I’ve been going to Astor Place Hair for many years, and get great hair styles and color, that I’m very happy with. Astor Place has maintained its eclectic character, with a variety of stylists and customers, which is salt of the earth, NYC. So much more interesting than chic salons. But remember, cash only. I recommend the stylist, Irma, she’s always upbeat, friendly and is very skilled. She consistently gives a great cut and blow dry that really lasts. She does beautiful color, and when I get my hair highlighted by her, she’s very meticulous, and I receive many compliments. Like with all hairstylists, you must communicate what you want clearly before starting, pictures are a good guide. One drawback are the uncomfortable chairs where you get your hair washed, and also it would be nice if there was some kind of refreshments. Atmosphere wise, It’s not a high end beauty salon, but you do get lovely quality hair services, and I’m glad to have found Irma.

My stylist is Suzy. She is Greek. I've been getting her to cut, color and highlight my hair for a long time and the results have always exceeded my expectations. She can work with all hair types, so I would recommend her for Asians too. All of the stylists at this salon are highly experienced, and although most of the customers are older, the stylists' techniques are by no means outdated, so it is recommended for younger people as well.

From the moment you walk into Astor Place Hair House, you’re treated with genuine warmth, professionalism, and care. The entire team goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable, valued, and truly heard. Every visit is more than just an appointment—it’s a full experience of feeling pampered, understood, and cared for. Ashley and Marissa are nothing short of incredible. They’re not only experts, but true pioneers in their field—combining deep knowledge with an artistic eye and a personal touch that makes all the difference. They take the time to listen closely, understand your needs, and deliver results that not only meet but exceed expectations. I always leave feeling beautiful, confident, and truly seen. The entire staff is warm, welcoming, and professional, especially Emma. They create an atmosphere where you can relax and know you’re in the best hands. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, they make you feel like a priority. I can’t recommend Astor Place enough—it’s a place where expertise meets heart, and where every client feels special.

I’m a repeat customer of Irma’s and I highly recommend her! Her haircuts are absolute perfection and I’m always thrilled with the outcome when she colors my hair. I couldn’t be happier with her services.

I’ve been going to Irma at Astor Place Hairstylists for years and she never misses! Every time I bring her a photo or an idea, she brings it to life exactly how I imagined—sometimes even better. She truly listens, knows what works for my hair, and always makes me feel confident walking out of her chair. Irma is consistent, talented, and simply the best. I wouldn’t trust my hair with anyone else!

Google
This place has been here for over 40 years and per the stories of the amazing barbers that work there it used to have more floors then the current basement it occupies. I often walk in and just get whoever and the cut is great but if available I'm a fan of Suzy, she just is great and takes her time to fix you up right.

Google
Astor Place Hair is a New York institution! But besides being a unique place with a long history, it's also a place with very experienced hairdressers who offer their skills at great prices. I've been going to Irma for my highlights and cuts and I'm very happy with her approach and technique. She's an expert colorist--highly recommended! Thank you Irma!

I’ve been going to this place for about three years, and while I’ve had some good experiences, they’ve been heavily outweighed by the bad ones. Many of the workers don’t listen to what you want. They’re more focused on rushing through each cut than actually taking pride in their work or making sure you leave looking your best. In my most recent visit, the stylist carelessly cut off a large section of hair from the front and without consulting me about it, he took it upon himself to cut the rest of my hair extremely short. His failed recovery left his mistakes more visible than they were initially and I ended up leaving looking like a botched poodle. There have been countless other times where i’ve left this place looking like i had been experimented on by cosmetology students and this was my last straw. It’s disappointing to see such a lack of care and professionalism, especially after giving them multiple chances over the years. If you do choose to go here, make sure you have a good hat cause you’ll need it for a few weeks after.

Yelp
Recommend guys get their hair cut at Astor Place, even if you're just in the city visiting. The people at this place know their stuff! Coming here since the late '90s when they also had a part of the store at street level. While it's now all underground and my regular guy having retired a couple years ago, I continue to go back. Understand Astor Place prices have creeped up to keep things going when many started to cut their own hair during the pandemic, however it remains a classic keeping absolutely fair prices. Plus, important: I always get complemented after a fresh Astor Place cut!

Kenneth H.

Yelp
Edward has kept me looking sharp for many years now. Great guy and sends me a reminder when I'm overdue - which I need!

Yelp
My favorite place to go for a haircut. They all do a great job on my hair. There's no wait time for a chair.
google avatar

Demos I.

