Where to Eat Along America’s Iconic Highways | Eater

"Duluth, Minnesota is the northernmost point of highway I-35, which runs down to the Mexico-U.S. border in Laredo, Texas. At its north end, you can get cozy At Sara’s Table, a longstanding community cafe that began in the 1990s as a mobile coffee shop in a trailer. Now, the indoor-outdoor restaurant in the tree-filled Chester Creek neighborhood offers farm-to-table fare for breakfast and an all-day menu that includes a wide range of comfort foods, such as biscuits with chorizo gravy, kimchi fried rice, chicken pot pie, and more. Stock up on baked goods and homemade granola for the next part of your drive." - Vox Creative

The Best Restaurants in Duluth, Minnesota | Eater Twin Cities

"A Chester Park neighborhood staple since 2002, At Sara’s Table Chester Creek Cafe is a charming cafe with a mouthful of a moniker. The menu features breakfast classics, sandwiches, and entrees from spaghetti and meatballs to vegan bibimbap. It’s like having a lazy Sunday lunch at Grandma’s house, if Grandma made a killer mocktail (try the lavender-lemon and soda)." - Justine Jones

Probably my favorite breakfast in Duluth. Very fun options with all locally sourced ingredients. It's always pretty busy, but they keep things moving really well. The biscuit and berries is incredible. If you like a biscuit please get it. The Benedict with the wild rice sausage patties is one of the best breakfasts you can have. Service is always really good and quick. Come here if you have the chance!

Google
Cowboy hash was delicious. The brisket in it was awesome, I only wish the eggs were less hard. The bread and jam really were a surprising treat too. We did have to wait about 20 minutes but you can order a coffee while you wait or sit at the bar or outside. I love the ambience - the bookshelves and big cozy booths especially. The Bloody Mary came with a good bent paddle chaser although there was no cheese/meat on the skewer (you could pay a whopping three extra dollars for a single slice of bacon added). The prices were the real downside here. At least on the breakfast front it seemed like a comparable restaurant would charge a few bucks less for a similar dish.

Google
What a true farm to table restaurant with a unique and cozy atmosphere. The menu offers plenty of variety and options as well as drinks. I tried their curry which was my favorite, my boyfriend tried Korean barbecue chicken sandwich with their truffle fries. For our dessert we had their peanut butter mocha which was delicious.

Google
The French toast was so good! The atmosphere was so cute on the cafe side! Light and airy and very cutesy. We were sat on the bar side and it was also cute just kind of a darker aesthetic! Our server was very nice and you could tell she loved her job! She was very insightful about menu items and helped some of my friends decide what to order!

Martin V.

Google
Phenomenal food. I had the chicken curry and my wife had the bison and wild rice polenta. Both dishes were gluten free. Great list of coffee and teas. The wine pairings were spot on. Cannot wait to go back again.

Google
Visiting Duluth, eat like a local here. It’s locally owned, an eclectic atmosphere with outstanding service and food. The homemade cherry Danish was flaky and buttery. Two of us shared the Cowboy Hash. It was flavorful with tender chunks of brisket with a delightful Harissa sauce. So good! You will love it here.

Google
Amazing atmosphere, great food, great service, reasonable prices! What more can you ask! We went there for breakfast on a Saturday morning and there was like a 5 min wait for the patio (we had a dog with us). The service was awesome! And the food was just as good! I got the pancake and my wife got the eggs florantine( I think) and it was just what we were looking for!

Alecia G.

Google
Delicious Just Egg vegan omelet! Stuffed with tons of tender, well-seasoned, sautéed veggies and vegan cheese (opt), the filling stayed piping hot until my last bite. Served with a slice of wild rice bread, jelly, and breakfast potatoes. A little pricey but worth every penny. Packed on a Wednesday morning, but service was excellent as always. Staff runs like a well-oiled machine and makes it seem effortless.

