Alton Brown Adopts Local Shelter Dog | Eater Atlanta

"On May 23 the organization rescued 78 dogs from a neglectful Murray County home, including a Boston terrier named Abigail (aka Scabigail). Abigail arrived covered in mange and with infected scratches but received treatment and healed under their care; her adopter plans to keep her name. The rescue effort highlights the shelter's role in recovering and rehabilitating animals from severe neglect." - Sarra Sedghi

Going to the Atlanta Humane Society for a pet adoption was the best pet adoption experience we ever had. The staff and volunteers were very polite, knowledgeable and supportive, an incredible team. The facilities are beautiful and extremely clean. We were interested in three puppies that we thought would be a great fit not just for us but for our seven year old husky who recently lost his friend, and it was a perfect match from the beginning. We are so happy we are able to provide Brennan with a loving home, and a big backyard to play and run around. If you are considering adopting a dog or a cat check out the Atlanta Humane Society in person. If you are unable to adopt please consider donating whatever you can, your support will be put to great use to help dogs and cats and to maintain the beautiful facility. Thank you to everyone at the Atlanta Humane Society! 😁👍

If you’re thinking about adding a furry roommate who won’t pay rent but will steal your heart (and maybe your favorite spot on the couch), the **Atlanta Humane Society** is the place to be. I had the joy of adopting my beautiful fur baby here, and let me tell you, it was love at first sniff. First tip: older dogs are usually cheaper, so if you’re smart (or just want a calmer companion who doesn’t destroy your shoes), go for the seasoned pros. Puppies? Oh, they’re adorable little chaos machines… and they come with a “please empty your wallet” fee. Seriously, bring snacks for yourself too, they’re exhausting. 🐾 The staff and volunteers here are absolute legends. John, a volunteer, was beyond amazing, kind, patient, and clearly a dog whisperer. I’m convinced he’s part-dog because every animal immediately adored him. There was also a lovely young lady (I forgot her name, but I’ll post pics so she gets the proper love and recognition!) who was just as helpful, sweet, and made me feel like I wasn’t just another applicant. No rushing, no judgment, no “hurry up” vibes, just pure kindness, which is so appreciated. Bonus for military folks: show your ID and enjoy a discount **plus** a free leash, toy, and bag of food. Yes, free. No hidden fees, no fine print, just pure generosity. Honestly, the entire place is clean, organized, and full of love. You’ll leave with a full heart, a wagging tail, and maybe a few extra gray hairs from your new furry “boss,” but it’s completely worth it. Atlanta Humane Society isn’t just a shelter, it’s basically where happiness has paws and fur. Pictures included of John as well..

I just adopted my new fur baby Franklin here yesterday and it was a fantastic experience! The staff is helpful and friendly, the process was efficient and most importantly the facility is clean and cozy for the pets! Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Adopt don’t shop!!!

I went into the Atlanta Humane Society where my partner and I were made to feel welcome immediately. They allowed to me to look at the dogs I was interested in and were very upfront about the personality of the animals they were taking care of. We have a kid and elderly cat so as you can imagine, it was important to have some insight on how each animal behaves. That being said, even on the ones they are not fully sure of (based on information collected from fostering or a trial run), they encouraged a trial run with no pressure to adopt whatsoever. I opted for this option, when I brought my precious Zany home. Thankfully he was a good fit. But in the meantime, they provided him with flea/tick/heartworm medicine as well as food as well as a guarantee for emergency medical services at their approved vet during the trial run. They were very thorough about Zany's needs and history. Thankfully, he is the perfect fit for our family and he has really opened up his heart to us. The adoption process was incredibly easy and I was able to do it over the phone. If I ever want to adopt another cat or dog in the future, I plan to return to the Humane Society. I recommend them to anyone looking for a new furry family member. They truly love and care for every single animal that comes through their doors and matching them with their forever homes and will do everything they can to support the families who are looking to adopt! Thank you, to the staff at the Atlanta Humane Society! I can't imagine my life without my sweet Zany and I will always be grateful for you guys bringing him into our lives!

We got the perfect, well behaved, precious kitty from the Atlanta Humane Society. She is an angel! We loved that the Humane Society does a Foster First program, which gives you the option to foster a pet for 2 weeks before adoption. The staff was so accommodating, helpful and sweet!

