The Best Restaurant Dishes Eater Detroit Ate in March 2024 | Eater Detroit

"A Dominican-focused spot known for its chicharrón de pollo: fried chicken treated to an extra-crispy, crackling skin that locks in succulent, tender meat for an especially intense fried-chicken experience. The shop’s homey atmosphere — ceramic tile floors, curtains in Dominican-flag colors, beach and bikini paintings, and a life-sized portrait of the proprietor — underscores a made-to-order approach (a posted request asks patrons to be patient), and the weekend fried chicken is celebrated for delivering authentic, deeply satisfying flavors." - Eater Staff

The restaurant itself is not that impressive. It's an older building that gives off 'diner' vibes. The restaurant decor is minimal but they have some large TV screens in several areas of the dining room playing lively videos of Dominican culture and music which help soften the ambience. We were greeted right away by our friendly waiter. He said his family owns the restaurant and many of them work there. I started my order with a cold glass of their passion fruit juice. It was delicious! For my entree I ordered the Filete Tilapia. (aka Tilapia’s fillet). It was a GENEROUS portion of mild, flaky tilapia stewed in a tasty broth with peppers and onions. It was served with a side of yellow rice and pigeon peas, and a tiny green salad that was tossed in a vinaigrette. I was curious about the ‘pigeon peas’ that were in the yellow rice. I've never had pigeon peas. The waiter described them as ‘green peas’ but to me, they were more like plump lentils. The rice and peas were delicious! The yellow rice was soft and tender with a slight sweetness. The pigeon peas added a little texture to every bite. The tilapia was so tasty! I was served two huge filets. The broth they were simmered in was mild and a perfect compliment to the meaty, flaky, delicate fish. I mixed some of the rice mixture with the broth for a blast of flavor. The little green salad on the side was a bonus! My friend ordered the stewed chicken with white rice and beans. She gave me a taste of her rice and red beans and I loved those too! Such a simple sweet and savory flavor! YUM! I really enjoyed this restaurant. The food is cooked with love. We were greeted as soon as we stepped across the threshold and on the day we dined, there were plenty of folks from the neighborhood dining with us. I enjoyed the mild, simplistic flavors and the generous portions. That salad was a nice touch and took the meal over the top. I would happily go back and eat there again. Asty Time was TASTY TIME!

Never been to a Dominican restaurant before. Puerto Rican & Cuban, but....no D.R. So in I go. I'm the only one eating inside just after noon. They had a steady stream of carry-out orders the whole time I was there. The man behind the counter of this family-owned & -run restaurant greeted me first in Español, then English. That's a good sign in my book. Very personable, quick, good sense of humor. Checked in a few times after my order arrived. Went with the Chicharon de Pollo (Fried Chicken) that comes with tostones (fried plantains). Arrived so hot I had to wait several minutes for the chicken to cool. So I focused on the tostones. Like a chewy version of a French fry but wider. Once an approachable temperature was achieved, I hit the chicken hard. The breading is amazing! Crunchy, light, not overly salted, not greasy at all. 🥰 The chicken inside was delicious, tender. And the amount was huge for lunch: 5 pieces of chicken on a bed of tostones that likely numbered 15. $16 but a ton of food for the price. Dinner is going to be a light snack. The music is authentic and the volume appropriate. The place is clean, comfortable (booths on both sides).

Google
Food: I order one thing at first but only had the taste for one thing on the plate and so I told my waiter and she was so kind & so was the cook/owner, they made me a new plate of what I wanted & asked how it taste & the food was amazing! Taste like it was made with so much love! & Lets not get into the variety of Dominican culture based foods they had, amazing flavors & options, tasty dulce de coco desert, AMAZING pina juice (I had like 5). I loved this restaurant from when I first set foot in it! My Dominican people, I appreciate them so much for being one of the best Dominican restaurants in Detroit ! Service: Amazing waitresses! Amazing Owner, silly sense of humor, he’s caring, and you can tell he loves what he does. I will be returning! Atmosphere: Loved the paintings, made me feel at home, I love the culture behind them, loved the music included & the amount of spacing to eat!

