OC’s 18 Best Bakeries for Bread, Pastries, and More | Eater LA

"Hidden in the back of Heritage Plaza in Irvine, the family-owned bakery serves honey-sweetened flaky baklava and zoolbia — a crunchy Iranian dessert soaked in saffron and rose-flavored sugar syrup. Diners can also find fried bamieh — sticky Persian donuts — and popular cream puffs." - Jenn Tanaka

Been here multiple times and always loved it. I often get the zoolmia for large friends and family gatherings and they taste great - very sweet but also very similar to Indian jalebi. The folks who run the shop have always been very friendly. The items are all reasonably priced. Went most recently to get something for Mother's Day and they had a bunch of nice looking gift boxes. They're happy to tell you what's in each product and help you pick something for your taste, like if you want more snacky, less sweet. Parking lot gets crowded on weekends and I also find that the parking spaces are very tight there.

I regret to inform you that we encountered what can only be described as the worst customer service experience ever. On [Date of Purchase], we visited your store and purchased a cake the cake we purchased did not have the ingredients listed, as is customary and necessary for individuals with food allergies like myself. Despite assuming that the cake was a regular one, it later became evident that the cake contained walnuts and hazelnuts, to which I have a severe allergy. The absence of clear labeling on the cake packaging regarding the presence of nuts resulted in a grave oversight on your part, leading to a severe allergic reaction that required immediate medical attention. The lack of transparency and communication regarding potential allergens in your products not only jeopardizes the health and safety of customers but also violates basic consumer rights. Furthermore, the unhelpful attitude displayed by your staff, including the manager on duty, during our ordeal only exacerbated the situation and left a lasting negative impression. It is unacceptable that such negligence and lack of professionalism are tolerated within your establishment. I urge you to take immediate action to rectify this matter and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. As a conscientious consumer, I implore you to review and enhance your food safety protocols, ensure transparent labeling of all ingredients, and provide comprehensive training to your staff on handling allergy-related issues with compassion and efficiency. I trust that you will treat this matter with the seriousness and urgency it warrants and provide a prompt response outlining the steps you intend to take to address these concerns. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this important issue. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I used to buy pastries frequently here and their quality was good. I even recommended it on Reddit when someone asked for a good pastry place. Recently we bought pistachio roll and other stuff. And the pistachio roll was clearly not fresh. When my wife pointed it out to them later (in 2 hours), they started to 1) deny it and say the roll is good, and then 2) blame us not store pastries properly and then 3)offer us a low-ball compensation. It is already a red flag for their pastry being not fresh. Their bad customer service made the service even worse. We all want to support small businesses in local communities. But this place doesn't deserve our support anymore.

Amazing bakery, everything is beautiful and delicious! 😍😍🙌❤️

Google
Cakes: 3 stars. If you like heavy cream and thin layers of cakes this might work for you. Not sweet at all. Cookies: 10 stars !! I tried the chickpea cookies and they are simply delicious. They literally melt in your mouth!! Soooo good.

Google
I had a very disappointing experience at Assal Pastry. Upon walking in, I was abruptly told to “move your dog out” before even being greeted. There was no “hello” or any courtesy, just a harsh tone that felt incredibly disrespectful. As a customer, I expect basic manners, especially from a business owner. Also, in California, service dogs are legally allowed in businesses, so a more respectful approach would be to kindly ask or clarify if the dog is a service animal. Based on this unprofessional and rude treatment, I will not be returning.

Google
Really love the pastries here. It is a sort of cultural awakening because it takes me back in time enjoying to the same goodies we used to get in Bombay and Pune in India. Love it!!

Sa Mo

Google
This bakery used to be very good. The quality declined significantly. Their pastries are not fresh and they use low quality ingredients ( Sour taste cream for cakes and Zoulbia tastes like old and burned oil saturated with sugar - dried out Baklava ).

