"Au Coin des Bons Enfants holds an important place in Maastricht's culinary history having received its first MICHELIN Star back in 1957. Driven by youthful energy, Timo Reichelt and sommelier Lino de Vrede are now writing a new chapter that pays all due respect to the past, maintaining the establishment's elegant and romantic ambience, including a fabulous secluded terrace. Chef Reichelt's cooking puts the produce centre stage. His style is rather classic, enhanced by his knack for drawing the very best out of quality ingredients and his talent for spectacular sauces. The deep flavour of a beurre blanc enriched with icewine, for example, perfectly ties together pan-seared North Sea turbot and a succulent cut of Livar pork. Or he pan-fries yearling venison the meat to a perfect medium-rare and finishes it with a glossy, rich sauce grand veneur and the sweet, vibrant tang of redcurrants. This is indulgent traditional fare prepared by a young chef with a sound grasp of flavours. The finesse of the dishes is accentuated by the wines. The sommelier delights in sharing his passion for Pinot Noir and wines from the Old World, which are also available by the glass." - Michelin Inspector

Au Coin des Bons Enfants, Maastricht » Visited: Sept 2025 » Total score: 4.7/5 – very good » In a nutshell: The gourmet restaurant fully met my very high expectations. I thought the value for money was outstanding. I will most likely visit “Au Coin” again in the future. 1|132|76 ===== My ratings for this gourmet restaurant in detail: ●● Service – 4.8/5 – very good: ● Hospitality, friendliness, obligingness, etc.: 4.8/5 ● Atmosphere, temper, facilitation, etc.: 4.8/5 ● Comment: A young and ambitious team in a good mood. The chef himself welcomes you by explaining his menu and à la carte offerings. ●● Food – 4.8/5 – very good: ● Flavors (range, depth, composition, harmony/balance, etc.): 4.8/5 ● Level (thoroughness, craftsmanship, originality, exclusivity, variety of impressions, consistency/diversity, etc.): 4.9/5 ● Choices: 4.8/5 ● Comment: Overall, I really enjoyed the food. I would describe the underlying style as classic and the interpretations as relatively modern and relatively ambitious. I would particularly like to highlight an intermediate course with goose liver and another intermediate course with sea bass, both of which I found outstanding. ●● Beverages, mainly the wines – 4.8/5 – very good: ● Taste (depth/range, length, complexity, balance, accessibility, elegance, intensity/subtlety, etc.): 4.8/5 ● Level (variety/novelty of impressions, consistency/diversity, exclusivity, etc.): 4.8/5 ● Did the beverages (mainly the wines) match the dishes?: 4.9/5 ● Choices: 4.2/5 ● Comment: I also really liked the wines. In my opinion, they were varied and all accessible, as well as elegant in some cases - but none of them were boring or kitschy. ●● Presentation of the food – 4.3/5 – good: ● Textures and (differences in) temperatures: 4.7/5 ● Colors and decorations: 3.4/5 ● Timing and sequencing as well as sizes of portions: 3.5/5 ● Special effects (positionings, DIY-effects, sculptural or thematic elements, surprises, color and motion effects, fake effects, olfactory effects, fog or smoke effects, etc.): 4.4/5 ● Procedures at and around the table (attunements and explanations, elements added/changed, service and staffing intensity, involvement of kitchen team, orchestrated dish presentations, preparations and dishes (partially) built up at the table, etc.): 4.7/5 ● Comment: I thought the tableside procedures were very good: The team always explained the dishes well and in many cases added one or two components at the table. One of the amuses was even built at the table. However, I didn't like the timing very much because there were several fairly long pauses. That's still better than things going too fast, but it bothered me nonetheless. ●● Presentation of beverages, mainly the wines – 4.7/5 – very good: ● Procedures at and around the table (explanations and attunements, etc.): 4.8/5 ● Quantities poured as well as timing in relation to the dishes: 4.5/5 ●● Premises and location – 4.5/5 – good to very good: ● Accessibility, surroundings and - as applicable - the view: 4.5/5 ● How did I like the room or - as applicable - outdoor area’s style, decor and atmosphere?: 4.7/5 ● Well-being (space, privacy, temperature, ventilation/odors, lighting, soundscape, sanitary facilities, etc.): 4.4/5 ● Comment: I liked the style and decor of the dining room. However, the room is obviously clairaudient. The sounds of guests' conversations were always quite loud and sometimes swelled to a remarkable volume. ●● Price – 4.8/5 – very good: ● Price-performance ratio for food: 4.9/5 ● Price-performance ratio for wines and other beverages: 4.9/5 ● Price transparency and correspondence of the expected to the actual price (simple, complete and unambiguous price information on the restaurant's website and in the menu, etc.): 4.4/5

