Google
Laid back Greek diner with friendly staff and huge portions for an excellent price. We enjoyed lamb gyros, Greek salad and spinach pie. It came with rice, pita and fries. The pie was a lil mushy/chewy probably day old but great flavor. Meal came out hot and fast, and it hit the spot!

Google
Had a small Greek Salad and Gyro today. Very good. Sat at the counter. Great people, friendly staff, and I'll be stopping by again when I'm in the area.

John Nagridge

Google
One of the best gyros I've ever had. Moist, flavorful meat with homemade yogurt sauce on the most incredible bread cooked to order. Great attentive service from Tammy too.

Dawn Clemoens

Google
This was my 1st not-so-good experience here. I ordered my usual Greek Salad with chicken on the side. The chicken was extremely dry, and the lettuce didn't appear to be fresh. I was extremely disappointed.

Allison

Google
I've been going to the downtown location for a decade now, and we even had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. Decided to try the Southfield location now that I'm on this side of town and it just.....wasn't the same. The salads have much more in them, chicken included, at the detroit location, and the detroit location includes pita with their salads. My chicken was pretty charred at this one, and I found a thick, curly, black hair in my container of feta

Sherry Bowles

Google
Incorrect salad with my take out order and my qyro platter consisted of a giant pile of sauce, some meat covered in sauce and a few soft and mushy tomatoes with a few onions. This is gross packaging and simple incompetent.

Google
I dislike the term “hidden gem,” because no business wants to be hidden, but it describes Athens Souvlaki really well. Their food is consistently incredible. Homemade pita is legendary. Spinach pie is wonderful. I’ve visited countless times and have always been happy with my order. Everyone who works here is very friendly too. This isn’t a Coney Island, so you may wait a few extra minutes for your food, but it’s totally worth it.

Google
Great food with friendly service. I highly recommend their chicken gyro. They make their pita bread in house and it's absolutely delicious. You can also get an old school Coney or loose Burger. A+. Just love this place.

Yelp
I love that they're here! Downtown needs a walk-in, sit down, affordable place, and Athens fits the bill. You can have lunch in an hour, the food is homemade and delicious, and service is good. A perfect diner style experience. The homemade bread is a MUST - you can see them making it as you dine, and it comes with all of their yummy salads - the chicken Greek is my favorite. The dressing is also homemade and just so yummy. Something about it is just so much better than other places. It's creamy and tangy. I also really like their lemon rice soup. You really can't go wrong - pita sandwiches, saganaki, salads, all good, and you'll spend between $8 and $20. A lunch staple downtown for sure.

Yelp
Located inside a strip mall in Southfield, it's a pretty unassuming place. We went for dinner on a Friday night and the restaurant was empty, however, there was quite a bit of takeout orders coming and going. The people who work there were really nice. We ordered some Greek salads which were great!! My wife had the lemon rice soup which she also liked. I had a gyro which was wrapped in a really unique, and tasty, pita. The meat, however, was sliced thick and kind of mushy. I prefer it thinner and crispy. It came with some fries, they were fine. My wife had the moussaka which came with some really overcooked beans and some cold peas. Meh. If it wasn't for the super nice people there I'd give it two stars as it was also kinda pricey.

Yelp
Fabulous food. I especially enjoy the pita bread. I've never had pita bread like that anywhere else. Homemade

Charles D.

Yelp
Best homemade pita. Best Greek dressing. So much better than it has any business being in this odd location. Worth the trip!

Lashawara B.

Yelp
Their Greek salad is awesome! It's the only thing I get with double pita and a bottle of dressing. The pita is homemade so I get two! #nothinglikeit

Carol W.

Yelp
Food is always good! Pricey but delicious. Best coneys in the state. Especially better than those other places downtown.