Yelp
This is my personal favorite place to eat in Duluth. I've eaten here for over 15 years, usually breakfast or brunch. We used to have a vacation home up here and I brought friends and recommended it to our rental guests. The staff is always friendly and efficient and the place is very comfortable and cozy, with book-lined walls, lots of huge windows and cozy booths and tables. They have a nice outdoor eating space along the road side of the building. They have their own seasonal garden across the parking lot. This time I had the smoked salmon omelet with American fries. My omelet was stuffed with smoked salmon, spinach, havarti and pesto. It was as always delicious. The American fries were way overdone but since I love my taters crispy I did not complain. I sometimes get the vegetable omelet when I come. (Not to gawk, but people at the table next to us had the Florentine Eggs Benedict and it looked fabulous.) My husband had the pancake and a side of sausage patties. The pancake came the size of a dinner plate and was delicious (I finished the last 4 bites for him). He commented that he thought the sausage was "bland" and noted there were 3 kinds of hot sauce provided at the table. Note to self, you will need 3 syrups for the pancake.

Yelp
A small restaurant with a long wait. Especially since we checked in and waited. We asked again in 20 minutes and she said we hadn't checked in. All 4 of us heard the guy say we were checked in but he had been replaced. So another long wait. Then we were seated in the annex. The food is good; not great. I expected the Okonomiaki to have more of a crepe like pancake stuffed with ingredients. It was just a jumble of items together. Kind of an afterthought type of dish. Not like in Japan. Service was rushed and no refills on beverages. We waited 20 minutes for the check. They also sell local teas and other products in their small store area.

Yelp
I went with a small group and had high hopes because they said it was good. Things started out well with the service and the first drink I had, the Gulf of Mexico, was very tasty. Overall, it was a good ambience with the used books for sale on the wall and casual vibe. Appetizers were good, but really went downhill with the meal. I along with several others, ordered the polenta. It came out dry and overcooked like it had sat under the heat lamp for too long. It wasn't just mine, others had the same experience. Since it was one of their signature dishes, I expected a lot more in the quality of the preparation. Had it not been overcooked and dried out, it would've probably been pretty good. I ordered a second Gulf of Mexico, and it came in the wrong kind of glass, did not taste nearly as good as the first one. It actually tasted a bit mediciney as they had gotten the measurements completely wrong. The server was polite and did a nice job with our group. While I may give it a second try if someone suggested it, I probably would not pick it as a place to go back to.

Yelp
Outstanding breakfast every time we visit :) It's the perfect spot - staff are always kind, food is absolutely delicious, and it feels like you're in the comfort of your own home. I can't say enough about this place. It's a must try if you're in Duluth area!

Broadey C.

Yelp
Amazing! Servers were friendly, food was delivered in a very timely manner and was exceptional.

Yelp
We loved Sarah's table! The atmosphere is cozy and eclectic, and you can wait by their giant wood burning stove for your table. There is a parking lot on the side, so parking was easy. We had delicious giant breakfasts- everything from your typical sweeter fare to omelets to unique savory dishes. I had the Okonomiyaki off of the all day menu because I wanted something on the healthier side, and it was absolutely delicious. Our server told us that they tried to take it off the menu at one point, and there was basically a revolt, so they had to put it back. I see why. Our croissant was also a hit, and we loved the special Maple Brown Sugar Latte. It can get busy, especially for brunch on the weekends, so I suggest making a reservation if you can. They have an online wait list, so you can "get on line" before you even arrive to cut down your wait time if you are a walk-in. This is probably our favorite brunch spot in Duluth.

Yelp
This place was so delicious!!! Oh my god like do I move to Duluth so I can come here every weekend (or day)??? The food is delicious, and from what I understood, majority of it was also organic or locally sourced!! The inside feels like a cozy cabin. And the staff were all so so so friendly and amazing. Truly couldn't have had a better experience. Oh their drip coffee is also lovely (and bottomless duh).
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food, genuine service, and comfortable atmosphere. We were there for lunch on a Saturday, about a 25 minute wait, but it went fast. Lots of seating, they were very busy. Can be a bit pricey, but the quality of the ingredients is high. Try them out! We had the Brisket Hash and GBLT.
google avatar

Neil S.

