The Best Restaurants Near Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire | Eater

"Come fall, this south Amherst farm store is bustling with locals, college students, and out-of-towners from open until close. While you can rely on Atkins for your weekly grocery shop, it’s the baked goods — like freshly made cider doughnuts and apple pies — that have regulars coming back time and time again. The store is just a quick walk from Hampshire’s campus, and it’s particularly popular on Mountain Day, when the colleges ring their bells, sending students out of classes to enjoy the outdoors." - Nat Belkov

The Best Cider Doughnuts in the Boston Area | Eater Boston

"Alright, so Atkins Farms isn’t exactly close to Boston, but no Western Massachusetts trip is complete without a cider doughnut from the Atkins market. Headed to Mass MoCA to see the latest installation? Be sure to drive through Amherst for a cider doughnut before banging a right and heading north. (Alternatively, Atkins ships its cider doughnuts outside of the hot months of July and August.)" - Terrence Doyle

Google
Hit or miss on their deli products. A great bakery for sure. Great place for birthday cakes. But we've been coming here for years always a great stop on our way back home on route 116.

Google
We stumbled upon Atkins Farm in Amherst on our way to Mount Holyoke, and I’m so glad we did! It’s such a cute little store with lots of local charm. The highlight for us was their ice cream shop with so many delicious flavors to choose from, and everything tasted fresh and homemade. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area!

Google
Great selection of pumpkins this fall. Really interesting varieties, local, too! We were there on a lovely fall day. Temp was 70deg, and the ice cream was delicious. Had the chocolate cookie dough -wonderfully flavorful vanilla base!

Google
Such a treasure trove of treats, all at surprisingly low prices. Tons of local goodies like produce and maple syrup and a huge selection of baked goods. My favorite part? The huge selection of craft beers and ciders, and the “seasonal samplers” they offer- 4 packs of random individual beers/ciders packaged together so you can try them all.

Google
Nice local market with lots to offer to the surrounding community. Also a nice travel location with a decent bakery and ice cream shop. I found the produce and bakery goods to be of very good quality although prices were somewhat high. The inside of the market was very organized and clean and the parking lot is very large yet finding a spot can be challenging because they do a great business. The employees were friendly and professional , I dealt with a few as I wandered the market looking at everything they had to offer. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area as the town of Amherst is becoming a destination place for families and groups.

Google
A wonderful specialty market with ‘field to farm’ fresh products, and a bakery that makes fabulous donuts, muffins, and so much more!! Fresh made sandwiches, meals in the deli, and an outstanding meat market. It’s a must visit place!!

Google
I actually grew up with Atkins. Been going there with my parents since I was a kid and now I take my daughter there as well. The produce is always gorgeous and of course fresh. Their bakery is full of amazing treats for all the different tastebuds in my household. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. I moved out of Amherst for over 10 years now, but I definitely come back often.

Google
This is a really unique Market. Not your ordinary supermarket. A supermarket boutique, specialty items in all departments. The most unusual part is that it is a great spot to grab a bite to eat with friends. A huge list of deli sandwiches, and don't miss the yummy pastry. 😋 Beautiful sunroom to enjoy your tasty treat. Check it out. You won't be let down.

Yelp
Atkins Farms is a well-loved farmers' market conveniently located near Hampshire College, offering an extensive selection of goods including produce, desserts, deli items, ice cream, and more. The prices are reasonable, especially for the quality and freshness of the products. Their produce selection is robust, and the variety ensures there's something for everyone. One highlight is their ice cream shop, known for its unique flavors and generous portion sizes. The desserts and deli options also look enticing, with offerings that feel both high-quality and satisfying. In summary, Atkins Farms is a must-visit if you're in the area. Whether you're stocking up on fresh produce or indulging in a sweet treat, it's a delightful spot to explore.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Atkins since I was an undergrad at UMass Amherst in the 90s, and I was excited to be back in the happy Valley recently for a swing by. It was exactly as I remembered- tons of fresh veggies, juices, baked goods, locally sourced products and ice cream. I remember this place being my farmers market before farmers markets became a thing. Plenty of parking, lots of seating in their Cafe. The staff is super friendly and helpful and provide excellent service. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
It was fun to revisit this place that holds a lot of childhood memories for me. I used to get a delicious mocha cake from the bakery here for my birthday sometimes, and they used to sell a lot of little knicknacks. That part has largely been replaced by craft beer and wine, but I'm not really complaining. Unfortunately we were going on a longish drive and couldn't get perishable things but the loaf of chocolate sour cream cake and cider donuts were delicious, and the honey beer we got from a local brewery was nice as well. This place is cheery and full of craft condiments, nice bakery items and prepared foods, and fun gifts. Things are pricey but that's to be expected.