Yelp
It's inside the shopping center. It's a small narrow, but deep location. It's been here since 1966 and I just found out about it. It's a little diner, looks about 24 years old as far as the interior. The woman waiting on me has been here for many years. Was pleasant to me. They make all of their chicken breast and kebab dishes from scratch so it takes a bit of time. The small side of Greek is made with iceberg lettuce, doesn't look like the menu picture. The rice on the chicken breast is hard in parts, not sure if it wasn't cooked all the way or if it's hard from being burned. The chicken breast has a dry red powder all over it, applied after it was cooked. Everyone that works here seems super friendly. Most of the people coming through seem to be regulars and know the staff when they come to pick up their food. The waitress is super sweet and wanted to make me happy with my meal and offered to try some lamb or beef gyro. I don't eat either beef or lamb sadly but it was a sweet offer anyways. The chicken was alright, the peas and green beans are overcooked but then again they seem to be stewed. The beans and peas tasted good. The rice isn't good to me at all, much too crunchy from being undercooked.

Yelp
Our monthly lunch group varies from four to twelve people and we try to mix the type of places we meet at with respect to ethnicity, cost, ability to accommodate a group, and the location. Looking at recent places we've visited, I noticed that we haven't been to a Greek restaurant, so Athens Souvlaki fit the criteria. We arrived at 11:30am on Saturday and it wasn't busy yet so we were seated immediately and waited for the rest of our group...only five today! I had been studying the photos and menus on Yelp and had predetermined that it's been a while since I've had a Gyro so my wife and I both ordered the same thing and also split a bowl of Lemon Rice (Avgolemono) Soup. Service was excellent and our food came out very quickly. The soup was delicious and you can add chicken for an extra charge. The Gyro was also very tasty and was served with what seemed to be straight sour cream instead of the usual Tzatziki sauce. Overall we had a great meal and leisurely time with friends.

Colleen L.

Yelp
The Chicken Greek Salad at Athens Souvlaki is absolutely the best. Never thought I'd ever crave a salad, but this one changed my mind. It's always fresh and tasty. No old, wilted lettuce here. The chicken is freshly grilled, the dressing is delicious, and the pita that is served with the salad is hot off the grill. Good food and friendly, fast, and efficient service make Athens Souvlaki a great place to eat.

Yelp
Not to be confused with the capital of Greece, or with Atkins (a diet that doesn't work), A Prinze (Freddie Jr perhaps), with Athletes (I've been told I'm an athlete in bed), with Mathgeeks (ew), or with Atheists (sensible people). I came to this place to try some of their advertised 5-star awesome Greek food. I found the Gyro to be authentic and tasty, completely stuffed with a hearty plentiful portion with plenty of yogurt sauce. However the meat wasn't as juicy and delicious as I hoped for or expect in a city that is known for Gyros. And while the prices are really good, the taste of the Gyro was overall just okay. The pita may have been the best aspect of it. In any case, 4 stars for a very friendly place, locally owned, with good service and good prices and pretty good Gyros.

Chad C.

Yelp
I first tried this place for the first time when I worked for Verizon Wireless call center about 18 years ago. One of the things I love about this place is its consistency. The food is always good and always excellent customer service. Today was no different than the first time I came in. Today I had the broiled chicken sandwich with lemon rice soup.

Tamre D.

Yelp
The most delicious, fresh and tasty Greek salad!! The service is always amazing! The family atmosphere is great.

Allison B.

Yelp
Athens Souvlaki has THE BEST homemade pita bread - don't miss out! Their Greek salad and gyros are also excellent. I like to get takeout from here when I'm working in Southfield, as we return to the office! I have to echo some other reviews here about the location (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5). It's in a weird strip mall, and it truly is a dive. The inside is honestly a little run down and can even be off-putting. If it was spruced up a bit, this could easily be a 5 star place! With that being said, don't let the location scare you away. It's worth a try.

Tresa C.

Yelp
When you read large chicken Caesar salad, BELIEVE IT! WOW! Wonderful. I personally had two extra servings.

Tehmina W.

Yelp
Please read my whole review for the reason for the 4star rating . Athens is a tiny "whole in the wall " reasturant hidden in the corner of a strip mall . One of my providers brought me a Greek salad from them one day and I've been hooked since. I was shocked when I saw the tiny place myself. I order carry out frequently from here as they by far have the BEST chicken Greek salad and chicken gyro you will ever have. My reason for the 4 star is not due to the food or customer service both are wonderful. It's the establishment, it is filthy. Yes I said it. You have to look past the dirty booths and windows caked with dust and so on. They have a lot of staff it appears . I'd have them cleaning during down time. This place is a real gem just needs a lil shine.