Yelp
Very busy, but excellent food and a really great place to enjoy eating it! I can see why it's a popular brunch spot.

Yelp
Absolutely love the food here. We browsed the bakery case as we waited for a table. Every pastry and bread looked so good. I had to step away from the case. Haha I enjoy a hot chocolate that came with lots of whip and my hubby had a real cappuccino. Attentive waitress and relaxed atmosphere made for the a great breakfast. The corned beef hash was so hearty and so much flavor in my mouth. The Biscuit in a chorizo gravy was different but so creamy delicious with a spicy kick. The homemade biscuits was soft and soaked up all the sauce. Too full for dessert. When we walked out we watched employees go to their garden with baskets and they picked all kids of fresh herbs & veggies I assume. So cool.

Kari W.

Yelp
The food was amazing maybe a little more pricey, great service but expansive menu. Lots of parking and great omelette and eggs Benedict!
google avatar

Deanie H.

Yelp
Fantastic food in Duluth with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options! We ordered the tofu curry, quesabirria, and yam fries. The curry has been a staple on their menu for 20+ years according to our server. The best IMHO were the yam fries and their ranch is deeeelicious--tasted homemade! They also have a bakery counter with lots of GF and Vegan options. We got the blueberry & orange crumble tart and an affogato to-go. The affogato was perfect. Service was friendly and fast. We were even seated in the "bar area" which was just a quaint little add on to the main restaurant area. They're open late too!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything is perfect at Sara's Table! Friendly staff that made wonderful recommendations, great wine list, and loved the pet friendly patio. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We were passing through Duluth and needed to get something for dinner. When we asked about Sarah's Table at the front desk of our hotel the response from a distant voice that overheard us was an enthusiastic "Oh hell yes! That place is fantastic"! And it was! It was a warm, almost tropical summer night in Duluth (kind of a rare thing) so we sat out on the deck. Good choice. It was getting late and we didn't need a lot of food so my wife and I both ordered dinner salads and split the Okonomiyaki described on the menu as a "savory Japanese pancake". To me it was more like fancy hash browns. However you want to describe them they were delish. The dinner salads were fresh, generously portioned and gorgeous with the water melon radishes. All in all, a great meal at a great restaurant. Can't wait to stop again next time we're in the area.
google avatar

Adeline W.

Yelp
This is my all-time favorite neighborhood restaurant. I love to stop by there for coffee in the morning and especially love to go there for dinner dinners and brunches. Lots of locals eat here as well as tourists. Make sure you get there with at least an hour to wait if you're going on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

Brad L.

Yelp
Overpriced-overhyped diner food, is what my friends called it this am. Awful omelette for me. What happened to this place? Brought out of town guests with high hopes and the veggie omelette had a tiny amount of veggies and little cheese swimming in oil. Just oozing out of the eggs. And the side potatoes were dry and old. I gave it a 2. Friends, a 3 at best. What happened to you, Sara's Table?? Got my omelette comped but like I outta be happy about that, the way the server presented it. Meh.

Yelp
At Sara's Table has been my absolute favorite spot in Duluth for years. As a proud UMD alum, I spent countless mornings here during college, making it a place that holds a special spot in my heart. Now, even though I only visit Duluth a couple of times a year with family or friends, one thing remains constant--At Sara's Table is a must for breakfast. While their lunch and dinner offerings are fantastic, there's just something extra special about breakfast here. The cozy, eclectic vibe makes it the perfect place to start the day, and no matter what you order, you truly can't go wrong. I typically lean toward sweet breakfasts, but on my most recent visit, I opted for the breakfast burrito--and let's just say, it did not disappoint. No matter what I get though, I always have to get their wild rice cranberry toast with jam. That jam is next-level! I wish they sold it to go. I did get their granola to go. :) Beyond the incredible food, the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and effortlessly inviting. The staff is always friendly, making each visit feel worth it! I know I'll be back many, many, many more times!
google avatar

Yelp
We visit Sara's Table every time we visit Duluth. My husband gets the same thing every time, the chorizo biscuits and gravy. I on the other hand am more adventurous and have ordered anything from the smoked salmon platter to the French toast with stout syrup to the eggs Benedict. I'm convinced they can't make a bad meal which is what keeps us coming back. They have a great outdoor patio with plenty of seating with a view of Lake Superior. The inside is a classic, cozy diner, with vegan and gluten free options.
google avatar

Benjamin S.

