Been here twice but only reviewing it now when it’s under new management. The place has been given a nice facelift with more seating and the menu has new options as well. I was informed that they would be getting a brand new menu in a couple of weeks. I had Strawberry Fields which is waffles with strawberries and kiwi. The selling point was the guava sauce which was just right and tasted really great! My partner had the chicken and waffles. The chicken cutlet could be better but the sauce was really good! They also serve some mains and sides worth trying. Parking can be a bit of a hassle where you have to drive around a bit.

Google
Definitely not Atypical Waffle anymore. Now it’s Good Measure. The once amazing home made waffles have been replaced with bland and flat waffles. The toppings are mediocre and everything tastes of too much sugar. The atmosphere is cute except for all the flies constantly landing on you and your food. It’s also highly overpriced. Too bad the once amazing institution of Wow Wow Waffles is gone.

Our first visit to San Diego and someone recommended Wow Wow Waffle to us. Super clean, super friendly and we loved the owner and chef always saying PERrrrfect! The food was amazing and we can’t wait to visit again. The location is perfect 🤩 because of the beach being nearby and we got the cutest Wow Wow Waffle drink cup. Thank you for making our San Diego trip one to remember. We will be back!!!

Google
Loved the food. I ordered the Vegetarian Benedict Waffle and the fresh OJ. The Benny sauce paired perfectly with the sweet potato and veggies. The waffle had unique, tasty sweet crisp to it. Everything fresh and hot off the grill. Can't wait to try more waffles. 🧇 😋

Google
Amazing food and drinks! The garden fresh tomorrow grits were incredible. All of the waffle selections are delicious and the sticky rice matcha is my new obsession. Wonderful service and atmosphere. The ladies who run the business are lovely!

Nice assortment of waffles and drinks. Highly recommend it for brunch, the taste is incredible, just wish the portion size matches the price. Overall a great place to eat, specially if you are a waffle lover

Google
I have gone to this restaurant a total of twice and the first time I went it was before the pandemic, it had a different name “Wow wow waffle”. I had such a wonderful experience here that many years later I came back and had such an awesome experience once again. The place is wheelchair accessible. The person on staff was so nice and super friendly as well as welcoming. I had the homemade lemonade, the squirrel jam, the number Seven and chicken nugs & waffles. I really enjoy the eclectic, relaxed vibe as well as the greenery inside. It makes you feel like you aren’t in the middle of the city. Highly recommend for lovers of breakfast both sweet and savory.

I don't know you guys... The food is pretty good not great. It is as expensive as whatever else you'd typically find in the neighborhood but the portions are small. I actually prefer smaller portions to having leftovers but then I'd want to pay less. My boyfriend wanted more food though and I get that. Good coffee, small amount since very recently as it seems to have changed ownership again 🤷🏻‍♀️ I might come back for the brisket waffle but by myself or with someone else who doesn't eat a lot haha. But yeah, I really wanted this place to become my favorite but it hasn't made the cut yet. Wish the new owner has kept the flower latte.