Yelp
Old school haircut just what you want. Ask for Scott. Everybody knows how to cut hair there, though.
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Great expert hair cut her from talented barbers. No longer the cheapest around at $30 for a walk-in but since the pandemic that price is pretty standard amongst the places that used to charge a whole lot less! I was surprised when my wife said it was clearly the best haircut I have had in years!

K G.

Yelp
IRMA is terrific. I came in knowing exactly what I wanted. Irma listened to me, had suggestions and came up with a plan and got right to work. She cares about her craft and making the customer happy. It's the first time in a long time that I walked out the door of a salon feeling really good about my hair. She's a master at color ( I got platinum highlights and darker low lights) and gave me an excellent cut (longer shag). I am very critical and picky when it comes to my hair. Irma is a pro.

Dora K.

Yelp
Irma gave me the most beautiful blonde highlights and a great cut. She was sweet, listened to what I wanted. I could not be happier with the service I received. Highly recommend her if you want beautiful color at an affordable price. Thank you!

Yelp
It's my second time there and I love it. Go to the guy behind the cash register, on the left side. Can't missing. Been there for 40 years. Great hear cuts.

Yelp
Get your cut from Regina (first chair immediately to the right as you walk in)!!! I have been loyal to Regina for years and she gets it right every time. I've come to her with lots of different styles and ideas and I always leave with exactly what I want, and feeling great. I always look forward to catching up with her, and I know she has the same great relationship with all her clients. I've sent many of my friends to her too and they have all loved her work and have come back to her on their own. If you're getting your haircut anywhere or from anyone else in NYC, you're missing out!

Tony D.

Yelp
I have been going to Astor Place for my entire adult life and I wouldn't think of trusting my hair to anyone but Regina! In fact, my wife liked the way Regina cut my hair so much that now she goes to Regina too! She is with out a doubt the best. A pure genius!

Yelp
I have been to salons where I was charged hundreds of dollars, leaving not very satisfied with my haircut, or with the service. When I first came to NYC with limited funds, I used to go to Astor Place hairstylists. I decided to give it a try again. It was my great fortune that REGINA was the only stylist free when I walked in. She is the best!!! She listens to what I want and tells me if it will work and gives suggestions. I have been to her a few times and always leave happy and feeling sassy. I highly recommend Astor Place Hairstylists, and very highly recommend REGINA!!!!!! She has a client for life in me.

Yelp
Moved to the area recently. It was my birthday and my kids wanted their hair cut so we went. I decided at the last minute to get a blowout as well. Quick, professional, and made me feel special. Kids loved their cuts as well. Can't beat the price! Thank you!!

Yelp
In a world satisfied with drive-by haircuts courtesy of Great Clips and Super Cuts, Astor Hairstylists aka Astor Barber is a NYC institution for all the right reasons. No matter who you get, these are pros who know their way around a head, listen to what you want and execute flawlessly. And did I mention, they don't charge a fortune and pay attention to the details that make for a nice finish. Astor is busy, looking and sounding like a madhouse. Don't be put off. They've been around forever and deserve to be. Your head will thank you, as will your mirror. An easy five stars.

Andres R.

Yelp
Wanted a trim instead I Got 6 months of hair growth chopped off . Unfortunately, barbers can't follow a simple request and just follow the trendy and their own rules to a default . If you have long hair , the reviews are constant . Stay away from them , look away . This isn't the barbershop for you . I will not be returning.

Randall K.

Yelp
The price has gone up to $30 plus tip for a haircut, but it's a classic NYC institution. Regina always gives me the best haircut and I recommend her highly! She's to the right after you go downstairs. Don't forget to bring cash...

Laura Hadley P.

Yelp
I have right now literally the best cut I've ever had in my life from Regina at Astor Barber. She is so good, I think she could cut hair blindfolded and it would still be perfect. Her skill and experience are kind of breathtaking--I gave her one or two words about what kind of look I was going for, and she made it exactly what I wanted. I would recommend her to anyone.

Marina D.

Yelp
I won't lie. I wasn't happy with my cut. It wasn't at all what I wanted. Especially the bangs. But I should have been more specific and spoke up when I saw that they were getting too far away from what I wanted. I wish I would've reminded the hairstylyst or confirmed what I wanted out of the pictures I showed. Luckily when my hair dried naturally after I wet it, and I put the bangs back with moose it was a lot better. And now the bangs naturally go back anyways still! The cut is growing on me and it's only been a day so thats a good sign! Im giving 2 stars for the words "Could've Beeen Better". ALWAYS check with your client about what they want. Ask to see the photos over and over again. Ask "is this okay? This is what Im gonna do. Or would this be too short?" DONT GO FOR RISKIER especially when its someone with such long hair. That being said, love the low prices and my hairstylyst was very sweet. Just please constnatly check in with your clients during the haircut in the future!