My husband and I recently visited Asty Time Dominican Cuisine to satisfy a craving, and it far exceeded our expectations. We sampled the chicharrón con tostones, arroz blanco con carne guisada, and mofongo with chicharrón and carne frita. Wow! The mofongo was the best I've ever had, bursting with a rich, buttery garlic flavor and generous chunks of chicharrón. The carne guisada was equally impressive, each bite bursting with flavor and leaving us in awe. Every dish we tried was absolutely delicious, showcasing the chef's exceptional talent and skill. The wonderful food was perfectly complemented by the friendliest customer service. The chef himself checked on us to ensure everything was to our liking, adding a personal touch to our dining experience. I highly recommend Asty Time Dominican Cuisine to anyone looking for a memorable meal. You will not be disappointed!

Google
The food was so delicious and the portion sizes were perfect! I’ve never had Dominican food before, so this was a great introduction. Everything was made fresh to order but the wait isn’t bad at all. The server and cooks are kind and informative. I’ll definitely be back!

Yelp
Albóndigas are the classic Dominican-style meatballs made with beef and fresh made Sofritos . They are juicy, flavorful and the sauce they make is absolutely Wonderful. Not Yo Mama's Meatballs I assure you , the owners Mama's recipe she's been making for decades in Dominican Republic. This great dish is on the menu just for Sw Detroit Restaurant week 2022. The drippings are marvelous unique creative gravy produced from the fatty juice's while cooking low and slow. Think au jus n mucho better WOWED.   Also the Favorite Chicharron De Pollo a special made fried Chicken. A unique Dominican dish Los 3s Golpe OMG large wooden cup of Mofongo surrounded by poached Eggs, Fried Cheese and Fried Summer Sausage we devoured this delightful dish. Isa our waiter son of the owner on top of his game. Totally family run owner a Master Chef open now going on 6 year's with wife aunts and cousins in the kitchen. Place always packed with Happy Dominican families dining in and take out orders. This our 3rd visit you must put on your list. Yelp
THE ABSOLUTE CLEANEST AND MOST AUTHENTIC DOMINICAN FOOD I'CE EATEN SINCE LIVING IN FLORIDA. I first came to this spot in 2020, I didn't know if i liked it, the food was good but the environment was a bit off....just went back yesterday for dinner and oh my goodness how much i loved every bit of it. The chicken was clean and fried to perfection, the sweet plantains and salted ones are to absolutely die for! The rice and beans are so delicious. You can't go wrong with this spot. The service was over the top amazing and the dinner was fairly cheap which is always a plus!

Yelp

Yelp
Tried the albóndigas special dish for SW restaurant week. Very delicious and perfectly seasoned. The mofongo is to die for. It's very garlicky and you can hear them pounding the plaintains in the back when you order it. Everything is fresh cooked. The staff are welcoming. I will be returning.

Yelp
Ordered me a fried snapper with rice and red beans. The food was delicious. The place was clean and had the island feel. The wait time was ok.

Yelp
One thing I can say about this place, HEAVEN! It's great to find a small population of Dominicans in Detroit as well as this restaurant, Asty Time, that specializes in Dominican Cuisine. I love the ffact that they have a one page menu so you don't have to spend a lot of time deciding. I ordered the fried pork belly (Chicarrones de Cerdo) with white rice and beans. Totally on point and delicious. Felt like I was home in the DR. I also ordered food to go so I can take for lunch to work. Service was great and they let you know straight out that not to be in a rush because the food is cooked fresh to order and indeed it was. The area where the restaurant is located is kind of slummy but it's worth it because of the food. Enjoy!

Yelp
Wow!! Just... WOW!! If I could give it more stars, I would! Looking from the outside of this place, I wouldn't have any idea this place was there. Talk about finding a treasure, hole in the wall... Their food is amazing!! We had a group of nine of us and I tasted a little bit of everyone's dish. Not disappointed on any of it! Their chicken was so juicy and tender. And their mofongo (if that's how you spell it) was my faaaavorite!! Their service was great! Definitely coming back!!