Yelp
Raw banana bread, a reheated frozen chicken patty, and overpriced waffles led our visit to Atypical Waffle to be a disappointing one. I expected an extensive waffle menu given the restaurant's name but had just 6 topped waffles to choose from. We tried 3 and weren't blown away by any (#7, Strawberry Fields, and Chicken & Waffles). The biggest disappointment was the chicken on the Chicken & Waffles ($16). It was described as panko-crusted chicken breast but was definitely a reheated frozen chicken patty. It wasn't crispy or fresh. I was excited for the side of banana bread with guava butter ($6) and anticipated a thick slice of banana bread. We were given a tiny slice of toasted but undercooked banana bread. The guava sauce was tasty but no small slice of banana bread is worth $6, particularly when it is gooey and raw inside. The drinks were okay but nothing to write home about. The waffles were decent but not large enough to be as costly as they are priced. Street parking in North Park on a weekend morning wasn't as bad as I'd expected. This cafe is outdoors and dogs are welcome at the patio seating. I do not plan on returning.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place out. I've seen it on both TikTok and Instagram and a lot of my friends went so it definitely was gaining attention. While I wasn't disappointed, I wasn't blown out of this world with the food. Located in North Park, parking is a challenge depending on what time of day you go. We were there pretty early so I managed to snag street parking right in the front of the place. I can imagine though that parking becomes more of a challenge later into the morning. The place itself was pretty cute. It was all outdoors and very dog friendly. It's tucked away in an alley behind a laundromat so fair warning, it is pretty easy to miss in my opinion. I had issues with service. I saw only one guy working the register and he also was working the drinks as well. So I thought he was working pretty hard and had no complaints about him. There was another girl serving the food and I wasn't sure how much kitchen staff there was, so it was definitely a small ran show. But I could tell that they were all working hard. Food was ok, but not extraordinary. I had the Number 7 (Basically an avocado toast on a waffle). I had no hate to the concept, but I think the goat cheese was a little too overwhelming for me. I was kind of disappointed in the waffle itself though. It was kind of soggy and to me, it didn't seem fresh. My friend had the chicken and waffles and she described the chicken as "It seems like a frozen chicken tender you get from Costco to throw in the air fryer." And I don't disagree with her. To me, it looked kind of sad for chicken and waffles. We did enjoy the matcha though. That surprised us and we thought it was relatively decent. Overall, I don't know if I would actively seek coming out here. I would prefer if Bruxie was still around if I wanted waffles. We could have just caught them on an off day and they had plenty of other stuff on the menu, so maybe those will be better than what I had today.

Yelp
Thank you Brandon and Jill for making me and my friend feel so welcomed into this sweet little place. The entire experience was like a warm hug that brought you endless comfort. The food tasted very homey! They had games in a corner for you to grab and play so we played connect four while we waited for our food and didn't even finish our game by the time our food arrived! :) Thank you for everything! We will most certainly be back the next time we're in SD!

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for such a long time and I finally got a chance to. It is a very cute place that can be easily missed if you don't know it's there. I loved the seating area and the combination of colors that were everywhere. They're dog friendly and have plenty of shade and water available for them. I tried the #7 and the Pork Belly Benedict. While no one in my group found any of it to be particularly amazing, it wasn't necessarily bad. Everything was cooked right, but they both just lacked good flavor as the flavors weren't balanced. The pork belly itself was the best part of that waffle, but the rest was really sweet and there was way too much hollandaise sauce. For the #7, there was way too much goat cheese that it completely overtook the flavor of the entire waffle. The bacon was my favorite part of this waffle as it was perfectly crispy for me.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick waffle but the grits caught my eye and for good reason, they are so freakin' good! The guy who took our order was really friendly and welcoming. Made sure we knew that the menus posted on the walls were outdated and that they had a new one by the register. This spot is super colorful and cute and food came out real quick.

Yelp
Under new management, and it has gone down hill. For years my family has enjoyed waffles on Christmas morning. I will place an order on the phone or online and scoop them up. Well, don't try to use the phone number that is all over the internet... it doesn't work. When I asked why my 15 calls didn't go through my answer was... we do not have a phone. WHAT??? How can a customer not place a togo order on the phone when I use to order 6 waffles to go every year. They took that off of the menu now. So you do not get a discount for ordering in bulk. I ordered 6 plain waffles (see picture), Banana bread, Cheesy Hashbrown Casserole- this was good, Pork Belly Benedict (very fatty- 90% fat on mine, my dog enjoyed it). My cost was $65 for this. My family tradition is broken, very disappointed in the new management. :(

Yelp
The food is always incredible and I love the new seasonal offerings they consistently rotate to keep things exciting. Fast service and friendly staff. A perfect neighborhood spot with the cutest decor. The vibes are always high! They have amazing coffee and delish waffles and sides.

Yelp
Super cool looking place. Loved the art all around. We arrived at 10 am but they stated they ran out of food. Can't review what I didn't try but would love to go back when they do have some food available.

Yelp
Waffles are delicious. Service is quick and lovely. The place is super cute. If anybody knows of the lemonade guy can I get his info please. The lemonade is sooo good. But let's go back to the waffles, they're a must have!

Yummy Y.

Yelp
The waffles weren't crispy at all, and the flavor wasn't quite there. We appreciated the ambiance, but it didn't feel like enough care was put into perfecting their waffles, for a restaurant specializing in waffles.

