The Best Hot Chocolates in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"True decadence is an entire menu devoted to hot chocolate. Varying from the rich and creamy L’Ecuador (55% cocoa, striking a balance between milk and dark chocolate) to the extravagant La Babette (with cinnamon and ginger), there’s something for all manner of sweet tooths here. Plus, an excellent array of pastries makes it a great cozy nook on a fall day." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Google
Au Festin de Babette offers a charming French-inspired brunch experience that feels like a little escape to Paris. The hot chocolate was definitely the highlight. It was rich, creamy, and with a variety that makes it hard to choose just one. My eggs Benedict with smoked salmon was good, and I especially enjoyed trying gratin dauphinois for the first time. All the ingredients tasted fresh and authentic. I especially enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, quirky wall posters, and thoughtful French decor. Despite the prices feeling a bit high for some of the portions, I would definitely return! Next time, I plan on trying their crepes 😊

We went to Au Festin de Babette for brunch on a Sunday, and it was such a lovely experience from start to finish. My friend had called ahead to reserve a table for two — definitely a good idea, as the place is quite popular. The location is fantastic, right in the heart of the Plateau. The ambiance is cozy and charming, and the service was genuinely warm and attentive. We both ordered the St-Denis brunch plate — a generous and beautifully presented dish with a waffle, poached egg, salad, gratin dauphinois, and a seasonal side (we had fresh fruit). It also came with a delicious chocolate mousse for dessert. Everything was tasty, but the gratin dauphinois was the star of the show! Partway through, a friend of ours called after finishing a workout — she was starving and wanted to join us. The staff was incredibly accommodating and quickly arranged for us to move to a table for three. They welcomed her with a smile and served her promptly, which we really appreciated. We ended up staying and chatting for almost three hours, and at no point did we feel rushed or unwelcome. That kind of relaxed, gracious service is rare and made our brunch all the more enjoyable. Thank you to the team at Festin de Babette — we’ll definitely be back soon!👌🏼

Google
Incredible food! Highly suggest the 'Drolet' plate, comes with a lot of variety - even chocolate mousse to quench the sweet tooth and make you not feel bad about not ordering a pancake !

Google
Kind and attentive staff. High quality dark hot chocolate, several options up to 85% (very high quantity of chocolate). Gratin daupinois is superb. Worth every buttery calorie. Savory crepe forestierre/mushrooms filled with mushrooms, not skimpy. Chocolate waffle also excellent.

Google
The food was great and the portions were generous. The pancakes and chocolate mousse got especially rave reviews. The tables were very close together and the room was loud, but it was cute and cosy.

Google
These savoury crepes are so good, and the value for the sweet ones is incredible. Also highly recommend their hot chocolates! Lots of niche variety that you really can’t find anywhere else.

Google
This is one of the places that really deserves a bad review. The food was average. The portion of fruits and mousse from the brunch were to laugh at. The food was overpriced for the quality of what was served. To top it off, the waitress was rude when we asked to change our table to a bigger one. “French restaurant, French rules” she said. And when she didn’t get her tip in the end because of her lack of empathy and confrontational attitude, she reminded me I was “in Canada” and the tip was customary. Two ways, two measures. I strongly recommend against this place.

Google
The food was really disappointing. I ordered the quiche Lorraine, and for the price, I expected a decent portion. You can see the photo I uploaded. What I got was a small, dry quiche with burnt edges and a basic salad with some dressing on top. Since I was with friends, I didn’t want to make a scene, but this was unacceptable. On a positive note, the restaurant itself looks nice inside, with a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly.

Yelp
Arrived on a whim because we were looking for hot chocolate. Stayed for the brunch and will absolutely be back First, the hot chocolate is the best we've ever had. Thick and rich and like drinking a chocolate bar. Very much a Parisian style "drinking chocolate". Highly recommend. We tried two of the brunch menus. They were delicious. More food than I could eat, the daphinois potatoes are in a huge ramekin. But everything was delicious! We were lucky to get in without a reservation. You'll want to write ahead to get one to be assured you get in. BTW, we spoke English and they were extremely gracious! Wish I was that kind and graceful to those who don't speak the language well or are two embarrassed to try! Give it a try! You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
You know the old adage "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all." But this is yelp... and honesty is the policy. So lets start with positives. The small list if positives: The atmosphere was nice. The ice teas was great. The crepes on my partners plate were yummy. The waiter was friendly. Negatives. The poached eggs and waffles were the only ok things on my plate. There was a "artichoke caviar" that was actually an artichoke mousse; And savoury mousse on a waffle resulted in a mushy, soggy textural experience that wasn't good, you might even say bad. To top it off the dressing on the salad was inedible. We literally couldn't find our waiter to get the bill. And the playlist ended. So we walked around in the silence trying to get bill, then gave up sat down and poked at my mush. After a while we got up and found him outside. And we're finally able to leave.

