13 Houston Restaurants Serving Stellar Central and South American Cuisine | Eater Houston

"Blink and you might miss this small Argentinian bakery, offering serve-yourself baked facturas (Argentine pastries) formed in unique shapes. Grab some tongs and see how many different breads and sweets you end up with in your basket. It’s best not to resist the sweet temptations behind the glass, featuring chocolate, custard, caramel, or cherries in various baked forms. Other craveable delights here are the empanadas, sandwiches, and Argentine coffee." - Christina Autry

Stopped here for a lunch break, wanted a latte with a snack and this spot served. The latte was perfect, smooth, and bold. The cheese and spinach empanada was warm, crispy, and delicious. There were lots of other pastries that looked delectable. Prices are also very reasonable, can’t beat a latte and pastry for under $10. I will definitely be coming back to this little hole in wall spot while I’m in the area.

Google
Nice little Argentinian style bakery in this stripe mall. If you were just driving back on the street you would not know this little hidden gem is here. The service is friendly and they have a good selection of sweets and other goods for sale here. I would not know about this place if I did not use the app TooGoodToGo and I have come back to try other goods they have here. The pastries all the way in the back is self serve.

Google
First time here and great experience my hey have a great coffee and pastry typical from Argentina. Also by the wall they sell products originally from Argentina. Some table to hang out and have a relax time. Clean place and nice crew. Prices cheaper than big famous chains. Very recommended

To be fair, I went right at the end for a closing so I just got what was left over and of course A pastry will be more dry at the end of the day. I got mil hojas slice and will try something different next time. The gentleman (owner) was pleasant but the server said she’ll hold what I picked out and when I paid I figured it was included in the bag but got home and it was only mail hojas and not the medialuna which I went there for, so that was a disappointment. I tipped her on a to-go order before getting home to see half my order was not in the bag.

If you are Brazilian and is missing the "pão francês" this is the right place to go. They have it and it is delicious. Great place. UPDATE: Nothing really to say, still love the place, would be nice to have more variety in the place but I am not sure if they are located in a place that allow this, don't believe too much people know the place. I keep being a huge fan of the , "pão francês" as we Brazilian know it (picture). I always purchase the Dulce de Leche, even though at this time they have none. Will return later this week for it. Good Job!!!

Yelp
I came to this hole-in-the-wall bakery on a busy Sunday morning. For around $6, I got a cafe con leche and warm beef empanada. Their empanada fillings include beef, chicken, and spinach/cheese. The beef empanada stuffing was delicious and surprisingly included some olive as well in the mix. In the short time I was there, quite a few customers walked out with boxes of pastries, which is always a good sign. Note that there is a minimum charge of around $5 to pay with card, otherwise cash is required. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for their Argentinian pastry fix in the area!

Yelp
My mom and I have been coming to Asturias Bakery for years, and it continues to be my favorite place to enjoy authentic Argentinian facturas and a delicious cappuccino. The quality is consistently excellent, and the customer service is always warm and welcoming. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a cozy spot with amazing pastries and friendly service!

Yelp
Love the food!! But I do think they need to work on their customer service. The girls need a smile more and be a little bit . The sandwiches are delicious and so is their coffee.

Yelp
You order at the counter and return dishes to the counter. Venezuelan bakery and store. Service is prompt and efficient. It's very quiet for breakfast.

Yelp
We came here with my family today 30 minutes before it closed. The cashier was not welcoming whatsoever. We were outside halfway eating on the tables and right at 7:00 pm she came outside to tell us we had to leave because it was closed. She said she could call the owners to tell us to get out. This isn't our first time here, we've been coming to this place for years. The same cashier has attended us before with the same attitude. She was extremely disrespectful with no regards to customer service. I spent over $100 in pastries and coffee. I'm from Argentina and I love this place, but I sincerely request the owners do something about the cashier before they start losing customers.

Daniela L.

Yelp
The place is very cozy, the service is ok, not very welcoming and there's no variety in the pastries, there were at most 5 desserts to choose from. Prices aren't bad.

Hernán G.

Yelp
Took a coffee and some "medialunas" and they were great! I will definitely go back.

Marisol C.

