I ate here today for lunch with my girl. We decide to try some of seafood dishes, so we ordered the shrimp po'boy from Great Lakes Diner, the lobster mac and cheese from the point, and the fish tacos from Charo's. We also tried the 1700 juice from Gigi. First, it's funny how a lot of the new food halls popping up around the area, and nationwide, provide the false impression that each stall is it's own unique entity when it reality they're all owned and operated by the same company, just with different themes and menus. That's obviously the case here at the Assembly. One of the things that tipped me off is that all the food we tried was mediocre or sub par, at best. The fish tacos lacked seasoning and were a pretty small portion for the price. They were served with too much meh flavored tomatillo salsa and cabbage slaw to cover the fact that you get a tiny piece of fish. However, I did appreciate that it was served on a freshly made tortilla. The side salad that came with it was dressed in the most boring, tasteless dressing known to man - it was probably just vegetable oil and a spritz of lemon. The shrimp po' boy was our favorite for its nicely seasoned crispy shrimp with roasted geflickt mayo sauce. But it should be called the poorest boy because it was more of a shrimp roll than a tradition sandwich since it was served on a Hot Dog bun instead of a sub/hero sandwich bread. It also came with 5 measly shrimp. The fries it came with were great, I must say.
Now here comes the biggest, and priciest, disappoint : the lobster mac and cheese. First, I'll mention what we did like about the dish, which was that it was made with cavatappi pasta - the undisputed king of pasta for Mac and cheese ,in our opinion. Now the bad, the dish just lacked flavor and seasoning . This was largely because it was made using a Béchamel sauce which wasn't fortified with good cheeses. Often time, restaurants will use Béchamels, which are essentially a white gravy, to save money so that they don't have to buy expensive, flavorful, cheeses like a smoked Gouda or Gruyère. That's obviously what the Point was aiming for. It tasted of white paste with a mild seafood flavor from the lobster. Just avoid that dish in general.
I will say that the service is great. Everyone was super friendly and the food was delivered quickly.
I will likely give this place another chance and try some of the other stalls. It's a welcome addition to the neighborhood, but they need to step up their game to compete with some of the mom and pop places nearby.