Deb M.

Yelp
I really love this place and wish I got there more often. We drive from Canton just for their pita, yes it's that good. Don't ask me about the menu because I always get the same thing, the chicken gyro. They have perfected the delicious char broiled chicken and I just love it. The tzatziki sauce is the very best I've ever had. It's really basic and old school and is stuck in the corner of a random strip mall. The wait staff have worked there forever and it has a cult following of regulars who sit there for hours talking about anything and everything. I never leave without taking home a bottle of their delicious dressing and a chicken pasta salad. It's so simple yet so delicious. If you want really good Greek food seek out this little hole in the wall. You will be happy you did.

L Renee H.

Yelp
Best chicken Greek salad ever I've been going here for the past 16 years. Chicken is always tender.

Rick B.

Yelp
What an incredibly nice surprise. I stopped a random person on the street and asked where a good place to eat in downtown Detroit was. He gave me directions to Athens and said he just had a Greek salad that was phenomenal. I'm not much of a salad guy so when I got here, I ordered a Gyro sandwich and french fries. It was phenomenal and probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in Detroit. I cannot recommend this place enough and the staff was superb. David did a phenomenal job at making me feel welcome and I really appreciate his hospitality. I will definitely come back here anytime I'm in Detroit.

Al P.

Yelp
The true hit at this place be the in house made Bread for them Gyros, wowed ate them all with the Greek combo dinner a mega plate of all the Greek favorites including Gyro sliced directly off the spit. The Gyro while good just not our favorite that goes to Golden Fleece and Souvlaki Greek Street Food. Delicious Lemon Rice Soup, great service provider was Armenian lady. Found out they have a location downtown Detroit. The traditional Greek Salad totally missed the mark, we've had this many Greek restaurant's A traditional Greek salad recipe (Horiatiki) will always (and only) include tomato, sliced cucumber, green pepper, sliced red onion, Kalamata olives and of course feta cheese. It must be seasoned with dried oregano and salt and dressed with good quality extra virgin olive oil and a splash of red wine vinegar. The main reason for not a 5 star rating.

Patches O.

Yelp
Classic little Greece spoon, i mean grease. It's not gonna wow you over with it's decor, but the food is good food. It's outdated, feels like you walked into Mel's diner but i liked it. The Yelper's didn't let me down with their reviews on this place. Service was good and food was good.

Erica N.

Yelp
They forgot a part of the Oder so I had to wait, the fries then got cold. And I'm not used to tzatziki just being plain yogurt without cucumber or anything. Hmmm

Alonzo C.

Yelp
I had the lentil soup (lemony) and moussaka. And didn't take pictures. Food was good and old fashioned and extremely plentiful. Take my word for it. Other people took the pictures.

Jeremiah Z.

Yelp
Stopped in here because of your help. The food was overall pretty good. My children had hotdogs that were OK but not great. They looked like they just came out of the pot. I had a gyro which was very tasty. The bread was tasty and warm and had a crisp texture to it. My wife had a Greek salad and she really enjoyed it. Sometimes the food is it pretty decent place. Here's what I didn't like. The wait staff at our visit were very unfriendly; it felt like I was in New Jersey. The bathroom looked like it was a high school bathroom and there were more staff in the restaurant in there were patrons. Overall dining experience was not pleasant and warm but the food was decent. I don't think I would come back.

Melissa B.

Yelp
My second visit was better than my first. I needed a quiet place to eat and work. Their secluded location worked perfect. I ordered the dinner Spinach pie. The waitress was worried that I wouldn't like it because it was vegetarian (apparently, no meat is a problem for some, ha!). Anyway, I knew when I ordered it was - it was a generous portion of fantastic spinach pie (not super crunchy but delicious nontheless). It was partnered with 2 fresh pitas, a large side of green beans (a bit overcooked for my preference, but still delicious) with a tomato base. There was also a side of peas and yellow rice. It also came with a soup or salad which I declined. Thankfully I did, because it was too much for a single person, I can't imagine putting another side in my belly too. with tax totalled $10. I am happy and will be coming back.

