I took a lei making class here last weekend. It was perfect.
When I arrived, I saw that the class was organized and set up nicely. There was a place for each student with the supplies and tools we'd need. The class was in a covered space with a wall open to the farm. It was a slightly breezy day so the smell of the nearby flowers wafted in.
Class started with Mike giving a history and overview of the farm before he scampered off to tend the plants and trees. Tracy started the class by teaching us to make a flower "corsage" for our hair. Her instructions were simple and clear. Within about 10 minutes almost every student had flowers in her hair.
Next we started the process of making a lei. We had our own personal basket with plenty of plumeria flowers. Burgundy, pink, white, yellow. It was easy to select and string flowers. If we didn't have what we needed, we could select from a community basket of flowers.
Tracy taught us about the different types of leis, such as single or double. She also described the different styles of leis and head leis. If I can shuffle things around, I'm going to try to go back and take the head lei class with flowers and greenery.
It impressed me that Tracy said their farm creates leis for paddle-out memorial services. Because of this, she doesn't use fishing line to create leis. She doesn't want seals and turtles and seabirds and other creatures to get tangled in the fishing line after the flowers are gone. She said she experimented and landed on using cotton crochet thread instead. I admire her greatly for being eco-friendly.
They offer plant sales a couple times a year and classes here and there. Although my review is about the lei making class, Mike teaches classes about growing and caring for plumeria plants/trees. I recommend getting on their mailing list so you can find out about their events.
A completely pleasant, peaceful, aloha experience.
