Au Crocodile

"The stuffed crocodile in the window, a souvenir brought back from Egypt by a Napoleonic soldier, underlines the historic character of this iconic Strasbourg establishment, which boasted 3 stars under chef Émile Jung. Following a top to toe refurbishment that has preserved the spirit of the venue, it shines brightly on the culinary scene of Strasbourg. Chef Romain Brillat, former second of Gilles Goujon and a distant relative of Brillat-Savarin, the famous French gourmet, has achieved a balance between classicism and sophistication. Examples include his original take on scallops (ravioli and cream of the trimmings) with squash, or Dover sole with buddha’s hand, root vegetables and shellfish." - Michelin Inspector

Edited after education and feedback: Michelin 1 Star approaching the experience of a 2 star. The food is forgettable. It's well crafted, but not expressive. High quality products, but nothing you want to revisit. You might even just want McDonald's afterward. And no chocolates or gift to finish. (even if it's just the printed menu, candy or something used in the food to remember them by). Wine list is decent, but prices are near 3-4x retail for bottles, and the by the glass menu is very poor (only 1 crand cru). They are pushy to buy wine - to the point it's obvious they need to because they don't naturally sell enough. Their confirmation of this tells me they would benefit from restructuring their wine menu. There are many affordable and excellent Alsacian wines that would _greatly_ enhance the diner's experience AND net more profit. I.e. marvel deiss Pinot noir is around €50. I would pay €125 and probably order a second bottle. Pierre Frick costs half that, but could charge the same. Albert Seltz, Boeckel, Karcher grand crus are very affordable and excellent quality. By improving quality and not ripping people off of the markup, diners will buy more. You'll actually make more money! (And have happier diners). I, for example, refused to pay over 3x retail for wine and chose water instead. The dining room is lovely, but the servers' shirts are 'nude' and the same color as the carpet, so everything blends in and it's very Eyes Wide Shut.

This place is overpriced and overrated. We were there for Christmas lunch and gosh they ripped us of. A pour of champagne was charged 20 euros. Three slices of truffle was 25 euros. I have been to twenty or so Michelin star places across four continents and none come close to the price gouging of this place.😱😱😱 Overall in France Michelin Star is not reliable and highly biased. Some of the dishes were great and some were quite awful. Also the service is good but some of the dishes were served in chipped utensils. :/ Coming to food, the chef lacks balance or I have a poor palate. The key lime with the fish sent a shock to my bones. The olive oil on the ice cream was unnecessary. I have not seen someone ruining a great caviar with strange wrap around like this place before. 😫 The lobster and the pastry with the poultry dish were memorable . The small bites were good too.

A great dining experience for us and the food highlight of our Alsace trip. Everything from start to finish was worthy of its fine dining Michelin rating. We opted for the tasting menu that included all dishes on the a la carte menu. Every dish tasted wonderful with portions being perfect. Flawless service enhanced the evening. Don't miss this one!

We booked it here because no other restaurants were available and this is the only place that is free for us and it’s the best decision we have ever made. From the beginning you enter, you receive very warmest and the most politeness of the welcomes from the staffs. We were seated and the upper floor. You feel that it’s luxurious but still cozy and won’t make you feel uncomfortable. They started serving you the warm towel and then serve us an appetizer which good but some of them are quite strong taste. After that, we ordered the chef menu which include 6 dish in total but at the end you will receive more. We were quite worried that we might not be full but due to they were taking time serving each small dish then we felt really full after leaving the restaurant. Each time they serve the dish, they will explain what are they and what products are they from. We really like the idea of using the local products to made each dish. We enjoy every moment we were there from food to services. Really worth for your experiences.

An incredibly sophisticated yet still cozy place. Food was an absolute delight. Our server also really knew his wines! To top off our fabulous evening we even got to peak into an original Michelin guide book from 1968.

Went for the degustation menu. It was amazing! The pre-dessert was a highlight! Perfect palate cleanser.

Amazing food, great flavours and good selection on the menu. Presented beautifully. Great wine recommendations from the waiter who paired the wines depending on what we had picked. The wild boar was delicious!

I had a great visit at Au Crocodile. Food and drink were spectacular. Setting was nice and intimate so perfect for a date. Sommelier is very accommodating, if you do a wine pairing you have the option to choose how many wines to pair so if you only want a couple glasses you can or if you want a new wine for each dish you can.