Ms.l.m. T.

Yelp
I refuse to go to Detroit anymore for Greek food. This restaurant rocks despite the location and I highly recommend the Lamb Shank dinner. The Greek salads are phenomenal and Lemon Rice Soup off the charts deeellliicciioouusssss! Staff is down to earth and very efficient. I dare you to try it. You'll be back.

Tamica J.

Yelp
This place is always empty when I i pass by it. I stopped in one day, because how can you go wrong with Coney Island? It's ok. I've has better. I think because they don't have much traffic, the food sits too long. I won't eat there again because my food was not what I expected. Waitress was friendly, and it looked clean.

Yelp
Southfield. 11& Lahser. Right off of 696- head North one block. When you see Greyhound Bus Station on your left- turn right on 11 Mile. Then turn left, into plaza. Drive straight to where the L-shape intersects. You have arrived! Located in "Harvard Mall" - don't let the word "Mall" have your mind conjure-up, endless walking to get to this great restaurant. It's a small plaza. Restaurant located in the Northeast corner. Walk thru the doors. Just a few steps, down- on the left. This authentic Greek restaurant has been in this spot for years, and years, and their's a reason why! It's family owned! It's "old-school"! It still employs many of the "original" employee's! If it's a Greek staple- it's on the menu! If you are looking for the best "Gyro" in Southfield...in Southeast Michigan- you've found it! "Where's the meat"? Here! Reasonably priced. You get a "big bang", for your buck! Always fresh! Polite staff, and of course, The best reason of all- to stop-in... THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS! Check it out! Your taste buds, and your tummy will thank you! Megan, and "Tree-man" Bryan

Stacey B.

Yelp
My favorite Greek restaurant around! 1- They make their own bread right in front of you. 2- Their gyro meat is absolute amazing. It literally melts in your mouth. This location isn't close to me but it's worth going out of my way. 3- Their chicken for the salads or gyros is just as good. Small, bite-sized pieces and it's not dry or end pieces like you get in some other places. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. You can thank me later.

Julie B.

Yelp
Soooo much food an really good. Just a hole in the wall in a strip mall definitely a diamond in the rough

S H.

Yelp
Was looking for something different and decided Greek was it. I'll definitely be back, everything was fresh and homemade, Even the pita bread for the gyro was freshly baked. Probably the best chicken gyro I've ever had.

Dana D.

Yelp
Unfortunately I found a bug in my Greek salad carry out today. I am super disappointed and hoping this was a one off. Will update if I try them again

Chris S.

Yelp
One of Southfield's lesser known but excellent Greek spots. They make a great gyro but where they really shine is their delicious bread. First grilled and then fried, it's worth coming for just to try with their tzatziki or cucumber sauce. Overall 4/5 Priced like your typical coney, but the ingredients and cooking is above average quality. Get the bread or forever regret.

Crystal P.

Yelp
The food was really good! My husband and I decided to give it a try since we tried the other restaurant in the building and it was good. Our waiter was very friendly our food was delivered without delay the pita bread is made fresh and had good flavor. The restaurant could use some updating just as the one Next door however I would return!

Annette J.

Yelp
Athens Souvlaki is a small, low key diner tucked inside a relatively sleepy/rundown strip mall. It's nothing fancy, and it's hard to find if you're looking for signage, but the food is delicious! I didn't go too wild. I stuck with a simple Greek salad and the chicken gyro. My lunch partner ordered the same thing and we both cleaned our plates. The salad dressing in particular was fantastic. The gyro was awesome. The pita is fluffy, lightly fried, and has just the right amount of chew. They make it in house and you can tell. Very fresh. The chicken wasn't dry and had great flavor. The tzatziki sauce they put on it is also fantastic. I could eat that 'ish by the bucket full for sure. We ate in but judging by the long take out line as we were on our way out I'd guess it's a pretty solid option for take out too.

Lilly K.