The food was good and tasty. The chef likes to use peers🍐 in to the dishes. Specially Nashi peer from Japan. One dish a bit too sweet. The Kingcrab it looks like a dessert which is nice but tastes also very sweet with peer confiture. presentation was good all looks very nice. Good thing is they leave extra sauce on the table sometimes you just want to have some extra with the dishes. Pace of the food was good not too slow and not too fast. Only olive oil or salted butter and only one type of bread other restaurants offer more options maybe something to consider like sour dough bread and salted butter with herbs. Service: Forgot to explain dishes one time, forget to clean table from bread crumbs. Didn’t offer more bread Bumping in to one of the guests while pouring wine, serve not start with ladies first. Need to ask a few times to refill water. Maybe understaffed ? Just need some improvement. What we like was the chef comes to every table for a chat ++++ so actually 4 stars but one extra for the chef who speaks fluent German. Atmosphere was nice had a nice round table in the corner near the window everything was neat and already have a small couch for the bags. Table everything all was good. In overall price quality it’s not expensive we had a 6 course menu for 140 eu other restaurants would be 190+ the restaurant is located in city centre which is very nice for shopping and sight seeing but 6 course incl amuse bread and cheeses. We stayed 5 hours was a pleasant experience at Au Coin.

Yelp
Au Coin des Bons Enfants Is in my knowledge and experience it is the best restaurant in Maastricht. It has to be. It is very well known in Maastricht for good ambience and delicious food. and for their one Michelin star which they won for their good food. This restaurant is pretty much unique is all aspects. It is nestled in the old city just a hop and skip from the main market squares. The restaurant from the outside looks like an old farm house but inside is a hidden gem. The atmosphere is very French, modern, and fresh, it feels like a villa in the French countryside, I guess it has to do that they have an open terrace which is covered with grape vines all along the roof and a charming modern fountain giving it a very relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is pretty amazing and hosts local artist's paintings which you can buy. The service is very personal. The hostess and waitress tends to your every need, we sat of a party of 4 outside in terrace which was lovely. We already had a 4 course meal booked as it was the night of the open air concert Andre rieu. I forgot to tell them I didnt eat fish or shell fish and they quickly solved that, 4 course meal felt like a 9 course as between every course came a little welcome and treat from the kitchen. Each course came with a different selection of wines to compliment the dish. I was completely full after the 2nd course. After dessert we though yeah we made it but with coffee and tea came a selection of miniature cakes and then came a layout of home made chocolate truffles which was just too good to leave behind. The price is pretty pricey, I would say top end for Maastricht. But for atmosphere, evening and food it is simply a great deal. The evening was really great. The hostess and staff I have to say are really friendly, they come and chat to you and make sure everything is up to standards and that not only are you enjoying your meal but also the whole experience. The chef also comes out and makes sure you enjoying your meal. I personally and my guests had a wonderful evening, a really good choice and I recommend that if your either looking for a night out in Maastricht or something really unique to experience in culinary than I would highly recommend you enjoy an evening at au coin des bons Enfants.

Yelp
This is one of the best restaurants in the town. Though it's not star-rated anymore, the food is still amazing and the setting is very nice. Highly recommended, if you don't want to spend a fortune.
