Like many Americans, I have ancestors from Alsace who left when war broke out in 1872. After many hours of work on the family tree, I found that they are from Herrlisheim. Naturally, I was in the area recently, I couldn't resist a visit and a stop for dinner!
Au Cheval Noir is a characteristic "Winstub", or a cozy restaurant serving Alsatian fare. We arrived right at the start of the dining hour and the place quickly filled up!
The staff is so warm and welcoming, and after perusing the menu and the daily specials, we had quickly decided in what we wanted. All of us decided on the Prix Fixe menu, which had 3 courses (appetizer, entree, dessert).
I started with Escargots, and they were just as delicious as I had expected. It's hard to go wrong with butter, garlic, and herbs on anything! My entree was the beef filet entree, which was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. I chose a cheese plate instead of the dessert (forgot to photograph), and I honestly wish I had sprung for the sweets instead. My husband got it and the portions and variety were so tempting looking.
I don't know when I'll be back in Herrlisheim, but I hope that I'll be able to return to Au Cheval Noir at some point!
