Where to Eat French Food in San Diego - Eater San Diego

Au Revoir French Bistro was a fun experience. I tried a few things for the first time in my life, which I really enjoy. I had Escargot served with bread and seasoning. It was good tasting but I would rather have the Calamari, which I also ordered. I also had Bone Marrow served "in" the bone with seasoning. It was gelatinous on my fork so I was skeptical but it sure did taste good. Then there were the usual suspects. Lamb Chops, Duck, Salmon, and European White Sea Bass. All of the food was delicious. The place was busier than usual and a little short staffed but the owner was picking up the slack. 10 out of 10, I recommend!

Google
My fiance is French so we’ve been looking for an authentic French restaurant, and this is it!! The bœuf bourguignon was seriously the BEST I’ve ever had. I never thought the dish was anything that special but turns out it was because I never had the real thing! My fiance also said it was authentic and very very good. Same thing goes for everything else on the menu - I tried a rabbit pasta dish for the first time (can’t remember the name) that was also very good, the mushroom soup was cozy and super tasty, the crème brûlée was wonderful, and even the complementary bread and butter spread was delicious. Really great and professional service as well, and the inside of the restaurant is very cute. I can’t wait to go back and try more new things!

I don't know a lot about French cuisine but we liked the two entrees we ordered and cleaned out our plates. We ordered two entrees only since it was lunch time and we don't usually over order .All the food was delicious to us and the service was very courteous and friendly. The ambience was pretty relaxed and casual as expected for a bistro. We will be back to try the other items of their menu .

We ordered the French onion soup and my gosh it's was the worst we have ever tasted. The snails were ok the sauce the snails were cooked in was amazing we ended up dipping out bread in it they should just serve that sauce with the bread. The scallops were nothing special. I would not recommend this restaurant. They really need to focuse on the food and make the chefs try what they are putting out because I would have never had let that French onion soup leave my kitchen and make someone pay for that.

We made a reservation for 5/5:30pm on a Saturday. We were the first patrons there and within the next hour or two there was a full restaurant. The Plateau de fromages (cheese & accoutrements platter) was fun to share. We also shared a Salade du bistro. The candied nuts in the salad were amazing! We ordered various entrees and they did not disappoint! Everything tasted so good! The meat was not dry and the sauces enhanced how well the meat tasted. The veggies were cooked to perfection. We also all enjoyed the lavender French fries. Again, we tried every dessert off the menu to share. The Bread Pudding was a favorite while the Chocolate Mousse was too rich for most. The Crème Brûlée was perfect and the Peach Melba was a nice surprise. It was my husband’s birthday and our server came out with a single scoop of chocolate mousse for him with a candle in it. We really enjoyed our visit and will come again.

We tried this cute little French restaurant in our neighborhood recently, it was ok. We went around 530 thinking we would catch a happy hour. On their website it said they had happy hour I believe from 4 to 6 PM but when we arrived we found out that was old information and they no longer have any happy hour specials. No problem, we decided to order a bottle of Cabernet, calamari and escargot. The calamari was dry and over salted, however, the escargot was phenomenal, probably one of the best I’ve had. We ordered a side of bread to dip in the escargot dish because it was so good! The service was really good, the waiter also brought us a little chocolate mousse on the house which was also delicious.

Google
A nice choice for an elevated French dining experience within the confines of Hillcrest, this place does a decent job of providing a nice experience. The food was cooked well, though the scallops just needed a hint of salt as the rest of the meal was absolutely great. Loved the mushroom filling on the ravioli. The server did a good job considering he was the only one out of the ten-ish other tables there. The strangest issue was the seating situation as there were only four or so options for sitting couples together, which weren’t the best, and as more couples came in, the seating got awkward fast as they ran out and larger parties coming in couldn’t be seated.

Yelp
Solid. Solid. And more solid. The munchers were amazing and ten service was good. For lunch and dinner with a French flair here is the place to go.

Yelp
This was my third time eating here and my feelings have not changed. The food is pricey and just ok- not great and not bad. Certainly not the best french place in town. We ordered the house salad to start. It was well dressed and enough to share but too sweet for my taste. The meal came with plenty of decent bread and mayonnaise. I prefer butter but hubby liked the mayo. i ordered the steak frites and hubby got the mussels. Portions were large. The steak came with a big wet glob of onions which i didn't like. I felt the onion really muted the peppercorn sauce flavor. The fries tasted good but the smell of lavender was so strong that i found it rather off putting. The mussels were also fine. Ambiance was cute and service was good. Overall fine but a bit pricey for just fine.

Yelp
I have not eaten here for many years...not sure how this cute French place fell off my radar. We had a party of six on a Sat night. Food was delicious! Appetizers: We had 2 orders of escargot--little snails in butter/garlic/herbs with a little flaky puff pastry (good not amazing); shared french onion soup (lots of onions sweet and carmelized--temperature on soup could have been hotter); lavendar fries (not a big deal; would not order again); and Moules campagnardes (wonderful creamy broth albeit a bit too much dijon mustaard). And my favorite of the first course. Warm sliced french bread was served with aioli (garlic butter) and we dipped that into the broth for the mussels. Main Entrees: I really enjoyed my salmon with scallops and creamy leak sauce (that was the best part); brazino (whole fish was tender and flaky); pork chop (great sauce), and hanger steak (juicy). Everything was delicious (either a 4.5 or 5.0), except the Beef Bourguignon, which had too much wine (smell was even too strong and the meat was overcooked). It was still a quality meal. Dessert: Three desserts were on the menu and we ordered them all! The creme brulee was very creamy and smooth; the chocolate mousse was melt in your mouth; and the bread pudding while big and beautiful was my least favorite b/c it was like a stack of pancakes. We all enjoyed it. If you can, park in the main lot because it's free. Otherwise, the nearby lot owned by the bank charges $8 for 2 hours, $10 for 3 hours or more. We will come by again. Did you know it offers a 3 course prefix menu for $30 on Tues? Can't wait for our next dinner.