Ya B.

Yelp
Studio quality haircuts for a very reasonable price. Great atmosphere inside as well that perfectly fits the NYC vibe.

Jung U.

Yelp
Haircut experience was solid, results were average maybe less for the cost, was cash only, not bad but definitely found better within 10 minutes walking.

Ari G.

Yelp
Got my hair done by irma today. She did exactly what I wanted and was so sweet. I loved my experience here and will be back. This haircut was much better than other haircuts I have gotten in the city AND at a better price point. So happy!

Yelp
On a whim I tried Regina for a cut and blow dry - She is a wizard - great layered bob, the best cut I have had in years! I've sent several friends to her as well, and they all agree.
google avatar

Dina D.

Yelp
Took my nephew for a shave and hair trim, Speedy was his barber. We noticed the cut was awful, very uneven in the back and went back to a kind man who fixed it at Astor. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Nisha S.

Yelp
This is not the place you go to with a picture and ask for a copy and save a few bucks from some fancy place, don't insult these guys, this is a New York institution. I have been going to Regina for years now, my sister and mom also go to her. I actually found her on this page and always noticed a waiting line for her. She has been cutting hair for over 28 years at this location, she is a master in her field, I wish there was a Regina in the makeup field that I knew. She gave me a brand new cut yesterday and I loveee it. She knows what you need, what lines, what needs clean up, and gets to it.
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
The worst haircut ever. I made the mistake of also getting a mild relaxer for my curls and whatever she used, burned my hair. Thanks a lot Suzy I'll be wearing a hat for the next couple of months. Unbelievable!!!

James J.

Yelp
I have curly hair. I went for a haircut and asked the guy sending people to the chairs if there was someone available who could cut curly hair. They said "yeah sure go to that guy" and "that guy" also promised they could cut curly hair. They could not. I asked for two things, 1. Even out my hair and 2. Please trim my bangs. My hair might be even, idk, this is what I pay "professionals" for. My bangs are most certainly uneven, the hair comes down below my eyebrow on my left side and ends at my eyebrow on my right side. The whole cut felt too short but I can excuse that since I hate cutting my hair. But I asked for someone who could cut curly hair, trim my bangs, and even it out and got none of those.

Yelp
This has been a favorite spot for years. Truly a West Village mainstay, with a core group of barbers who have been there seemingly forever, and new ones who keep popping up. Cash only, but the cuts are so reasonable it's not a burden. Go on a weekend evening and join in with the karaoke singing!

Andrew K.

Yelp
Atmosphere and decor is great but I can't say the same about the haircut. I needed a clean trim and even after I showed a picture of exactly what I was hoping for, the barber started chipping at my hair with no precision. Just made it damp and lumped it together, then proceeded to wing it with no care, not even being slow/careful around my ear. After three minutes of that, I knew it wouldn't end well so I politely called it quits and said I was good. Got charged THIRTY dollars. I respect the industry and I'd pay double for a great haircut but $30 for 3 minutes of what my barber did is something else. Thankfully i listened to my gut and was able to get what I wanted when we drove back home. Nice looking shop but the service didn't live up to it.
google avatar

Peggy O.

Yelp
My son desperately needed a haircut and beard trim. We didn't need an appointment but were able to just walk in upon arrival. Luigi did a fantastic job; did just what my son asked. They have a great Covid set up - all the employees were wearing masks. Highly recommend this great place.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Read about this place online and went in. Big Mike not only set me up with Ines for a haircut, he showed up his collection of art he painted. I was very pleased with my hair and the whole cool experience! Thanks Mike and Ines!

Jennifer A.

Yelp
I asked for a haircut with long layers and Regina nailed it. Best price you will find for a ladies cut. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Heng L.

Yelp
This is for the rudest hair stylist that I've ever met. First time that I was literally pushed back and forth in a rotate chair while he's standing still; Used the shaver in a way opposite to gentleness and without any patience. Was told "you are good to go" without bothering to ask if you need wash / blow and replied bluntly "you didn't ask". When asking about the restroom, was told "pay first and then use the restroom". I believe this is a renowned barber shop in east village and this experience doesn't represent other stylists working there. However I felt I had to leave this because of the extremely frustrating experience I had today.
google avatar

Yelp
Regina is hands down the best in the hair game!!‍ I came in with a botched cut from another salon practically in tears, thinking I was going to have to cut off all of my hair. Regina literally saved my do!! She was able to turn a complete disaster into a amazing and and fun haircut I can easily manage and style on my own!! Dont walk, RUN to see Regina!!
google avatar

Azam K.

