The 5 Wackiest Brewery Names at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival | Eater Denver

"Named deliberately to be unforgettable, the founder — after attending many beer festivals and struggling to remember the beers and breweries he liked — chose a vulgar, attention-grabbing phrase reportedly used by a friend; the provocative moniker was selected to make the brewery impossible to forget and reflect a playful, irreverent brand approach." - Paul Albani-Burgio

Been meaning to try Ass Clown Brewing Company. It was a great spot!!! it was super cute inside and had great ambience. The beertender was fantastic and let me try some samples. I had the Unfold which was a berry sour and it was soooo good. They had no food but a bunch of snacks for sale and very dog friendly! Can’t wait to go back and try other things!

Been coming here for years. This brewery is all about the beer. Staff is knowledgeable about everything they sell. EVERYTHING they make is good. I’ve literally never tried something here I didn’t like. Love the new seating area they recently opened up. If you haven’t tried this place you are missing out. Just great beer. Some of their best sellers are in cans to go, and they will refill your growler if that’s your preference (and doesn’t have to be theirs). Been to Lost Worlds, D9, Primal….the space is smaller, the beer is superior. Just wish I could get it at more local restaurants.

Matt is the man, he does it all. The best beer in Cornelius hands down. If you want different options that is not your same ol come here. The OC will never disappoint. Spicy beers yes sir. Come in and ask the bar tenders they know what's up.

Another excellent brewery tucked away in an industrial park. Cozy with a few intimate spaces for gathering to hang with friends and enjoy their quality brews. They had a selection of 15-20 beers on tap. We were there in December so stouts and porters were the order of the day. They have to go packs and some cool merch. This is worth hunting out and stopping for a spell.

Rob G.

Google
This is a small charming microbrewery with s great selection of craft beer. They also have a nice merchandise area for clothing and accessories. It's located amongst some warehouses and is very popular with the locals. They don't serve food or have any sort of entertainment.

I stopped by to pick up some beer for my coworkers. Unfortunately, they didn't have the one I wanted in stock, but I ended up getting a different one. The bartender was very nice and helpful. He gave me a couple beer to sample, and he made suggestions based on the beer that I went there for. You can buy any beer in draft in a can that might be 32 oz. He offered it to the one I was interested in. Since I can't even drink a 16 oz in one setting, there is no reason for me to attempt to drink a 32 oz 😂. Anyway, I enjoyed my quick visit, and appreciate the bartender helping me. It is interesting that they have a cigar room. Definitely unique.

Google
My favorite brewery in the Charlotte area, and possibly the best ever. Matt and his staff are great, and the beer is the best around. The atmosphere is like a Midwestern basement, which is like home to me.

Google
One of our favorites when visiting NC. Great beers, awesome atmosphere, great merch and awesome staff. The people who frequent are always friendly and make for a great time😀👊

Yelp
Great service, great Selection of beer and great music! A little off the beaten path but worth the visit.

Yelp
I loved every beer that I tried. I started with a flight and chose, Blonde Ale, Apple Pie Vienna, Ass Clown IPA, and Unfold. All four were so good. Bartender was super cool to chat with. Place had a cool vibe and I'm always looking for new stickers in which they had. I will 100% be back and/or go to their other establishment, Alongside down in Charlotte.
google avatar

Yelp
Little disappointed in the beer that we had. I had a flight & was not pleased by any of them. The place is still quaint & clever. Off the beaten path.

Yelp
If I am being honest, we literally decided to go to this brewery based solely on their name. The beertenders told us that they hear that a lot so good for the owners to be clever when creating the business. This brewery is in an industrial park which I love, smaller, non-pretentious and just about making good beer. When looking online the pictures appear to be outdated of the brewery because when we walked in, it was put together far more than what I was expecting, and I was pleasantly surprised. There were several small seating areas and bar seating. They also have a side room that no one was using but I am sure it is used often. We sat at the bar and looked over the beers and loved that they had 3 taps and 27 of them where theirs. For the size of this brewery, I would have never imaged them having that many taps and a wide variety of styles to boot. It was difficult to decide what we wanted to try and one of my selections, my niece liked so much she bought a crowler to take home with her because it wasn't one of the options in a 4 pack. Service was really friendly and even offered us to try a few other beers, many the spicy ones because Ben always thinks he can handle them, or they aren't that hot. Well... The Ghost Chili IPA kicked his butt. He said it was the hottest beer that he has ever had, which that title was formally help by Barely Moe's Son of Seabiscuit (no longer in business). I took the most baby sip ever and was like HELL NO! My niece who is a little spitfire decided to challenge Ben's "manhood" and dared him to drink it all at once as he was already red and sweating. Oddly, when that happened, he said it went down much better and the burn didn't linger as bad. This was a win for sure and we will be back to enjoy more of their tasty beers.