Yelp
This place prices are ridiculous! There is a price on the shelf but when you go to check out the price,it's different, and the excuse is that the price at the shelf was wrong... wait what!!!! That is against the law!!!!! If they have a price on the shelf, they have to honor it. The facturas are suuuuper small and the quality is horrible!!! Not to mention that the place is falling apart. But you think that this was all? No, they charge you an extra percentage if you pay with card. I'll never comeback, and of course I do NOT recommend this bakery at all!!! Go somewhere else and make your money count.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Cutest little Argentinian bakery! I'm telling you you cannot come here and NOT get a sandwich. It's so delicious and the bread is so light. And of course the pastries are just as good. Also sweetest people working.
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
Pastries taste like they were 2 days old, small an expensive. One of the girls looks like she didn't want to be there.
google avatar

Abril B.

Yelp
This is my go-to place when I'm craving foods that taste like home. Pastries are always fresh, although there is ONE ingredient (still don't know which) that makes them taste a little stronger that the ones you find back in bakery stores in Argentina. Cremonas, sandwichitos de miga, even the dulce de leche roll, they are all finger-licking good. Their empanadas and milanese sandwiches are otherworldly too. It is cute that they make coffees and lates from the typical Segafredo (or similar) machine, but the barista skills of the girls running the shop could use a some improvement. As this place is very small, like 5 or 6 tables max, i would recommend to order to-go. If you decide to visit them on a Sunday, remember that they run out of pastries around 11:30am! You can also call and reserve a dozen if you want to make sure they'll save some for you. Try them out for yourself!

Yelp
Nice little place on Dairy Ashford with very limited vegetarian options. I saw quite a few vegetarian options on their online yelp menu, but looks like its outdated. And the person at the counter had no idea what vegetarian means. The only savory thing they had without meat was the spinach and cheese empanada. But they were pretty good and so was the cappuccino. I loved the dulce de leche roll.
google avatar

Emily E.

Yelp
I have come to this bakery for a long time for the empanadas and they used to give you ample enough chimichurri. I notice the barely filled containers so I ask if we can have some more. I don't understand that if I am willing to pay for the extra container of the sauce, why can they not accommodate? The manager was right next to us and did not say a word about the matter. Not to mention the poor attitude the front counter lady had while trying to explain why they couldn't. She had mentioned if I eat here then I can have more so I repeated her and then went back to no I cannot have any more. I have to buy 2 more (I already bought a half dozen) in order to receive 1 more small less than 2 oz container. This is not the first time I have had poor service. Me and my family will NOT be coming here again.

Yelp
amazing facturas and great argentinian products . must visits this is definitely one of my favorites bakeries and coffee shops

Alyson P.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods as well as lunch items. Everything is good here. If you like Argentine food this is a must try!

Yelp
Absolutely loved this bakery! The selection of baked goods is not very large, however they are amazing! Love the Latin vibe inside the bakery!

Yelp
People who give this place less than the five stars it deserves just don't know enough about Argentine bakeries. It's not a place to buy bread or cakes. It's more of a cafe to nibble on sweets or simple savory baked items. That being said - you look for facturas (Argentine Danish pastries that taste the same but are in different shapes), empanadas (which are delicious here and better than the other Argentine bakery on Westheimer), sandwiches (which are oversized and good), and Italian coffee (Lavazza brand). And these are the things you typically find in Argentine bakeries in Argentina. Granted, it is not much to look at outside and it's not terribly pretty inside - but this place offers a lot for a bakery - and I dare say that they offer more than the other Argentine bakeries in town with their own market. And in Christmas time they even bake their own panettone breads. I'd advise anyone to stop here for light munchies and coffee with friends and to try their delectable empanadas.

Yelp
I had never heard of this bakery before visiting, but my plans to meet my sister at Marini's Original empanada house on a Sunday were thwarted by it being closed. I used the Yelp app on my phone to find Argentine Empanadas and discovered this bakery so we ventured out. The website wasn't working and no one answered when I called to confirm they were open, but we decided to try it anyway. It's in a tiny shopping center and easy to overlook if you aren't specifically looking for it but it was well worth the trip. They are open until 2 p.m. on Sundays. We ordered a dozen beef empanadas (some to take home) that were the way I like, flavorful and spiced with egg and olive inside. Nicely sized and so delicious. We also had Proscutto and cheese sandwiches that are made without crusts and you can get them either toasted or plain. You can order individual or just pick up a pack of sandwiches. The desserts are also wonderful. We had a variety of them and filled up on dulce de leche flavored goodness. Groceries in the side, and only a few small tables but a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon chatting and eating.

