The Best Sushi Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Gert Town is lucky to have Asuka Sushi, a contemporary-meets-traditional sushi spot now in a new home on Washington Avenue. There are funky roll options like the Saints Go Go Go with tempura crab, cream cheese, and salmon atop eel and spicy sauce, and the el diablo, a mix of spicy salmon, tuna, and yellowtail spiked with jalapeño, chile, and ponzu sauce. There are also plenty of deep-fried rolls — a good fit for this city." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Our favorite hidden gem for sushi in NOLA! 5-STARS. Always fresh high quality and wonderful sushi. Superb and fast service, in a low key atmosphere. Not pretentious - LOCAL! Favorite rolls are: Aloha roll = mango Koi roll = awesome, no rice, Twister (tempura shrimp and mango) & Rainbow roll. Great sushi to try are: Hamachi (Yellowtail), Eel (Unagi) & Escolar = White tuna. Gary is always pleasant and friendly.

Google
A small sushi restaurant near Xavier's campus, I've previously been before. While they do have traditional offerings, their specialty rolls are where it's at. I was starving so I went a little crazy this time and ordered 2 specialty rolls plus 2 traditional, plus miso and the snow crab app. The miso was standard but good, but the crab app is really flavorful, no Krab here. The yellowtail was some of the best I've had in recent memory. And my salmon skin hand roll WAS the best I've ever had. My crazy roll and queen of the sea were both excellent as well. I had a really hard time trying to choose which ones I wanted because they all sounded so good. The prices are so reasonable too, you can almost afford to order half the menu like I want to. I'll be back to try more, and maybe I can convince them to add mackerel to the menu in exchange for that 5th star. Rules are rules.

Hey Peeps!! If you have not tried Asuka Sushi and Hibachi you need to get there. I mean run, don’t walk, there hibachi is outstanding! The food was fresh, hot, and scrumptious. The service was helpful and polite my first time, and the atmosphere was clean, bright, and very inviting. I will be back; I will not just drive by again. The best hibachi uptown!

Google
Excellent place for sushi and hibachi. Great customer service. DELICIOUS food. Great little hidden gem! Can't wait to come back

Google
The sushi was so good! This place looks unassuming from the outside, but they sure do deliver on the inside. Everything is clean and bright, and the service was outstanding. We started with the Pesce Hamachi, which was melt in your mouth amazing, and then shared the Nemo, Aloha, and Koi rolls. Every single roll was better than the last one. The mango on the Aloha, the lemon on the Koi, and the kick from the chili oil on the Nemo, every one was perfection. We will definitely be back!

Google
My wife and I get food to-go from here all of the time. My wife has tried most of the sushi and rates it all very well. I usually get the chicken fried rice, it's always cooked very well! The people that run it are very nice and fast! They even run their lunch menu on the weekend!!!!

Google
Super tasty and generous portions. Every detailed request of our order was perfect the first time. Our host and server Nick was friendly and very attentive. Will definitely be coming here regularly. Update: Came back for lunch a month later and Nick recognized us. It was busier this time but he was still making each table feel like they were the most important one there.

Google
My favorite place to eat sushi. The waiters are very nice, the service is great and fast, the food is wonderful. The fish feels very fresh. I recommend the pesce maguro. Gyozas are also delicious. Atmosphere is quiet and great for conversation. The place is always busy but usually there is a table available without needing a reservation.

Yelp
We had such a lovely lunch at Asuka. Everything tasted fresh, the service was warm, and the inside is bright and cheery. I'd been passing it for so long and wish I had stopped in sooner. My mom got the sushi lunch special with clear soup. The salad was yummy. We split the tuna tataki and I got a rock n roll plus the sushi sampler. Both were excellent.

Yelp
Have never eat in the restaurant before, however, have been ordering to go or delivery for years and they never miss. This past week we ordered while at work and tried quite a few different things. The tuna tataki and pepper tuna were so delicious and fresh. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
The sushi was delicioussss!! The prices were pretty good and the atmosphere was relaxing. The server was nice too! overall yummy experience

Yelp
Wow- Surprisingly great sushi! Until now, I've been sorely disappointed in all "the best sushi" in Nola- their best tends to be average inc comparison to other food cities- but Asuka is my new sushi spot! We ordered a few standbys: spicy tuna & spicy salmon, and one new: sexy girl roll which turned out to be our favorite (lightly seared tuna steak inside!) Really well priced- this neighborhood hasn't fully formed yet but ample parking all around We'll be back to try other menu options

Yelp
Delicious food!! So fresh. Normal prices. Great service. Fast when you and the group are hungry haha. Glad we found it. We will be coming back.