Yelp
Fantastic local brewery make very enjoyable beers. Loved the company name, love the motto, and enjoy the decor. Richelle and I tried the German Shepard Marzen, the Raisin Up porter, Vienna Moon larger, and a todays a lager kinda day, 5oz samplers . All had wonderful flavor. But the true stand out was the loaded soul II (buffalo trace bourbon barrel aged) imperial stout. I tried a sip from a friends pint, I think it's the best bourbon barrel aged beer I had. Loaded souls II, is only available at the tap house. No can, no bottles, no growers, no crowlers, no howlers, so sad I can't take it home.

Yelp
The Aesthetic: Laid back brewery with hilarious clown vibes, rustic decor and a carnival-esque theme. I kinda wished the popcorn machine was on, I love a good old-fashioned popcorn and beer combo! The Price: The beer was average brewery priced, not too cheap and not too expensive. The Parking: It's in an industrial area with very little around it, so parking is plentiful. The parking lot was slightly creepy at night which fit the place really well. My Order: I'm a big fan of sours and saisons so I tried the "She said her name was Cheri" and I loved the fruity, funky cherry aftertaste. I also tried a sip of the "Thai Coffee Stout" and that had a very strong coffee flavor, it's probably great with a breakfast pastry. The Conclusion: Based on the name alone, you know you want to try this place. I'm a horror fan, so it was right up my alley, but I promise even if you have Coulraphobia, the beer is superb!

Yelp
Can't believe I've never reviewed Ass Clown before, as I often drown my sorrows here on the way home from a Panthers loss. Ass Clown is known for their eclectic and flavorful takes on beer, from Ghost Pepper IPAs and multiple tasty sours all the way to chocolate sea salt stouts. The stouts are always a hit for me, but I enjoy things up and down the lineup.

Yelp
I have been hearing about this brewery for a long time based on their very unique name. I was in the area today and decided to finally check it out as I had had their beers in other places. I was shocked to say how small the place was, but it had a very intimate vibe. The bartender was super nice and very friendly and the beer I had was really good. Definitely will be back when I'm back in that area and you definitely should check it out yourself. Unique name, super good beer, super friendly people.

Yelp
We love this place!! Always come back. IPAs for him and stouts for me. Great selection and variety.

Yelp
What an amazing place! We had such a great time here! Well worth the trip! This has been on our list for a while. I was a little worried that the hype would lead to disappointment, but not in the very least!! As soon as we pulled up, we knew it was going to be fabulous. When you enter, there is so much to see that you can't even figure out where to look first! We were immediately greeted by the beertender who was so incredibly helpful!! You could tell that he loves his job and wants to make his customers happy. He allowed us to sample so many beers! He definitely went the extra mile! We took a ton of pics and then had to check out the merch!! We couldn't resist buying a few things! Oh! And the beer? Holy smokes! Fantastic. I chose the pumpkin IPA, which tastes like dessert. My travel mate grabbed a flight that we both enjoyed. Every beer was seriously delicious!!! I am thrilled that it lived up to beyond our expectations! If you love breweries, this needs to be on your bucket list! You won't be sorry!!

Yelp
This place is worth a visit for the name check-in alone! I had had a couple of their beers at the Flying Saucer and really enjoyed them, so I thought I check out the homebase. I'm so glad I did! The decor and vibe and atmo is exactly what you would expect and makes for a fun visit. The staff is great and make awesome suggestions, let you sample before you buy and have a great flight board. None of the beers were disappointing and i was happy to see more than one high gravity on the board. Lots of locals, which always makes a seat at the bar entertaining. You can definitely make a daytrip w/this as your first or last stop with nearby D9, Primal, and Eleven Lakes breweries.
google avatar

Yelp
Great brewery with a ton of selections. The bartender was super friendly and gave us lots of good recommendations. We also loved the branding from this place and bought a shirt. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice local brewery. The indoors area is much nicer than most places. Tons of options to try and they're always so welcoming.
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
This was a great find, the beer boss new his stuff! The beer was was clean tasting, cold perfect, they had great flavors especially the espresso stout. My girlfriend loved the sours on tap. The facility was cozy and made you feel like you were in your best friends living room kicking back some brews.
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Great beers in a cozy place, with outdoor seating. Very cool flight trays! The raspberry cider is fantastic
google avatar

Rick M.

