Stayed here for one night and it was overall a good experience! Docked one star because the A/C system was very old and didn’t work well. It was cooler outside than in our room so we were quite warm. While the room/tvs felt a little dated the room was clean which is what matters most! The staff upon check-in could have been more friendly/helpful. I could barely hear the gentleman checking me in and he didn’t offer me any helpful information (direction of elevators, check out time, etc). I receive a better welcome when I stay at far less fancy hotels. But the valet staff were amazing and provided great service!

I am writing to formally express our disappointment regarding a recent stay at your hotel. I had arranged accommodations for seven executives from my company, based on the positive personal experience my husband and I had during a previous visit. Unfortunately, this stay did not meet the same standard and left my team extremely dissatisfied. While the rooms were noted to be spacious and mostly clean, several significant issues were reported: The overall cleanliness was subpar. One executive noted that neither the rooms nor the hotel itself smelled fresh. The carpeting appeared outdated and in need of deep cleaning. The elevators were unreliable, requiring one of our team members to call for the service elevator on two separate occasions. Alarming concerns were raised about unidentified liquid dripping from the walls. There were also mentions of a possible water contamination issue, which is deeply troubling. Although the lobby was described as presentable and the bar area as decent, these features did not make up for the poor overall experience. It is unfortunate, as we had hoped to include your hotel among our preferred lodging recommendations for visiting executives. Regrettably, due to this experience, we will no longer consider your property for future bookings. I would appreciate a prompt response regarding how these issues are being addressed, especially the potential health and safety concerns.

I called ahead of my arrival to ask if early check-in was a possibility. I was told yes and to the front desk upon arrival and I’d be put in line for the first available room. When I arrived, the woman at the front desk was lovely and very helpful. I settled in to work from the lobby while waiting for a room to open up. About 40 minutes later, I was approached by an older man who appeared to be a manager. While I absolutely understand and appreciate the importance of maintaining security in a hotel, this was not that. His approach was unnecessarily aggressive, rude, and carried sexist and ageist undertones that made me feel extremely uncomfortable. He questioned whether I was truly doing business (which I was) and told me there were time limits in the business center, so I relocated to the main lobby. Once there, he continued to watch me closely, essentially stalking me, and told me I had to sit on a specific bench near the elevators, as though I were doing something wrong just by existing in a public space. Shortly after that, someone else came over to tell me they were checking if a room was available, so clearly, I was following the exact protocol I was advised to. This treatment felt terrible and completely unnecessary, especially as a paying guest who proactively called ahead to manage the possibility of an early arrival. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable waiting to check into a hotel, and it’s not an experience I’d ever want to repeat.

Wow. What a great place. Rooms are beautiful. Location is perfect. The complimentary shuttle bus will take you practically anywhere there is something fun to do downtown. Will stay again. We took it round trip to the Roostertail for Yacht Rock. That event alone with a stay at the Antheneum will become an annual get away for us.

We had an amazing girls' trip, and choosing this hotel was one of the best decisions we made! It was conveniently located near all the places we wanted to visit. The beds were super comfortable, and the customer service was outstanding.||A special shoutout to Cory and Captain for taking such great care of us—driving us around the city and making sure we returned safely to the hotel each night. They were kind, courteous, and even shared some fascinating Detroit history during our various excursions.||The front desk staff was also incredibly accommodating. When I return to Detroit, this hotel will definitely be my go-to choice.||The only minor issue I encountered was the lack of an exhaust fan in the bathroom.

Good location for a Tigers game or anything else downtown. The hotel is nice but dated. The staff was very responsive and friendly (everyone we interacted with). Woke up to gunshots outside at 3 a.m.

Oh my goodness, from the moment we stepped through the door, we were treated so well. We were in Detroit for the Barry Manilow concert and spent the night. The bellman who escorted us to our room was so kind and so friendly. The room was absolutely amazing and luxurious. It went beyond our expectations. We enjoyed a pre-concert drink at the hotel bar - amazing!! Our shuttle driver was so much fun and played right along with us crazy ladies heading to the concert. Every single moment of our time at your wonderful hotel was so just perfect. Every single worker in your establishment greeted us with a smile and really acted happy to have us as guests. Thank you so much to everyone at the Atheneum for making our stay in Detroit truly amazing. We will be back!!

Google
Gorgeous hotel. Great rooms. Disgusting front desk worker though. Told us to book our room through Expedia and then denied the reservation. It was almost 4am by the time we were able to get a room and he kicked us out so we were stuck outside with no seating in the middle of downtown Detroit. Tried to reason with the worker to just simply do whatever we could to get a room and he has no intent in helping anyone other than himself. Old bald dude who works night shift front desk is ruining the image of a great hotel

Yelp
The Atheneum Suite Hotel in Detroit is a fantastic choice for a luxurious stay with a touch of elegance. The all-suite accommodations are spacious and beautifully decorated, providing plenty of room to relax and enjoy. The location in Greektown is perfect, with easy access to great restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment. The staff is friendly and attentive, making sure all your needs are met during your stay. The marble bathrooms and large whirlpool tubs are a lovely touch that adds to the upscale feel of the hotel. The only downside is that the hotel can feel a bit dated in some areas, and parking can be a bit of a hassle during busy times. However, the overall experience makes up for these minor issues. If you're looking for a convenient and comfortable stay in downtown Detroit, the Atheneum Suite Hotel is definitely worth considering.