Yelp
This restaurant is just ok in my opinion. For starters the chips and salsa were regular food service variety. We tried the fried chicken, fried pork belly, and the signature dish; fried whole red snapper, for sides we had plain rice, rice and beans, and Mofongo which is mashed plantains with garlic and pork. The fried foods were dry and extra crispy, the rice sides were bland and the plantains were a bit odd. 2.5 stars

Yelp
Keeping the tradition of Dominican cuisine alive right here in Southwest Detroit. From the tostones, to the chicharrón de pollo, to the chivo guisado falling off the bone - this little spot will delight your taste buds.

Reggie R.

Yelp
Amazing food one of my go to spots now, yet to try everything on the menu but already know it's gonna be good
google avatar

Tina R.

Yelp
Food was amazing!!! I'll be back to try other menu items. Service was fast and friendly. Just a side note: always keep salt and pepper shakers full and clean.

Yelp
uff The best Dominican experience I've had in a restaurant outside of New York and DR.

Yelp
The service is fantastic and the food is delicious. I highly recommend getting the mangu and the mofongo. Any of their pork dishes are always delicious and their fried chicken is like nothing else. Can't go wrong with going to their restaurant!

Yelp
First time in Detroit and searched for a Dominican Restaurant. I am 100% satisfied with their delicious and authentic cuisine! The food was fresh every time. Beautiful people, cool atmosphere and really good food! Don't hesitate! The Chef came to our table to introduce himself and find out how we heard about this restaurant. Super nice guy! I will definitely check in whenever I come to town. Thank you!

Sasha W.

Yelp
When I tell you that this place is sooooo good!!! Super authentic. The owner was there and was so friendly. Him and his hostess helped us through the menu. I don't think there is anything that doesn't taste amazing.

Yelp
I attempted to go there during lunch at noon one day last week and they barely were opening. I was on time constraints and did not have time to wait for them to open. I called today to order carry out and they did not have ANYTHING I wanted. They need to open earlier and prepare for those who are hungry around lunch time.

Shelby U.

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing!! The workers are so friendly and they make you feel at home. The food is also amazing and always made fresh! Will definitely be coming here again.

Yelp
Very small family owned Dominican restaurant. We loved it but Dominican food is a little heavy so be ready to nap afterwards! We got the stewed chicken with a side of rice and beans and it was very filling and tasted super authentic and homemade.

Yelp
This is an amazing restaurant. Everything looks so delicious and is made to order. I would come prepared to sit relax and enjoy some good food. The tostones are to die for and they make pernil that sells fast! Come early because they sell out of food pretty quickly. The arroz con gandules is also really good. I have ordered the mofongo without meat and it taste amazing! It's a family run business and deserves all the support! Love it!!!

Yelp
The food is superb! Fried chicken is my favorite with yellow rice and the plantains are yummy. Dominican soda is delicious and the food is hot and fresh. I enjoy dining in because of the warm welcome and feeling of hospitality. I brought my family from out of town here for Christmas and they were raving over their leftovers the next day... and I treated cause the price is right!

Yelp
Best Authentic Dominican Cuisine in Michigan!!! Friendly family oriented restaurant w/ great customer service and an amazing staff. The Food is Absolutely AMAZING and I plan on coming every week to enjoy the atmosphere and indulge in this awesome Cuisine !!!!! First time trying Goat and I'm addicted, the flavoring of the menu items all mesh so well together. The Goat, plantains, rice and beans and the Mofongo are all my favorites can't choose between them so I get a buffet every time I come.

Yelp
We walked in last Sunday to a completely full restaurant but luckily got the last table. It's a small restaurant but clean and the staff are extremely friendly. (They don't speak English very well but will try very hard communicate-always with a smile) They brought chips and salsa and we ordered the camarones al ajilo with rice and shredded pork with smashed plantains and onions. They didn't call it mofongo but that is what it appeared to be to me. The shrimp was nothing special. It needed more garlic and was mostly just swimming in butter but still OK. The pork didn't look very appetizing but had great flavor and the portion size was huge. The food was hearty type food your grandma would make on a Sunday afternoon. Overall we enjoyed it but probably won't run back anytime soon. This was the third Dominican/PR restaurant we've tried in Detroit and Asty Time was by far the best.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!! If you are looking for good, AUTHENTIC, fresh food in a CLEAN and very hospitable environment this is the place for you! The owners came to our table and made suggestions (our first time trying Dominican food), they are happy to share their culture. We will definitely be back many more times!