Yelp
Every occasion in our house is celebrated with Assal pastry, they are the best in town and none like in OC. Very light and tasty cakes.
google avatar

Iekika M.

Yelp
This place had such a wide range of desserts! Some packaged very nicely ready to go. We came here for the baklava and they had lots to choose from. I got a variety of each flavor and it was alright. I was expecting it to be crispy but it wasn't, kind of too wet. I was bummed. I got about 9 pieces for $20. The lady helping me was really nice. The store is really small! But very organized and appealing with all the prepackaged desserts.
google avatar

Yelp
I love discovering new bakeries in my area, and my sister had been raving about this place for a while. Totally see why. Their pastries hit!! They have such a wide array of Persian and French pastries and cakes. They aren't too overwhelmingly sweet and the textures are on point. I tried the Pistachio Baklava, Chocolate Roll Cake, Napolean, and the Cone pastry. They're all pretty light and airy, and I appreciated how flaky the Napolean and Baklava were. I will say -- the pastries and cakes here are on the more expensive side, especially compared to most Asian bakeries. But if you're looking for something a little different, this is a great option to stop by for some small little desserts.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
This place has delicious desserts and cakes. My son loves their fresh fruit cake made with whipped cream instead of buttercream. It tastes very light and not too sweet. You can order ahead birthday cakes with your choice of fruit filling.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We bought some halva From this bakery for my grandma's funeral, And they gave us an old and nasty product. When I called to Inform them, they were very rude and unprofessional. They told me the reason the Halvas were old is because we did not place the order before hand, and they only had their left over, When I ask for credit, they said I have to bring the halvas, so they can count to see how many of them has been eaten. When I ask to talk to the manager, they said they don't have a manager and there is an owner and the owner is not taking any call for complaints.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Only came here to do a catering order of baklava. Our guests loved it! Order was ready on time for pick up and reasonably priced compared to other bakeries I explored.
google avatar

Jasmine H.

Yelp
They made me the best birthday cake with a last minute notice. Best bakery ever!! All their pastries taste great too. Can't recommend enough
google avatar

Reese J.

Yelp
I love this place! It's in the Marketplace in Irvine so there is plenty of parking. I usually can get a parking spot right up front. They have a variety of goodies to choose from. Our family faves are the cream puffs, eclairs and napoleons. Their prices are very competitive and their customer service is always awesome! The bakery is always clean and tidy and very organized. It can get crowded on busy days but waiting outside isn't a deal breaker.
google avatar

Imran K.

Yelp
Ordered a cake from Assal Bakery. The cakes here are delecious. There will be no left overs. They are filled with tiny pieces of nuts. Amazing awesome and super delecious. The staff are very friendly and parking is plenty. Cost effective prices. Love these for the holidays.
google avatar

Ellice W.

Yelp
Wow an overwhelming number of fresh desserts and pastries to choose from. The staff were helpful and offered suggestions. The napoleon cake is a must get - flaky pastry, not too sweet, and the perfect amount of pastry cream - and the baklava was *chefs kiss*.
google avatar

Karmen F.

Yelp
This pastry shop is a gem in Southern California, as such establishments are not commonly found in the area. They bake their goods a few times a week, meaning that depending on the day you visit, you might snag a fresher pastry than others. While the quality of the pastries is generally good or average, I found the prices to be exceptionally high, even as a Persian customer. However, they offer lovely packages for taking items to someone's house or as gifts, showcasing their variety of options.
google avatar

Yvon T.

Yelp
I always have to stop by here whenever I'm eating in the plaza! The napoleon and the tiramisu are my favorite items at this bakery. The prices and service are always good and the parking is pretty easy in a big plaza!
google avatar

Shaxlo A.

Yelp
Yesterday I go Bad bakery store I buy sumano expensive and look at this picture. How can you eating this one?
google avatar

Mike a.

Yelp
This hurts me more than anyone else. I have been a loyal customer for now decades and it is hurting to see a pastry shop losing quality so much so that I regret to go back to them again.
google avatar

Carmen L.