Yelp
The flower shop no longer has professional designers since Aug. 2024! These website arrangements were designed by previous designers that left due to hostile work conditions. They should be taken down since no one has the ability to replicate them!!! It's sad the owner doesn't care and the arrangements now look like crap! Save your money and go to a local florist that takes pride in their quality products. I am speaking on behalf of these ex~employees that were left no choice but to quit!!

Laura S.

Yelp
A must stop in Amherst area. We come every time we visit our college student in the area. Great bakery /coffee and good prices. Wine selection always surprises. Fresh produce is plentiful. The prepared food in back has many choices and you can make an easy picnic. They have grocery staples and some gifts too. Just go in there and look around.

Yelp
This is the only place I or my family members have been able to find Keogh's Truffle and Real Irish Butter potato chips, and this alone earns them 5 stars. They are also one of the few places to pick up Outlook Farms White Peach hard cider. Not that either is guaranteed to be easy to find, but at Atkins at least I have hope. On top of the great finds, though, there is nice deli selection, hot sandwiches, a decedent bakery and chocolates section, and of course a lot of high quality fresh veg. There is also an ice cream section outside that I haven't eaten at which has seating both right next to it and a more general seating section where you can eat your deli items. I believe there's also seating indoors but I have not used that myself. Prices in general are not cheap, however, especially in the freezer section. We have found some pretty good deals in the fruits and vegetables, however, and the grapes we just picked up were cheap and are top notch. Another slight negative is that ordering sandwiches is quite slow and a bit complicated, the process involves a lot of standing around and waiting, especially when it is crowded, but even when it does not seem to be particularly crowded. The sandwiches you do finally get are great, though. It takes us about 20 minutes, or maybe a little more, to get to a Atkins so for us it is a rare trip and kind of a "destination" shopping outing, during which we also get lunch. I don't think I would ever get all my groceries here just because the prices are a bit steep and it's too far from me, but for the occasional outing to buy fun things and have a good lunch we are more than happy to set aside some time on the weekend and spend a good afternoon browsing and eating at Atkins.

Yelp
Atkins is a supermarket with seating next to the bakery. The deli has a big food selection and I tried a meatball and turkey reuben sandwich, a wedding meatball soup and a cider donut. It was pleasantly surprising to find international items, reminiscent of countries I've recently visited. The service for check out was quick, and it had a quiet ambiance. It didn't give a farm-like feel, except for the apple cider and soup offerings. The presence of a tourist map for exploration was appreciated. Overall, it was a positive experience, and I would definitely consider returning.

Yelp
Cannot emphasize enough as a business point of view how well this place is run. From friendly staff, quick service and clean / maintained floors. Everything about here is what you should expect a well ran business to be. If your new to the area you can find yourself with a shopping cart full of stuff. I popped for the sakes of it and as I was walking around I found myself getting a bunch of healthy snacks for the work week. I think I did well passing up the candy store despite it all looking delicious. I checked out the deli and found myself getting a sandwich for lunch. Although eating a sundae first spoiled the thought of eating it now. I know where this place for when I am in the area. Certainly worth coming in and supporting your local community.

Yelp
Best farmer's style market I've ever been to. Great produce, meats are excellent cut, wide variety in the bakery, gifts and more. They have excellent premade individual sides, main entrée and all are outstanding. They also make the best deli sandwiches and soup. Everyone working there is very helpful and friendly. It's also a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and a muffin or danish. They make excellent fudge and candies...... it's a one-stop shop of excellent quality.
google avatar

Shoshona K.

Yelp
Everyone loves their cider donuts! Their beer collection is hip & constantly being updated with the newest selections.

Carol L.

Yelp
Wow! Totally surprised how expensive everything was....a 5.5 oz bag of Pretzel Chips Dark Chocolate Drizzlers was $7.39!!!!! Are you kidding..... Didn't know the price until I got at checkout and it was rung up. Decided to let it go and not create an issue----the gal at the register was extremely unfriendly. No hello, etc. that one usually receives when checking out and certainly there was no thank you for shopping here. It's ok, I won't shop here again.

Yelp
I love Atkins! Since I discovered this more than 4 years ago I always make a point to visit every couple weeks. The produce is fresh and local! They have a great beer and wine section with an amazing selection of craft ciders too. I enjoy visiting most during the fall - the cider donuts are a must. It's also a great place to get a variety of fall pumpkins and decor. In the summer, I can still find a reason to come. They have an ice cream window that serves classic ice cream and soft serve. The last time I visited, I picked up a cherry dipped cone. Perfection!