Yelp
When you're in Germany and life hands you a week of 12-14 hour days planning an event that then gets canceled at the last-minute, you take yourself to Strasbourg. And when your walking tour guide tells you a fun story about a Michelin-starred restaurant and it's interesting name, you decide to take yourself there. I haven't been to a Michelin-starred restaurant in a very long time and I have never been to one alone, but it was still a lovely experience. The staff was very attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. The food was inventive and enjoyable, though I admit I had a hard time understanding the waitstaff sometimes, so I wasn't always sure what I was eating, but luckily I'm willing to eat anything. I had the discovery menu (appetizer, fish, entree, dessert), 3-course wine pairing, coffee, and the restaurant's "extras" which included some very tasty amuse bouche at the beginning, small desserts with the coffee, and even a cookie to take a home. I did not order from the cheese cart, but it was fun to watch it wheeled out for others. For a Michelin restaurant, I found it very reasonably priced and accessible, though I'm not sure I can say I was completely blown away by the food (wine was fantastic, though). But I did see the crocodile! Which is where the restaurant gets it's name: in the 1800s a sailor came back from Egypt with a stuffed crocodile and had the bright idea to use it as a marketing (who wouldn't want to see a stuffed crocodile?!?)

Yelp
Such a beautiful restaurant! Amazingly friendly service! And of course delicious food! We were in town for the Christmas market, so it was fun to take a break from being outside and eating mostly from food vendors. We came in for lunch and went with the market menu they were offering. We also ended up adding a cheese course, because when in France! Can't say no to cheese! I don't know if it's the primacy effect, but I loved the first course. It was like a little egg soup dish. So warm and hearty, it was just comforting. Everything else was good too, but the cheese was a major highlight for me. The waiter selected a sampling of cheeses for us from a huge cheese cart. It was fun to watch and see all the cheeses on display.

Yelp
The only Michelin-starred restaurant I've ever visited that actually had a high chair for the under-three guests. Guess who ended up next to the under-three guests. At least, they weren't screaming. But otherwise, the atmosphere was pleasant, service excellent and I was very pleased with the food, especially the John Dory and the veal sweetbreads, which I have had bad experiences with in the past. I shall have to return soon. 2021 09 24. M1.

Yelp
We decided on this place for Christmas Eve and I am so glad we did. First off, the appearance outside the restaurant was decorated beautifully, and when you enter, you're greeted pleasantly. We had a table in the upstairs room, where they presented us with postcards on mini easels signed by the staff in the back. We decided on the Chef's menu, but I noted that I didn't eat seafood, so my family got the seafood options (fish, etc) while I had meat options. The staff was great, offering just the right suggestions for wine pairings so definitely trust them when it comes to that. It was truly a wonderful experience, and I am so happy to have experienced the food in this kind of setting.

Yelp
Omg this place is unbelievable. Definitely try it. 1 Michelin star so that should tell you it's amazing! The flavor and the quality of food is amazing! Do try the chefs tasting menu. You will not be disappointed!!!!

Yelp
Had a lovely dinner at Au Crocodile. The service was exactly as you would expect, very professional and everything done perfectly. I had the four course menu and what really stood out was all the additional courses. Realised about one hour into the meal still had not been served the first course but not due to slow service, due to multiple amuse bouche. Some were awesome, some not as much (and differed by family member) but made for a pleasant experience. My one slight annoyance was we had asked if a vegetarian would have issues, were assured by email that she would not, also told by the waitress it was not an issue when we were seated but my daughter was still given the regular menu and asked several times if she at least ate fish; which made her feel quite uncomfortable (though her vegetarian dishes were quite good and she had no complaints on the food) While the duck pate is one of the signature dishes, I found the two mains the standouts. A fish dish in a wonderful foamy sauce and venison fillet carved at the table. One of the nicest touches was a sweets trolley at the end of the night. Although we were too full to fully enjoy, brings a smile to anyone's face, from 10 to 90. Good experience.

Yelp
Incroyable. From the moment we walked in for a lunch, we were welcomed and made comfortable. The female maitre d' was kind, translating French into English for my wife. The setting was beautiful, a gorgeous room with a 19th century tableau that a waiter explained. Amuses bouches were delightful and whimsical, the food all delicious and à pointe. The pace of the meal was perfect. Wine list, as typical, was a bit pricy. We had a 2014 Ramonet Clos du Cailleret served too cold which seems to be the mode for whites these days and it took 90 minutes to open up. More wines by the glass including champagne would be nice. They were kind to allow me to do a 4 course menu while my wife ordered à la carte, which was appreciated and unusual--usually the entire table must be in sync. Food was fresh and complex, all in sync, maybe a bit salty for the main course of veau du Limousin with fresh girole mushrooms, but that is common in restaurants. My wife loved her asparagus and her chicken main. My poached rhubarb and fromage blanc dessert was excellent. It was a wonderful experience; they are certainly trying hard for the second star. We would love to return.