Yelp
This was a nice place for a brunch. They had a nice and accommodating menu (dairy free, vegan, etc friendly). The food was rather good and the ambiance was nice. I'd definitely stop back on another road trip. FOOD: I got a vegetable omelet and side salad with an iced tea. All of which were well prepared. The part that was impressive to me was accommodating dairy and gluten allergies in our party. They had pastries for both allergies and that's awesome! SERVICE: perfectly sufficient and friendly PARKING: easy in their lot AMBIANCE: we sat outside and it was comfortable. Not much to note. I believe it was a booth type seating arrangement. Overall I'd recommend stopping here for a meal or for pastries as you head to or from your destination, or if you life in Duluth. (Sorry no pictures on this one )

Yelp
What a lovely, cozy little place to have breakfast. My boyfriend and I were having a romantic winter weekend up in Duluth and this was just the spot to have breakfast before we headed home. The staff were friendly and made great suggestions! I ordered the Florentine Benedict and my boyfriend got the meat omelet. Everything was delicious, even down to their house coffee. We also ordered a blueberry pancake to share. We were even able to try their famous beer syrup on it which was very unique. My only gripe was that they didn't offer pancakes 'a la carte' you had to pay $11 for the entree size. I ended up taking some food home for sure. Loved the breakfast here!!! We will be back next time we're in Duluth!
google avatar

Yelp
I had been here once years ago and remembered how much I loved it, and once again I was blown away. The food is absolutely impeccable and innovative. I absolutely recommend this to everyone. You also have a view of Lake Superior which was fun to see because the first time I went it was dark in the evening. The atmosphere is cozy, and their in house baked pie was fabulous to take home. The server was very friendly and attentive. Will be back many times when I come through Duluth!

Michael W.

Yelp
Every time we visit Duluth, we visit At Sara's Table; and it never disappoints. Great service, nice ambiance, great porch - and then there's the food! Just had the Korean fried chicken sandwich, and it was excellent. Cooked to perfection, with a yummy tangy kimchi sauce. Wish I could return tomorrow...
google avatar

Hnou V.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to eat when I'm up in Duluth. It can get really busy at peak lunch and dinner hours so expect to wait to get in and to wait to get your food. I love the vibe and atmosphere here. The staff are also very nice. The owners values of sustainability, justice, and love really shine through. I love their brunch menu and the farm to table concept is really appealing to me. If you like spicy food, I would recommend the Korean Fried Chicken sandwich. For brunch, I like their benedicts. This restaurant is vegetarian friendly. They also have a kids menu. Great spot for families and groups.
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
Great service, lovely venue, and the food, while a bit pricy, was large portions. Would definitely come back. This might be our new brunch hot spot!

Alyssa R.

Yelp
We had a 30 min wait at 10:30a on a Friday morning, but food was worth it! Egg's Benedict is a must have!! Cozy ambiance with very friendly staff. Will go again.
google avatar

Charlie L.

Yelp
After lunch decided to come here for dessert. Did not disappoint!!!! Had a seasonal berry pie and it was amazing! Got these other pastries for breakfast tomorrow. Absolutely will come back. Staff is also great! Helpful and polite! If in Duluth and want a good dessert, this is the place!