Yelp
My husband wanted to have a quick stay-cation and booked us a room at Atgeneum Suite Hotel. We were both rather excited when we arrived. The lobby is huge and we'll decorated with plenty of places to sit. We were able to check in early, which was nice. We opted to park our car in a pay to park lot kitty corner from the hotel, as it was only $12/day versus $35 for valet. We headed up to our room, which was quite large. We had a separate living room with a TV, and a king bed with TV. The bathroom was large, and a little dated if I'm being honest. As we walked out of the hotel on our way to find some food, we noticed a hand full of people checking in. Still, it did not at all appear to be booked up. When we got back, we enjoyed the large bath and watched TV. So far, so good. The bed was uncomfortable and somewhat lumpy in areas, but we did our best to make it work. Then, at 11:30pm, we were awoken by a very loud group of folks that had checked into the room directly next to us, that shared a wall. They were yelling, banging doors, and whatnot. It sounded like they were in our room with us. It was insufferable. They did not quiet down until about 4am. My husband was so upset from the lack of sleep due to the folks on the other side of the wall. We tried for a few hours of sleep, then left around 6:30am. It's sad that the hotel staff decided to place those folks right next door when it was obvious that other rooms were vacant on the same floor. We will avoid this place in the future.

Yelp
We have stayed at this venue several times over the years. It is a nice, unique hotel, centrally located if you are attending a sporting event in Detroit. The rooms are all essentially suites. Very large and plenty of room. As far as we know, most have a separate sitting area with couch, chair and TV, away from a large bedroom which also has a TV. Bathrooms are nice with extra large tub and showers. The rooms are a little dated in some aspects. This time, it does appear they have installed new carpet, beds and appointments, since the last time we stayed. Beds are very comfortable and the rooms are squeaky clean as is this entire property. Some areas in the rooms could use a refresh of new paint. There are 2 restaurant options in this Hotel. Symposia is a little more formal/upscale. Then there is the A Bar adjacent to the lobby. This was remodeled a few years back and is very nice and gets busy. We chose to eat in The A Bar as we wanted to watch a Basketball Game. Our server was kind of enough to put that game on for us, so we could watch it while we ate. ( They could use a couple more TV's in different areas) We started with the Chips and Salsa, a tasty cheese blend that was very tasty. Not your typical queso. We then ordered the Wings with Buffalo Sauce. These were nice size, meaty wings, good quality and taste. We also had the seasoned Shrimp with toasted baguette. The Shrimp were nice size, perfectly prepared with a mild spiced, zesty seasoning. We would order all of these items again. Our server Nick was phenomenal. Very personable and attentive. Worth checking out if looking for a nice play to stay while in Detroit.

Yelp
Had a great stay this week at the Atheneum Hotel. The bed was really comfortable and the rooms much better than Hollywood Casino. Like much better for the same price or close. Big rooms and friendly staff!

Yelp
I found myself staying here for 3 nights for a conference in downtown Detroit. I had a fine stay here but one that falls somewhat short of a five-star experience. First, the positives. The room is absolutely massive. I don't recall having stayed in a room of that size in a very, very long time. Second, cleanliness. The room was well-cleaned, and the bathtub was clean and inviting enough that I ended up enjoying a relaxed bath twice in the span of three days - something I rarely get to do at my house. Third, the presence of a courtesy shuttle that was available to take hotel guests anywhere within a short distance of the hotel. Fourth and finally, they have an in-house restaurant. I had dinner on the first night that I got there, and it was great. The spicy chicken sandwich at $15 is one of the best bargains that I have recently come across in an era of rampant inflation. Along with taxes and tips, my HUGE dinner which likely added a full inch to my ever-growing waistline, came to only $28! Now, the reasons for taking off a star. First, the staff could have been more polite. I found the shuttle drivers in general, but especially the one I had on my very last day to be quite brusque. Also, the lady who checked me in on the first day should have indicated that there was going to be a hold for $300 - $100 per each night of stay - but I don't believe she had pointed that out. It is only when I came back to the reception puzzled by why I had been charged more than $800 for my stay that she informed me of that rule. Second, they missed my wake-up call on the very first night that I stayed at the hotel. I had asked for a wake-up call at 8:00 but I don't believe that ever came. The third and final point is a minor one, but I am noting here in my review. For the second morning that I was here, I requested an in-room breakfast for 8:00 a.m. The breakfast did not come at 8:00 but it came closer to 8:15 seriously inconveniencing me. The person who brought up my food indicated that she was there at 7:55 but because I was not yet out of bed, I don't think I ever heard her knock. However, in my estimation, she should not have waited until 8:15 to bring the meal but should have delivered the meal at 8:00, as was requested. Finally, I had used up the slip in my room to request the breakfast that morning. Even though I stayed for one more night, the hotel did not provide me with another slip on which I could put in an order for in-room breakfast for the last morning I was there. All in all, while I had a fine stay at The Atheneum and would be perfectly happy to consider staying here again, to the extent that the hotel wants to get outstanding reviews from guests - as opposed to ones that are merely good- it could train its staff better and nudge them/ encourage them to be more polite and courteous to their guests.