Yelp
If I could give this restaurant 10 stars I would! The staff is so nice and the product is amazing. I have no idea what they put in their pita or how it turns out the way it does, but oh my god. As a carb expert I have literally dreamed about this pita. And their gyros are delicious. love everything about this place.

Jack P.

Yelp
Best gyro I've had in a while. The pita bread is delicious and the gyro meat is flavorful. My daughter had the deluxe chicken pita and it looked and tasted delicious...I'm not a Swiss cheese fan, so I tasted the side with American cheese. You won't go wrong with either one.

Julian B.

Yelp
This spot is a prime example of, "if you cook it well, they will come." As others have mentioned due to its indoor strip mall locale, many never know this spot. Lesser restaurants would have failed. They have their Gyros and salad niche and do it well. Ive always been impressed with their seemingly loyal lunch crowd as it's always busy during those times. I live nearby so its a neighborhood spot for me. While I dont eat here as often, I highly recommend it for Gyros, salad and other Greek diner dishes. The greek salad dressing is pretty tasty compared with others. Staff always solid in my experiences. The two things you often hear is the unique homemade pita bread and the yummy grilled chicken. The homemade yogurt served with the gyros is a different touch too. No tzatziki. I like to add a sprinkle of chopped parsley to my carryout gyros.

Sonny D.

Yelp
They say you can never go home again because it won't be the same. Well, we went home to eat at Athens Souvlaki after a 2 year absence and it was exactly the same. The same welcoming faces, the same great pita, the same fabulous Greek Salad with the works including their yummy chicken and their very best homemade Greek salad dressing. We found out on the new menu that we could buy a bottle to take home. My husband also had the lamb gyro and that was great too. Try it, you'll like it. But don't wait 2 years, because you'll be missing some good eating.

Bill B.

Yelp
Awesome Greek food very authentic reasonable prices I would definitely recommend anybody to this location. They have a pretty big menu with a lot of different items to choose from I usually just get the regular gyro pita or the chicken gyro pita It's really unbelievable how good this place is I would recommend this to any of my family or friends really awesome great people nice staff

Jillian L.

Yelp
Great gyro meat, good proportions, fabulous value. I was really in love with how much variety was in the Greek salad. Would have been 5/5 stars, however, they do not pit their kalamative olives and there was no warning on the menu. I'm fairly certain I cracked a tooth (hurts like it). The waitress said "we've always had pits, it's never changed, you can't pit those olives." Well I'm not from the area and I can find pit a pound of olives in ten minutes. Poor excuse for a bad customer experience. However, I would totally come back here for the food. It's phenomenal. Just warn about the olives!!!

Hannah S.

Yelp
Best Greek food in Southfield. The little strip mall arcade that Athens sits in is not the kind of place I would normally stop in at, especially for a busy weekday lunch. But someone in our office had been going here for years before he starting sharing the secret with the rest of us. Very friendly family runs it and most of the cooking is done in the very front. The griddle is where they cook the best fresh pita-style bread I've ever had and next to that is the gyro spit. My coworkers love the Greek salads with great feta cheese and the gyros are awesome mostly because of that amazing bread. Highly recommend Athens. Greek food is their specialty but they also do typically coney island food. I can't vouch for the coneys but all the Greek food is excellent.

Nick P.

Yelp
An absolute hidden gem. If you didn't know about it, it would be easy to miss hidden in a shopping center, but once you visit for the first time, I'll bet you'll be back. The staff is friendly and if you start showing up regularly they tend to remember you. Service is fast, making it an ideal lunch spot. Prices are on point. However, the best part is the food. The pita that the gyro comes on is simply the best I've ever had. I don't know how they make them so perfect, but it's just the ultimate consistency, texture, flavor, everything. It's almost impossible to go anywhere else for a gyro now because I just find myself dreaming about Athens. I've taken a bunch of co-workers here and they all agree as well. I make it a habit to stop by at least a couple of times for lunch every month.

David W.

