The 27 Best Restaurants in Nagoya, Japan | Eater

"Sure, Atsuta Horaiken is far from the city center, the wait almost always tops 30 minutes, and it’s expensive, but there’s a reason people have flocked to the hitsumabushi specialist since 1873. The kitchen barbecues eel in a sticky, sweet soy sauce, dices it, and serves it over white rice with the traditional array of garnishes, such as grated wasabi, julienned scallions, and paper-thin nori. Despite the drawbacks, you need to taste this classic Nagoya dish in a classic Nagoya institution. [$$$]" - Nina Li Coomes

It’s good, but not impressively good just be honest. If you visit Atsuta Jingu, make sure to come here first and get into the waiting line. Regarding the unagi, it’s well prepared but I feel a bit overcooked. They registered the good and process of dinning, which I think it’s more for marketing. The portion is, as usual as other Japanese food, not enough. And it comes with little veggies. Again, I still recommend for visitor for the first time as famous food in Nagoya. And that’s it.

Wonderful hitsumabushi. Tasted great eaten in any of the 3 ways recommended, and dessert - the pudding, was very good too. Service was great 👍🏻 Thumbs up to the ladies and the lone gentleman who served us. Attentive to details and accommodating. It was the best lunch my family had in japan this trip.

The best unagi in Japan ! I have eaten at a Michelin star in Tokyo before, Atsuta Horaiken is much better . Eat the kaiseki special course 14,000++ yen just like me. Every dish is spectacular and the staffs were so friendly. I like the private room and the ambience inside. If you come to Nagoya, you have to come here ! Very Delicious !!!

Everything was great! The portion size of the regular was huge—way too much for me to finish, I tried really hard. However, the wait was long, and I probably didn’t need to wait that much. At 9:40 I saw the line and just followed the crowd, but when I finished eating, there was no line. I ended up waiting about two hour 😭maybe because it’s a Thursday. The staff were really kind, and I only spoke English with them since I don’t know Japanese.

A Must-Visit Cultural and Culinary Experience – Plan Ahead!” Atsuta Horaiken Jingu is more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural immersion into the heart of Nagoya’s culinary tradition. As a foreigner, the experience was truly enriching from start to finish. The star of the show is their legendary hitsumabushi – perfectly grilled eel served over rice with an array of condiments and flavors. The dish is presented in three distinct styles: savoring the eel on its own, mixing it with flavorful toppings like wasabi and green onions, and finally, pouring a warm, savory dashi broth over the remaining portion to create a delicious ochazuke. Each step is a delightful journey for the taste buds, showcasing the depth and versatility of this local delicacy. However, a word to the wise: be prepared for a wait! I arrived at 10:30 a.m. to register and didn’t get a table until 14:30. The demand is high, and the wait time can be long, but it’s absolutely worth it. I recommend arriving as early as possible to secure your spot and then explore the nearby Atsuta Shrine while you wait. The restaurant’s atmosphere is steeped in tradition, and the staff are attentive, guiding you through the proper way to enjoy hitsumabushi. It felt like more than just a meal – it was a lesson in Japanese culture and hospitality. For anyone looking to experience the essence of Nagoya’s cuisine, Atsuta Horaiken Jingu is a must-visit. Just be sure to plan ahead and arrive early to register – you won’t regret it! An unforgettable experience for both your palate and your cultural appreciation!

I am totally not a fan of EEL fish, so I ordered a chicken dishes, and my husband ordered an EEL fish set. My husband asked me if I wantto try a little bit, so I did, and guess what! This is the only one I don't dislike! In fact, I like the taste! Awesome food, this is the only word I can say. Must visit! But remember to make a reservation first before visiting Atsuta Shrine. Staff are friendly as well!

5 stars review for sure! Hitsumabushi being a signature dish in Nagoya has made it's mark and coming to this restaurant was the highlight of our trip. Opens at 1130 to 2pm for its first seating and we were lined up T 10AM being 3rd in line. Once we got ushered in, everything was very organized from the waiting area where we take a look at them menu to being seated and served. They were all very attentive and kept refilling our tea. The Grilled Eel arrived fresh and warm, a wooden bowl with charred unagi strips covered on top a bed of steamed Japanese rice is heavenly! 3 ways to enjoy- basically on its own it's already tasty, add in green onions with strips of nori and you get refreshing taste and lastly with everything in then pour the soup on top for a filling meal you'd surprisingly enjoy too. Me and my partner are not big spenders normally but for this specialty dish, it was worth it. Definitely an experience you wouldn't want to miss, make sure it's your list! :)

Yelp
An important Shinto shrine where one of the three Imperial regalia are stored, the Imperial Sword attributed to a gift to the goddess Ameratsu. Excellent, but small, sword museum is attached.

Yelp
Traditional eel prepared here, Hitsumabushi. When we were in Nagoya we went to the main restaurant Honte on Thursday and they were off... so we walked another 10 min to the Jinguten. Yes, they are open. Both locations Honte and Jinguten are like a traditional houses. As you may hear or research already. There is 3 ways to enjoy the Hitsumabushi. The wooden bowl is packed good enough for 4 portion so the last portion u can repeat the way you love. Sauce is not overwhelming the eel nor the fish bone is covering your tongue. This is the most reviewed and rated place in Nagoya. Waiting can be brutal but at least they give u a nice air-conditioned room for hungry eaters http://www.houraiken.com/sp/english/history.html The link is in English. For 3600yen (extra large 5100yen and it is big) is not not super expensive for the qualities you got. You could spend 3000yen easy for eel else where. However, just because you are in Nagoya, spend a good night to enjoy Last but not least... price is up 1/2/2019...

Yelp
If you ever come to visit Nagoya, you have to try unagi here. Three ways to enjoy the famous grilled eel. Eat the first 1/4 of the delicious grilled eel without adding any seasoning; eat the second 1/4 by adding seasoning; eat the third 1/4 by adding seasoning and bouillon. For the last 1/4, eat whatever your favorite of the above choices.

Yelp
とても美味しいでした。 Located just outside 神宮寺, it is one of the stores in Nagoya. It looked like a family owned restaurant. The waitresses were very friendly, although they spoke little English. Recommended by my Japanese friend, I ordered the eel meal set. It turned out to be a great choice. The eel was cooked with a special flavor, and it could be served in four different ways. To help enjoy this special meal, the restaurant even prepared a "How to Eat" guide for non Japanese speaking customers. Although the meal was pricy, it was worth it.

Yelp
There are a few of these famous shops in Nagoya, this one not being the main shop but second tier on the list with ample seating (not so ample parking) that many a local and tourist will make a pilgrimage to whenever in the area. The Unagi, served in the typical style made famous by this restaurant, was absolutely fantastic. Cooked beautifully, with a nice char and a crisp texture, it went very well with the rice, whichever the traditional eating styles you elect to follow--if it's your first time you better follow the order! I prefer the Unagi simply with the rice, followed by the soup approach. All in all I'd highly recommend this shop or its main branch sibling to anyone in the area.

Yelp
Famous and popular unagi restaurant in Nagoya. Highly recommend the Hitsu-mabushi set, as this is one thing Nagoya is known for. You may have to wait in line for two hours in order for a table to become available, even if you get there before the restaurant opens. The Histu-mabushi set is 3,600 yen, but unagi is expensive in general.