Yelp
After reading so many stellar reviews, we headed over here after our half marathon. The atmosphere is welcoming and eclectic. We both ordered warm drinks to take the chill off - hubby a chai latte and me a turmeric golden milk. They hit the spot; in fact hubby liked his so much, he ordered a second one. We had looked at the menu online but apparently the seasonal menu recently changed so I wasn't able to order what I had hoped to. I did have the portabello wrap but although it may sound strange, I subbed piquillo peppers for the portabellos since I don't like mushrooms! The rest of the warm wrap had tempeh, house made Boursin cheese, tomatoes, and olive tapenade (although I really couldn't taste the tapenade). It was warm and delicious. Choice of sides include chips, house made tortilla chips, or carrots; I chose the tortilla chips and they were good. Hubby had the brisket au jus and a side of tomato bisque. It looked small but there was a generous portion of brisket. He enjoyed both. Our table was in view of the desserts and since we had run a half marathon, I figured I earned a treat and chose the blueberry crumble pie. Had I known it was $13, I might have given it a second thought (but it was a generous sized mini pie). Tip: ask to have it warmed up! It was initially served ice cold and even after I asked to have it warmed, it was still cold in spots. This is why I gave the review 4 stars instead of 5 but otherwise we had a very satisfying meal.
google avatar

Huzefa G.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to this place, unfortunately the dinner did not meet the beautiful homely vibe it has. We ordered the Pallela; they were out of shrimp but recommended that we take extra scallops instead. Fine by me; however there were only 4 small baby scallops (the dish was supposed to have scallops already). The taste was very mediocre. Mom ordered the Brisket AU JUS and in her words "It was bland". My wife got the KFC which was the star of the night. The chicken was flavorful and the salad in the sandwich was spectacular. I would like to try it for breakfast but would skip dinner here
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
It's a cute little place. Not very busy in the evening. We had the Korean chicken sandwich and street tacos. The fries were good paired with their house made ranch. The atmosphere is a little cramped, and the service is lacking at times, but I understand that their job is hard and that some days are just rougher than others.

Alli A.

Yelp
Amazing spot for a quick lunch, we had the avocado BLT, blueberry pancakes, breakfast potatoes, Korean fried chicken and the broccoli cheddar soup. Service was quick and the waiter was very helpful in deciding what to order. We will definitely be coming back again!

Marina Y.

Yelp
The food was really good, service was spectacular! Lots of options for any food allergies and their gluten free bread is to die for. Our server James was so nice and welcoming!
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Love everything about this place. Great atmosphere and people with an interesting and varied menu. Creative and tasty dishes twitch something for everyone. Recommend reservations but they also have an online waiting list
google avatar

Brandy H.

Yelp
Had the tempeh BBQ grilled cheese with yam waffle fries and the French toast. Both phenomenal dishes. Also enjoyed a soy latte and my husband had the mimosa and Minnesota mimosa (made with apple cider). The restaurant had plenty of seating and cute decor. And our server was pleasant and attentive. Will definitely visit again!
google avatar

Tfotie T.

Yelp
My aunt brought me here Amazing pancakes I was a wee little lad so it was fun Service was Great from what i remember Ambience was ok Valid spot
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Good vegan options. Wine list is adequate. Nice seating outside with peak of Lake Superior.

Haeli L.

Yelp
Service was good, food portions seemed small for the cost (usually I get two meals out of one anywhere I go out to eat, I devoured it all here and wasn't stuffed) but I understand it is sourced locally so there has to be an up charge. Food is delicious though and their peanut butter latte was rich and delicious. Come here occasionally because of the higher prices but for a once in awhile treat, definitely come here!
google avatar

Ann H.

Yelp
Beautiful, tasty, lovely presented food. Pleasing proportions and patio dining for pooches.

Jeff A.

Yelp
We went to Sara's Table for brunch and then again for dinner during our visit to Duluth, and enjoyed both experiences. The food was fresh and had a great mix of flavors, and the prices were very reasonable. The service was fast and responsive even when they were busy ... so everything you'd want in a restaurant! We highly recommend to anyone traveling to the area, and really enjoyed the salmon omelet and brisket hash, as well as the short-rib dinner.
google avatar

C.E. T.

Yelp
A very casual but styly cozy restaurant. On top of the hill where one can enjoy from nice breakfasts to lunches to dinner. Wonderful coffees. I mean Cappuccinos and everything in between. Omelettes are delicious as well as any other dishes prepared at your taste. Nice people hosting you. Felt at home.
google avatar

Ashish G.