Yelp
Nice little brewery with solid beer and friendly staff. I tried a few different things here my favorite was the Orange Citrus IPA. No food here so plan on ordering a pizza from Marcos or bringing your own food.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
We met friends here for a drink before going to dinner and we were impressed. The brown ale was phenomenal and I want more just thinking about it. The decor is creative and unique, entertaining us and keeping us interested. I loved the beer tap handles. We will definitely be back to try more brews!
google avatar

Mandy D.

Yelp
The building is located in an industrial park, but once you go through the door, it's a cozy, quaint brewery! They had trivia going on while we were there. The DJ was great! He was full of personality and fun! The agave lime is so light and refreshing. My husband had several stouts and loved each one! There was a great assortment of beers, sours, wines and ciders. The only one I didn't car for was the sunshine sour, but not going to knock them for it since they have so many choices.
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
This place was a nice surprise. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside was really fun and cozy. The beer was excellent and of course the merch was a hoot! Definitely recommend the stop.

Isabel L.

Yelp
Came in the other day and had an amazing experience. The beer was good but the bartender is what did it for me! Mrs mary was the sweetest, I adore her!
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
Tight space good beer. About 15 choices on tap, most rotating seasonally. Very adventurous Brewers here. Beware the ghost pepper, best to cut it with another even if you like hot stuff.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Ass Clown Brewing Co, you will either like it or dislike it. The beers are unique and the name is.. um.. interesting.. On this visit Boyfriend and I split a flight - Vanilla Saison, Gingerbread, Orange Citrus IPA and Dark Chocolate Sea Salt. My favorite out of these was definitely the Vanilla Saison. I did not care for the Gingerbread or Dark Chocolate beers, they were not what I expected flavor wise. There are so many beers to choose from unfortunately we were only in town for part of the day so we had to limit ourselves. Overall, chill spot with an interesting decor. I almost forgot to mention, Google maps seems to be very confused by this location so just remember to turn on Parkway Commerce Center Drive.

Dennis I.

Yelp
Great selection of beer and perfect ambience. Service was also solid and clientele was colorful.

Emily K.

Yelp
The best brewery in the area! They constantly have new brews based on the season, not just the same ones all year long. They aren't afraid to actually add spice and heat to their beers which is amazing as someone who enjoys spicy beer! Check this place out if you like good beer

David P.

Yelp
Beer is really good. Server was awesome and warned me about the level of spice on one of the beers. I'll come back
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Stopped here again Friday on our way home from New York. This place becomes more of a favorite every time I come! They are starting to bottle some now, thus the reason for this update. While I was there, I had the Imperial Vanilla Stout and at 14.8% you know you've had it! My wife has also discovered she loves their Pinot Noire, which disappointingly wasn't being sold in bottles yet. They did say it should be soon, so maybe next time. It's a bit off the the main road to find it, but well worth the stop if yo love a good beer with a friendly staff!
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
I tried two of their brews and was very impressed. The vanilla raspberry porter is memorable for being something so different and executed so perfectly - it tasted just like a dark chocolate raspberry cake! This place is not just the name; it really still makes the quality beer to back it up. Note, don't come hungry, but do come thirsty.

Yelp
There is a reason Ass Clown is becoming a brewery that people are talking about all over the state. They consistently release delicious and innovative beer and provide a unique venue in which to drink it. I must admit that, even though Ass Clown is practically in our back yard, I often forget about it when the beer mood strikes. My fiancée was the one who recommended it this past Thursday, and I am very happy that she did. The place was busy but not packed. It is small inside, so it can very easily become difficult to find a seat. Lucky for us, the couch was open! It is our favorite place to enjoy a brew. We each started with and Imperial Maple Coffee Stout that was a bit heavy but tasty. I would have liked more of the maple flavor to come through, but I enjoyed it enough to drain the glass. Our second beer was the Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Porter or Stout (I can't remember which) That is a beer that will get you in trouble! It was like drinking melted peanut butter and I loved it! I will definitely be returning to fetch a growler fill of that! My advice: drink the beer slow. All of their brews have higher ABV's and will hit you quickly if you guzzle them down.
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Wide selection of great beers with very cool bartenders! A definite win in our books!
google avatar

Megan J.

Yelp
Not a bad brewery by any means, but not really my cup of tea. It is probably my least favorite brewery in the Charlotte area. It didn't feel very welcoming, but more like a local spot where local people who know each other hang out. They have a lot of sour beers and if you like sour beers this is your place. Unfortunately, I am not a big sour beer girl so I wasn't too impressed with my options. They have a bunch of IPAs on their site but only had 1 on tap when I was there. I will try it out again and hopefully they will change my mind.
google avatar

Laurie I.