Yelp
This place has just becomes one of my go to coffee houses. The food is really good and the service is amazing. Try the sandwiches and pastries, you won't regret it. Their lattes are also worth the price. Great for studying too.
google avatar

Helen N.

Yelp
Not my favorite bakery. The facturas was a bit dry and the glaze didn't seem too fresh. The empanadas were normal nothing too special. Overall I've had better Argentenian food than this place. Very dissapointing.

Valeria D.

Yelp
Yummy pastries amazing coffee helpful staff and delicious imported goods from South America to keep in your pantry
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Love love their bread ! So delicious , my husband just found out about this place and we love it! The only thing I would like is that in the afternoon they still have bread, usually they run out. I get off work late so it would be nice to still have some available for those who get off late. Other than that is yummy!

Yelp
Asturias Bakery provides you with the following geographic attributes: inconvenient location off of the highway, not much room to sit down at to enjoy your goods, and very boring scenery... strip mall, to be sure. All of the pastries were a little too simple, and they were pretty much just variations of the exact same fillings, dough, and frosting. Fortunately, they are cheap here at this Argentinian bakery. I would not recommend this specific bakery to those looking for a true bakeshop, but I guess if you somehow found yourself off of Westpark and are really craving some flaky delicacies, you may want to give it a shot. Otherwise, I don't foresee there being much of a reason to seek out these goods unless you can find them outsourced to an obscure coffee shop or something.

Yelp
This place is so delicious! Awesome pastries--every one of them I have tried has been mouthwatering. Coffee is so flavorful! And, the owner is so nice. Not gushy nice, just plain nice.

Jair M.

Yelp
Great customer service every time. Nice selection of Argentinian products. Great coffee and facturas.
google avatar

Jesus G.

Yelp
I stopped here this afternoon, and while I was not impressed with the strip mall location, it took just one step inside the store to transform my impression!! The locale became a petit café with people conversing over Argentinian coffee and pastries, and the cashier even recommended a sweet, powdered phyllo filled with cajeta/dulce de leche and provided me with a box to put in my dozen facturas, which are a steal compared with some overprized panaderias like Arandas and Maytena. 5 stars!!!
google avatar

Rachell N.

Yelp
I only ordered the alfajores here, but if the quality speaks of the other pastries, the rest should be good. The bakery is right next to a salon and pawnshop. The shop is small but has a decent amount of options. Who I assume is the store owner was pleasant.

Gustavo D.

Yelp
It's my absolute favorite for everything...... their facturas (pastries) will make you feel you're in Argentina, great staff always, their coffee beats any coffee shop around! Empanadas, miga sándwiches out of this world.... this shop will beat ANY craving.... congrats!
google avatar

Yelp
Decided to check out this bakery today since it seems.to be the only neighborhood bakery/cafe between Richmond & hwy 6 on Dairy Ashford. The service was excellent! Judith made me a really yummy caramel latte and I tried two bakery treats called "facturas(?)", one was filled with guava and the other with a homemade cream..both Excellent! There are lots of Argentina imported goods like Yerba Mate and Lavazza coffees that are very reasonably priced (4.99-5.99 for a pound). I will definitely be back, and happy to find a cafe within walking distance in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Yelp
Warm environment! A hole in the wall and indeed a gem in the area! Nice place to have a quiet moment away from a busy midtown downtown or montrose! Cheap desserts and coffees! Well i give 4 stars because thats my perfect score! And the neighboring stores are so-so! This is the only decent place there!
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
This place is so good, I love their pastries and the ambiance. It's not a big place, but I think that's what I like about it. I've never tried anything like their pastries and they're all very delicious. Definitely would recommend to someone looking for something sweet.
google avatar

Karyna L.

Yelp
Great place with awesome pastries. I've never eaten there but usually fill up a box to take to work with me. The bread is a great deal too. Coffee is strong and delicious. The empanadas make a good meal. I like that they have a little convenience store of goods you can buy. I usually speak to them in Spanish but my husband has gone in and the workers speak English too. Check it out!

