"If you want to commune with the ancient Athenians, this is the place—the only five-star hotel on the resplendent promenade that circles the Acropolis. The vibe is surprisingly calm and contemporary. Classical references are juxtaposed with modern design classics: black-and-white marble torsos hang above leather Le Corbusier armchairs. Accomplished Greek food—a salad of wilted greens with nut crumble and tangerine, scorpion fish ‘meatball’ soup garnished with bottarga, white chocolate tsoureki (brioche) with kumquat and Greek coffee foam—is served in the smart rooftop restaurant with a side of Parthenon views. Service can be patchy and the carpeted, wood-paneled rooms are a little somber for high summer, but you can’t beat the location. "AthensWas is an homage to the city’s swinging Sixties. Those were golden and glamorous days in the Greek capital: classic modernism was all the rage. So it is at AthensWas. There’s sumptuous Greek marble and native wood, but instead of dramatic columns and colorful mosaics, the interiors are all clean lines and elegant simplicity with a vintage twist." - Mark Fedeli

"An homage to the city's swinging Sixties, this glam throwback channels classic modernism with sumptuous Greek marble and native wood; instead of dramatic columns and colorful mosaics, the interiors favor clean lines and elegant simplicity with a vintage twist." - Mark Fedeli

"A standout from our 'Plus' collection within the Athens selection, featured among the city's most spectacular hotels." - The MICHELIN Guide

"With a name that riffs on “Athens was” — great, grand, the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy — this sleek new hotel sits a stone’s throw from the Acropolis and uses its wordplay to make you think about the relationship between the ancient city’s past and present, and wonder where exactly on that continuum it places itself." - The MICHELIN Guide