Yelp
Haven't been able to try the food. The hours suck. I've tried to order several times but nothing is ever ready when they open. Would love to try the food if I could actually get an order in for lunch.
google avatar

Sterling H.

Yelp
I hate to say this, but I was disappointed. The food was ok, but not as good as the food served in The DR. No sancocho. No verdura (cilantro) and their food tastes like it has powdered spices. I have family in the DR and I have visited many cities there, so I am able to compare this version against the food served in Dominican homes, restaurants and street vendors.

Yelp
Great food, amazing service. I'd never had dominician food before and this was great.

Tanya S.

Yelp
It's a small neighborhood restaurant. The food is excellent and service superb! Very friendly!

Yelp
When I don't want to cook, this is my spot. I love my Dominican food. Arroz, habichuela y carne for life!! They make everything there so it's fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Zac B.

Yelp
Not a huge menu but what they have is pretty darn good. I didn't know they give you chips and salsa that was a nice touch, the salsa was a little bland but hey free chips and salsa I ate the whole thing. Started of with the tostones that were fried perfectly, nice and crisp and ready to eat. I think they could have been enhanced with maybe a dipping sauce but they were great just eating them plain. The Mofungo was also amazing that was a really unique dish I would eat again in a heartbeat, kind of hard to describe you just have to get it. I had the stewed chicken that was pretty good, nice and moist and fell right of the bone. We also got to try the shrimp, it was decent, not bad, but I would maybe skip that it was pretty on par with any other restaurant that serves decent shrimp. The place is very nice and clean and the staff is very friendly, Its also extremely cheap I would recommend if you are on a budget. Plenty of parking in the neighborhood around it also.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Asty today and I absolutely loved the bistek encebollado.I have been in Michigan five years and I'm happy to have found this gem of a spot with authentic Dominican cuisine that is cooked with lots of love and Caribbean spices.I am already planning my next visit.Thank you and buen provecho!!!

William M.

Yelp
Asty Time is tasty time! Excellent Camarone al Ajillo (Shrimp in Garlic Sauce). The garlic butter sauce is outstanding. After dipping the shrimp in it as you eat it, pour all the excess over the white rice for a real treat. The Camarone a la Diabla (Shrimp in Red Sauce) is tasty but it is hot. Also pour the excess sauce over the rice with this dish. I will return to work my way around the menu.

Ricardo M.

Yelp
I was visiting some family in Detroit this past weekend and decided to go here for lunch. It was so great that I had to leave my first review on Yelp after using yelp for over 5 years. The food was delicious and of a good size portion. So much that I couldn't finish it all. Lol. I will definitely be going back to get some good grub the next time that I visit. I did have a bit of difficulty finding the location but that wasn't a big deal.

De Vaughn E.

Yelp
This place has the very best Dominican Food in the city. I was a fan of the restaurant when they started the business at their home. When they moved to McGraw, it only got better. The food, the atmosphere, and did I mention the food!!!! This is a must try!

Larielis A.

Yelp
Absolutely The Best place to go if you're looking for a good home cooked meal. They serve the best spanish/latino/caribbean food in town. The plates are served nice and fresh. If you're looking for something new, different but great in flavor or just to fulfill your taste buds this is the place to go. The orders might take a bit more than usual to be served but the food is completely worth the wait. Everything on the menu is totally affordable and they serve a good portion per plate. The place is very family friendly. The staff is very friendly as well. The entire place has an over all friendly, warm and very welcoming atmosphere, like you're literally at home. This place is great for everyone wether you're with your family or just your spouse/partner, friends or even if you're alone. The service here is great! They're very accommodating. If you visit this place make sure you meet the owner he's an amazing and kind guy.
