Tl;dr: Eat at any of the many other Hawaiian places in town like Roxy's or 808 Grinds. I haven't been here since the owners converted this from Big's Chicken to this new Hawaiian concept because I *really* liked Big's Chicken. I finally decided to try it out to give it a fair shake and, man, I was just really disappointed. I had the mochiko chicken and kalbi ribs with the mac salad. The chicken was fine but the kalbi was pretty flavorless. The mac salad was fine but also nothing to write home about. I've been going to Roxy's and 808 Grinds for Hawaiian food for years now and they are better by far in terms of food quality. Roxy's has its problems in terms of how slow they can be but I'd rather wait and get better food than ever go here and deal with the awful parking situation for a mediocre plate. You'd think if you're going to replace an amazing smoked chicken joint with a Hawaiian restaurant, you'd at least match the quality of the other restaurants in the area. I don't ever see myself coming back here. RIP Big's, you died for this.

This was my first time trying this place. The poke bowl had very few pieces of fish, and the quality wasn’t as fresh as I had hoped. For $17, I expected a better portion and taste. There is Joy poke around the corner which is actually really good. The teriyaki chicken was tough and overcooked. Very disappointed with the food, especially for the price. I wouldn’t personally recommend it, but hopefully, they can improve their quality in the future.

First time customer and won’t be coming back. I love Hawaiian food but this is not it. They try their best and it’s their version of Hawaiian food but not even close to what we eat in Hawaii. The chicken was tough, salty, and the Mac salad is not good. The customer service wasn’t bad but their prices are very LA and I find it hard to believe that a plate cost $18. It’s more affordable and yummier in Hawaii. I don’t recommend this restaurant if you are looking for real authentic Hawaiian food.

I ordered curry bowl with chicken cutlet. Curry was bad. It wasn’t really Japanese I think. They don’t use coconut milk in Japanese curry I think. Only in south East Asian country’s curry, they use coconut milk. Also, it was too sweet. Usually when something is supposed to be savory, you gotta use the sugar just enough to attract the appetite but not to be tasted. I should’ve read the review, they seem bad. The chicken cutlet tastes alright. Don’t recommend the curry bowl, stick to Hawaiian stuff.

Three of us went and we all enjoyed our food. The ribs were excellent, the poke was great and loved the service. Parking is a bit of a challenge in this area so we went on a weeknight and found a spot after a few blocks. Always a treat to get some excellent Hawaiian food! Lots of outdoor seating and indoor seating as well.

Ate oh ate dinner on a Friday night. Friendly staff, food was fresh and tasted great, large portions. I ordered the kalua pork and cabbage, side salad (fresh) and 2 large scoops of rice (instead of salad you can get Mac salad). You order at the counter and they serve you at the table you select. They also have Maui Brewing POG hard seltzer, which was fresh and tasted great. They have nice decorations, staff was friendly and kind. Prices were very reasonable. Great to have Hawaiian style food when you can't get to Hawaii. They do have a large outdoor seating area. Beaverton location means parking can be challenging.

YUM!! Plenty of outside seating too! I had a Mochico chicken and teriyaki chicken combo plate because I couldn’t decide between the two. The chicken was fantastic. I don’t know which one I liked more. They both had fantastic flavor and we’re well cooked. I adore the house teriyaki sauce. The only thing I did not love was the pasta salad. it was pretty ok and I liked the carrots in it, but it really lacked flavor; It tasted like boiled pasta with mayo and carrots and a little bit of salt. The dish would have been wonderfully paired with a bit of coleslaw or some thing fresh. But otherwise it was really wonderful and I had enough leftover to eat it again today and it was great. I had a piña colada to drink (no rum) and it was YUMMY M. It was perfect with my meal and was very enjoyable. I paid just a smidge over $20 for my huge meal and my delicious drink🙂 We ate inside of the restaurant and it’s very clean and spacious. My food was served surprisingly fast. My lunch meat had fried rice with sausage in it and it was magnificent. I had a couple of bites and it was so incredibly flavorful. The only thing I did not like about the environment was the music. It was an ok mix of older alternative music, and then it turned into rock music, and it was just too much. Perhaps something a little less edgy would have made the atmosphere more relaxing and more enjoyable, and more festive. If you or your companion are sensitive to loud music, or if you become overstimulated because of hard rock type music, you’ll probably want to sit outside . But there’s lots and lots of outside seating. Restaurant is wheel chair accessible 😊