Yelp
Absolute amazing hotel! We booked this hotel fairly last minute and I was very impressed with the staff, the food and our room. Right when we pulled up, we were greeted with the valet. They opened the door and asked if they could take our luggage. The service was very friendly and extremely fast. When we got to our room, we were wowed by the size, layout and all the accommodations. They had a great room service menu and the food was unbelievable. Amazing hotel and fantastic staff!

Yelp
I had a splendid time during my stay at the Athenaeum Hotel. I was only there for two nights but that was long enough for me to get a good feel of the place. I arrived the evening of my first night and the check-in process was a breeze. The lobby was beautiful and included plenty of seating as well as a nice bar. My room itself was beautifully decorated, had all the amenities I needed, and the view was nice. The only issue I ran into was the hot water in the sink wasn't working, it was spitting out water really choppy and wouldn't get warm. No worries, except for my face being cold when I washed it. During my stay I ordered room service both nights because I was so busy during the stay that it was the best way to go when I was finally able to grab dinner. The first night I got mac and cheese and a salad and the mac was on point. The next night I ordered the salmon and it was delicious. I'll also add that the valet was quick and everyone from the receptionist to the gentleman that delivered my food to the room were lovely. I would definitely stay again.

Yelp
I stayed here for a brief work trip, but had a phenomenal stay! It was super late when I arrived, but checking in was a breeze. I walked through the spacious lobby with a very high ceiling, and loved the tunes they were playing. I went up to my room, and loved how open the floors are, especially near the elevators. It's not narrow extra bright (or dim) corridors like some hotels. I absolutely loved how spacious my suite was. The bathroom and tub were nice and big, and the office desk was nestled next to a rather cool and giant pillar in my room. My bed was huge and comfy! I worked out for the one full day I was there -- when I asked about the gym they have, they said "it's not really a gym..." but yes it is. They undersold it! They have a bunch of weights, cardio machines, and a bench. Don't really need anything else unless it's gonna be crowded in there -- and I was the only one there. Got a good workout in! Now, it may be tricky to find, because it doesn't stand out like fitness centers typically do -- just know it's on the second floor. Checkout was as easy as checking in... I was sad to have to leave, but I really loved the vibe of the place. They have a barber shop and other things on the first floor, by the way! If I could suggest an improvement, it would be for accessible water stations throughout -- there was one in the gym, but it came with the paper cones and it was still a faucet, not filter.

Yelp
There a lot to like here: - Excellent location, right in the heart of the city. Walking distance to all of the stadiums, Greektown casino, restaurants and businesses. - Easy parking through Valet, or self parking right across the street. Be careful what you leave in the car as a guest's car had been broken into in the garage the night we checked out (they apparently left their possessions in clear view) - Great room size and amenities - A divided bedroom area with a separate living room with a sofa. A separate TV in each. The view was fine. The bathroom is huge (plenty of counter space) and the shower pressure and temperature were excellent. - While there is no on-site market and the water in the room was $5/bottle, there is a great little convenience market just two blocks away. We were able to get drinks and snacks. - Pricing is consistent with the area. The weekend we were there, football, baseball and hockey were are in-play on the same weekend so the town was active, and the prices a bit higher than normal. Booking was easy on the direct site - We booked through Expedia. - Service was good throughout, and security is ever-present. We felt safe during our stay. While the main restaurant was closed, they did offer room service, seating for meals served near the bar, and there are so many great restaurants in the area you really don't have to eat on-site.

Yelp
What a beautiful experience we had staying at Atheneum Suite Hotel!! We stayed for 5 nights for a funeral. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure your stay is so pleasant! They are friendly and so helpful. Our house keeping staff member Jasmine left us a kind note and was always so helpful and friendly. Cory, the door man was also always so happy, helpful and kind. He consistently went out of his way to make each day stress free. He always put a smile on our face. Angie, at The Symposium restaurant was also so kind and helpful. The staff in the restaurant were fantastic too. Eric our server is a sommelier. His knowledge of wine was incredible. This hotel is so fortunate to have such an amazing staff!! The lobby was warm, welcoming and large. It is attractively decorated. The rooms are very clean and spacious. We loved the walkways to the rooms which felt like an atrium. The room has a refrigerator, coffee maker, iron and ironing board, which was so helpful for such a long stay. The food and service in the bar was outstanding. I highly recommend eating in the hotels main restaurant, The Symposium. The food and service were a 10!! It's a meal I will never forgot. I highly recommend this hotel!!