Yelp
Tried the pineapple banana cake and it's very moist and not overly sweet. Denser than I thought but it's still very good.
google avatar

Khoi H.

Yelp
I was craving some baklava and wanted to try some new desserts as well. My friend and I were in Irvine already so we decided to check out Assal. Assal is a Persian & French bakery located in Irvine serving up Baklava along with other Persian and French desserts. There's a large selection available and everything is made without artificial sweeteners. I got the Walnut, Pistachio, and Almond Baklava and it was delicious. Probably some of the best Baklava I've had in the United States. I'll be back!
google avatar

Cindy G.

Yelp
dropped in for a quick snack before my eyebrow appointment and oh man, what a beautiful shop! the lady working there was super sweet. greeted me so kindly as i hangrily drooled at all the gorgeous pastries. i picked a pistachio roll and pistachio baklava. she packed them ever so gently. could tell that she really took pride in her product. i immediately scarfed down both in my car and they both tasted EXPENSIVE! hahaha just kidding, they were reasonably priced but you could really taste the quality. would def recommend!
google avatar

Nathan N.

Yelp
This place is the third place where I have tried the baklava and was hooked. For years, I went without trying authentically made baklava. Do yourself a favor and pick up a box of baklava from here. The quality is there, not too sweet but still very sweet. The nutty flavor of pistachio, walnut, or almond baklava is well worth it. Nutty, rich, gooey, flakey -- each chew delivers a diverse and appealing texture. Magnificent baklava. I remembered at some point during COVID, we had to wait outside in line to honor social distancing. No problem. Well worth the wait. I also had a Napoleon for the first time here. I think it also known as a millefeuille in the baking world. Delicious use of flaky pastry and sweet cream. Sometimes cream can feel pointless and burdensome. Not with the Napoleon. Try the Napoleon if you have a major sweet tooth like I do.

Sarah J.

Yelp
This place is apparently only for Persians if you are not then you get yelled at and be treated like a less than a human. I was looking for a cake for my daughters birthday, reading the good reviews on here I went here to get a cake and I was standing in line. A lady who worked here saw me repeatedly yelled/screamed at me "what do you want?". I said I want to buy a cake and she said "no, we don't have that!" When I saw cakes in front of my eyes. She continued to yell at me in front of the line of people and she was very nice to all the other customers. I was degraded and humiliated for trying to buy a cake at this place as a non Persian. What a ridiculously racist place this place is!

Brandie L.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting I just got food poisoning here.!! All the cakes taste the same - no flavor. I was brought here by someone else and would never choose to come here. 5 hours later I'm still sick after only a couple bites of cake- the staff attitudes are rotten as well!! Bad cakes and attitudes My tiramisu was under cooked! got food poisoning here
google avatar

Kenx S.

Yelp
What I like about this pastry shop is unlike other Middle Eastern bake shops, their pastries are not too sweet. They are not dripping with honey and therefore too sticky. The sweetness of their baklavas is perfect. I just wish they had more varieties. Service was efficient and friendly.
google avatar

Carlito S.

Yelp
Hey guys this place has my favorite desserts from baclava to fruit tarts. Assal Pastry products was not too sweet and the rolls were moist and creamy.
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
I spotted this place last week, and it was first time ever going into a Persian bakery. So I decided to try a little bit of everything. All of the things I tried were good, but here's a list of my favorites. Favourites: The almond cookies are amazing. Not overly sweet like most American cookies, and they go perfectly with tea. Picked up a half pound last time, had to get a full pound today. I also love the cream cones, pistachio napoleon and cream puffs (perfectly flakey and the crème is not too rich and heavy. Very good..) Roll cakes (perfectly moist, flavors were perfectly balanced, and not too sweet). I have not tried their baklava, yet, as I am so loyal to my baklava and knafe spot in Anaheim, but I might give it a try someday. The service is good- the owner is gracious and friendly. & they are super quick, too. I was in and out with all of my favourites in less than five minutes. This is my Second time here, and I will be back for more delicious pastries.
google avatar

Jessie N.