Yelp
The best sushi.. Its like they picked up right where Kyoto left off.. Always fresh and have the best combination of sauces and sides.

Yelp
Recently went here for lunch with a friend. Very good sushi spot. Cute atmosphere and good service. We both had plum wine for drinks, this wine was delicious, just the right amount of sweetness. For appetizers we had the squid and seaweed salad, both were good. We decided to try House Special Rolls, my friend had the Rainbow Roll (California roll topped with salmon, tuna, white fish, shrimp and avocado) while I had the Dragon Roll (Eel, cucumber, topped with avocado, masago and eel sauce). We enjoyed all of our food. For dessert we had the fried cheesecake, this was a delicious, the star of the show! We didn't have to wait long for our food and our waiter regularly checked on us. The prices were very reasonable. For all of that our bill was a little over $60 (pre tip). Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Omg yall. This place is top tier. I've been twice, each time with someone different. The first time was my sister. Someone just as picky as me. She rated the food a 10/10 and loved everything down to the dessert. Me and her both got 3 different rolls and a cheesecake. We paid separately and our checks were under $30 (not including tip) wow! Now the second time was with my mother, she isn't very fond of sushi nor hibachi, but even she rated this place a 10. She loved it so much. She told us the next day that we have to go back and try something else. I've never seen her like a restaurant this much especially a different cultural restaurant. Amazing! 10/10 a cute and small place to enjoy underrated meals!
google avatar

Yelp
Good, food, service & ambiance! The music is vibes It's clean, the food is so FRESH! Just go! Omg I'll be back. Glad I found this little place on here!

Yelp
Just finished my lunch delivered by Uber. I can't understand all these high ratings. My sushi was mediocre. One item was good the ikura salmon roe sushi. The roe was chilled properly and it was a generous portion. Tasted great. The spider roll was bland and the amount of softshell crab quite small. The salmon skin handroll had an off flavor and didn't hit the right notes taste wise. The eel sushi was pretty good...nothing exceptional. I still would give them another chance because their pricing is better than most here in New Orleans. Maybe it was a bad day for them.
google avatar

Andy V.

Yelp
This low key spot has noticeably better fish than the sushi restaurants I've tried in NOLA. Really good salmon, tuna and yellowtail here, especially. I have been to most of the sushi spots in uptown, marigny, CBD, Treme and a couple in mid city. If you love pure sushi this is a better spot than most. They also have good rolls but to me you have to judge sushi by the fish, first. I've noticed they seem to do TONS of to go orders which keep the fish fresh in rotation. Sushi takeout makes me laugh though. Just go, sit down, and relax.
google avatar

Noah B.

Yelp
Favorite sushi in the city. Gyoza is excellent as well. Food holds up on Uber eats and preparation time is fast and efficient

Yelp
I really enjoyed the Saints Go Go Go roll and Louisiana roll, add the $5 glass of wine and you're destined for a very fulfilling happy hour. Our server was very kind and assisted us quickly! The inside is small but clean and not overwhelmingly loud. It's close to Xavier University of Louisiana and about 11 minutes from the French Quarter. It's definitely worth revisiting and tasting new rolls!
google avatar

Shaula L.

Yelp
This is my favorite Sushi place. If you feel like rolls try the Crazy Roll. It's crunchy it's tasty and has a hint of sweetness from the eel sauce. If you like spicy tuna try the sumo roll. There is a roll for everyone. But my absolute favorite are the Pesce Maguro and all it's cousins (Hamachi and Shiro). If you are in need of less carbs then the Spicy Cajun salad is a perfect combo of fish, ponzu vinaigrette on a bed of cucumber. I think what I like the most is that the rolls all focus on a flavor profile without going insane putting everything under the sun on a single role. Their new space is nice and confortable and a great place for quick lunch or dinner with the family.
google avatar

Grave R.