Yelp
Fabulous hotel!!! I didn't actually realize it was a "suite" hotel, I was rushing while I booked. So, I was extremely surprised to see my HUGE luxurious room!!!! The decor and vibe of this hotel is amazing... It was beautifully decorated for Christmas and looked just fabulous. The staff even offered to photograph me and my friend! So nice. I ordered room service two times, and both times it was quickly delivered with outstanding service. The food was AMAZING! I went down to the desk the morning of checkout and was easily granted late checkout. I should also add, my valet and check in process was under 5 minutes. Overall, the location of this hotel is perfect in terms of getting around by foot or car. I loved the energy of the hotel which felt professional and elegant. I felt very safe and secure in my room which was fully equipped to meet my needs. There was no robe though, and I was sad about that! The tub also wasn't working right, I couldn't get water to not drain out of the tub. So much for a bath... but hopefully that doesn't usually happen. Still giving 5 stars, because the experience was phenomenal and I WILL be back!!

Yelp
Tucked into Greektown with great staff! Good food! Nice bar, easy to get to, and stay!!!

Yelp
From the time we checked into the Atheneum with Lakesha our experience was superb. The staff's response time to our needs and their willingness to help. The Front desk was friendly and helpful Darnell, Kemp, Fairy and Leo all made our stay there wonderful. Our room was clean and the bed slept wonderful. Great job! Forgot to mention Captain Thony!! Great personality

Yelp
No idea why the bad reviews. My room was flawlessly clean, and really cute, and the whole hotel had a great vibe. If someone's upset it's loud... it's literally in the most popular section of downtown, known for its night life. Not sure how you can really be that upset if said night life keeps you up when you know it's right there. That said, I didn't hear anything excessive when I was there. Only complication with the hotel was booking a block group rate-- they're really tight on their requirements for it (non-refundable, 2-night minimum), which made it hard for people in my group. Other than that, I would absolute stay there again. Highly recommend the king room end unit.

Yelp
We stayed at the Atheneum last weekend for a family wedding and had a great time. The main reason was the STAFF - they were excellent ! Everyone was great - valets, bellmen, waitresses, front desk staff, maintenance, housekeeping, managers, etc. I can honestly say that the Atheneum had the best staff of any hotel I've ever been to - they were friendly, helpful, efficient, and courteous - and they went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. I want to single Corey out as he went out of his way to help us and he was awesome. :-) The hotel restaurant (the one in the lobby - where the bar is) was great. Best pancakes I've ever had! And we loved all of our breakfasts and lunches there (we ate dinner elsewhere). Great cocktails, too - especially the Moscow mules! The only issue we had was the first night - our room got very warm (and I'm a woman in menopause but it just wasn't me - my teen sons were hot, too). We told the maintenance department and they fixed it right away. The hotel could probably use a renovation - but it was clean, the rooms had a lot of space (lots of room to move around), we liked the decor, and everything was great. Just could use a bit of touching up to make it look a bit more polished.

Makenzie M.

Yelp
The staff were friendly and informative upon arrival. The bar had prompt service with fun cocktails which were expertly mixed. The room was super luxe, it was clean and neatly decorated. The color scheme neutral/modern and calming yet chic-similarly to the rest of the hotel. The information books were a nice touch. I liked the separation of the sitting area from the rest of the suite. The tub was large enough for a 6'5" human to have a soak and it was clean. Some of the bathroom finishings were slightly dated but everything was clean. The steps down to the bedroom added to the coziness, there was something soothing about being tucked away and nestled lower than the sitting space. Standard hotel bed and linens, comfy and crisp. The headboard being backlit added a luxurious touch. We ordered room service breakfast and received a call upon delivery, it was left on the door handle so no contact was nice. Everything we ordered was absolutely scrumptious. I recommend the fluffy waffle and buttery, crispy hash browns. We did not use the shuttle service but it is a major bonus. I'd definitely stay again. I do wish that they provided robes and slippers, but if I return I'll bring my own. The lack of 5th star is due to the aged shower, toilet, sink, and some of the caulk.

Yelp
OMG this place has changed since I first visited back in 2007 - just wow! the lobby the bar and the amazing bar staff are so great! I absolutely will stay here the next time im in Detroit! Your renovation is superb - so luxe and so very worth every penny! Great energy, great space for a classy event and so very fun bar staff! We were laughing about random things for hours!

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend last weekend. I went to the lobby to find out about local restaurants. On my way back to my room, as I was still in the lobby level another elevator came down. Mr. Darnell who was going to get on the elevator looked at me and said I am going to ride with you beautiful. I was not going to bother myself to post a review, but looking at the other people's reviews, I see that Darnell has been mentioned in other harassing comment. My beauty is for my boyfriend and not for Darnell. I had to stop my boyfriend from teaching Darnell the lesson of his life, but the least I can do is to confirm other people's reviews of harassing behavior of Darnell. Be aware people ..

Farideh W.

Yelp
I was there last week for the game. I am a Muslim woman from Lebanon and I wear Hijab.i had a very good time that day until one of the valet people, a black man, Darnell, said something about the terrorists and the black color they wear. Yes Mr. Darnell, my Higab was black, but not every one from that part of the world is a terrorist. Shame on you Mr. Darnell. You are very ignorant.