Yelp
I've only tied the log cake, but holy mole!! It's sooo good! Perfectly moist and not overly sweet. The cream and came ratio was perfect. I loved the hardened drizzled chocolate and crumbled pistachio. I can't wait to go back and try more items. Note: none
google avatar

Jenn Z.

Yelp
Was craving baklava and found this little gem on Yelp. Upon walking in, I wish I was greater with a little more warmth & given more info as it was my first time there & was hoping to learn more about their specialties etc. I just grabbed a few pistachio baklavas and left. They were delicious! $3.50 per large pistachio baklava

Peggy H.

Yelp
Excellent baklava. Tried the walnut and pistachio and both were delicious, but I especially enjoyed the pistachio.
google avatar

Lizelle P.

Yelp
Came here at a recommendation of a friend and so glad that I did. This was quite a popular spot for Arabian sweet delicacies. Got a few different items to taste and will definitely be back for their white sponge cake topped with fruit which seems to be a hot favorite. The staff were incredibly polite and friendly. They answered all our questions even though they were busy. Will be back!
google avatar

Brenda H.

Yelp
The pastry case here is amazing, so beautiful. They sell their slices of cake and cookies by the pound. Prices are pretty reasonable. I tried several flavors of cookies including the almond, jam cookies and the raisin cookies. The raisin was my favorite but the cookies had these flavor in them that i cant put my finger on but the flavor was very prominent and not as pleasant as vanilla. All of the cookies had this flavor and i wasnt sure that i liked it.
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
Only 2-3 ppl in at a time, so mom and I felt safe visiting. We marveled at how pretty the pastries were here and it even tasted good too! No wonder there's always a long line! We got their Tiramisu cups, fruit tarts, and the decadent chocolate cake. There was one I can't figure out the name, they wrapped it up really nice, but I didn't really care for it. It's the one that I added the photo of that came without jellies. I remember Grandma and Grandpa always having those around and I'd only eat the part without the jelly, lol.
google avatar

Sofia A.

Yelp
The pastries that are authentic (Persian) are great but if you go for tiramisu, it's overpriced for what it is. Nothing special. Cookies though...next level
google avatar

Nhu-y P.

Yelp
I actually like the cream puffs more than the Neapolitan :) The Neapolitan is still sweet for me but my husband thinks the cream is special :)
google avatar

S I.

Yelp
Returned to Assal Pastry this week and purchased several eclairs for dessert. Both eclairs were delicious! The vanilla custard filling was fresh, sweet and flavorful, and the chocolate on the top of the eclairs tasted wonderful. I wish I had purchased more! The two ladies at the front counter were very friendly, thoughtful and hard-working - thank you very much to both of them, too.

Bruce A.

Yelp
The staff are rude and snobbish. Don't know how the owner can keep people like these on the payroll, maybe they are family members. Pastries all taste the same but look different. Way overpriced. I will not go back again.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
Lady at the front - Please smile and greet, it was 8:30 on a Saturday with no rush. Also, not everyone is a repeat customer and may not know your store and products. Help them. Be courteous. No more visits to this place. The bakery goods were ok. Nothing spectacular.
google avatar

Celia C.

Yelp
Stopped by as I was next door for a vet visit. Got the Napoleon and pistachio roll. WOW! So good and was surprised at the price. The cream was so fresh, fragrant and not too sweet. Will definitely come back for some cakes.
google avatar

Ailin D.

Yelp
I found a nail in my pastry I am so upset and disgusted it's obvious they don't take cleanliness seriously in this shop the owners are also very rude and didn't care when I told them about what I found in there product they said there's nothing they can do
google avatar

Daphne L.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our visit here to the bakery. There is always a line and it's because their sweets/pastries are delicious! We got the tiramisu, baklava, and lady fingers. All were surprisingly delish! We highly recommend! This plaza parking can be hard during busy days but we usually find parking. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Pearl T.