Yelp
Delicious greek food in an ambiguous mall. Thank god for Yelp or I wouldn't have been able to find it. Got to try a little of everything when I came. They ran out of Lamb Chops when I was there and substitued Lamb Shank... Not a worthwhile trade They offered me water was I was waiting, but omg...it was the most RANCID water I ever tasted. I hope no one gets sick from drikinig it. Ordered: Moussaka 5.50 Christo Combo Lamb Shank Grape Leaves Moussaka Spinach Pie Rice Salad Pita Bread rice pudding 2.40 baklava 1.70

Magnus L.

Yelp
I've only had their takeout so far. It's a really nice but small hole-in-the-wall greek restaurant. You feel well taken care of as soon as you get in. I tried their greek salad with chicken. The grilled chicken was amazing!! The salad and the dressing went perfectly well with the dish. The pita bread really is top notch and among the best pita bread I've had. I'd liked more beans in the salad and what's up with having one slice of red beet in the salad? I don't think of red beets when I think of greek food :-) I can't wait until I can go here next time and try something different from their menu.

William C.

Yelp
best pita and gyro I ever had. hands down. I don't normally get a gyro, but after reading the reviews I figured I would give it a go I ate here only because of yelp. I love you yelp, leading me through the doorways of amazing establishments like this, that I would have never tried. it was a bit hard to find even with my iPhone GPS map. Hint: It's inside the mall. the place has character the gyro meat was tender, juicy, light and bursting with flavor. amazing sauce. creamy, very subtle. perfect great tomatos and onions. fresh. the pita made fresh. I could see them being grilled. nice crunch, but inside all warm and soft. best pita I ever had perfect fries on the side can't wait to go back and get the braised lamb and pasticcio. I'm not dissing places like Leo's and national but I am grateful to yelp for spreading the word about places like this. I think it's so important to make the effort to go and support businesses like this where somebody has obviously put their heart and soul into the food, and it shows. life is too short to eat crappy chain restaurant food, and places like this are important and need to be preserved and supported

Sri C.

Yelp
This place is simply awesome for the Greek salads there pita bread with the dressing is almost like crack. :-) This place is quick and courteous and is run by a family that appreciates everyone that walks in through the doors. The food is good and merciful service is excellent. This place is very close to my work and I frequent this place either for dining or a takeout on a frequent basis

Lauren T.

Yelp
Came here for lunch after reading some good yelp reviews, it's about 2 miles from my office. Immediately not impressed with our waitress. Water and iced tea tasted weird. Both my friend and I got the lemon rice soup and gyros. Soup was good and what I was expecting. Gyro bread was good and made on site. The meat tastes dried out, had to ask for more tzatsiki sauce to try to help it. The atmosphere of the diner was average Coney type (as others have mentioned). Maybe will try to Greek salad to go in the future but will not be back for dine in.

Larry A.

Yelp
Ordered a Gyro with Fries, Spinach Pie, and Lemon Rice soup. Sandwich was great. One issue was with the tomatoes, they where too old. Spinach pie was good. The soup was middle of the road in the flavor department. I think my 4 star reflects that.

Bill P.

Yelp
It hurts to write this review about a small mom and pop shop and fellow Greek, but I was really disappointed that they are representing Greek food in this horrible manner. I am also trying to be fair and not judge this from a totally authentic Greek aspect. I know it's an American/Greek place, but the place is representing itself as the real deal. I got the combo that included moussaka, pasitsio, gyro, rice and pita. I chose lemon rice soup as the app. Soup: good taste. It offers the option to add chicken for an extra charge. Huh? Lemon rice soup is CHICKEN lemon rice soup. Gyro: it was fine. The tzatziki provided was WEIRD. No cucumber, no other spices. Just a bowl of yogurt. Really. Pastitsio, moussaka: just sad. No authentic flavor of cinnamon, barely any meat, and very, very wet. Rice: hard. Chewy. Enough said. Pita: thick chewy doughy. Not light and fluffy, but durable enough to hold a good gyro together. Had to ask for my veggies. Eh, they were ok. No dill, just veggies. I told The server the veggies weren't there, and she wanted to give the owner a hard time because he is the one that put my meal together. I played along, it was fun, but the owner put this slip on my plate? So he is aware of this mess??? The server was great. Nice attentive and what you want from an old school kind of place. The intent here is not to down them in as much as the owner will see the review and make things better.