Yelp
This is a decent sized hotel in the heart of Greek town. The ballroom is a decent sized and can accommodate a large group. I haven't ever stayed in a room here as of yet but have only been here for weddings. It's has an interesting blend of old school wall murals with modern day globe lights and high backed lobby chairs and more contemporary flooring as well. The staff were attentive and friendly as were the bartenders.

Yelp
Athena the mighty Goddess of Wisdom and War needs to blot down to Greektown for some surgery to the Atheneum. I'm a local Detroiter, old enough to remember when this hotel was built. I met P Diddy AND Biggie Smalls in the lobby in the late 90's! It was my first jacuzzi suite experience as a young dating gal (no, not with P Diddy nor Biggie). The A Bar with bartender Merv was the spot! Ahhhh, fond and fun memories. So when the bf suggested we get a room after the Katt Williams concert, It took me back to the good ole days when downtown Detroit was more like Atlanta, less like...... Portland? The lobby is remodeled and looks good. That's where it ends. The newly renovated bar was closed at 11:30 on a Saturday night (advertised to be open til 1am). Room service (also advertised to be open til 1 am), just never bothered to answer the phone, despite the front desk assuring us they would answer. We scrambled down the street to Golden Fleece before they closed at midnight, where they graciously served us at 5 mins to close. But the room?! The rooms are in desperate need of renovation. The wood furniture in the suite was so worn. I think I recognized high heel scuff marks I may have imparted back in '97! The hot tub worked well and I was happy about that. A nice touch would be to include special pillows for the tub and robes, maybe even with some Grecian gold detail? - this after the remodel of course. Look, I want the Atheneum to rule downtown again, victorious over all of the franchises invading from outside. But until that day comes, either close some of those raggedy rooms, or offer deep discounts. We still paid too dollar and received both service and quality befitting "commoners."

Thomas G.

Yelp
From booking to arrival the service was perfect. Every staff member I came in touch with was professional and courteous. Valet service was on point. My gripe would be that there was no breakfast offered other than room service. I never ate in the hotel restaurant although I should have because I was challenged to find top notch dining in walking distance. My room was big with two televisions and a enormous shower. Bathroom was dated but clean and met my standards. Room service addressed my room daily like clockwork. If I ever frequent Detroit again, I know where to stay.

Yelp
We stayed Nov 6-7th at the Atheneum in Detroit. We had traveled for the MCBA state finals at Ford Field. The hotel was close and a good price for the area. We stayed on the 6th floor. We stayed in a double queen suite. The room was spacious. When you enter there is a room with a couch, coffee table, two side tables, leather like chair, dresser with large screen TV, desk with chair and still a lot of space. Three lamps plus overhead lighting. The couch does not fold out but was big enough my 12 year old slept on it. Front desk was quick to send up a sheet, pillow, and blanket when asked. There is a mini fridge inside the dresser under the TV. There is a glass block wall between the living room space and the main hallway. Interesting but was a bit disconcerting when you would see shadows walking by and it kept the room from ever being dark when you slept in there. There is a hallway with a door so you can shut off the two sides. Hallway has a large mirrored closet with ironing board and iron. Also a wall safe with key and three hangers. There is a shelf with a mini coffee maker and mirror. The bathroom was right there. It was quite large. Had a huge tub (not whirlpool) and a good shower. Strong shower head and lots of hot water. Only one sink so there was tons of counter space. But the wall around the bathroom to the sleeping area is glass block again. Thus when you turned on the lights in the bathroom (of which the switches are in the hallway, not actually inside the bathroom) it lights up the sleeping area. Did not thrill my 16 year old when I got up earlier than she did. And you can see the person in the showers shadow. I don't care, but might be awkward if you are staying for a work thing with a coworker. Their are 4 steps down to the sleeping area. The bed was firm, nice sheets. One night stand between the beds. Two lamps. Another dresser with a second large screen tv. Another leather like chair. A HUGE floor to ceiling window. The color scheme was a nice blue and brown. The carpet was plush. The lobby was nice with lots of seating. Lots of elevators, collection of 4 so they were quick. There is a bar in the lobby. They had food but we did not eat there. The hotel is a great location. We could walk to a ton of restaurants. Casino was super close. Even Ford field was a doable walk. There is a parking structure across the street. $25 for the night. They also offered valet for $28.

Yelp
Spacious, clean rooms. A little outdated but a good value and a great location in Greektown. I have always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The area can be loud at night so you may hear people in the streets and alleys partying. The valet parking is a big plus. I stay here every time I am in Detroit!

Yelp
Booked this hotel and even though I read about reviews of the hotel being old and outdated. I truly enjoyed my stay of 5 days. The rooms are nice and big, bathroom is big and nice too. Cleaning services are excellent and beds are comfortable. I liked that there is 4 elevators in the hotel... everything is walking distance. There is shuttle service to the stadium which is great. Staff is very cordial and friendly. Great place to stay! Cons-- the noise from the street and I had a noisy air conditioning/heater. Thank God, I brought some melatonin and slept like a baby every night . I will definitely stay in this hotel again. Smoke free too. Price could be a bit cheaper per night just because the hotel is not updated.