Yelp
This place smells so good when you walk in and looks so cute and clean. Based on other reviews, I had to try the Napoleon. I've never had a Napoleon in my life and now I have found a new obsession. So flakey and creamy and delectable! My son opted for the eclair which he enjoyed. I also got two pieces of the Zoolbia, which I typically get from Wholesome Choice before I knew about this shop. I think the quality of the zoolbia here might be a bit better than Wholesome Choice. They sell their pastries and cookies by the weight. My order came out to $8.68 for the four pieces. I'll be coming back for the Napoleon and will probably try some of their other roll cakes that look really yummy. The lady working was very sweet as well.
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
DELICIOUS COOKIES! I love Assal. I come on Sundays with my family for essentially all the cookies. Ok, I usually hate cookies, but Assal's cookies will literally melt in your mouth, and they're small so you don't feel guilty about eating so many :) I highly recommend the following: _RAISIN COOKIES! _Rice cookies _Ginger cookies _Apricot/strawberry jam cookies _Hadj badomi The only reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because the staff can be a litttttle slow. Because this place gets busy, you may have to wait 15-20 min to get your pastries.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
So many beautiful and delicious desserts! The owners are so nice, friendly and helpful. I friend recommended this shop and I wanted to visit because I love a good baklava. We chose a few treats to try. The pistachio baklava was delicious!! Flaky, chewy, filled with pistachio and not overly sweet. I'm definitely returning to try more!!
google avatar

Christine J.

Yelp
Love this place and the small family run bakery vibe. This place has been around since I was a kid and my parents would always bring pastries home from Assal on the weekends. They're consistent in their taste and flavor and everything is always fresh. I like how they have a large variety for such a small space. They limit the number of people inside due to COVID and allow you to view the menu to avoid waiting inside and take up space. Everyone is required to wear a mask and/or is wearing a mask. Plenty of parking and the staff is friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
I just got back from Turkey and had a craving forBaklava, searched under Turkish Bakery and this place showed up I was so happy and looked forward to meeting some friendly people and tasting some delicious Baklava. The first red flag was the hostile clerk kinda rude and not helpful the 2nd red flag was that the baklava was horrible, never ever going back.
google avatar

Jamie N.

Yelp
I was in the area to pick up lunch, but I had some time to spare before it was actually ready for pick up. Decided to give into my sweet tooth craving and pick up a few items here! The bakery was open during COVID with proper measures in place - dividers, distanced waiting areas and gloves/masks all around. When you walk in, there's baked goodies to your right and then cakes and mini desserts in the fridge to your left. I browsed my options. I knew I wanted a tiramisu and saw one of them in the display case with a missing strawberry, so I was like, I hope they don't give me that one lol With a short window to grab something (and on an empty stomach), I chose three items: Tiramisu, Napoleon and Fruit Tart. I watched the lady select each item and she totally picked the tiramisu without the strawberry perfectly placed on top. I didn't say anything, but it did irk me that there were perfectly 6 other tiramisu cups that didn't have that issue. Like why? Anyway, the total was $15.87. I left kinda confused how that happened. There are no prices on the display window so I really didn't know what I was getting into, but found out later it was determined by weight. Oh womp, impulse buy got me good today haha. At least they packaged it up nicely with a ribbon and all. I noticed there was a disclaimer that they don't use preservatives, so it's recommended that they be refrigerated immediately and consumed with 48 hours. The Napoleon really hit the spot, but the powdered sugar on top was a bit too much for me. It made it really sweet. The custard was delicious and the layers were crisp in some areas. The tiramisu is a classic fave and I'll keep you updated on the fruit tart.
google avatar

Nay F.