Yelp
This is a barbershop. The type of place where you build a relationship with your barber and don't want to go anywhere else. Yes, they have lots of customers and its a packed house, but that's because the price is right and the cuts are pretty darn great. Fades have been on point here every time and you'll have fun conversations with your barber throughout if you want. I'd recommend trying out Astor place. Cheaper than most places, but the quality is still really, really great.
google avatar

Taj A.

Yelp
Yury is a good barber, but he gets mad when you dont tip him 10 plus dollars and also gets annoyed when you come in the middle of day and not early because my beard and shave takes time. He also gets mad if you shave your own beard and trim your hair at home and dont have time to show up for a month plus. He eventually stopped picking and responding to texts. I stopped going there all together. Queens to manhattan was more than enough, but then having to deal with a rude barber was too much. 40 to 50 dollars with tip for buzz cut, beard trim and shave. 35 dollars with buzz cut and beqrd trim....queens is 30 bucks with shave, and much better professionalism.
google avatar

Jin K.

Yelp
Props to anyone who was able to get a decent haircut. This place is a factory, looks like 60+ barbers chopping their way through 100s of cuts a day. They massacred my hair. Quickest haircut with a severe lack of attention to detail. I am sure there are diamond barbers in the rough, but I was not willing to chance it again. Buyer beware, you get what you pay for...
google avatar

Brandon L.

Yelp
If you want your neck to look like someone took a mower to it then you should probably stop by this Barber shop. I could cut my hair better with my feet than how Joel did it. He was very agressive. His fast and aggressive movements drove the scissors into my scalp several times. He topped it off by scraping the dry razor across my neck causing it bleed and razor burn that lasted several days. There are better places in NYC. Don't waste your time.
google avatar

Yelp
Let me start of with the fact that I have little to know hair, I essentially have a buzz cut and I got charged 70 $ to bleach my hair. Irma was going to charge me 80$ but she kindly brought down the price. I have never bleached my hair so I wanted to go get it done professionally because I didn't want to get burned. I ended up getting burned anyway !! She even tried telling me that it was a birth mark. I kept telling her it burned and it was itchy but she said it was normal, so I stayed quite. So we finished the bleaching process and we clean out the bleach and she gets my half of my back wet. It's was about 32 degrees and windy in NY that day so I left cold. She brings me back to her section and she dryed my head and adds some product. I was confused be cause the photo I showed her was a light grey and she gave me a very light blonde. She said she couldn't let me go grey cause it would be to dark. I was confused cause she said I could go grey. She also missed my edges on one side of my face and the lower corner on the other half. I regret paying what I did. But I just paid anyway cause I didn't want a sense. 1. Burns 2. Wet back 3. Missed spots 4. Not what I wanted 5. Over charged Irma was super sweet though, very nice to me... we didn't really talk but she tried to make conversation.

Owen P.

Yelp
Irma gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had!!! Went for the first time today, and was a little nervous because I know this place is historically a barber. Was so pleasantly surprised. Irma gave me a fantastic woman's haircut and blowout for $50!! Unheard of pricing for downtown manhattan. I will 100% be returning and cannot recommend Irma enough!!!
google avatar

Deirdre L.

Yelp
My go to hairstylists whenever I need a cut. I have never gone to one specific stylist as I have found that they are all good, quick and efficient. It is definitely a no-frills place, but it's great!
google avatar

C M.

Yelp
I did my homework looking for quality on a budget, sounds like a difficult task but surprise! this place is a gem, the person that did my hair is very professional, her name is Narcy, she did a great haircut and blow dry, I left that salon feeling like a a movie star. After that first experience in July 2020 I have been 3 times more and she delivered every time. This is not a fancy place but the hairstylists are very experienced and the prices are unbeatable.

Yelp
I have been going to Astor Place for 3 years and have had a great experience every time. I always go to Jose, he is a great barber. He does a very good job every time and is a very fun person to speak to. I recommend him 100%.

yee h.

Yelp
Narcy is AMAZING! She's so sweet and so talented, I truly can't believe any bad reviews here about her, if there are any. She completely transformed my hair from a dull, light brown choppy bob with grown out roots to a BEAUTIFUL perfect black bob with purple underneath. I still can't believe this is my hair and she is my go-to stylist for good! GO TO NARCY IF YOU WANT AN AMAZING HAIR COLOUR AND HAIRCUT!