Yelp
I'm currently staying at the Anthenem Suites Hotel and how I wish I was at a Westin, Ritz, or or a Marriott property like I'd planned but friends that are in town are staying here. I get the nostalgia of old time decor, etc but you MUST be serious about the upkeep! There is a USED washcloth over the shower bar that neither me or my partner put there...gross! The walls are disgusting. I used Clorox wipes to wipe down the door handles, remotes, anything we could pick up. The bathroom floors don't look to have been steam cleaned since the erecting of the building, cracks and stains. I used a hand towel and used my foot to go over the floor to pickup the hair (that wasn't ours) off the floor...again GROSS. For the rate we pay and the pictures they post online I had high expectations coming from Washington, D.C. The only good thing is the bed. It's sufficient. Can't wait to checkout.

Yelp
The rooms were in pretty bad shape. The shower water pressure would fluctuate from OK to dripping, the walls and carpets looked like they needed cleaning, and there was water leaking into our room. The customer service also wasn't great. Don't think I'll stay here if I were to visit Detroit again.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed there June 26th 2021 for part of our anniversary. Room service was very nice and fast..but we got sick about an hour after we ate. Also, there were 4 wedding parties staying in the hotel that weekend. After midnight, hotel staff basically gave up on keeping anyone quiet, so it was loud all night with screaming and partying on 3 floors. We checked in at 3pm and we checked out at around 4am. We also found something smeared on the inside of the lamp shade and then what I hope was water coming from the window frames...We paid 500 dollars for that room and it was a waste. Called three times over the course of a week to speak to management about it, so far all calls have been dodged or met with "our manager is very busy, can we take your number to call you back?" With no call backs.. Don't bother staying here, it's not worth your time or money.

Yelp
If you are looking for a hotel downtown.... stay clear of the Atheneum Suite Hotel. I had the worst experience on my wedding weekend and we had over 30 rooms booked. Absolutely no respect or courtesy. First, my room was old, dusty, and had mold in the shower. Second, my room key was deactivated at least 3 times. On my wedding night we were locked out of our room for over 45 minutes when we should have been enjoying our party and friends/family. When my husband went downstairs the head of security told him if he didn't like it to go somewhere fucking else. Third, employees were rude and my cousin had a gun drawn on him outside the main floor elevator as there was lots of drama and police in lobby area, not what I call relaxing. They did not clean the rooms on daily basis and when asked about it, the front desk brought up towels and threw them at my sister. I do not advise other brides or anyone at that matter to use this hotel. I have reached out multiple times with no response to my concerns!

Yelp
I've really only stayed overnight downtown Detroit once that I can remember, so I enlisted the help from a friend. She recommended this place due to its location, price and a few amenities. I was planning on visiting the 3 big casinos downtown and this place was fairly close to all 3 so I looked into it. Location: Yep, right downtown. Greektown actually hence the name duh. It was close to everything we wanted soooo.....check. Price: Yep, it was cheaper than actually staying IN one of the casino rooms. I booked it through Expedia and burned a few points. I got the deluxe suite for less than a standard room at the casino. Another check. Amenities: Yep, #1, parking was $25 for the night which included come and go availability. The parking garages in the area won't let you leave without charging you again. #2 There's also a free shuttle service. Gotta tip the driver though. We call the hotel and they call him to pick up. We never waited more than 15 - 20 minutes which isn't bad when you don't have to worry about drinking or parking. The shuttle runs until about midnight. That's a check. I booked this place and we had a good time. Nice place, fairly friendly staff. A few odds and ends wrong kinda show the 3 star average rating. Some light fixtures were falling down/apart. Desk staff didn't really explain much about the hotel (elevator locations, shuttle, restaurant, valet, nothing but here's your key) I didn't rate it 3 star for a bad reason really cause I'd stay here again. It just wasn't anything that stood out as special.

Yelp
Stayed here for a Red Wings game and had a great stay until our house maid stole my husbands watch from our room. After we called five plus times knowing she took it- still nothing was done about it and we now see our I watch moving around Detroit. 15/10 would not recommend. Won't be staying here or suggesting.

Yelp
What terrible customer service and management. Room was large and nice... but it took 30 min to check in.... Not enough staff and no order to the long line. People cutting in from all over. A glass of wine costs $15 in a bar where you have to beg to get a drink at the bar after waiting a long time .. We asked for later check out when checked in... told to call in am. We call in am and were told "we are trying to get everyone out of here". (Twice!) When i expressed my disappointment with this and the other issues, I was put on hold, then the most RUDE manager came on. HE would not even let me get 1/2 a sentence out before repeatedly cutting me off. This is the service you get for 500 a night??????

Yelp
Great overall hotel from checkin until check out. Andre greeted us as soon as we arrived and Keno took care us for the night as our shuttle driver/tour guide. Rooms are huge, a littlw outdated but hey your in downtown Detroit so embrace it. Bathroom is massive and so is the shower. Lobby is very beautiful, and the ambiance of the place was spectacular. Next time I am in Detroit this will be my first choice.

