Metro Detroit’s Best Breweries and Taprooms | Eater Detroit

"This OG Detroit brewery used to roll up its garage doors and invite guests into the production facility, where they could drink pints of Dirty Blonde and VJP at a bar tucked in the back. The taproom has since expanded to include a full food menu, dining room, and a rooftop patio that overlooks the Rivertown Warehouse District. Ride a bike down the Dequindre Cut, which connects to Eastern Market, or slide over to Belle Isle, before or after grabbing a beer or two. While no longer an independent craft brewery, it is still among the most recognized brands in the city. Online ordering for carryout is available." - Courtney Burk

We were flying out of Detroit and wanted to grab a bite before boarding since we had some time. We found Atwater Brewery and it was perfect. We were seated quickly and got the best waitress! Andrea! She was delightful. Very professional and fun too. Our family likes to laugh and enjoy- she figured us out quickly and it was an awesome experience. The food was delicious too. The traditional Bratwurst, Motor City Burger and Chicken Tacos were our choices each came with chips that were yummy oh and also a flight of mimosas! and they did not disappoint. If you have time- stop by, have some grub and drink and tell Andrea hi for us!

It’s rare to find a food spot at any airport that has a nice combo of great service, great atmosphere and great food. This turned out to be one of the places. My expectations were very low but it ended up being a great dinner experience. I got a burger with a side salad. It was great. The waitress was very attentive, nice and quick. There was live music from a multi-instrumentalist that added to the atmosphere of “outside of airport”. Really enjoyed my time here.

Every time I fly through Detroit Metro Airport, I make a point to stop at Atwater Brewery in Concourse D—and it’s always worth it. Whether you’ve got a layover or just need a place to relax before your flight, this spot delivers a comfortable atmosphere, great service, and a true taste of Detroit. Despite being located inside an airport, the vibe feels more like a local brewery than a typical terminal restaurant. It’s clean, casual, and welcoming, with just enough Detroit character to remind you you’re in the Motor City. The food is excellent—especially the burger, which is juicy, flavorful, and served hot every time I’ve ordered it. It’s exactly the kind of satisfying meal you want before a long flight. They also offer wings, sandwiches, and snacks that pair perfectly with a cold drink, all served quickly without sacrificing quality. What really makes this place stand out is the craft beer selection. Atwater’s own brews—like Dirty Blonde, Vanilla Java Porter, and others—are available on tap. You can even get a beer flight if you want to try a few before choosing a favorite. It’s a perfect way to enjoy some locally brewed flavors without leaving the airport. The staff is always friendly and efficient, even when the place is busy. They understand travelers are often on a tight schedule and do a great job getting food and drinks out quickly while still being personable. Atwater Brewery at DTW is more than just an airport bar—it’s a great way to enjoy local food and drink in a relaxed setting. If you’re flying through Detroit, it’s absolutely worth a stop. I always leave feeling like I got a little something extra out of my travel day.

ANDREA is a wonderful server and person. I watch her sprint after customers who had left their card at the table before they got on a flight. That is above and beyond. I had the grilled chicken tacos, which hit the spot. The restaurant itself was full but not loud, allowed us to talk at a comfortable. Prices were reasonable for inside the airport and the portions were generous.

Misty was great. She greeted our table promptly with a smile. Our beverage were delivered ice cold and ready for the drinking. We had the Fish & chips and a grilled cheese sandwich. The food came out quickly, as we were in a rush. We had a flight to catch. 10/10 would recommend! ;)

Google
We had the best experience here. It's nice and close to the security checkpoint. The food was absolutely delicious. The service was great as well. We received our food quickly and got moving in a timely manner. Spacious seating area with available options to charge electronics. We started with the Barvarian Pretzel Sticks: 10/10. They were fluffy and warm and delicious. Salted to perfection. The real star was the beer cheese. We got the beer cheese burger, brewers mac and cheese, and an Atwater brat. All the food was perfectly cooked and plated beautifully. The fresh chips on the side were so delicious that I had to take them home. Waitress was super friendly and kept things moving along smoothly. Very attentive to drink needs.

Andrea was an amazing server. My husband ordered fish & chips which was amazing, I ordered the pulled pork sliders. The sliders barely had any meat and was drenched in bbq sauce. Due to the nature of this restaurant being at the airport, I had to eat it quick as I was hungry. Mentioned this to our server and she was nothing but fantastic about handling our situation. Thank you Andrea!

Google
Wow! Unexpected great service and food. I had the burger and my partner had the fish and chips. We had to order the fish twice. So random to find great fish and chips at the airport but it was delicious. Emily was absolutely wonderful. She was sweet, attentive and friendly. Overall she gave us great service.