Yelp
Cozy place for sushi. Recommended for a date. Get Ramune and order some appetizers. The edamame was great! Would come here just for that if you love Edamame.
google avatar

Aldwin A.

Yelp
It's not a hole in the wall but it's located in a standalone building infront of an apartment complex in an industrial area with plenty of free street parking nearby. I went during lunchtime so I didn't find the neighborhood unsafe. This restaurant is Chinese-owned but the sushi is great value for the quality and affordability. I'm deducting a star because my to-go order of Hamachi kama was missing the rice, soup, and salad that should've come with it according to the menu.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
Food was great, service A1 and very clean place. It's one of the cleanest restaurants I ever been to
google avatar

Nicoya W.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place!!! It's a little hole in the wall that you'd probably pass up...but don't!!! Everything is fresh and delicious!!! I've never actually sat inside I've always ordered via delivery. But I've never been disappointed. I'll be ordering from them for awhile. I do wanna go inside and checkout the omakase menu though. Great place! Worth trying!
google avatar

Reia B.

Yelp
Small restaurant on Earhart off of Carrollton. Decided to give them a try and I was not disappointed. I had their Metairie Roll and Rock n Roll cut in small pieces. Both rolls were fresh and tasty. They only offer take out. The restaurant is blocked off at the entrance with plexiglass. They offer online ordering and payment, but charge a convenience fee. I would have given them 4-stars but the lady that gave me my order was not friendly, didn't speak after I spoke when I entered the restaurant and her thank you was an afterthought when she turned and walked away.
google avatar

Alena W.

Yelp
We loved this place. Everything we ordered came out quick and delicious. Aloha rolls with mango were melting in my mouth....mmm amazing! Thank you!
google avatar

Erin A.

Yelp
I recently found out that Asuka had moved location. Hubby and and I been craving the Asuka roll so we decided to make a visit today. The new location is quaint and has an easy-going, relaxing ambiance. There's more seating if you prefer to dine in. And I must say the food is EVEN BETTER...if you can imagine that!! Parking is still a struggle, but absolutely worth the trouble. Cheers to great food

Yelp
This sushi is legit. I'm very happy to have found it. I was skeptical because it felt inexpensive. You would miss it driving by, I'm sure I have before. I had Escolar sashimi with ponzu, straight sushi, and all of it was delicious. The miso soup too. New happy patron! Thank you. Finally.

Joseph P.

Yelp
The sushi was very good, and so was the Hibachi............ but I could not believe they charge you for condiment (spicy mayo).... I have never been charged for this at any other restaurant.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when our Uber driver dropped us off but this hole in the wall type Japanese restaurant was delicious. After days of the typical Louisiana food, we were tired of fried everything and wanted to experience what Asian food in the south tasted like. This restaurant is about 3 miles away from the French quarter - just enough distance to make you feel like you're in a whole different part of the state. I ordered the teriyaki chicken which came with miso soup, ginger dressing house salad, and white rice. Although the chicken was a little dry, overall the meal was pretty good. The price point was great too - the meal cost under $14 and I had left overs for lunch the next day. The owners of the restaurant were very nice and quick with the service. Although can't be compared to the Japanese food in California, i would definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in the area and need a break from typical NOLA cuisine.

Yelp
Finally trying asuka after driving by many times! They have a great lunch special that includes two rolls, a soup, and salad, for $10! The rolls were delicious, and this is definitely the most affordable sushi place uptown. The inside is very spacious and clean, and they have a separate area for pickups. Cant wait to come back and try some of their special rolls!

Luna L.

Yelp
I love this place so much. The avocado poppers are a must. The miso soup and salad with the ginger dressing are better than other places I've had it. I ordered the Tulane roll, and my boyfriend had the Lion King roll. Be Prepared for an excellent meal if you go ;)
google avatar

Robert V.

Yelp
I just saw the new sign at the old Kin building! So excited!!! Nice to get away from that loud bar. Can't wait to come in.