Yelp
Cute spot with friendly waitstaff. You order from an airstream!! Fruit bowl was delicious and fresh. We had berry waffles with whipped cream. My husband tried the bread pudding said it was a combo of blueberry muffin with bread pudding. Arnold palmer best I've had in SD.

Yelp
Such a fun space to enjoy some great coffee and waffles. Love it! I have been many times and am always happy with the food and service.

Yelp
Fantastic little breakfast/ brunch spot. I am so blown away by the creativity, and flavors of EVERYTHING I've ordered so far Highly recommend you try this place, I know you'll return. Amazing Owner, cooks and atmosphere!!! Super good vibes all around my NEW fave place... Thank you Jess & Jill

Yelp
Got the waffles & c.r.e.a.m. This time around. House made vanilla gold whipped cream, fresh fruit, and powdered sugar on their famous waffle that takes over two days to make! It is filled with belgium parl sugars, and when heated it makes a sweet crisp golden caramely taste to the waffle. Slight chewy factor. And MMMMM so good. The fruit was fresh and crisp. No soggy fruits here! The cream was light, fluffy and not too sweet. It doesn't take away the star of the show which is their waffle. It showcases it! I havent had a waffle from here that i didnt like. Every single one is mouthwatering. I love the sweet waffle.. The savory waffle (the number seven with the avocado, candied bacon, and goat cheese. Ugh so damn good). Their lattes and housemade lemonade is bomb too! Service is great and their little area is super cute with the artwork and different tables and chairs that you can sit at.

Yelp
This used to be a must on my San Diego vacations, new ownership has taken over and it just isn't the same anymore I was so excited to take my boyfriend and we were very disappointed to say the least! Won't be coming back again unfortunately

Yelp
This place is a hidden spot. It has such a fun and unique environment. There are limited choices on the menu, but you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. Great portions and excellent value. Also, the customer service was top-notch. I was really impressed that the staff members remembered our names even after calling out our names to receive the order.

Meagan P.

Yelp
I don't appreciate the business owner's condescending reply to my 1 star review from years ago. I appreciate the offer for a refund, but I don't agree with you trying to justify the poor waffle quality. I can still remember how awful it was 3 years later and this business still has 4.5 stars. I simply don't understand where the hype is coming from but simply wanted to share my opinion that these waffles are NOT good. The latte was forgettable but evidently milk heavy according to my initial review.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Pretty good prices for what you get, but seating is very limited. Crammed behind a laundry mat doesn't give this place a lot of charm. Typical north park parking issues. No real service here so I was stuck wondering around for creamer and napkins. Two waffles both different sizes and different consistency. One small nice and crispy another large and soft. Overall disappointed with this place and won't be back. Way too many other better breakfast option in this area.
google avatar

Yelp
The menu has majorly declined since the new owners took over. Waffle is in the name but they only have 4 waffle options
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy food, good drinks. Nice space for kids and dogs! Quick service! They also have board games available if you choose to hang out for a bit!

Yelp
Came in around brunch time today, we knew we were in for trouble when we walked in and were ignored for almost 10 minutes at the register. (While another girl stood in front of us ) Then a group of three walked past us complaining about how long the food took to get. After that a lady came up to the front and addressed the girl in front of me, turned out she only wanted a to go order. She then turned to us and informed us they had no protein, no bacon, no cheese etc, they could only serve sweet waffles or avo one. The menu was already small Enough and now it has been cut in half. We decided to just leave. Wish I could try the food, but if you don't have food To serve its hard to try a place.
google avatar

Adriana B.

Yelp
I do not understand the reviews. Are they fake? Are they from a previous owner? It was terrible. The location is behind a laundry mat and it's like an outdoor setup so not nice. Now the food was awful. It tasted cold and precooked waffles. They had potential to make a good fresh waffle as the batter wasn't too bad. I ordered a vegetarian benedict. I asked them to poach my egg medium. They either need to buy a poaching pan or learn how to drop an egg in boiling water. The egg yolk was cooked from the bottom and raw whites on top? The fried eggplant was sour tasting. I can't imagine it will survive.