Yelp
I decided to come here during my stay in Montreal, as it was near where I was staying. The weather was very nice for the 1st week of September so I decided to eat outside. I ordered The Drolet which is Eggs Benedict with smoke salmon on English muffins, gratin dauphinois, salad, fresh fruits, verrine of the day. As you can tell portions are huge! Everything tasted amazing and I even took the gratin home for later. This place gets busy quickly so make reservations or get here early, by the time I left there was a line coming out the door.

Yelp
Food was good, big portion for a small sized female, a good place to hang out with friends.

Yelp
We made reservations right when they opened for 9:30 on a saturday morning. I highly recommend reservations since they seem to get busy really quickly. I enjoyed the food - it was different from what I usually get when out for breakfast. I ordered le foret, which is a mushroom crepe. The crepe was tasty and I ordered it because I love mushrooms however for the price I would have wished that it came with other sides like the other dishes. My husband orderd le roi and it was also very tasty - my favourite was the potate au gratin that it came with. My son also had the pancakes which was nice and fluffy!

Yelp
Come for the hot chocolate but avoid the crepes. The salmon and the mushroom crepes are not light, over salted, and overall lack flavor. Cute place to try chocolate orange, Babette, or Belge hot chocolate.

Yelp
Quaint French bistro with a lot of cute touches, a comprehensive menu, no air conditioning, but solid food. Our waitress was nice. We had to ask for a refill on water more than once. I thought the middle table, where we were sitting, was a little too cramped, so I kept getting bumped when people walked by. My crepe was good, nice ingredients and texture on the crepe itself. I wish it had come with a side salad or something extra, like some of the other dishes. While there was no air conditioning, the front windows were wide open, which was helpful on this very hot summer morning. I wish I had looked at more of the Yelp photos before coming here; it looks like there were some much fancier (and delicious?) things to try on the menu.

Yelp
This place is crazy during Sunday brunch. Named after the classic short story by Danish writer Isak Dinesen aka Baroness Karen Blixen (and subsequent film), "Babette's Feast", this is a very French, Parisian Left-Bank kind of establishment with retro French posters and memorabilia. But the real reason the place is constantly packed is their traditional hot chocolates and their insane brunches. You cannot go wrong with ordering their poached eggs in whatever form, with smoked salmon or ham or whatever. on an English muffin or crumpet All those dishes come with a small salad, a small mushroom veloute soup and a giant pot of scalloped, creamed potatoes (Patates Dauphinois) and tiny cup of chocolate mousse to close up everything. If you can manage to finish all of this, my hat off to you because it's such rich, heavy food that you probably don't need to eat for a day or two afterwards. Service is brisk but friendly.

Yelp
Amazing soup and dauphinoise. BUT the wait for the table and the wait for the food were about an hour on the weekend, so be prepared! Their rose tea is good, but again all rose teas are good for me. Tip. Avoid seating near the kitchen (it can get quite pretty smokey!).

Yelp
The quiche Lorraine was decent but the waitress was having a bad day, or she thinks she's in Paris, where waitstaff can be rude and nobody will say anything. I don't know if it was because my friend and I were speaking in English, but then again we ordered in French. First and last time to spend my money here. Probably they have not noticed that COVID-19 is all around and people are not precisely eager to go eat out and spend money in restaurants. Babette would be disappointed and pissed off for losing a customer.

Yelp
Top breakfast spots in Montreal. Fresh yummy food for 17.50 cad, espresso included.(delicious espresso). Service was a little bit slow but very friendly. The space takes you to a country side house, beautiful decor and cute nick nacks everywhere.

Yelp
Very rustic place. Mismatched furniture, off Knick knacks. Would make a great Instagram photo place. Lots of variety on the menu. I had their brunch. Which comes with eggs, salad, potatoes, soup and dessert. Well worth the price. I was stuffed, actually couldn't finish the potatoes. Friendly service. Would definitely visit again.

Yelp
This is a very great brunch spot, especially in the summer on the terrace! We tried two of the plates, Le Drolet: eggs Benedict on English muffins, topped with smoked salmon and it comes with "gratin dauphinois" and other little sides like a small chocolate mousse. That "gratin dauphinois" is a potato, cheese and cream based meal... made me feel like I was in Paris. This meal was absolutely delicious. The other meal was named Le Laurier: this was a plate consisting of some heart shaped pancakes, yogurt with honey and fruits. It also came with poached eggs. The brunch plate was good, but I was not a fan of the pancakes. They were a little hard and did not taste much. This disappointed me as I am a big pancake fan, but aside from that, very impressed with the rest!