As life has been lifing, I found myself needing someone to care for my grand dog as we had to make some suddenb life decisions. Giving away my grand dog wasn't an option as he is a very special part of our family. I reached out to an organization for resources and they referred me to the Atlanta Humane Society for a possible pet foster home through their Pet Support Crisis Program. I went to the website and completed an application with a brief synopsis of my situation and sent a picture. About two weeks later, we got the call that a foster parent was available. I was so happy to hear the news because (1) we weren't going to have to give him away, (2) he would be loved by someone else while he was away and (3) all of my worries about his vaccinations, checkups, groomed etc all went away because this program would take care of everything for me! Long story short, the three months that he was away wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. We emailed when we wanted to check on him and received fast replies back as well as pictures of him frolicking in the back yard with other dogs. He had a big smile on his face which made us even happier. On the day that we picked him up, I was so happy to see him. I cried allot and constantly thanked the employees at the AHS for having the Pet Support Crisis Program , and for the volunteer that kept our family member safe, healthy, and happy during a tragic time in our lives. I would highly recommend the AHS over and over again for this program as well as finding your next four legged dog or cat. Don't buy, adopt! Peace, love and hugs!

Last Sunday, December 21st, I made the difficult decision to surrender my cat to the Atlanta Humane Society because my apartment was not an ideal living situation for him. Almost immediately after leaving, I regretted my decision and knew I wanted him back. When I surrendered him, I provided his food: Wilderness Salmon dry cat food and 15 cans of Reveal wet food. My husband and I clearly explained that he only eats seafood-based food and that the wet food must be the Reveal brand. We even planned to make weekly donations to ensure he continued receiving the proper food while in their care. We were able to bring our cat home on Friday, December 26th (it would have been earlier, but the shelter was closed for the holidays and he had not yet been posted for adoption). After coming home, he ate a small amount of his Wilderness Salmon dry food, but very little overall. On Saturday, December 27th, he refused all food and began throwing up bile. As of today, Sunday, December 28th, it is clear that he is sick. He hasn’t eaten, repeatedly vomiting, and acting very unlike himself. I contacted the Atlanta Humane Society to ask whether he had been receiving the food we provided, as his symptoms seemed consistent with a reaction to unfamiliar food. I spoke with Jazell, who informed me that there were no notes indicating that my cat was to be given the food we dropped off. She explained that he was most likely fed the shelter’s standard cat food. I was also told that the dry food we provided was thrown away because it had been opened, and the wet food was donated.. Information that was never communicated to us at the time of surrender. Had we known this, we would have made different arrangements. I was simply told that I would need to take him to the vet. Overall, I am extremely upset and heartbroken by this experience and deeply regret surrendering my pet to the Atlanta Humane Society. Based on other reviews, I believed I could trust them to follow basic care instructions, but that was not the case. I would not recommend this organization to pet owners who have specific dietary or medical needs for their animals. If you are in the difficult position of having to surrender a pet, I strongly suggest finding a place that truly listens, communicates clearly, and prioritizes the individual needs, safety, and well-being of your animal.

I contacted the AHS because I had to give up my cats after landlord said they were fine then after I settled in he changed his mind. I had 6 cats which the mom had been with me for over a year since a baby. She had 5 kitties which were so cute I refused to give any away. I had never been fund of cats until my Belle came along..I loved my babies. I cooked for them. I basically spoiled them. I requested that all 6 cats be adopted together. On the day of my appointment to take them in, it was a nice, clean environment. No smells. Attentive front desk guy. So I began to ask questions and one was they all will be adopted together right. It was then and there I was told probably not. One of my kitties were having anxiety on the way. I already had been crying so now I'm ready to turn out the door. Finding out they gave them a shot pissed me off. This was before I paid or signed any paperwork. I regret not taking my cats back and just dealing with the landlord..God never told me to get rid of my cats and I really wished i hadnt. I requested the twins, Macy and Gracy NOT BE SEPERATED. I goes online to see had they posted them. They never got posted as a family. Macy and Tiger and the momma Belle were the only ones posted. I seen whole families posted. They never attempted to post all my babies. Lightning and Goldie the 2 boys never got posted. I was VERY UPSET. I gave them specifics about my cats. Birthday and all. They POSTED SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I WAS LIVID. The only good thing was Tiger and Lightning got adopted together...this was April 7th, 2024... a day after my bday. I never even thought about righting a review. Some of us love our pets even though we may have to give them up. WE SHOULD NOT BE MISLED OR TOLD ANYTHING. EVERYTHING SHOULD BE UPFRONT. DOPING THE ANIMALS AND KEEPING THEM IN CAGES WAS ANOTHER NO FOR ME. MY CATS HAD BEEN IN A CAGE 3 TIMES AND THAT WAS WHEN RIDING. I EXPLAINED THAT TO THEM. I TOLD THEM I COOKED FOR MY CATS AND THEY LOVED TO EAT. IM PRETTY SURE NONE OF THIS WAS NOTED OR GIVING TO THE NEW OWNERS. THEY SUCK FOR THAT...