Yelp
waffles & c.r.e.a.m (3.2/5): good waffle but nothing amazing! i'm not sure if they are homemade but they didn't really taste like they were. size of this waffle was smaller than the number seven for some reason, which was weirdly inconsistent. the number seven (3.5/5): interesting waffle, i enjoyed all the different toppings (avocado, brown sugar bacon, goat cheese) but didn't care too much for everything together. this waffle shop is pretty cool, i like the decor around the shop. however, the food was just ok, personally would not return. for the cost, i think the waffles should be bigger.

Yelp
The food is So good! and the place is very cute but low key. I love coffee and I love waffles. So I Love this place. Go.

Yelp
Such a cute spot for brunch!! All of the food was delicious but my favorite was the strawberry fields waffle Service was very friendly and quick too! Highly recommend Atypical
google avatar

Yelp
I can not say enough about how great this place was for an easy breakfast option in North Park! We stayed in an airbnb nearby while visiting SD and ended up coming here two mornings in a row :) Highly highly recommend!!! Atypical Waffle is located right next to a laundromat; you order at the front and there's a plethora of seating options in an outdoor patio area. Andrew served us both days and he was phenomenal. Not only did he give us tips for visiting the zoo, but he even went out of his way to make the squirrel jam waffle work for me when they were out of the jam of the week. All of the waffles we tried here were delicious! The squirrel jam is hands down my favorite thanks to the amazing combo of the ricotta & whipped cream cheese topping paired with the jam of the week (which was strawberry & rhubarb when we visited), and I was still thinking about that waffle even after we left SD. The number seven with avocado and brown sugar bacon was also very good especially if you are looking for a savory option.
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
Great hidden spot in NP if you're a Belgium waffle lover... which who isn't? Decorated very cute and makes the most out of a small space. If it's you're first time going, make sure you pay attention to the entrance or you'll miss it. I ordered a bacon avocado waffle and a nitro brew coffee. Waffle was delicious! Guacamole was seasoned and bacon was crispy with some sort of brown sugar coating. The waffle itself was legit and didn't taste like some premade mix. Nitro brew was a little disappointing and was really an ice coffee. I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew this was what I was getting. Server was nice and offered to refund or replace, but I did need some caffeine and do like ice coffee so I kept it. Definitely want to come back and try the other waffles. Skeletor (last photo attached) also approved of the bacon and would like to try the chicken waffle next!
google avatar

Meaghan R.

Yelp
Cute spot tucked away behind a laundromat. The food is great, waffles are fluffy and have unique topping combinations. The tomato grits were also a star.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
Three phone calls to be told in a curt manner "We are closed " this was at 9am on a Saturday If they had a flood or understaffed the guy could have explained it to me instead of hanging up on me.
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Location: Next to a laundromat in North Park Wait: 45 mins to get the waffle on a Saturday afternoon Parking: street parking What we ordered: (1) Waffles & cream ($7.99): My favorite one! You can't go wrong with berries & whipped cream on a waffle. (2) The number seven ($9.99): The saltiness of the bacon, the creaminess of the goat cheese and avocado goes well with the sweet waffle. (3) Chicken nugs and waffles ($12) Main takeaway: I was happy to find a place that specialized in waffles in SD! You order at the counter and then you seat yourself. The waffles are great! My only gripe is the long wait for the waffles.

Yelp
Made my way back to Atypical Waffle (after my first experience yrs ago) because I needed a liege waffe stat. I absolutely love the casual backyard vibe of this local breakfast/brunch spot. The available self-seating is creative in that it seems like everything has been upcycled and there are unique types of tables and chairs. This makes for a fun experience because there is so much to observe and see while enjoying your waffle. I went with the original waffle ($4.99) and added strawberries ($2.00) and kraft syrup. Simple and to the point. The waffle was dense, doughy, and delicious. My waffle was gone in 3.1 minutes. I washed it down with an iced almond milk latte. The staff was friendly, helpful, and speedy. Loved my experience and can't wait to be back!

Swim S.