Margaret T.

Yelp
I ventured in this café this morning to ask a general question about an adjoining establishment and what a surprise it was. I did not intend to buy coffee or anything else -- just get an answer and run. There was such an atmosphere in there and I felt as though I was in South America. I looked at their baked goods and everything looked really top notch so I bought some crusty rolls and a pastry to try and both were delicious. The café itself is well out of the league of other establishments in the area and is what you would expect to find in the Galleria or Post Oak area. The owner/manager answered my general question in a very polite manner and by this I was very impressed.

Yelp
Asturias is a quaint and cozy little place, with amazing Argentine food and pastries. I have frequented this place for 3 years now, and recently noticed that they have made a few changes. They have added a little ambience to this small space, making it more inviting. The Argentine pastries/food are very well displayed making them even more appetizing. This place is a must try in my book.
google avatar

Adrienne R.

Yelp
What a wonderful little gem! I was a bit nervous when I pulled up because the strip center was scary. When I walked in I immediately knew that I had "discovered" a great hole in the wall! The 4 stars is because they were short staffed and I was managing a two year old and didn't have the patience to chill and enjoy the place. Stop here!
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
Definitely a must go to place if you are craving Argentinian pastries! This place is definitely better than Marini's empandas!

Rev H.

Yelp
Ok, i do like my coffee but for a really good place to relax in an very friendly atmosphere this is the place to try. Yes, i like a lot of different coffee shops. Read all the other reviews. Ditto on them all Rev.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
Delicious, scrumptious, unique, and very affordable pastries and desserts. I'm never sure what anything is but it all looks tempting to try and the very friendly staff is always happy to answer my questions. My favourite so far is a guava jam filled croissant style pastry. They're lattes are also delicious and are available to go. Check them out for a treat on the go, a lovely sit down breakfast/lunch (they also have sandwiches I have yet to try) or stock up for a party/gift because you can't beat the prices for the quality.
google avatar

Merci E.

Yelp
Great assorted breakfast patries called "facturas" and outstanding frothy lattes!! The meringue and peaches desert called "Chaha" is out of this world. A new favorite spot to go with my girlfriends!!
google avatar

Nirav P.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. Having lived a good portion of my life in Alief, this place is an example of the fine food offering that are sprouting up after the mad exodus of first time Alief folks. I've been visiting this little shop for years and each time it gets better. The owner/baker is always there and you honestly can't go wrong with the pastries and sandwiches.
google avatar

Jeanette U.

Yelp
Great chicken and beef empanadas. Their pastries are very good too. The location is a bit out of the way for me but is a must when in the area. Will return.
google avatar

George S.

Yelp
This one has to be the best pastry shop around and in many miles. The empanadas are to die for....the sandwiches de miga triples and the facturas are indescribable. Now they have come up with a sandwich de lomito that sells by the dozens. I do not want to go through the entire menu....just go by....you will not regret it.

Ivana G.

Yelp
Most delicious pastries ever!!!beautiful artwork and VERY good pastries.the service is great and the owner is very nice.the place is pretty inside and perfect for your evening coffee. my family always gets pastries from there when we have small party or tea.i obviously tell my friends about it and feed myself with their pastries. I can honestly say I cannot get enough of Asturias

Mia S.

Yelp
I would like to answer to Solomon, Austin: First Sir, in order for you to review a Bakery, you should "know a little about bakeries". Of course You are free to make an opinion about, scenery, address etc. although people usually go to the bakery for the food, not the entertainment. Asturias is a Typical Argentinian (of European roots) bakery, their pastries are what WE Argentinians like, is not simple (on the contrary) bakery. I would consider Mexican "Sweet Bread" simple, because is exactly what you describe. Asturias has an exceptional baker, and our "masas" are not typical of American taste, they are elaborated and with a definite taste! I found their pastries to compete with some of the French, Spanish and Italian bakeries I visited in Europe. Maybe if you read, or travel little more, you will learn a little about a whole world out there. Each culture has its own individual Foods, for Americans is dough nuts, for Argentinians is Torta de Hojaldre con dulce de leche, o facturas.
