"Food lovers come galloping to the Cheval Noir – the Black Horse! Behind the façade of this 18C half-timbered house, a team of two brothers works with fine ingredients to create traditional cuisine that is served in a stylish, bourgeois interior." - Michelin Inspector

Very polite service, pleasant ambiente and an amazing food. Big portions and very well prepared meat. We had slowly cooked veal, different steaks (filet, entrecôte) and everything was done perfectly. Very soft meat. The prices are more than fair. For sure we are visiting again!

Food was really nice! Service was really French: arrogant waiter (the one with a lot of energy) making fun of customers in his own language. Not really nice when it feels like someone is taking the piss out of you when you pay 25 euros for a piece of meat (which was nice though). Unkind regards from The Netherlands

Very good and friendly service, excellent food with big portions. We stayed in the apartment next door on holiday and since we have a little baby who was sleeping, we couldn’t eat out. The owner was so friendly to offer to serve us on our own terrace! We had the black angus entrecote and onglet de voeuf, both were exquisite. Wonderful experience, highly recommended!

Lovely restaurant, amazing food and brilliant service. Kids had massive burgers which they said were the best ever. I can highly recommend the scampi in curry with rum. Absolutely wonderful.

Google
Mediocre experience. Service was okay, the mind were okay, price was slightly above what would be expected for the quality. We also did not expect that the "mixed salad" (which listed cheese and sausages as part of it) would consist of nothing but that -- greens only for decoration...

Tasty, fresh and clean, generous portions. Salad bar is somewhat limited in choice, but very good salads. Typical traditional Alsacian style.

Changement de propriétaire. Nouveau cadre lumineux !

Yelp
Like many Americans, I have ancestors from Alsace who left when war broke out in 1872. After many hours of work on the family tree, I found that they are from Herrlisheim. Naturally, I was in the area recently, I couldn't resist a visit and a stop for dinner! Au Cheval Noir is a characteristic "Winstub", or a cozy restaurant serving Alsatian fare. We arrived right at the start of the dining hour and the place quickly filled up! The staff is so warm and welcoming, and after perusing the menu and the daily specials, we had quickly decided in what we wanted. All of us decided on the Prix Fixe menu, which had 3 courses (appetizer, entree, dessert). I started with Escargots, and they were just as delicious as I had expected. It's hard to go wrong with butter, garlic, and herbs on anything! My entree was the beef filet entree, which was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. I chose a cheese plate instead of the dessert (forgot to photograph), and I honestly wish I had sprung for the sweets instead. My husband got it and the portions and variety were so tempting looking. I don't know when I'll be back in Herrlisheim, but I hope that I'll be able to return to Au Cheval Noir at some point!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and it was very busy with locals. Very good menu for the entire group. We had veal cordon blue, duck, and a hamburger. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Great service, too