Yelp
My daughter and I stayed at this hotel to have a day to relax and sleep before we went to the airport. In all my years of traveling, I have never been so disgusted and disappointed. There were weddings going on and due to the way the floors are all open to below and lobby, we literally had to listen to music with speakers, drunk people screaming and shouting till 3:30am. When I say we could not sleep one moment was an understatement. Then let's not talk about the how bad the windows were by the bed. Nightclub was painfully loud, drunk people outside and even 4 floors up, I could hear clear conversations- if the windows were better and sound proof this wouldn't have been an issue I had security come up, called 2 times and still inside we dealt with speakers with music, drunks banging and running all over and smoking weed smell was overwhelming. It was so bad that by 3:30am I decided to leave and sleep at airport. I paid over $300 for one night and had the worst experience! I was offered $50 credit ??? I need a supervisor to respond to talk to someone- I would like a refund or 200 or more credit for what was No more then a horrible experience with no sleep, smelling weed all night , listening to screaming partying people all over the hotel internallyTill we decided to leave

Yelp
I'll say this....for locals, this hotel isn't a problem. But to someone coming from out of town that is not familiar with the area, they would probably run for the hills and leave the worst review possible. Let's start here...if you are looking for a hotel that you can relax in, keep looking. The Atheneum is a Detroit gem located dead smack in the middle of Greektown which is THE place to be on Friday/Saturday nights. It is loud and you WILL hear everything outside..talking, screaming, fights, loud music and traffic until about 2-3am when all the bars close and the crowds disappear. Also, because these are suites, A LOT of parties and gatherings are held here. Expect to hear music and people in the hallways...more at night than the day. If you are familiar and okay with this, then The Atheneum is pretty decent. Check in can be a little long depending on who is at the counter but all the staff is friendly. The building is OLD (like early 1900s old) so the rooms are a little dated and could use a good DEEP cleaning but they're still nice and spacious. The bed could be softer. The soak tub is nice. The shower is AWESOME. The room has a small fridge with water to purchase ($4 for Fiji water). There is a bar in the lobby but it was closed for remodeling. There is no parking lot so you either have to pay the $28/day valet (you can come and go as you please) or pay to park in the structure across the street (you pay every time you leave).

Yelp
I made my reservation online and noticed I booked for the wrong day so I called up and they changed it for me. Valet workers are very nice as well as the door man. At the front desk was Christina who was such a delight! There was an issue with the reservation so the manager had to push it through and Christina kept apologizing, but none of this was their fault and all issues were solved. Now their rooms were HUGE, my boyfriend was in awe at how big they were. It was very clean and the bed was probably one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. The tub was giant as well, I was surprised at how big it was. We had ordered breakfast in the room, bacon and French toast was great but there was some left over food stuck on the plate with the French toast and the hash browns were a little cold. Other than that all was a great experience, we were very close to a lot of places we wanted to check out and will be coming back in the future.

Yelp
It appears nice from the lobby, but our room was less than perfect. It wasn't clean. There were what looked like red wine stains all over the floor. The furniture was old and dated. The water pressure was terrible. The water wasn't very hot. The elevator buttons were crusty and dirty. Definitely not worth the $155+ per night for the stay. That being said, the staff was very nice and attentive and the valet was amazing.

Yelp
For a last minute trip, I had an excellent time. I wanted to have a small getaway with my partner. I stayed in the King Suite on the 5th floor. my room had an amazing view of the city. It was very romantic and clean. The bathtub could fit both me and my partner for a nice soak. I also enjoyed the variety of channels available in our room as we had two TV's. The reasoning behind the 4 star review instead of 5 is due to some things in the room that needed updates. The towel rack instantly broke and fell apart when we went to remove a towel. Also, I was super pleased to see they offered room service. At promptly 6:30am I ordered Cinnamon french toast, breakfast potatoes, and a coffee. The price of this was charged to my card on file and delivered right to my door. While the person that answered the phone was incredibly courteous and knowledgeable about the menu, the food that arrived left more to be desired. My potatoes we not cooked all the way through, and the bottom slice of french toast was completely charred, yet uncooked in the middle. My suggestion is that if you're considering getting room service, you should probably just pass and get doordash instead. I would absolutely stay here again, just probably won't order their food.

Yelp
Really interesting room and lobby layout. Staff were accommodating, room was clean and comfortable, and you're right downtown. I was particularly impressed with the size of the tub in my room, it inspired me to take the first bath I've taken in years!

Yelp
Excellent two night stay in early December. The room was spacious, clean, well appointed and as advertised. The bed was comfortable as well. The gym had the essentials and suited my needs. Lastly, the front desk associate ensured a seamless and professional check-in. She was courteous as well despite the guest ahead of me being rude to her. (wish remembered her name. Think started with an L.) Would definitely stay again and recommend.