Yelp
Too expensive for what they had... i had an egg benedict plate called la drolet but it had a weird side soup with a desert that I dont personally like. I dont think i will go back there again....

Yelp
Very enjoyable place for brunch. Everything about this place is really nice. The food, presentation, decor and service were all top notch.

Yelp
I highly recommend Au Festin de Babette for their brunch. Their selection of brunches is different than most other places. The one I usually go for includes a hot drink, a soup, a gratin dauphinois, two eggs Benedict, and a chocolate mousse. All of the items are excellent, especially the gratin dauphinois. This meal is usually very satisfying and cost less than $20 which is reasonable for good brunches in Montreal. The interior is very cute and feels homie and the service is usually good.

Yelp
I think at one point I plead with the owners to come with me immediately to California and they politely declined, thinking I was kidding. I have found my favorite tea spot (Alice's Tea Cup, NYC), french toast spot (Mother's Bistro, Portland), and gyros spot (Halal Guys gyros plate, NYC). Today , I have found my favorite hot chocolate spot tucked away in the Latin Quarter of Montreal. I went with the classic Babette hot chocolate from the menu and came close to fainting after the first sip. In fact, I was so overwhelmed by all the happiness going on in my taste bud world, I danced to the counter and in chocolate drunkeness asked the owner to marry me. Ok, no I didn't. But I did say, WHAT IS IN THIS I WANT IT NOW. So I purchased the chocolate chips and spices (special ingredients) to take home with me. Their hot chocolate is stellar. You need some in your life, even though you don't know it yet.

Yelp
I recommended this place to a friend and was excited to try it together. This was my third time visiting this establishment. Unfortunately we had a poor dining experience, especially in terms of service. We ordered a Quebecois brunch platter to share for around $17.50. This included a cup of tea/espresso. The caramelized sausages were delicous however the poached eggs were not seasoned. The pancakes were not very good either and I believe our syrup was not maple syrup, which was a disappointment. Their hot chocolate is delicious, especially The Dalmatian, but a little on the pricey side at $5 a cup (but oh so light and frothy). The service was nothing short of disappointing. If you value service, don't bother coming here. We were meandering around waiting to be assigned a table until I finally asked if we were able to sit anywhere. We then had to ask for our menus as well as place our orders. Ultimately our experience was very lackluster and I will not be returning, no matter how much I love their hot chocolate.

Yelp
Super good brunch. They were kind enough to accommodate my group of 10 people because we showed up at opening. Service was great and food was delicious. Very good hot chocolate!
google avatar

Will H.

Yelp
We arrived shortly after opening and the place was already getting busy! The services was attentive, knowledgeable, and kind. We don't speak French but the server was kind enough to help answer any questions and even took out his phone to show us what the menu choices are. The food was perfect we both got brunch specials and we loved every component. The coffee and hot chocolate were delicious also! We will definitely come back next time we are in Montreal!
google avatar

Yelp
Very cosy and original decor. Really enjoyed the brunch offered for a reasonable price. Definitely a must try for a Sunday morning brunch

Meimei Z.

Yelp
This place is a gem. The brunch plates are huge and delicious in every aspect. The potatoes alone keeps me coming back again and again. Everything is extremely hearty and flavourful, perfect for cold winter days. The menu consists of all the classic brunch dishes and more. Feel free to ask the waitresses for recommendations! They are all very friendly :)

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp and came in for brunch. A popular spot with a cute interior, nice decor. They seemed to have large brunch meal specialities on a board, but they were written in French and our servers did not speak English. I got a mushroom cheese crepe that was great and we split a sweet king kong crepe for dessert. My boyfriend was disappointed when his egg sandwich came out with hard-boiled egg / egg salad on it. If I returned, I would be adventurous and try one of the sampler meal specials.
google avatar

Pierre R.

Yelp
I had a origin chocolate which was pretty good and the service was fast and friendly .... But the salted crepe we had lacked of salt, and overall, taste. Mushrooms on top looked canned and the texture was not great. I can be picky with my crepes so this would explain a lot. The sweet one, salted caramel was good but they were a bit greedy with the quantity of caramel on top. And well, nothing special. Not bad, not great. Kind of a good interior, pretty cute and you can buy products inside too (jams and so on)
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
Not your average hot cocoa. I got the Babette, which was an amazing drinking chocolate with cardamom spice overtones. It was luxurious. Intoxicating, even. The shop is quirky, and was nearly empty on the snowy day we wandered in, but once that chocolate hit my lips I didn't even know which way was up.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
Went here with my boyfriend on a Sunday around 5pm. We ordered a hot chocolate, a crepe with ham, cheese, and mushrooms, and a crepe with caramel. The hot chocolate was a real hot chocolate, served in a bowl with a spoon. The ham, cheese and mushroom crepe wasn't that great. I took a few bites but that's it. The caramel crepe was good. Although all te caramel seemed to be in the middle and not around the edges. It tasted really good though. Te atmosphere is cute and cozy.