Yelp
Ooo la la . After months of emails about the new facility, it is finally open and well worth the wait. Off of Perry Blvd. Still in Northwest, Atlanta. This place is so open and spacious and spotless. Complete with plenty of photo oops for your time line. We wondered around and got to visit with the animals. The purpose of the visit was to help with their Deck the halls campaign by delivering stocking stuffers. If you can't make it for a tour you can contribute online. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/294PN6B1NYIL0/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex It was fun to talk to the informative staff, interact with the pets and witness a couple of adoptions. Go see for yourself.

Yelp
I came here for puppy yoga. This is such a nice and large space. It's bigger than the old one. Lots of parking. Nice and helpful staff.

Yelp
I WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS!!!! This establishment is EXTREMELY incompetent... We came to adopt a dog but decided to foster him for a few days to be certain and not even 30 minutes into having him he attacked the dog we already had resulting in a hospital visit!!! We planned to bring him back but they closed at 6pm and ignored the phone!! Then he literally destroyed our door frame and fence trying to escape!! These people didn't tell us about his aggressive behavior which DID NOT come out of nowhere!!

Yelp
I went to possibly rehome a pet. When I walked in to the foster center I wasn't greeted at all by the person at the desk. I just stood there as they typed on their keyboard. I finally after like 1 min asked if I should wait here or am I in the right spot. They just nodded their head and resumed typing. After 5 mins of standing I asked them again if someone was coming. They begrudgingly told me someone should be coming. I just didn't feel welcomed or acknowledged.

Yelp
So we went to go find another fur baby to join the one that we already have at home and the people here are so amazing and so helpful. It takes a special person to volunteer where there's nothing but barking dogs and crying cats and not be tempted to take every single one home.parking is convenient and available and there are even dog runs for you to meet your possible new family member. Many thanks to everyone at this facility for all that you do and all that you continue to do I am forever grateful.

Yelp
First let me start off by saying that a humane society or shelter is COMPLETELY different from a breeder and I feel that people go to adoption shelters with breeder's expectations and give shelters, who are only trying to assist to the best of their ability a bad rap. Well, I am here to say that I had a GREAT experience. I have been searching for a particular breed for a while and was unsuccessful Well, to be honest I couldn't afford the alleged breeders industry standard pricing. So I took a risk and started researching thoroughly. After months of searching I gave up. Now, I don't know if any of you all are believers and believe in God or not but this my testimony of HIs goodness. Anyway, I was so consumed with finding this particular breed. I had so much faith that I sowed seed for a particular breed, gender, look, color, etc. I even told the Lord I wanted an intelligent dog who was extremely chill yet playful. And I said Lord so I know its you, I don't want to have to pay for her. Okay, my seed was sown and I start researching some more. So much that it consumed me. Finally, I heard the Lord say stop, trust me with your desire. Let me tell once that happened, it was around 2am I got a notification from adopt a pet on behalf of the Atlanta Humane society. And what do you know, I was staring at what I was believing God for. I rushed to click on the picture to get more info and the picture was gone. Slightly discouraged I went to the Atlanta Humane Society's page and low and behold there she was what I was believing for with a $350 adoption fee. I hurried and put in my preadoption application and went to sleep. I woke up that next morning with a message from Heather giving me more information on the pup and asking if I wanted to schedule a meet and greet. I think this was on a Sunday or Monday. She connected me with the young lady who was fostering her and we immediately hit it out. She was extremely helpful and went out of her way to answer questions and send me pictures and videos. Fast forward. We scheduled a meet and greet for the upcoming Friday with the Foster. Now remember the adoption fee was $350. That didn't scare me away because I was believing God. So a day before the meet and greet, I go to the Atlanta Humane Society's website to see if there is anything that I need to do for the meet and greet. You know properly prepare myself and THAT's when I saw it. "FOR THIS WEEKEND ONLY ALL ADOPTION FEES ARE BEING WAVED". WHAT!??!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HALLELUJAH! Sometime between the time I contacted the Atlanta Humane Society and my meet and greet they decided to waive all adoptions fees. And, I am blessed with my forever blessing. Thank you Atlanta Humane Society for Everything for the community to choosing an AMAZING foster for her (Which still keeps in contact with me and readily answers any questions I may have)!