Yelp
You can't go wrong if your craving some baklava or some mini fruit tarts (oh they have more than just those little goodies) so if your having a sweet tooth attack for some Persian goodness give them a try..so good!

Nachiket S.

Yelp
I first called to check if they could order a cake for the next day and the woman who picked up the phone was nice. I called 15 minutes later and this woman was extremely rude. "We need 2-3 days notice", when I told her about my previous call she asked me what I wanted to order. I went through a list of options and answer was "no we don't do that". I don't care if you can't make something on a short notice don't be a jerk a about it.
google avatar

Albert L.

Yelp
A real hidden gem in Irvine, Assal Pastry does French and Persian pastries very good. They are located in the same plaza as Boiling Point and across from Mitsuwa (the back entrance), I've passed by this shop many times and I'm glad I decided to give it a try a few years ago. The best I can describe their pastries is that their cream/sweetness is very similiar to Asian cakes/pastries (think 85c, Sunmerry, etc); light and not overly sweet. The good: 1. Napoleon Cake - The cake has layers of creamy goodness and flaky puff pastry. I really love their take on this! 2. Pistachio Roulette - The cream is very light and I love the touch of Pistachio sprinkled on the cream. I get this every time I go! 3. Chocolate layer - Good bite size cake when you are feeling guilty about eating sweets. 4. White layer - Good bite size cake when you are feeling guilty about eating sweets but with cream instead of chocolate :D The Alright 1. Chocolate Eclair - I'm not the biggest fan of chocolate but I did enjoy this!
google avatar

Haleh H.

Yelp
Delicious quality pastry! I've had many of their mini pastries, sooo good. It's fresh and yum, sweet but not too sweet. Perfect! I also tried their custard pirashki, YUM! I love pirashki and I can't find it anywhere in Bay Area. I bought five and ate over the past few days. Even the last one after 4 days still tasted so good. They has a good balance of dough and custard; not too much dough and not as oily as one I had in LA. Will definitely go back to get more of those!

Yelp
O..o..O..o..O..oXo..O..o..O..o..O | | | -:: OVERALL RATING ::- | | | | 4.0/5.0 :: Venue | | 4.0/5.0 :: Service | | 4.0/5.0 :: Take-Out | | 4.5/5.0 :: Desserts | |________________________ | Open during Covid-19 outbreak! Cannot go in the bakery, so you order at the entrance. If you haven't been here before & am not sure what they have - check out their website. =:-:= VENUE =:-:= Located in the Heritage Plaza by Dominos & where Buffalo Wild Wings resides. Parking used to be somewhat of a pain prior to the pandemic + some people friggin don't know how to park within the lines. The bakery is clean within & of simple decors. Decorated all around are a plethora of sweets & plates of cookies all wrapped up and ready to go. =:-:= SERVICE/TAKE-OUT =:-:= The experiences I've had with encountering the bakery staff to order varied from time to time. Despite the fact they don't always appear to be super friendly but the overall service was decent. My most recent visit was actually better than the experiences I've had before... perhaps cuz of the pandemic in place?? =:-:= DESSERTS =:-:= I've been visiting Assal Pastry for the past 6 years. I love their pastries & the fact they have minis. Not only are they cute, great as gifts or bring to events or for those trying to watch their portioning & sugar intake! These pastries are not super sweet nor heavy but on a moist & lighter end. I have had their cookies as well & it is pretty good too. But their pastries wins my heart. All pastries are sold by the pound starting at $14/lb. So with my recent purchase a week ago - for a box w/ 2 napoleons, 2 pistachio rolls, 1 cone & 1 tiramisu cost was $17. Prices are decent & these sweets are worth it! Yelp
I am sad that I just learned of this place! It's a tiny bakery but the quality is so good. I had a great experience buying a box of pastries and cookies there last week. The lady helping me was so patient and sweet, especially to my two young children. Delicious treats, especially the baklava and eclairs! Definitely recommend Assal bakery