Yelp
Love love love the beers. Wish they would not change the names so often as I was looking for the beer i had the last time and its no longer on the board. The bartender is quick but not the friendliest I have seen around but not rude or nasty either, just not super friendly. Like the place, the location is odd, but like it all the same now that we can find it. The beers are the best I have had since OMB. Will be back
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Wonderful large selections, very comfy setting and good service. Did I mention the beer ... great Holiday selections during Christmas and planning another visit in the near future. Free popcorn was a nice touch too Thanks
google avatar

Mary Alice R.

Yelp
I have never seen so many open taps at a single brewery. If they don't have something you like, then you just don't like beer.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
The review I posted for Ass Clown has been collecting some dust, so it definitely deserves an update. My most recent trip, I had their Orange Citrus IPA, an amazing well rounded beer with a crisp, clean finish - DEEEElicious! It was the beginning of a day where I went to five other breweries. The bartender (in a non-cocky way) said - "you'll be back for more - our beer is better". And he's right - it was the best beer I had all day. I always come back for more and their beer is definitely awesome. I know - it's a bit of a hike, but well worth it. I too wish it was closer to home! Whether you like IPAs, Ales, Stouts or Porters, Ass Clown makes it all and does it well!!
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
Love love love this place! It's my absolute favorite brewery! They do so much crazy stuff with their brews that I always look forward to coming here! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
The selection of beers at this brewery is impressive. As a sour fanatic I was pleasantly surprised. Ended up trying several flights and enjoyed everything I sampled!
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
Nice beers! Stopped to try a few and all of them we tried were great. Pretty small inside but it does have outdoor seating outback. Great beer!
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Love the ambiance in this little brewery! They have fun and unique decorations that include a wall made entirely of cigar boxes, and fun and comfy seats. They also offer a selection of board games which is always a plus. Only downside is that they do not offer any outdoor seating since the space is a little limited. They have a great selection of beers, a delicious (I think it was plum) sour, and an ipa that I had. Great stop for an afternoon after the lake or if you are up in the Cornelius area.
google avatar

Mitch J.

Yelp
Buried in a business park off of Bailey Road. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but deserves to be given a chance. Very cozy inside. Friendly patrons and my favorite bartender in the Lake Norman area (Matt). Matt's always welcoming and has a gift for remembering names. Go a second time and I guarantee he'll greet you by name. He's also able to make solid recommendations on what you'll like and is willing to let you taste anything on tap before going "all in." Cool swag (glassware, hats, tees) for purchase. Bought a bunch to use as prizes at a business meeting. They were a HUGE HIT and raised the stakes of team competition.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Hidden in the back of a Cornelius industrial park, Ass Clown Brewing is a cool, cozy spot to duck in for a tasty beer in a fun, laid-back setting. While Ass Clown lacks many of the amenities that define Charlotte's larger breweries, it has a deep selection of beers on tap, including the delicious Orange Citrus IPA and the small-batch IPA, 'Spelt It Up.' Unfortunately, the lack of an outdoor seating area, food trucks or larger tables makes Ass Clown somewhat underwhelming when compared to other local breweries. Worth a stop if you happen to be in the area, but not necessarily worth a special trip.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
22 Ass Clown beers on tap at the taproom. Do I even need to continue this review? I will anyways... This is a brewery that had been on my to-do list for a long time, just because I thought the name was funny honestly. While the brewery is a bit out there, somewhat hard to find, and very unassuming from the outside... They more than make up for it with their beers! The taproom on the inside is pretty sweet as well. The first beer I tried was the Maple Black Ale... Whoa. I had to get a pint of it even though there were so many other good sounding beers on the list. Next, instead of being an "ass clown" and asking to taste a bunch of beers, I decided to go with a flight. The flights are a bit more expensive here, but the pours are much heavier. I got the Apple Autumn, the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Stout (Nitro), Imperial Spiced Brown, and the Amber. All were really good.. Especially the Stout! I like that they had a little bit of something for everyone and had them clearly separated in categories (they also had a Smoked Ham & Corn Stout... I couldn't muster the courage to try it though.. lol). I hope to find myself in the area again soon so that I can come back and try some more funky sounding beers!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Don't let the name fool you-- this place has great beer! The location is a little interesting as it's in an industrial park. The inside is cozy. Lots of beers to try and my husband loved their IPA's! Just wish it was a better location with some open outdoor space. Love seeing their beers on tap at local establishments
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
Found this place via Yelp and figured with a great name like Ass Clown why not see what they have. Went in specifically for the bacon flavored beer but of course so was everyone else it was out. The bartender asked what I was looking for and I went rogue and tried the starfruit one which was a little sour but really enjoyed it. So I ordered up a growler and drank it the next night while at the pool. When I am back in the area I will certainly try another brew.
google avatar

Monica D.