Yelp
I went to plenty of animal shelters and this is the cleanest one I've seen and very professional didn't have to go through a lot of paper work to get the kitten my daughter always wanted (orange tabby) pulled me to the side and explained everything that the cat has gone through and how to take care of him and even gave me food that they were feeding him I definitely recommend this 100% if you wanna become a new pet owner

Yelp
OK this is the BEST RESCUE facility Ever. SPCA, Rescue facilities .. this is the place to visit animal shelter whether you want to adopt or you are a shelter director or supporter. See first hand how GREAT a shelter can be. Maybe -- even though it's tough -- it's POSSIBLE!!!! *** HOW DO YOU KNOW? I've been to US kennels & pet Rescue facilities in NY, NJ, FL, and Italy and had about 20 dogs and let's say about 25 cats in my life, (mostly rescue...) LOOKING FOR LOVE?. I moved to FL after a breakup & took a sales job, and I was so depressed once or twice a week I'd spend lunch hour at one of 5-6 local TampaBay shelters. Due to lack of (you name it)-funds, help).... So many shelters were overcrowded, smelly, short staffed but --- I got to stick my fingers in the bars -- and pet a few animals in as severe need of affection --- as I was. WE CAN ADOPT? Fast forward to ATL GA. My wonderful fiancee said "we might want adopt a cat" once we get finished traveling... I Yelped right away and found 5-6 shelters in ATL... I called a few... ugh. "No you can't pet the animals here" , try calling this other place... try pet stores.... so.. i almost gave up.... BUT WHERE? After reading more reviews, I decided to drag my "honey" 40 min on a Saturday to South Atlanta, to a "surprise destination" the Arthur M Blank Family Animal Shelter.... REACTION? My guy went from "what are we doing here" & "you go in & see if they are open for visit".... To "we are adopting a cat".... (From a picky guy in like 30 min).... CLEAN AND SPOTLESS? Yes! Not only that... the place has No Smell, Spacious, the Volunteers like Keith & Kimberly are ALL super nice, has Play Areas, Meet & Greet animal areas, Vets, outdoor animal play areas for dogs and more. REASONABLE PRICING?. (Yes. all due to donations I'm sure). I know my sister has spent as much as $250 on each of her 5 rescue cats, and here at Arthur M Blank shelter ( in 2023) your initial "cat fee" is starts at $75 --a fraction, with all the shots (if I read the sign right)... WORTH THE VISIT?. Whether you visit, foster, volunteer, donate or adopt, Arthur M Blank Family Humane Society will leave you SMILING. NEARBY GREAT RESTAURANTS?. After you "drag" your honey there, see Fido or Kitty eat & wag or purr, whatever their reaction you can immediately soothe their shock with some great food -- there are some Great Restaurants nearby... check Yelp. (FOOD hits the heart so maybe they will warm up to the idea of Adoption if they haven't fallen in love already LOL.) SUMMARY... WE LOVED OUR VISIT. (I wanted to take ALL the cats home.) We will be returning to pet, volunteer, foster or adopt!!

Yelp
I had no intentions of adopting an animal, I simply wanted to visit and pet a few kittens. Fortunately, I did walk away with a furry friend. Her name was saucy and I changed it to shadow. She is magnificent in every single way. I lucked out with her. I'm so thankful that I came here.

Yelp
Very easy adoption process. got my puppy there recently. very nice location and staff

Yelp
I adore the animals here and the facility is really clean. However the wait to adopt a pet after you select one is very long. With the exception of one young lady, the volunteers had a weird off putting vibe. One older volunteer assumed that a young woman of color who wanted to volunteer was actually seeking court ordered volunteerism. It was highly inappropriate and off/putting.