Yelp
Fantastic market! The staff here is really friendly and helpful, able to answer questions about the many offerings and provide recommendations. The grocery portion is well-stocked with great products and lots of fresh produce. Many local specialties are featured as well. The highlight to me is the prepared food counters, especially the baked goods. I had some amazing donuts and very good coffee. Atkins Farms feels like the perfect combination of a grocery store and a farmer's market. Definitely the place to go for great food options, whether you'll be making something yourself or letting them do the cooking for you.

Marg H.

Yelp
Horrible service and super dirty. 3 women working behind bakery counter doing nothing with arms folded. Every table filthy and asked one if they had anything to clean tables. She lazily pointed to spray bottle and says Yah there's stuff over there. We asked a question about the maple sugar. They looked at us and said did you ring the candy bell?? So we ring the candy bell. They look at us and ignore us. Felt like I was being pranked. Serious lack of work ethic and management here. One bright spot - the deli guy was nice.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
I just love Atkins so much. If you're looking for a cozy bakery a grocery store featuring local produce, this spot is for you. Their apple cider donuts are next level good. This place is everything I love about New England wrapped up in a store. Check them out if you're ever in the area!

Clementine O.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our visit for the extensive selection of local beers, fruits and vegetables (purple peppers and plums), local jams, and excellent fresh juices. It is also excellent for souvenir shopping - I am a repeat customer of their decorative bunches of Purple and multicolored corn, (some purely decorative, some can be made into popcorn), gorgeous wreaths of dried flowers ($50-75) and dried flower posies, local crafts galore.
google avatar

Logan D.

Yelp
4/5 overall, 3/5 for donuts! Not very crowded around 10:00AM on a Sunday. Pros: -Donuts! Way more varieties than I thought--both cake and yeast. -Donuts are inexpensive -- Staff donut recommendation: cider donut $1.98 for 2 donuts Cider Donut Small cake donut with sugar coating. Soft cake that was a bit dry. Would definitely be better warm. Honey Dip Plain glazed donut. Very thick. Good amount of glaze, but not particularly memorable.

Jt R.

Yelp
Fresh local vegetables, fresh made sandwiches, bakery items , deli, wine local area beers sold . Cider donuts , ice cream sold on seasonal basis. Prices a bit higher than big box stores . Area to sit in and enjoy a coffee or sandwich. Busy on weekends , near local colleges and the Notch hiking just up the road. Grab a snack and go hiking.

Yelp
AH MAZ ING. Atkins Farms is so great. I've ordered for delivery to our college kid, and they are so helpful. In person, they have so many options of fresh produce year-round, it's really great. It's such a pleasant and enjoyable place, you can just block out the sometimes-high prices and enjoy. Don't forget to get some incredibly yummy soft-serve ice cream in warm weather.
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
Loved this place. Anything you may want you can get here. We had pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Everything was incredible. Freshly made, quality ingredients with great taste and very fair price. Can't wait to go back. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I may not be fully equipped to provide a review but I can vouch for their coffee, the bakery counter, the breadth of products and beautiful produce, as well as a nice beer selection and gift area. Definitely an Eastern European influence, like Polish donuts and kielbasa abd other clues picked up. Overall, what a great place.
google avatar

Shad O.

Yelp
I take all out-of-towners for a good produce shop and to browse through the mustards, candies, olive oils, teas, etc. There are always new, interesting, and high quality types of produce widely available at Atkins. The prices for produce aren't outrageous, and that's a win. The rest of the grocery section is overpriced but I do manage to impulse buy a little something each time I go in. The general consensus is that the Cider Donuts aren't to be skipped. You can buy a half dozen either in the aisle prebagged or fresh from the case.

Yelp
The first time I saw Atkins Farms was during my last visit when we were taking the back roads way to the Trader Joes in Hadley. I distinctly remember wanting to stop because the farm looked so inviting, and finally on this visit I got to do so. The overall word to describe Atkins farm is 'Charming', it is exactly that. Not only is it very well organized with country style decor but all the items just seem to motivate you to stroll down the isle and spend probably more than required time there. There are loads of local items there and a great treat for those of us from out of town who are looking for something unique to bring back to family or friends. All of this being said, if I were a local, I'd probably only shop the sale items which are definitely worth it. On our visit they had 3lb bags of sweet onions for 99 cents, dude... Not only that but we picked up this incredibly smooth shiraz wine from Austria for only $6, just an incredible value! Last but not least, the apple cider donuts; do it.