Rose W.

Yelp
I love Astor place as an institution, but it's important to mention that it really depends on which hairstylist you get. The main point of this review is to say-- steer clear of the hairstylist Bella. I've only had positive experiences at Astor place until today when she cut my hair. She is very warm and sweet, which is why I feel bad writing this review, but i feel it is important to warn people of what may happen when Bella cuts your hair. Bella will disregard your wishes in order to cut your hair how *she* feels is best. Today I ended up with really poorly done layers, when all I asked for was a simple trim. I'm a person who is anxious & unadventurous when it comes to haircuts. I have never requested layers or any other kind of styled hair. I was very simple in my request that I just wanted her to cut off a couple of inches. It was beyond upsetting to realize that she had made her own aesthetic choice for my hair-- one which I did not want or request-- without consulting me or even mentioning what she was doing. On top of that, she cut my hair far shorter than the trim I requested, and the layers (if that's what she was attempting) look terrible so now I have to spend more money to go somewhere else and get it fixed. I have a friend who had a bad Astor place experience, but I couldn't remember who it was that cut her hair. After this happened, I asked my friend if she remembered the name of the woman who butchered her hair. Turns out, it was the same hairstylist-- Bella. She is a really kind person but if she cuts your hair, make sure to give her the most explicit instructions possible or she will go off script and do whatever she wants to your hair. Such an incredibly frustrating and violating experience. Go to Astor place hair, but do not go to Bella. If you do go to Bella, just be careful and be very very very clear about what you want. Don't give her room to improvise without your permission.

Yelp
I've been coming here for six years now after a friend casually mentioned the place to me, for 18 bucks cash you just cannot beat this place. The stylists have been here for over a decade and Simon is absolutely the best.
google avatar

Kat D.

Yelp
This place is amazing! You can find a barber or a stylist for any gender and type of hair. Specifically: Joel - amazing with everything, especially funky styles and shaping Wayne - Black hair barber who blends like an angel Adam - Did an amazing job but annoyed me because he tried overcharging. But he did a great job so we worked it out. It all depends on who your barber is though, so see if you can ask around for a favorite.
google avatar

Deepika S.

Yelp
They are awesome! Quick, economical and adept at their work. Went for a haircut during the pandemic, they have a good system in place to protect clients and the employees.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Really? I've been coming here for a few years and I knew you were a sh*t hole. But your business is a WALK IN business. I walk in and wait. You provide SEATS. Oh, you forgot the part with the seats, you cheap a$$ motha fuc&@s.

Kate T.

Yelp
Irma has been doing my hair, cut and color, for three years now. She is the absolute best. She covers my roots seamlessly and her attention to detail is outstanding. I've had other hairdressers accidentally burn my scalp with the beach due to carelessness applying the mixture to my head. That has NEVER happened with Irma, in fact, I have never felt bleach touch my scalp at all and the results are the best I've ever had. Last year I chopped my hair off and have maintained shorter than shoulder length, light blonde hair. At first it was nerve-racking, but I have never, EVER walked away from Irma's chair not feeling completely beautiful and satisfied. Not to mention you get a high-end salon result with extremely reasonable pricing at Astor. It can't be beat. For ladies looking for affordable color and cut with professional salon results, go see Irma.

Alissa S.

Yelp
Astor Place Hair is a true NY treasure - been coming here since the 80s and it has kept all the old school NYC flavor in addition to housing the best barbers you will find anywhere. I went over 2 years without a cut until I could get back to Jose, he is magic with scissors & always leaves me feeling & looking great. Speedy is the master of the short cut and has serious charm. So many talented professionals in this shop, and Big Mike's art lights up the back rooms. Don't think I'll ever go elsewhere.

Yelp
AVOID AVOID AVOID! Went once and will never go again!!!! Word rather cut my own hair. I walked in and asked for a shape up. Guy a front desk said "Sure!" and sent me to barber in back. Shape up took 5 min. No blade just buzzer. SLOPPY! Cashier charged me 18. Guy at front desk said he's never heard of a shape up. HOW DOES A BARBER NOT KNOW WHAT A SHAPE UP IS AND WHY DID YOU SAY "SURE!" WHEN I ASKED FOR ONE! Still tipped barber. Not his fault his boss lives under a "barbers rock". Got to a real barber elsewhere. Plenty of other places in area. RIP OFF!!!!!