Yelp
Nice spot close to UMD campus. The online waitlist doesn't work on weekends so maybe worth putting yourself in and then go somewhere if busy. One can have coffee drinks or drinks while waiting. We had 30-40 min wait but it was also parents weekend for UMN. Food was good - in our group we had a sandwich, biscuits and gravy and omelette. All good.

Charles S.

Yelp
Please don't poison the food, and deceiving the custom is terrible! Beware of the service here!!
google avatar

Matthew Y.

Yelp
I go here many times per year from out of state as a second home base. I enjoy, of course, the quality of food first. But also the whimsy and the poetry in the menu and even the coffee mugs. Thank you for a wonderful and consistent dining experience while I am in Duluth!
google avatar

Lexi W.

Yelp
This cozy place is a must try in Duluth. The breakfast and lunch menu are both so good! They have allergy friendly options as well. And you must walk away with an item from their bakery!
google avatar

Kamni M.

Yelp
The food here is amazing and it is such a cute little spot. The people here are truly kind and you can feel that the minute you walk in! We've been back a few times already and pro tip, if you go here please do yourself a favor and get the sausage and chorizo gravy. It is a curry based gravy that is out of this world! We licked the plate clean!

Amelia M.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped there after a wedding weekend and it did not disappoint. I am gluten free and ordered the Florentine Eggs Benedict. It was the best Benedict I've ever had. I am a sucker for "Miel" lattes and they had one of their own. Honey and coffee are the perfect pair. On the way out, I passed by the bakery counter and they had gf muffins, pies and cookies!!! I got the ginger giant cookie and the chocolate chip zucchini muffin. Both of them exceeded my expectations. The patio was a nice spot on a beautiful morning and I will the service was quick as well. Thanks for a great brunch and thinking about those with allergies! I will definitely be back!

Paul S.

Yelp
What a wonderful find. We ate here for breakfast and it was savory and delicious. I had the cowboy hash and it was a carefully constructed dish with brisket, potatoes, pickled red onions, jalapeños (not too much) and aioli,, topped with two lovely eggs. My husband had the wild rice sausage benidict, which was also top notch. I wish we had been able to go back for lunch or dinner. Try it. You won't regret it. Food A+. Service A+. Ambiance A.

Deanna M.

Yelp
From the ambiance to the food to the service! Outstanding as usual. If in Duluth, you should make this a spot to stop at! Enjoy!
google avatar

Robyn K.

Yelp
I'm always excited to enjoy brunch at Sara's whenever I'm visiting Duluth. I was happy to see their strong adherence to Covid protocols as not all Duluth establishments seem to be as committed to distancing and mask wearing. My boyfriend and I were there for Valentine's brunch. We had a Bloody Mary which was lovely and very fresh tasting and the pecan coffee which is perfectly toasted. They had a few specials but my heart was set on the Biscuits and Gravy as soon as I saw it. It was exactly what I look for - most Biscuit drowned in slightly spicy Sausage gravy with some fresh tomatoes and green onions. I had a basted egg on top and I finished the entire dish. My boyfriend has the BLT topped with a fried egg - the aioli in it is finger licking good! We were so full we didn't indulge in any dessert but it their sweets case looked impeccable as always. Staff was expedient, polite and clean!

Yelp
Our third trip back (on our third trip through Duluth and 2 months), and it does not disappoint! We love everything from the quirky decor to the excellent service, to the amazing farm-fresh, local, and delightfully prepared dishes. My personal favorite is the Biscuits & Chorizo Gravy... it's a dish I've never seen anywhere else, and when I first tried it, I was worried that the chorizo would be overpowering. I was wrong. It's the right combination of spice and herbaciousness... with fresh and flavorful tomatoes and delicious and perfectly baked biscuits. Served with their amazing coffee, it's the only thing I've ordered (my friends are more adventurous and have liked everything they've tried).
