food, and cocktails. For example: my partner's comments on restaurant food normally range between "fine," which means edible, and "halfway decent," or slightly better than edible. He lauded the burger here as "fantastic," which is an extremely rare compliment coming from him. The lemon hummus is wonderfully velvety, and the cocktails are delicious - particularly the Adult Root Beer, Smoky Strawberry, Basil Lemonade and Sparkle Pom. While creative, the drinks are not fussy or overdone: just darn tasty. Overall the vibe at Asiento is super fun, relaxed, warm, and happy. I believe this begins with the general disposition of the staff. Whether you are looking for a place to host a party or just a relaxed and friendly spot with satisfying drinks and food, head over to Asiento.