Yelp
Asuka is one of my favorite hole in the wall sushi restaurants! A lot of people don't know about this gem & I must say, I'm not sure why. It's tucked in a little corner on Earhart, with little parking space but I never have trouble finding a spot in the lot! Right now, due to Covid, they only have take out orders and no indoor dining. :/ My favorite rolls are the no rice rolls, Louisiana (fried) roll, and literally everything else there is so good! Fish is always so tasty here. This morning for brunch, we decided to go with the 2 roll lunch special that comes with soup and house salad (comes with amazing ginger dressing) and we got 2 orders of the combination hibachi rice. The combo comes with shrimp, steak, and chicken. This hibachi rice is one of the best I've had in Nola! It's my go to spot for hibachi rice. It's not cooked in front of you like other places, but whatever they put it in, they got it down pat! The yum yum sauce is sooo yummy! Put it on your hibachi rice and it changes the game for sure. I recommend!

Yelp
This little spot, and I do mean little, has had some awesome surprises for me over the handful of visits here. There is little off street parking available as the tiny lot is shared by at least 1-2 other businesses. Otherwise, it occupies space adjacent to residential property so if all else fails, there's street parking. Our first visit was a sit down dinner date. Our server was really helpful when it came to all of our questions and making us feel welcome. On our second visit -- the happy surprise was the Avocado Appetizer, lightly fried and served with snow crab, drizzled with delicious super soy based sauce. YUM #goodfat remember that! The third delight I encountered was the snow crab salad for $3.50. I had no idea that it would be a full on container of just snow crab?!!? Sign me up!! Lastly, the prices are really good, the service is genuine and this little spot truly is diamond in the rough!

Julie O.

Yelp
I think it's the best sushi in New Orleans. Delicious and fresh. Highly recommend this place.

Becky G.

Yelp
LOVED Asuka Sushi!! First time there with our bed school grandson and girlfriend and we all loved it!!
google avatar

Felicia N.

Yelp
We needed a quick bit to eat so we decided to give this place a try. The sushi was very good. We love sushi and alway looking for a place to eat. We didn't get to dine in this time...we did a quick pick up. What we ordered was delicious but I don't think it was enough hahaha My kids finished everything!!! Next time I definitely want to dine in so we can order more and have the full experience of the good food and place.

Nessa G.

Yelp
The restaurant is super cute, welcoming, small, very very clean. The downside is there is no real designated parking lot. The food was delicious. I will most defiantly be coming back!
google avatar

Von W.

Yelp
Everything was great, food, service and ambiance. I rarely enjoy the soup at sushi restaurants and the salad is sometimes lacking in flavor, but both the miso soup and ginger salad were on point. The crunchy rolls were fresh and delicious! The hibachi rice, steak, shrimp and noodles were seasoned well and cooked to order. The only negative is that they don't serve fountain drinks, only bottles, so no free refills. However, I haven't had a Sprite this strong and tasty in sometime. Lastly, the service from Nick was great. He was very knowledgeable, personable and fast. And he is hilarious. They should just install a stage in the center of the restaurant and give him a mic.
google avatar

Bari B.

Yelp
My husband and I have been looking for a sushi place in town and stumbled upon Asuka. We had an assortment of nigiri and rolls during our visit and both agreed it was good but not great. It is a great place when you need a quick sushi fix and the staff is extremely friendly. I did notice a lot of people getting hibachi takeout so maybe that is more what they are known for.
google avatar

Gabi V.

Yelp
Good sushi at reasonable prices! I ordered for pick up and it was ready in 20 minutes. Absolutely a hidden gem. Great portions. My favorite was the Louisiana roll ( asked to omit the crawfish) and the philly. If you're looking for a sushi fix, this will do the job.
google avatar

Kevin N.

Yelp
Love this place visiting back home in NOLA must get the pesce maguro. It is a small place but they added more to the building at the new location! Food was delicious and a good overall price!
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I really liked everything we got! I don't love the atmosphere, but the service and food is still worth the trip
google avatar

Eugenie B.

Yelp
Excellent! Fri night, the place we tried to go to first had a private party so everyone had to pick another Sushi Restaurant. The Doc I was with suggested this place. What a great choice! They were super busy but so worth the wait. We had The Tower, Rice Paper Roll, Snow Crab Naruto, and the Aloha Roll. Stoked that we were able to get a really good Saku, although pricey, excellent. We had two bottles.... Horton Gekkeikan Sake. Ultra Premium Junmai Daiginjo.
google avatar

Keysha B.