Yelp
I honestly regret going there. I was supposed to eat at Régine's Cafe and there was too many people. So I decided to try Au festin de Babette... BIG MISTAKE! The service was horrible... It felt like the waitress didn't want to be there. How do I know? Because her face said so! We got our plates and nobody came to see us to say if everything was OK. I don't think they know the basics of waitressing which is too bad because the food wasn't so bad but not amazing either. I do not recommend this place to anyone who expects a good friendly service. There's a 50 bucks I will never get back! Props to Régine's Cafe!
google avatar

Marisa S.

Yelp
We wanted a quick, light bite after a morning of walking. This was a perfect place. My friend and I split the tomato basil crepe. They were kind enough to plate it separately. A lovely brief respite during our exploration of the Plateau.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a really cool little cafe. I don't get hot chocolate very often, but we were told by our friend that you have try the hot chocolate so we did and we were impressed. I don't remember the exact names of the hot chocolates but I know mines was 64% percent dark chocolate and it was definitely a very rich flavored chocolate. My wife's hot chocolate was a white chocolate with some spices that had a nice little kick at the end. After drinking my dark chocolate, hers tasted quite sweet to me but she loved it. I really enjoyed mine as well. I didn't try the ice cream but it looked like they had about 10-12 flavors to choose from. This is one of those places that's a nice little find on a very busy street.

Anne D.

Yelp
A good brunch but the mini crepes were a little dry and the fruits were missing in my plate.
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
Steaming hot chocolate and I mean chocolate, thick and creamy and chocolaty. If we lived next door we would go every day. I suspect in the winter snow it tastes even better. Arguably the best thing we have had today.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
Excellent Dark Chocolate Gelato! What I would expect from a chocolatier.

Kelvin L.

Yelp
I went here by recommendation of a friend. Though the food was enjoyable, the staff was despondent and absent. When coming here don't expect to be treated well. Come for the food and hot chocolate. But maybe it's best to take it to go.

Ryan E.

Yelp
La babette hot chocolate was "liquid heaven", rich chocolate. Great coffee and good environment to sit, have a coffee, crepe and talk with friends. Very satisfied.
google avatar

Yas H.

Yelp
This is such a lovely little cafe! Very quaint and cute atmosphere. It has a LOT of chocolates to choose from and the hot chocolate is delicious. I ordered Le Babette and it was amazing! A wonderful little stop to warm up while shopping along St. Denis. Remember to bring cash because they have a high minimum to charge on debit/credit.

Catherine W.

Yelp
Wonderful cafe with a happy atmosphere for brunch! Enjoyed the salmon eggs Benedict wth scalloped potatoes and chocolate mouse. Le Belge hot chocolate was life changing!

Sandra N.

Yelp
Delicious for all senses! Our brunch was delicious and the presentation was very cute. We could feel it was made with care. It definitely has a French touch. The staff is very accommodating and nice. Totally recommended!

Lynne R.

Yelp
Cute shop, love the feel of it. The reproductions of 20s era adverts for sale were really tempting. I tried Le Babette. On my first sip I said "Oh WOW!" Drinking chocolates are something I love, and this one was the best I ever had. It definitely made my chilly walk down St.Denis a lot better. Smooth and sweet without being overly so. It wasn't as spicy as I had expected. I am looking forward to trying more of their 21 flavours. Looking forward to stopping here once it warms up and enjoying their terrace.

Yelp
Loads of pastries, chocolates, cookies and gelato! This was definitely a find on Rue St. Denis. There are tons of little cafés, shops & restaurants on this being the most popular street of Montreal. Finding this little gem was a great way to end our stay. This cute and oh so comfy café was the perfect place to enjoy the city and by far, serves the best gelato that I've EVER had! (outside of Italy, of course) The gelato was light, creamy and full of flavor. I enjoyed the gelato so much that I could not leave without having seconds! (it was seriously that good) I know, I know, there are tons of similar establishments in Montreal, but I really do believe that you won't be disappointed at Au festin de Babette. Take a seat, enjoy the café, while sipping a cappuccino, after gorging on one of their delectable pastries or gelatos...you'll almost forget you are in Canada, but rather in some café in Europe.

Emma J.

Yelp
It was better when it was across the street years ago and under former owner. Their terasse is infested with insects.

OandG O.

Yelp
Cute space, not big on culinary value. For the winter's months reduce the # of nice tables in the front room, and replace plastic chair and table in back. Hard to have the cozy designed experience of a French cafe when you are literally sitting on top of each other.

Devni W.

Yelp
Terribly disappointed. Long wait times and mediocre sandwich that took over an hour to make!!