We had visited the Portland location before and weren't particularly impressed, but since a branch opened nearby, we decided to give it another try. The interior was much the same as Big Chicken, except for the fish mural covering the walls and the surfboards hanging from the ceiling. We ordered the Loco Moco and Mochiko Chicken. The Loco Moco sauce had a strong buttery taste rather than a traditional gravy flavor, and the egg was not as runny as a sunny-side-up egg should be, which I personally didn't prefer. The Mochiko Chicken wasn't very juicy, but it was decently tasty.😊

Yelp
Nice job on the menu change, I will miss the giant fried Chicken sandwich from Bigs. We really loved the two items we ordered, the Korean style chicken with Macaroni salad and a green salad side hit the spot. The dish is spicy, not to spicy that you want to pass this dish up, it had a lot of flavor and the serving size was easily enough for two. The second dish was a curry bowl with katsu chicken, a very nice blend, very filling and a lot of flavor. The inside of the location has not changed other than a more island theme. We ordered takeout and when we arrived the food was ready for us. Make sure to ask for some side dipping sauces they compliment the food. I am not following some of the other reviews. We will stop by again to continue to try the rest of the menu, we noticed some poke bowls to spam masubi.

Yelp
I ordered from here tonight through Uber eats about 7:30pm. My food was delivered around 8:40 3 of our 4 items were MISSING! We reached out to the driver and he said the bag felt light and he asked the woman at the restaurant if she was sure that was everything and she said yes. We called the restaurant multiple times with no answer. It's now after 9 with a limited selection of places still open. I will never order from here again. Y'all should of left Bigs here and kept this mess to yourself

Yelp
The food is ok. One thing the restaurant failed to informed their customers about SKYY Parking. When we pulled in and parked, we never saw any signs for pay to park. We got a $56 dollar parking fine in the mail with the camera capturing us pulling in and parked. In Beaverton, when did they start charging to park to eat. These restaurant need to kick these guys out or unless they are getting a kick back. I would not recommend this place and I hope they go out of business's. The food is over priced and it's too salty.

Yelp
If you were a fan of Big's chicken then I'm sure you could probably relate to the slight heart attack I had when I saw that their location in Beaverton was suddenly changed to "Ate-Oh-Ate"... thankfully it's the same owner and their food was still good. Got their mochiko chicken plate, which is always my go-to at any Hawaiian restaurant that will offer it--it was good, good breading and good fry on it, and went well with the Mac salad. Their teriyaki chicken also had good flavor. Restaurant is casual and chill, and has the same set up and FCFS seating like Big's had. Sounds like my take on it is a little more positive than what others are saying but *shrug* I had a positive experience!

Yelp
I think Ate-oh-Ate might be one of the more controversial businesses in Beaverton. People have strong opinions about the closing of the Beaverton location of Big's Chicken and, it seems, strong feelings about the food at Ate-oh-Ate. With all of that in mind, we wanted to check it out ourselves. Our first impression: the restaurant looks about the same aside from some cosmetic changes like a newly painted mural and different furniture. The overall layout is the same as Big's. We ordered the loco moco and Kalua pig plates. I liked the Kalua pig as the pork was smoky, tender, and not overly soggy or salty. I wish the Mac salad would be creamier, but overall I liked it. My fiancé ordered the loco moco and he wasn't crazy about it. He said it's "different" because it had a strong mushroom flavor like a cream of mushroom soup. As an Asian American, the mushroom taste didn't bother me, but I can see why it would be surprising for loco moco. We also ordered a slice of the butter mochi cake, and it was chewy, buttery, moist, and fluffy all at the same time. It was quite yummy I must say. Overall, I liked my Kalua pig plate and the butter mochi dessert. I would recommend both dishes.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Ate Oh Ate and it was just alright. Nothing I ate was stand out delicious. We came on a week night so ordering was fast and the food came out quick. I got a Frozen Limeade and a Mochiko Chicken Plate. The limeade was very icy so the lime flavor was a bit too subtle. The Mochiko Chicken was crispy and juicy but not that flavorful. There were several sauces on the table that you could add to your plate but all of the sauces were just okay, one of which I couldn't put my finger on what it was.