Yelp
Since they have moved closer to my house, I have a roll at least once a week. All the ingredients always taste so fresh.
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
Food was fast, service great. It was quiet and I had GOOD food! Very pleasant meal. I would eat sushi here regularly.
google avatar

Cesar R.

Yelp
As you drive up you will def think "should I really be eating fish from this shady shack"? The answer is YES! Once you step inside you find yourself in a very traditional sushi restaurant with a very corky waiter. Order by putting the number of rolls you want on the sheet provided. My advice, be adventures everything will be very fresh and tasty. My favorites are The Tower and the Devil Roll. When you eat the tower make sure to include wasabi peas in your bite it will add a nice kick to it. Great for lunch, dinner or a date. Only downside is parking is very limited. Lesson of the day "don't judge a restaurant by its cover" ;-)
google avatar

Alison H.

Yelp
When 10 of our friends descend upon this joint and they are able to handle this crowd I know, they are legit! What this place lacks in atmosphere they make up for in quality! We bring the fun, they bring the food and sake. We literally bought them out of sake that night. EVERY roll that we had was unbelievable and the price was fantastic. So much bang for our buck. The Rice Paper Roll was AH-MAZING!! El Diablo, Saints Go Go Go Roll, Nemo, Zesty, and BR Roll with jalapeño!!! This proved to be a great night! Can't wait to go back again!!
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Solid sushi joint! Amazingly fresh! Consistent. Small, not extravagant. Just great food! A hidden gem for locals! Stay away tourists.
google avatar

Lauren V.

Yelp
Good quick sushi pick-up place since they don't allow dine in at this time. Sashimi is OK quality but they have good rolls (dynamite and spicy salmon are cheap ones!) and gyoza!
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Super easy takeout process, I called in and they had it ready within 10-15 minutes. Pretty contactless pickup, since they have a wall up at the takeout counter, with just a small window to pass the food through. I had the Rocky Roll and a miso soup. The roll was super yummy and very filling, the soup was also good but a little too salty for my taste (not overwhelmingly so, but still could've been toned down a little bit). Overall, pretty good!
google avatar

Kendall R.

Yelp
Sushi is good and their lunch special can't be beat. Two rolls, a soup, and a salad for about $11. The food is consistent and they have a good set up for picking up orders during the pandemic. Only 4/5 stars because the sushi is good but not amazing. It gets the job done and is great for the price.
google avatar

Joyce G.

Yelp
Nick the server was nice. Termites were all over my Line Sister which made me fidgety and uncomfortable for her as I hate the concept of having extra protein and it wasn't the most brightly lit place. Anywhoo, I was shocked there wasn't a live hot hibachi cook top but was okay it wasn't there as I have tipped not to have the show. Yet, I have an issue with the price point without the whole cooking chef. Plus, NO SCALLOPS! Deduct all stars What in the world. No shrimp appetizer! Deduct all stars No birthday offerings nor celebration. Deduct 4 stars My crew said the Avocado popper was exceptionally good. I mean all 6 out of 6 said this. We didn't get the Stuffed Jalapeno app but please note the ambiance works for the place. They would do better with a screen door. The Miso soup has a thicker broth and isn't the best flavor. I'd go with the Clear Soup under all conditions. The parking lot included a Latino panhandler who's story did follow a script and I spoke on to him in Spanish he replied in English. Persistent he was. The kitchen genuinely stops cooking at 9pm. I hope this review helps someone who's searching for things like: no Scallops, no Birthday offering/deals, no Hibachi show or cooking chef, full size shrimp cooked nicely, veggies solely onions, mushrooms, zucchini and all in all I had a great time because I was with friends that are more like family.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
I'm actually extremely upset that I have to update my 4 star review to 2 stars but it needs to be done. This is the third time I've ordered/taken out from Asuka and received fish that tastes fishy and inedible. Specifically the unagi and the tuna. Eel is my favorite sushi to order and I can't even imagine ordering it here and it being fresh anymore. I don't know why they began to slack off these past few months, but I'm glad I'm leaving New Orleans soon so I don't have to worry about finding decent sushi. This is really really upsetting and I hope you find a way to fix this and produce great product like you once did!