Yelp
Recently had a lot of time to kill in the airport, so my aunt and I sat down to have some lunch. I never expect much from airport restaurants, given all the variables working against them. Was pleasantly surprised with our meal here! We ordered the Atwater Brat and soft pretzel bites, both were extremely tasty. I would recommend sharing the brat, especially if you have a long day of travel ahead, because it is both heavy and rich. But man, definitely the best thing we ordered! Cheese and bacon jam pair so well with the brat. Very filling as well, even with a half serving. Staff were very nice and attentive.

Yelp
Decent fare for airport food. Their selection of local brews on tap is better than average and a reason to visit. The Beer Cheese Burger was not worth writing about. It's too sweet and I don't know if it was because of the bun, the caramelized onions, or the cheese. It was overcooked and I'd asked for medium rare. However, the fries are awesome. Definitely worth the upgrade. They had a live musician named Spencer. He plays smooth lounge jazz on the guitar, flute, and trumpet. Truly worth a visit if he's there. Don't forget to tip him. My bartender has some helpful suggestions, but I do wish I'd skipped the burger. The guy next to me got the fish and chips and I wish I'd gone that way. Maybe next time.

Yelp
Service was terrible, they had me waiting for a beer for 30 minutes as I watched the staff talk about their personal lives. I was anxious since this is in an airport and my flight time was around the corner. I just think that in airports, timing of service is important as many people are in/out and ready to go. Anyways... I got the strongest beer with an Abv of 9.8 percent and got on my flight nice and boozy.

Yelp
Most delicious Beer Cheese Burger! And the drinks were amazing. Sabrina and Erica did a great job.

Yelp
Came here while visiting with my brothers and was really impressed with the ambiance of what they've done with an old church! Started out with the beer cheese nachos, which were very tasty. My brothers got the brats, which were delicious and HUGE! I had the fish 'n chips, which was a huge portion and very, very good. Washed it all down with the Dirty Blonde, which was very tasty! Definitely check it out. The service was great, the food delicious and the atmosphere fantastic!

Yelp
I remember seeing this place when I had first arrived at the DTW airport and how it looked like it would be a good place to checkout if I had time to kill next time I was there. When it came time for me to fly back out, I had that time to kill and got seated at one of the long tables where they have outlets available for those who want to plug in their laptops, phones, or what have you. There are spaces for solo travelers, couples, and groups. I was able to check some emails, do some writing, and call a friend for a video chat. There was live music and I didn't even know until I heard clapping at the end of one of the songs. The whole time I thought the music playing was from a music stereo - it was really good! Had the fish and chips which came with a side of coleslaw and fries with a glass of one of their beers - I think the name was called the Juicy Detroit IPA? Everything was satisfactory along with the waitstaff. Had a lovely little chat with the friendly lady who sat across from me while I was there, too. The place did fill up over time, but when I first arrived there were less people - I think also less people coming into the airport from security. The Atwater Brewery is one of the first businesses that is right off the right when you walk in from leaving TSA checkpoint.

Yelp
Had about a 3 hour wait so we stopped here for a beer and fries. The service here was top notch, and the server brought over beer samples from the bar. The ambiance great for travelers seeking a respite. The best part was that many of the tables here are equipped with outlets to keep your devices charged. The only downside was that the menu was very outdated, and I hope they fix that soon.

Yelp
Jennifer's service is awesome. Beer is solid, so is the playlist!! If you're in the Evan's terminal be sure to stop by.

Yelp
For an airport eatery, this place is quite good. The food is tasty and there is a nice selection of beers to be had. The service was ok, which is pretty good when it comes to airport locales that tend to be understaffed. We were able to get our orders in and eat without being rushed. If you are in this terminal, definitely stop by if you have the time.

Yelp
Pit stop at the airport before the flight out. Straightforward brewpub with several items on tap from this brewer, as well as a decent food menu. All of their beers are around $8-9, which is very good for an airport restaurant. Had both the "Detroit City Juice" and "Street Artist N.E." IPAs - both very good hazy offerings. For food, split the Season Fries ($6) - a large handful of double fried fries. Not overly greasy or salty, and easily parable with the beers. Place wasn't crowded at all, so got our items very quickly. Good place to chill for a while before your flight

Yelp
Fantastic meal on our way through DTW. My husband had a burger and fries, and oh my gosh, we're still talking about how good those fries were! My Greek salad was also very good! We will definitely hit up Atwater next time we're passing by!