Yelp
Absolutely one of my best dining experiences during my Europe travels and worthy of more than the 1 Michelin rated star but I understand the process, given it changed ownership. After catching the train to Strasbourg from Paris, we spent the morning hours exploring the charming little town and taking lots of photos, but of course. Upon arrival, I felt totally under dressed given the clientele that was dining but there was nothing I could do. I just made sure to tuck my Superga sneakers under the table from sight. We went with the smaller version of the tasting menu, which was around $80 per person. We started off with an amuse bouche, appetizer, large selection of amazing french bread, entree, dessert, cheese cart, and the final wedge to my gut, the candy cart stocked with whimsical and beautiful creations. I selected the chicken and the flavors and plating were absolutely exquisite. I'm irritated because I took my new camera with me and proceeded to take several shots on the wrong setting so the photos came out black. It wasn't until halfway through the meal I noticed the blank photos. So, so sad. The Finger Citron dessert was light, rich, and everything held in check by the cool lemon sorbet-like layer. The other dessert choice was the pomme and what a feast for the eyes! A round circle of 9 beautiful green dessert rounds in the shape of mini green apples. The following cheese and candy carts were exquisite. Fabulous service, attentive staff, beautiful plating....they deserve their 3 Michelin stars back please. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

Yelp
First of all, it is to be noted that this venue does not belong to Emile Jung anymore as this renowned chef sold it to Philippe Bohrer upon retirement. Phillippe Bohrer is also a distinguished chef, known for his restaurant "A La Ville De Lyon" in the famous city of Rouffach, Alsace, home of a no-less famous Psychiatric Hospital. As far as the setting goes, we were happily surprised by the remodeling of the place which used to look a bit out-dated. It now boasts a very cozy setting, that melts classic and contemporary traits with elegance. The food was no disappointment either as everything we had was delightful and subtle to the palate and beautiful for the eyes to behold. We chose their "Menu D'Agrément" and replaced the sweetbreads (we're unfortunately not fans of this delicacy) with a beef tenderloin. We did not have cocktails before dinner as we opted for our favorite option drinkwise: a bottle of champagne followed by a bottle of red wine. As I spotted on their wine list that the price of Dom Perignon 2000 champagne was quite reasonable (for such a bottle), we decided to splurge and went ahead and ordered a bottle. In my book, you can not go wrong with this choice and I still stand by it. The delicate flavors of this champagne were a perfect companion for the first half of the menu. Our gustative journey started with a chestnut veloute, followed by lobster, frog legs, scallops, and truffles. It was, at this point, time to order red wine and we opted for a bottle of Chateau Beaucastel 2005, a Chateauneuf-du-pape from the French Rhone valley. This choice made us enjoy even more the following beef tenderloin, cheese, and finally desserts. The hedonist in me, although absent from this blog for quite a while, just loved it. Au Crocodile gained a Michelin star in March as they had to start from scratch after the property changed owner. Remember that the maximum Michelin (the famous fine food red guide) stars a restaurant can get in France is 3 and there aren't many of them. Having 3 Michelin Stars is the holy grail of gastronomy in France. Au Crocodile used to have 3. I believe that what we experienced last night deserves no less than 2! If you're in Strasbourg and want to try Fine Dining in France, it's a no brainer, just make a reservation there!

Yelp
A great place if you are looking for a high end dining experience. The restaurant is an institution in Strasbourg, and went to having 3 Michelin stars to currently 1 (but under a new chef). The service is very good - very attentive but not too obsequious either. I recommend the tasting menu if you can afford it. For $140 you get 10 different dishes, including among others pan seared foie gras with roasted watermelon, a lobster celery tart, lamb, a cheese plate, a chocolate finger (a pastry that reconstructs the Cadbury finger cookie), an apricot tart with a saffron granite. We went there for my parents 30th wedding anniversary, and the restaurant offered us a cake, and kindly offered us to take it home (very uncommon in France) as we were not particularly hungry anymore after the 10 dishes... Anyway, if you have the money and the time, go for it! A great typical French upscale dining experience