Yelp
Exactly one year ago today I stopped in to get 2 gift baskets. The pre-made ones didn't have what I wanted. So they said they would do 2 Custom baskets and it would be 30mins. I went around the store and got everything I needed for the 2 baskets and then waited 30mins and they were all done. Today I called to find out if they were still doing custom baskets and they tell me 48hrs notice. I said a year ago you did it on the spot and now you are telling me 48 hrs. Absolutely horrible customer service. I have to drive 100 miles to go here and going twice 2 days before Christmas is crazy. This is why they DESERVE 1 STAR!
google avatar

Yelp
Holly in the bakery made our wedding cake dream come true. Couldn't have imagined a more beautiful and unique cake! Everyone couldn't stop raving about how delicious it was (red velvet).

Yelp
As a UMASS alum and parent of a recent grad and a current student, I, surprisingly, had never been to Atkins Farms' flagship store (I had been to their store in North Amherst which, sadly, recently closed.) My younger son and I went for a visit last week to find a bustling scene with long line to get in. The line moved quickly and were surprised at the vast array of offerings from fresh produce to baked goods to gourmet foods to deli to meat and seafoods, prepared foods; you name it! And it's a great spot to make your fall pumpkin-picking pilgrimage! We'll be back soon!
google avatar

Patricia V.

Yelp
Lovely market, it you don't live close by it's worth a visit when in the area. We visited during the holiday. Baked good we're great, highly recommend their lemon pound cake.
google avatar

Thomas D.

Yelp
The store is beautiful and always nice. Walked in to get our annual cider donuts. $5.50 for 6 small cider donuts! Their prices are way higher than everyone else.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Atkins Farms is a great place. Much improved since my last visit. They offer apple picking in the fall and on the Saturday we stopped in they had a scarecrow making event and a lovely selection of pumpkins and gourds for fall decorating. The store and eating area is beautiful. Great selection of produce, spices, a full bakery, maple syrup, candy, etc. I had a delicious apple cider do-nut. Tons of people hanging out there on a beautiful Saturday fall afternoon. Great local business!

Chris B.

Yelp
Haven't stopped in on over 30 years and was surprised to see what they've become. They're a cross between a commercial grocery store and a regional co-op. Some stuff is made on site while most is out of a bag. Most fresh produce appears to be local. We noticed almost ALL of the deli salads and items were the same commercial junk you find in grocery stores. I recognized the pierogi were from a frozen box brand I use...the seam press markings are unique to the brand...not shy to over charge for them!! The bakery was ok as was the coffee bar. All in all, nothing outstanding product or quality-wise. Charming as all get out but not worth going out of your way for.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
I have been here a few times now and absolutely love it! I live a great deal away from Amherst so they only thing I initially knew about Atkins was the apple cider donuts. Boy they do not disappoint. The next time I shopped here was during a weekend stay at a BnB. This time I sampled the robust produce selection and noticed the variety of grocery, meat and fish items for sale. They do a great job! I can also recommend the fudge and there is a lot of it. Look for the beer selection as well, which features many local brews. I wish my local places were as good as this one!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
The best apple cider doughnuts in Massachusetts. There are few things that warm my soul like autumn in Western Mass with as many doughnuts as my tiny hands can hold.
google avatar

Jaja L.

Yelp
This market is worth the drive. Baked goods are yummy! Beer and cider selection perfection! Fun to find Imported Italian products. Each time I go I find something new!
google avatar

Ben K.

Yelp
Great place quality product, but long lines and high prices. It's nice to have, but I certainly don't so they're on a regular basis
google avatar

Jen D.

Yelp
Everything you need with the best local produce, wonderful bakery and deli, hot and cold food bar, and lovely flower/plant arrangements.
google avatar

Susan R.

Yelp
I enjoy Atkins farm year round but especially in the fall. I stopped in briefly for a small package of donuts. Their Napoleans in the bakery are fantastic. I picked up two for a family member that loves them. ($7) A very tiny maple cupcake $2.75. Somehow in a tiny lunch size bag I had spent $14. But when you buy something at Atkins, it's always delicious and of great quality. One of my favorite stops in Amherst.
google avatar

Mai L.

Yelp
Cute grocery store that offers a good selection of local produce. I really enjoyed the locally grown cantaloupe. The jam was ok, got the apricot and thought that it was a bit too thick making it hard to spread and taste wasn't anything out of the ordinary. The cider donuts are pretty good. Also tried the three cheese loaf bread, it was a bit dense and more doughy than yeasty.
google avatar

Lance B.

Yelp
Appreciate the ever improving selection of local craft beer, and of course Atkins bakery is always a good source of delicious items.

Kathi C.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches! Their 1/2 sandwiches are huge and definitely enough. I had a tuna with lettuce tomato and provolone it was excellent! Their old fashioned donuts are delicious. My grandchild loves the cookie club.
google avatar

Gina F.

