Virginia Beach Is the Birthplace of East Coast Surfing—It's Getting the First 'Wavegarden' in the U.S.

"Set to open by July within a 10.35-acre entertainment district developed with Pharrell Williams on the former site of the original Dome, this surf lagoon is the first in the United States to use Wavegarden wave-generation technology. Located just two blocks from the ocean, it will produce consistent, year-round rideable waves with seven wave settings—offering gentle rollers for beginners up to fast, barreling breaks for advanced riders. Sessions last 55 minutes and start at $100, and on-site coaching will be available, led by local pro Jason Borte, the director of coaching and a 2016 East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame inductee. Anchoring a mixed-use project of shops, restaurants, residences, and an open-air concert venue, the lagoon builds on Virginia Beach’s long surf heritage and aims to deliver reliable waves-on-demand that help both novices and the next generation of competitive East Coast surfers develop their skills." - Erin Gifford

I am stoked about this park and how it will continue to cause the City to flourish. I come here on some lunch breaks just to watch people surf to froth. The surfing itself is next level. Definitely get a session in if you haven’t. It’s worth it! Thanks for the hard work!

Awesome. Simply awesome. I’ve been tracking this for decades and it has finally come to fruition. Surfed the G1 version in Austin TX in 2017. That was fun. This one is funner. Better waves. Better selection in in just the right spot. Wave deprived Virginia Beach!!! Central in the East coast, known for condition and consistency issues. Lots of wave hungry folks near here. I’m preparing to go broke.

It could not get better than that!! Super helpful, nice and friendly staff, very well organized, top notch structure including bathrooms with private shower, amenities and plenty of seating everywhere. Still under construction and with limited food options and very restricted shop, but it's coming

Amazing place hands down, waves are top notch, staff is friendly & helpful. Beautiful place to spend the day & definitely worth every penny. I will be returning regularly. Extremely impressed with all that went into making this amazing addition to VB. Hands down phenomenal job to all those who made & continue to make this place a gem in my hometown. Well done.

My 12 yo son loved his first ride so much, he signed up to go the next day! So impressed by this facility as well as the staff who were there wave side to provide helpful tips between waves. The only complaint I have is that parents of minors surfing should not be charged to enter the park to supervise. $25 to enter is ridiculously on top of the $130 price for an hour session. The park really needs to think about this moving forward in order as I feel it will deter younger surfers and families from being able to enjoy the park.

I can’t possibly explain how excellent the customer service is at Atlantic Park Surf…. It is truly on the next level. I had several questions, needed help rescheduling, fixing a few things on my account, etc. and not just one person but FOUR separate men on their staff went out of their way to take their time and be as helpful as they could possibly be at different times throughout our day. The waves are, of course amazing, they speak for themselves, but the people that work here are what really send it home when it comes to ensuring you have the best experience. They clearly take great pride in their work and value each and every customer. We will be back soon!

Top tier customer service, life guards are top tier. Booker an advanced session and haven’t surfed in a couple of years, couple waves in I paddled in and told them I was way in over my head. They credited me another session at a more beginner level. Super cool of them honestly, Matthew at the front desk was super understanding. Would recommend this place to anybody looking to surf. Place is amazing!

We had an excellent family day at the surf park. Staff is very friendly, especially the instructors who did the novice class for my husband and kids. Everyone was helpful for each stage and day was throughly enjoyed. Park is beautiful. 🌊🌊🏄‍♂️🌊

Yelp
We've heard about this surf pool for years, and it finally happened! It's beautiful, with 2 wave pools - one for surfing right and another for surfing left. You can sign up for different sessions depending on whether you're a beginner, intermediate or expert, and you can even sign up for lessons. Prices depend on what type of wave you're signing up for, but they're about $100 for 55 minutes. The number of surfers also depends on the wave type, but it ranges from 20-40 surfers per session with the opportunity to catch 10-15 waves per session. This surf wave pool is outdoors and not heated, so in the winter, you'll need to borrow or bring a hooded wetsuit. There is a $25 fee if you want to just watch surfers in the wave pool which is a bit of a bummer. I haven't personally surfed in the pool yet, but people I know have and they said it's better than they expected. I have heard that the pool is shallow for barrels, as one person got stitches on his head after scraping the bottom.

Yelp
Incredible experience! I work here and surfed for the very time. If you're new to surfing or never surfed before, this is the perfect place to learn. The lifeguards, coaches, and experienced surfers were all so encouraging and hyped me up the entire time . It's also a total vibe! They have an all-day Beach Club pass that comes with access to a pool. So you can come and watch surfing and hangout.