Yelp
Came here on day 2. So good! My favorite is the Korean chicken. Grilled and a Spicy Korean red sauce. Love it. The pork wasn't quite as good as the Burnside location. I'll give them a pass for it being day 2. The teriyaki chicken hot ravs, as did the Mochico chicken. So glad they are in beaverton @

Yelp
Ate oh ate took over for Bigs Chicken. The space didn't really change too much from the bigs chicken. I felt like the food was fine it just satisfies the cravings. The chicken katsu was pretty thin and the mochiko chicken needed sauce for flavor. I went close to when they first opened at the location so they might be working out the kinks. The staff were pretty nice. Parking is mainly on the street.

Yelp
What I found interesting was that some of the people working there today looked familiar when it was called Biggs Chicken. With all the Hawaiian places nearby I don't know why they changed their name and format. So I really thought I'd be coming into a good fine, but I left disappointed. Try the teriyaki chicken and the Shoyu chicken. Both were dry and lacked any real flavor except for the sauce that you would add. The Shoyu chicken looked very unappealing. It was boneless chicken thighs but the look and rubbery texture reminded me of organ meat. No flavor and over-cooked. Large eating area both inside and out but a "no" for me.

Yelp
I recently visited this new Hawaiian restaurant in downtown Beaverton that replaced Big's Chicken, but unfortunately, it didn't quite meet my expectations, especially when compared to other local options. I ordered the pork katsu and chicken teriyaki plate. The chicken was bland, and the pork katsu was disappointingly thin. For sides, I chose the "Korean" salad over the Mac salad. However, it turned out to be just iceberg lettuce and radish, lacking any distinctive Korean flavors. Typically, I look forward to taking leftovers home from Hawaiian restaurants, but this time, I left feeling only half full.

Yelp
Kinda surprised at some of the negative reviews to date. I mean, yeah, I'm not dropping it a 5 star review (yet) but this wasn't a 1 or 2 star experience on either of my visits. Yes I miss Big's Chicken. I will also admit I burned out on Big's. When they first visited I was there a LOT. I couldn't get enough of their boneless grilled chicken thighs and all the sauces. So, it was with a bit of sadness, but not much, I saw them transition to Ate Oh Ate. I've been there twice within 2 weeks. On my first visit I had a shoyu chicken plate minus mac and the wife had the Korean chicken. Service was speedy, food was hot and the whole experience was quite good. My most recent visit I had a split plate of korean and teriyaki chicken. Same deal, great service, food was good and the atmosphere, while identical to Big's, is perfectly fine. I'm not sure what would prompt me to bump this to a 5 star review, but there's more on the menu to discover, and we'll be back!

Yelp
It's nice to see that they moved into this new location (I'll miss Big's Chicken though). The food here is just as good as I remember it being, maybe better because I was hungry. The place is still pretty spacious, and not many changes were done. You still order at the counter, and they will bring your food when it's ready. We ordered a spam musubi, Loco Moco, and a 2 plate combo of kalbi and katsu. The Loco moco was great, especially their shitake gravy. I can just eat that with rice and call it good. The kalbi was flavorful, and the katsu was nice and crispy. Their mac salad was also pretty good. Overall, it was a great experience.