Yelp
Great spot, delicious food. I loved the grits and tomatoes, it was so creamy and the perfectly ripe tomatoes were a great addition to cut the richness. Bonus throwback comfort food by serving it in a red plastic bowl reminiscent of childhood. The sesame iced matcha was refreshing, not too sweet. I would gladly return

Ed B.

Yelp
Great casual spot for waffles and coffee. Tucked in next to the laundromat, might miss it! Super friendly staff. Will be coming back.

Jane P.

Yelp
Amazing food and drinks! The garden fresh tomorrow grits were incredible. All of the waffle selections are delicious and the sticky rice matcha is my new obsession. Wonderful service and atmosphere!

Rosa L.

Yelp
My bestie Gen introduced me to this super cool little Gem in North Park. It's definitely a first for me. I tried new things and explored my palate. I was NOT disappointed. I've always taught my daughter to try new things before saying she didn't like something. Well, I am following that myself today. The ladies here, Jill and Jess, were super sweet and very welcoming. Thank you for a great experience. I feel so fancy eating here but yet super chill and laid back at the same time.
google avatar

Calvin L.

Yelp
Blink and you'll miss it - a real hole in the wall breakfast spot! Tucked away just behind a laundromat, you'll find some of the best waffles ever here. The waffles are so good just by themselves (no syrup needed!) you can't go wrong, no matter what you order. It has a super cool, backyard kind of feel to it. Different types of seats and tables, mostly shaded, and cool art all over - even the bathroom is cool here! What better way to start your morning than with good vibes and better waffles?
google avatar

Sam D.

Yelp
Was ok, I had the chicken and waffles, and a salted caramel latte. The coffee was tasty but the food was not remarkable and definitely not worth the money The texture of the chicken nuggets wasn't the greatest, they weren't that crispy and kind of reminded me of frozen nuggets you'd get from the grocery store (but with seasoning on them lol). Same with the waffle, I think that they might have frozen food that's reheated rather than freshly made. It wasn't bad per se, but reminds me of something I would make at home in the air fryer. My best part of the meal was the sauce, eating the spicy aioli and the maple syrup together was good. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend
google avatar

Bryce S.

Yelp
Loved the food and drinks. Place was recently remodeled and they have added some delicious options! The new brunch spot for sure
google avatar

Lindell N.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times. Although lately it feels like each visit has fallen short of what it used to be. There's plenty of flies in the back seating area...something is attracting them. ‍ They ran out bacon...for a very simple menu, how do you run out of bacon? How do you not have a bacon? Does someone not want to get or deliver bacon? My fork bent. What else can I say about that? The front desk girl seems...lethargic and doesn't really care. Another co-worker asked her about the cups for the coffee and she brushed him off like meh. I'm not sure what happened to my dusty brown drink but I think we're past the cinnamon challenge. The waffles came out cold, that's a first and pretty disappointing. Shit happens and hopefully it doesn't last long.
google avatar

Renata S.

Yelp
The menu in the place is completely different from what is on the website and is pretty small. I ordered an acai bowl and strawberry sweet cream matcha. The acai bowl was bland and watery and tasted like just bananas. The matcha tasted like strawberry milk and not like matcha at all. However, I tried the #7 waffle and it was delicious. Service was a little slow as well. Would not recommend this place if you want a good breakfast.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
I love waffles so I was really excited reading all of the great reviews. Sadly, our experience was really disappointing and quite the opposite. Maybe it was an off day or we came at a bad time (12:00 on Saturday). Our order was the number 7 and the fresh and light waffle. There were 3 orders before us. After 40 min we finally got our food. Both waffles were cold and looked nothing like other pictures. The bacon was stringy and resembled reheated McDonald's bacon. The waffles tasted like cardboard. It's sad that after such a long wait the quality was so terrible. In the past when I've had a bad meal I just move on with my day. This exceptionally bad meal drove me to ordering an appetizer next door just to wash the experience away.

Yelp
A hole in the wall! Literally smacked in between two restaurants and it seemingly looked like an alley way. There's a sign above the entrance, but it's easy to miss! They literally only have waffles, lol. Savory & sweet waffles too! They had their standard menu, a seasonal menu and your standard drink items. The area is very tiny & limited seating. The seating area is filled with different types of chairs, such as benches, theater seats and table counters! Made for a very cute feel! Now the food! The waffles itself was very crispy outside and soft inside. A bit small for the price, so my friends and I ended up getting two waffles each. Each waffle is stuffed on top which made for a delightful brunch!
google avatar

Cooper W.