Yelp
I don't even know where to start with this place. It was all amazing. I love that it's located in an unassuming office park in Cornelius. I love that the exterior gives away nothing at all about the interior. I love that parking is easy and traffic is nonexistent. I love that it's totally biking distance from my house (for my husband, not for me -- though I am an adult who has successfully ridden a bicycle in the past, it seems my current bike-riding skills are more akin to the walking skills of a baby colt approximately a minute after being born -- sloppy but adorable). I love that their beer selection is diverse and ever-changing. I love that they make their own wine (I can't wait to try it!). I love the little details of this place -- the exposed wood rafters (probably more for decoration than function, but I don't care), the intimate ski lodge seating area and the high top bar area, the cool things for sale. I love that their beer flights are served in a board that looks like a clown's horn (you know, the thing they squeeze in your face when they're trying to be funny). I love their logo (both iterations ... I never figured out which one is more recent). I love that their bartenders are chatty but not too much so, and that they have good recommendations for anyone who comes in looking for something new to delight their palate. So in case you haven't guessed yet ... I love Ass Clown Brewing Company. And you will, too.

Yelp
Went to Ass Clown for the first time on Sunday to catch some of the Panthers game in a low-key, non sports bar. Ass Clown was AWESOME and I was really impressed with the number of beers they had on tap. I have the Orange Citrus IPA, and it had great flavor. My boodle tried it and also liked it, which says a lot... he's very particular about his IPAs. The bartender was really nice and attentive to our needs. We ended up closing out our tab with three beers and a bag of local popcorn, which was yummy. Ass Clown does have a smaller taproom, so it may not be great for large groups. If you're looking for a chill place to drink some beers and hang out, this is a great spot! ALSO: There is plenty of parking as they are located toward the back of an office park.

Yelp
Ass Clown has been a stone's throw from our apartment ever since we moved here, but we never managed to check it out. With nothing going on this particular Saturday afternoon we decided to finally head over and see the place. I've had Ass Clown once or twice before at Brixx, but hadn't seen them elsewhere otherwise. It's a bit tough to find the brewery, but it's worth the adventure. The interior has some neat decor with lighting fixtures made out of growler bottles and couches covered with burlap sacks. There is a decent amount of seating between bar, counter, tables and couches and the guys working were pretty friendly. Ass Clown makes a heck of a lot of unique flavors, and there were about nine available today. I highly recommend getting the flight for $8 simply because you really will want to try out multiple flavors. They use a neat flight tray that actually has a handle for easy transportation and the bartender is able to write on each one so you know exactly which beer you are drinking each time...there have been too many times when either the bartender or I forgot which beer was which in a flight. I opted for the Seasalt Chocolate, Bacon & Oyster, Ginger Sour and Amber Ale. All of them packed some great flavor and the main flavors really stand out. The Sea Salt one had a crazy salty aftertaste that left me thirsty. I wasn't as big a fan of the Bacon & Oyster, as the richness and smokiness of the bacon flavor was a bit much for me. I enjoyed the Ginger Sour, and each sip/gulp leaves you puckering your lips from the sourness. I went with the Amber Ale lastly because I wanted something a little less complex, but there was still some nice, sweet flavor coming out of it. I also stole quite a few sips from the missus Raspberry/Vanilla Porter, which had a fantastic raspberry flavor to it (though I would have liked to have had the vanilla stand out a bit more.) My father-in-law also had a flight and I tried some of his Green Apple Buttered Pie which had a tart apple taste with a rich buttery finish. Based on the beer selection, quality, and location I totally see us hanging out here more in the future. It's a great laid back place to chill and grab a brew. As I always say, I just wish they provided some kind of food to help absorb some of the alcohol.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere, decent beers. Friendly staff!outdoor seating available, masks required. Worth checking out for sure!

Yelp
This place I travel long distances to visit. Such a neat brewery tucked away where you wouldn't expect it to be. Great, yes great beer here, fellow aficionados. Always innovating, never boring, this brewery has more than one beer for every taste. Combine that with a staff that loves what they do, and you too would make this place a "special treat" go-to if you don't reside nearby. My favorite: Orange Citrus IPA...
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Tucked away in an office park, finding Ass Clown was the worst part of the experience. They have a great, wide-ranging menu of their brews as well as some snack options from local vendors. Bar seating, high-top tables, and a couple couches are located throughout the taproom. A smaller, more intimate taproom than most places, which I enjoyed thoroughly! The bartender answered any and all questions, and even provided some insight to the Panthers offensive woes against the Saints while we were watching the game.