Yelp
Excellent customer service, coffee and pastries are so good! Will be back every time I visit my daughter at Umass Amherst
google avatar

Julia F.

Yelp
Really charming interior and general ambiance! I must leave a one star review for the awful deli experience I had here. Waited THIRTY minutes for a chicken panino from the deli, during which the person working the counter lamented multiple times how slow it was but did not attempt to make the experience any faster. I wouldn't be that pressed about how long the wait was for a deli sandwich if the sandwich had been near edible but it truly wasn't. Gave me the wrong kind of meat, cheese and bread. It was more of a sludgy blob than a crisp sandwich :-(

Yelp
MAKE SURE YOU CHECK OUT ATKINS FARM!!! THIS IS A MUST-VISIT PLACE IN NEW ENGLAND!!! I was advised by a waitress in Northampton to check out Atkin's Farm for their incredible apple cider donuts (she was right- they are INCREDIBLE) so when I happened to accidentally drive by, I couldn't help but stop. As I wandered into the market, I could not believe my eyes. The extensive marketplace opens up into a full-blown grocery store with the freshest and most unique ingredients of New England. I had to stop myself from going full-blown grocery shopping!! I decided to grab two fresh shark steaks from the deli in back -- and WOW!! Not only was it soooooo delicious, but the price was unbeatable! I also picked up some apple cider donuts - originally they were for my boyfriend, because I don't really like apple-flavored things. But after trying a bite of his first donut, I am pretty sure I ate the rest of the bag lol!! (They were especially good on top of my ice cream!!)

Shannon R.

Yelp
Excellent selection of produce and other food items. Friendly staff. They also have an ice-cream stand
google avatar

Sue S.

Yelp
Good products but way too expensive. They also need more cashiers..lines too slow and long. I also miss the mozzarella pesto balsamic sandwich and they refuse to make it now.
google avatar

Elle V.

Yelp
Come for the donuts, stay for the local fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, and even the deli counter with sandwiches and freshly prepared dishes. Atkins is fresh, local and fun, with seasonal options: veggie starts and flowers for spring, pumpkins and corn stalks for fall, and Christmas trees. But through all this, remember why you came: donuts! One of the few places that makes a raised sugar donut: simply delicious. Their apple fritters are great. The pumpkin, blueberry, or cider cake donuts are out of this world. And this review would be remiss not to mention the maple bacon donut. Yes! A donut that tastes like a pancake breakfast. I'm surprised you're still reading. Go already.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Atkins is a lovely market that provides fruit and vegetables from not only local farms but from their own as well. Excellent quality at good prices. Can't beat the homemade taste of their fudge and other bakery items. Atkins reminds me of a Trader Joe's but more focused on the local aspect by selling locally made products. I respect them for that. They have a deli and you can get sandwiches prepared while you wait. While waiting in line to check out (the line goes quick!), take a peak at the lovely indoor plants they have along the way. I get tempted to take one home every time I'm there! I also can't forget to mention during the fall season, they have great prices on luscious full mums and huge pumpkins. P.S. don't leave without getting your hands on their handmade apple cider donuts! You'll thank me later.
google avatar

Audrey M.

Yelp
Huge shoutout to Atkins Farms for coming through at the last minute. We have a terminally ill friend with little appetite for anything other than apple cider donuts - a near impossible ask in the D.C. area, where it's a seasonal item. Thanks to a local Arlington donut shop owner, we obtained the info for Atkins Farms and were ecstatic to find that they ship their apple cider donuts nationwide. We placed an online order super early Sunday morning, and asked about getting the order expedited due to our friend's condition. A store associate replied promptly, noting the order had been processed and would be shipped out first thing Monday morning. By Wednesday afternoon, a box of 3 dozen apple cider donuts was in the hands of our excited and grateful friend. Thanks, Atkins Farms!!

Yelp
This place is awesome - it basically feels like a local Trader Joe's except better because it's huge, has tons of variety, and it looks so welcoming. The place is super clean and it even smells FRESH. Expect all of the produce and products to be super fresh as well. The staff are so nice! If you want to indulge, definitely get their apple cider or their cider donuts!

Yelp
For the second time Atkins delivered an expensive fruit basket from one of my clients to the wrong address. Fortunately the recipient was kind enough to get in her car and drive the item to my house. But for that kindness my client would never have received a "thank you," likely thinking I was ungrateful. When I telephoned Atkins and spoke to a woman who claimed to be one of the owners, she hung up on me. BEWARE -- spend your money elsewhere! Would rate no stars if I could. Michael Pill, Shutesbury, MA