Yelp
The service was ok and the rooms were big. But the Al carpet in our rooms was stained in multiple locations. The beds I may as well slept on the floor, the pillows felt like there rags inside, the blankets were so scratchy. Would be a good hotel if you brought an air mattress and your own bedding

Yelp
Booked a room here because they had decent ratings. I really enjoyed my stay. Our two queen bed/ suite was large and clean and nice. This hotel is a little older but they keep it pristine. They have a free shuttle that took us to our restaurant and even waited outside after a concert to pick us up. ) hint hint) saved me money didn't have to hail an Uber. They also have a free breakfast , but beware! It's not your true breakfast menu. No eggs, meat or pancakes, or fruit. Just dry cereal, packaged pastries and bagels, juice and coffee. I'm not going to let it drip my four star rating because outside of that the staff we extremely helpful and polite and cleanliness is golden for a rating( in my book).

Yelp
*** Atheneum Suite Hotel ... An Affair to Remember. *** When Atheneum originally opened about 20 years ago, I had to stay overnite since I heard so many great things about it ... palatial, exposed brick walls, cement pillars, soaking tubs, etc. It was quite lovely. I would have given Atheneum 5-stars then. Now last month I returned to stay here for just a few of nights. It was like rekindling an old love - it may not be as glamorous as it was in the beginning but it remains just as lovely as ever. A solid 4-stars since it is conveniently located near freeways, Greektown casino, bars, restaurants and it's affordably priced. My king suite felt like an apt. It was spacious and comfortable. I'll return, and hopefully this love will withstand the test of time. *** The Atheneum Suite Hotel ... An Affair to Remember. ***

Yelp
2.5- this hotel hasn't been updated since the early 1990's. It is almost like a time capsule. There are pros and cons to this: Cons: there are no outlets by the bed/nightstand. This is bothersome since most people use there phone as an alarm. There outlets that are available are loose. The carpets have stains on them. You are not allowed to get/touch/move a luggage cart. You must wait for a bellhop to bring it to you and unload it. I had to wait for 60 minutes for one. I also had to wait 60 minutes for the shuttle they advertise. The driver complained the whole time about having to drive. The latest you can check out is 12pm. The rooms are dark, not much lighting at all and the lamps they do have come with a dark lamp shade. Pros: the mattresses and pillows were really comfortable, the valet people and doorman were very nice, the rooms themselves are huge, with a large bathroom. If it is sunny the hotel is within a mile of most things in downtown Detroit.

Yelp
Just... don't stay here. Hotel is desperate need of deep cleaning and remodel, rooms are heavy on Glade or some kind of freshener to compensate. Carpets need to be burned. Getting in and out of shower was a treacherous experience since the tubs are deep soaking tubs. Mildew everywhere. Paper thin walls, could hear neighbors roll in past midnight. Morning breakfast had good service but horrible options of just prepackaged muffins and cereals. Check out other reviews where guests have had belongings stolen while they slept

Yelp
I stayed Friday night - Sunday morning, paid for valet (56$) and my car was returned to me with a huge scratch down my drivers side back door. The staff was helpful and kind until this point... when I got my care back I showed them and they said "what do you want me to do?" .... UMMM GET SOMEONE WHO WILL FIX IT OR PAY ME TO GET IT FIXED. They told me I didn't need a police report and security doesn't write anything up, gave me a piece of paper and said the manager would reach out to me. I NEVER received a call. I called and the manager he said he would get on top of it and not worry. It's been TWO WEEKS and no one has called me back and when I call the manager is "out". I'm going through every avenue to file complaints against them until they take ownership.

Yelp
I travel for business weekly. My company always books the room and sends authorization for the room and incidentals. I am here now at 516. They have the authorization form that literally says call with questions about incidentals. Well when I checked in it was 15 minutes approximately of ridiculous banter that the card is only for room and not incidentals and then the manager on duty left and spoke to her boss and said it was okay and sorted out. Now the deposit they needed is for... drum roll... incidentals. But the manager on duty just declined my dinner and said room service wasn't included.... Is it not an incidental? Seriously, this hotel is the worst I have stayed at this year. Of course the general manager won't be here till Tuesday so in the meantime I guess I don't get to eat! I will never stay here again and don't recommend to anyone!

Yelp
I wish I had read other reviews before staying here. The hotel is old and very much outdated, there's an instant muggy smell right when you arrive. Upon check-in we were told there was a shuttle that will take us within 5 miles we just need to let them know 15 minutes out... well we were planning on leaving within 15 so we asked if he could call it now so when we get back down it won't be as long of a wait since we were headed to a reservation and he refused. Needless to say we ended up getting an Uber, so we wouldn't be late. This was the first absurdity. Valet was on a texting system that never worked so that was inconvenient as well. The bathroom had mildew in it and one of my male friends was frustrated that the toilet lid didn't stay up... obviously not something I noticed as a female but could imagine that turning into a painful situation. Beds were super uncomfortable. The only good thing about this place is the location. I personally didn't mind the strip club next door but keep that in mind if you are traveling with children.

Yelp
What in the world happened to The Atheneum?? This placed used to be 5 stars easily, yet, after our stay in a suite Sat I struggle to even give it 1 star. The room desperately needs updating. The paint is old and scratched, the wood furniture is worn, the sitting area is old. They had the nerve to tack on an additional $15 "development" charge to my stay. It took valet 40 mins to retrieve our car in the logistical nightmare that's for dropping off/picking up. $345 for a night and this is what we get? Shameful!