Yelp
Located in the North terminal at Detroits Metropolitan Airport, this is a pleasant addition to the secured area. Airport prices are what they are. Once you get past that, this becomes a convenient, relaxing way to kill time before a flight or opportunity to socialize with those you met on your flight in. This morning was our first visit. While they do offer breakfast and lunch, we just had a couple of drinks and enjoyed a jazz/blues guitar player. A calming event before flying home. Our server was comical and proved to be patient with us. I can't wait for our next visit to the former motor city. 06/22

Yelp
Jennifer and Emily were very attentive and helpful the whole time. Would certainly recommend and return back.

Yelp
upon approaching the bar i was greeted by Jennifer with a smile. Jennifer was very polite and professional to myself as well as the other patrons. i'm already a fan of atwater and this was a very nice experience.

Yelp
As far as Airport restaurants go- Atwater is a great one! Decent prices for great quality, and the service is amazing. Misty was over and beyond- greeted us right away, had a fun and engaging personality, and consistently made sure our experience was being upheld to her standards. I will be returning each time I travel in the area.

Yelp
Great tap selection and delicious food! The bar cheese, cheese burger was fantastic!! Our waitress was helpful and friendly, we enjoyed the experience.

Yelp
Decent meal before the airport. Had the beer cheese burger, ordered medium but looked more well-done. Lettuce and tomato would have been a nice touch, but lacking.

Yelp
Stopped in before my flight to get a small bite. I ordered the wings and had a soft drink. The wings were good sized and meaty. They do not have a lot of choices for sauces but I got the hotter option and it was nice. If I had the chance to stop back I would like to get a burger and beer.

Eric L.

Yelp
Fast & friendly service! Food was decent as well. Good option if at DTW vs. just grab & go.

Yelp
It's likely to be crowded, and the prices aren't the best, but that's part of inflation and being located in an airport. But the beer selection is excellent, it's kept at a good temperature and well poured, there was no flat beer to be found. As for the food, wow. My burger was one of the best I have had in a while. Juicy meat, good quality toppings, soft roll. Fries were ok, but nothing too memorable. And there are ample places to charge a device, always a plus.

Christina D.

Yelp
Jennifer was great! we needed fast service before our flight and she helped us out! Thanks!!

Yelp
Service was great and the food very good. Almost forgot I was in an airport. Fish & Chips were the bartender's recommendation and they were awesome

Kelly B.

Yelp
Love Jennifer at the bar!! She is incredibly friendly and can make a great bloody! Highly recommend stopping here
google avatar

Yelp
Music is unbelievably loud. Even during breakfast a person can hardly hear yourself think. It's really disrespectful to customers. Awful

Jessica P.

Yelp
Over priced with bad service! Average food with attitude. Surely there must be better options

Frank M.

Yelp
Great Jazz/blues music LIVE - great food, great beer, gorgeous servers: makes me wish my flight would be delayed!!
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
Food was good but certainly overpriced. I know it's in an airport, but stale kettle chips and a grilled cheese sandwich sure as hell not worth $15.50.

Katy A.

Yelp
We arrived at North terminal early to avoid holiday travel slowdowns, but had missed dinner and flying on a budget airline meant no in-flight food. So I was glad to try this location of the brewery because we already knew there would be a good variety of filling food and beverages. We were seated right away and the orders came out quickly. There was live Christmas music, which made for a festive start to the vacation.

Amanda M.

Yelp
WOW is all I can say. The burger here was to die for the margaritas were not watered down. The service was great.

Sarah R.

Yelp
Literally the best burger I have ever had, ordered rare, it was juicy and a delicious. I SWEAR it's not just cuz I was delirious from travel-- that burger SLAPPED! Pretzel bites were on point too 10/10

Fay E.

Yelp
Excellent food (cod) and beer (dirty blonde). Best feature is the live entertainment, a musician who plays at least 3 instruments, R&B songs amongst others. Clean. Friendly service. Hostess is slow but waitress made up for it.

Justin L.

Yelp
Beer was flat from the rap. Bartender had bad attitude immediately (suspect man hater and job hater). Don't be in service industry if your attitude sucks. bar smells bad, like stale drink mix. Its 10:40 am and says breakfast until 11 but apparently breakfast is over wuth because the kitchen ran out of eggs even though there is about 5 people here. Very disappointing. Now I see why chicken fil a is much more busier even at this time of day than this joke of a olace. Hite bartenders that actually have a good attitude and i might even look past these things, but the passive agressiveness bad attitude and blaming everyone else for fkat beer and lack of breakfast - juat doesnt fly in servixe induatry. Soend tour hard earned dollars and company dollars elsewhere, thats what ill be doing.