Yelp
It looks like a Hawaiian restaurant, and their food looks like Hawaiian food, but lacks a certain authenticity. Moreover, to me, lacks the flavor and palette of Hawaiian food. We tried the Loco Moco and Mochiko Chicken; typical staples and watermarks for Hawaiian food. In both cases, I found the flavor and texture to be dry and suprisingly bland. Their Loco Moco patty was plain- seemingly unseasoned hamburger with a mushroom based gravy. The cashier did not ask me how I preferred my egg, which was a red flag. It was overdone. The mochiko chicken was simillarly dry, with a side mac salad that was strangely watery. There are other options within a reasonable distance and better pricing- I struggle to see how this restaurant will maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Yelp
The problem isn't that Big's is gone--it would still be here if people didn't burn out on the concept or straight-up abandon it for the carts. The issue is that there's just so much better Hawaiian in the area. It's been a long time since Roxy's and Hawaiian Time were the only options in car-bound, strip-mall Beaverton. This town is home to 808 Grindz, Hapapino, Shaka Brah and Kuli Kuli. Palenaka's up in the pod might be the best Hawaiian joint west of the tunnels. Even if you're out in the boonies, Hawaiian Kine, Kaos, other 808 Grindz (if that building ever reopens), Habu and Kama'aina have you covered. Ate Oh Ate is perfectly fine if you went to the Laurelhurst and are craving Hawaiian and feeling lazy. But man, I forget exactly who they're making this for and what their palate is like. This is a fairly bland, socks-and-sandals tourist interpretation of better menus just steps away. I understand why management would think this concept would fare better in Beaverton than Southern fried chicken that clearly reached the end of its shelf life, but this is a disappointing failure of good intentions.

Yelp
Mid food at best. Got the fried rice with Portuguese sausage. There was celery in the rice... odd but the sausage tasted more like Vienna sausage from a can that was boiled instead of friend. I like my sausage crispy and spicy. Not sure what brand they used but it was a miss. Service was nice so can't knock them for that but food is not.

Yelp
Pretty alright. Maybe my expectations were too high after having frequented the Big's Chicken this replaced. I had hoped for something similarly inventive, but instead found it to be just basic. Kalua pork was tender but rather salty and about 30% cabbage. It came with a vinegar sauce that was fine. Mac salad tasted like Mac salad: plain and fatty in a comforting sort of way, but not necessarily positive or negative. Probably won't be back--too many other good options in that neck of the woods.

Big T.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the worst Hawaiian food we've eaten in Portland/Beaverton area. While the employees seem to think highly of the food, we did not. Spam musubi should NEVER be served lukewarm nor cold, yet that's what was presented to us. When we asked why it wasn't warm/hot, the totally uninterested employee told us that it's their normal for it to be barely warm because it's premade and sitting under a heat lamp. There was never an offer to get us one that was warmer or something else off the menu. We had to push the issue with someone with more authority to even get something different. Cold spam musubi is not something anyone should feed themselves nor their loved ones. The loco moco got the "loco" right in the sense that anyone would be crazy to call their gravy and patty tasteful; at least they didn't screw up the egg and rice. They also got the first half of "shiitake" right when describing their gravy. Overall a gigantic fail. Don't let this place confuse you with the real "808 Grinds" which is 1000x better than this imposter.
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Above average Hawaiian food with the added benefit of a nice little bar. Service was good and prices right in range. People will probably complain that it's not Big's Chicken anymore but that's hardly fair.

Yelp
The food here is RUBBISH! I ordered mochiko chicken. They said it's super crispy. This thing is super soggy. Mac salad sucks. Teriyaki chicken & fried rice was eh. I spent about $70 for rubbish food. And these fakas forgot my musubi which I already know is going to suck anyways. You guys want REAL Hawaiian food. Check out 808 Grinds instead. Easy access and plenty parking.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Been in a few times since the inexplicable change from Big's , which I really liked. First visit - the teriyaki chicken was pretty good, but very similar to a handful of other places around Beaverton. The mac salad was dry - not as good as Roxy's or 808 Grinds but you can sub that out for a green salad instead. Second visit -- had the shoyu chicken and couldn't finish it. Dry, flavorless and visually it looked very unappealing - like a piece of brown rubber. That will probably be my last visit.