Yelp
Literally everything about this "Hole in the Wall" is incredible! The food, the service, atmosphere and overall experience was perfect! I got my laundry done in the morning and waffles afterwards with my fiancé and we'll definitely be back! The chicken nugs and waffles are so savory and delicious, and the waffles and cream is so sweet! The greatest waffles i've ever had! Oh and don't sleep on the coffee!!!! It's perfect and i mean that!!

Yelp
We decided to come here for a Saturday morning brunch. Initially had trouble finding parking since there is only street parking, but luckily someone left a spot in front on our second drive by. Environment: This place is pretty much the definition of hole-in-the-wall, but there's a sign up front that points you towards the entrance. You order and pay up front, then find your own seating. I definitely like the vibe and set-up of the seating, which is outdoor and consists of picnic tables and even a cool fire pit. Unfortunately, the day we went, it was drizzling, so many of the tables and chairs were wet. We again got lucky with someone leaving just as our orders arrived. Service: A staff member came to check on us as we ate, to ask if there was anything we needed, e.g. napkins, water, etc. They were very friendly! Food: The Seven M3 - 3/5 - The fillings (bacon, avocado, goat cheese) were savory and delicious, but the waffle itself was not warm and not as crunchy as we had hoped. Sqirl Jam - 4/5 - I really enjoyed the sweet combination of waffle, ricotta cheese, and jam. **We actually ended up combining the savory Seven M3 with the cheese+jam of the sqirl waffle. Drinks: Sea Salt Caramel Latte - 5/5 - Good blend of sweet and salty! Mint Tea Latte - 2/5 - It felt like there was too much milk. Even after steeping for awhile, the mint tea taste was still very faint.

Yelp
The food was rrrrreeeaaaalllyyy good. The service was very patient with my indecisiveness. The ambiance was very quaint. Overall really good! Lastly, the laundry place was next door. Within one hour, I can eat breakfast, do two down comforters, bed sheets and a blanket!!!! This is really better instead of dragging the whole day doing laundry at home.

Yelp
Oh sh*t, I haven't reviewed Atypical Waffle yet?! It's probably because of the sign in the bathroom telling you what they think about your Yelp reviews. ;-) Whatever, this is one of my favorite places in North Park so I've gotta give em' their five stars. Service can be a little slower, it's clearly a small operation and a true local business. The menu is limited, which is perfect for someone indecisive like myself. Do you want sweet or savory? Coffee or lemonade? If you visit on the weekends sometimes they have a 90's brunch pop up for additional options. Place your order then kick back and relax. Like I said, it can take a few extra minutes. Everything is made to order. Their patio is perfect for lounging. It feels like a "vintage junkyard oasis" Okay, I know calling it a junkyard may not sound flattering, but I added oasis, it's an atypical vibe okay. Yes, there are often flies. You're outside with food surrounded by other businesses outside with food. You can tell they're taking efforts to minimize their presence. The waffles are great. Obviously. The number seven is my go to. It's one of the places I send visiting friends, because it feels like something you can't get somewhere else. Perfect for North Park's energy, I look forward to my next visit.
google avatar

Katie P.

Yelp
This place was great - super awesome atmosphere with lots of cool art and things to look at (the definition of eclectic for sure). The food was good, I really enjoyed my number seven and definitely could have had another waffle if I wasn't strapped for time. A few notes - the seating is basically all our doors so bundle up if you're visiting on a cold day. It also takes a bit to get your order so factor time into your day for that. I will definitely be back to try other waffles!

Yelp
It was our last morning in San Diego and we knew we wanted to check out Balboa Park so we found Atypical Waffle not too far away. Super unique vibe with great service! I tried the squirrel jam (waffle with whipped cream/ricotta and the jam of the week) and my husband got The Number Seven (waffle topped with avocado, goat cheese, and bacon). Both were fantastic in their own way so we had to share to each get a savory and sweet option. I also got their homemade lemonade and I probably could have drank 5 of them... so good!