Yelp
It's been a bit of a mixed bag around these parts; today there were just a few more lows. What's good: The fries are tasty when crispy. The chicken from the chicken sandwich is usually seasoned well, and the accompanying crusty bread is righteous . Absolutely love that they use brie on that bad boy. The breakfast potatoes were herbaceous and cooked to perfection. Bacon was crispy and beautifully salty Their aioli is wonderful on the fries. Prices are reasonable Can use some help: The 3 eggs over easy eggs were brown on the outside, with undercooked whites on the inside. The steak was chewy and undercooked. I didn't even finish my half. Asked for the salad on the side, as to not mix the salad and dressing with the béarnaise from the steak, or the fries. Unfortunately it was missed. The chicken sandwich always falls apart due to the large romaine spines. Also, the lettuce was really wilted and unpleasant. And sadly, no aioli was provided for their lavender fries. Also, fries were really soggy this time. All in all, a decent meal with some solid hiccups. We'll definitely be back though as they normally put out 4 stars and up! Thanks Au Revoir!

Yelp
Great atmosphere, especially on a rainy day. We were one of four couples for the majority of the night. The staff was friendly and attentive. We ordered: Mussels - ok nothing special French onion soup- great! glad I ordered Beef Bourgogne- the beef was tough to chew a bit on the drier end. The sauce heavy, and unbalanced. Steak Frites- good steak, great fries. An ok meal. Nothing impressive nor note worthy. This place is great for a light snack, soup, glass of wine. Likely wouldn't visit again for dinner.

Yelp
I know a lot of my reviews talk about "gems"...and I simply love it when I discover restaurants off the beaten path that simply provide great food and exceptional service. This restaurant was just that! We were walking around Hillcrest and looking for a place to have a light bite and a drink and stumbled upon this fantastic corner restaurant. We walked in, they sat us down immediately and we had one of the most amazing servers who was managing the entire restaurant area and didn't skip a beat with us! I had the French Onion soup and the bone marrow...I almost died and went to heaven!! It was so delicious and if it weren't too fattening I would have ordered another one! Grilled and seasoned to perfection! This place is totally worth it and I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Came here for dinner on August 10th. I was seated right away and was offered still or sparkling water. After food and drinks were ordered, I was given bread and butter. The butter was so good. I ordered a kit Royale and the chicken, it came with potatoes and a bechamel sauce with mushrooms. For dessert, I got the brioche pudding, and it was amazing. The space is really nice with French music playing. It's located on Robinson Avenue, there's a small parking lot.

Yelp
Au Revoir is a charming bistro that's been a staple in Hillcrest for years. I've been here a few times and I've always had great service and food. We started with the French onion soup that was full of delicious onions and plenty of Gruyere. The puff pastry was very well done, flaky and tasty. Our entrees were the roasted chicken breast and hanger steak. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. The two things I'd like to see updated is the color palette, to be brighter and more inviting then to have the bathrooms to be charming & functional.

Yelp
We were going to see Les Mis at the Civic, so figured a French dinner beforehand would be nice. I was here quite a while back when it was La Vache. It is a charming French spot with friendly service and even parking. On Tuesdays, they have a three course menu for $45. Between the two of us, we ordered one three course dinner with the French onion, soup, steak, Frites, and chocolate mousse, and added a Caesar salad. It was more than enough for the two of us. the steak was very flavorful, and the thin crispy fries were very tasty. Minus one star, because the website needs to be updated. It says they have happy hour Tue-Friday 4-6, but our waiter said it has been discontinued. And the website says the Tuesday 3-course dinner is $30, but it's now $45. But, overall a nice dining experience.

Yelp
I don't like giving bad reviews but I really hope Au Revoir can make some significant changes after tonight's experience. Gf and I arrive onsite around 630 pm. We were quickly seated by the lone server. After about 15-20 minutes, server took our order. Soup arrived around 720 pm (50 minutes). Around 8pm, our food still hasn't arrived. Server was busy with other customers perhaps? Gf was getting impatient as she had a long drive home. I asked the server for an eta for food and it finally around 820. The food was mediocre. Duck confit was really dry and a bit too gamey? Something tasted off...My gfs ravioli was okay. Presentation of the entrees seemed a bit haphazard - cook must have been stressed or tired? Hey, I get it - no one is perfect but waiting 2 hrs for food and getting served lukewarm dishes was a bit disappointing. No explanation of the delay from the server; just a rushed service. Server forgets dessert and we also had to remind him. By 9pm, we were ready for the check and ready to leave. There are plenty of good places to eat in Hillcrest - Au Revoir isn't one of them :( Please please avoid this place if you see only a single server and two disgruntled cooks.

Yelp
Rack of Lamb! We'll get to the review in a second, but the French Rack of Lamb was awesome. Perfectly cooked, with a fantastic crust, and a generous portion that's enough to share. 8 bones, double-cut, tender, served perfectly hot with a potent glaze on a magnificent aubergine-forward Ratatouille. At $38, that dish left a memory and a mark by which to measure others. Of course, we have to talk about the lavender fries, as one does. If I had to guess, I would not have guessed This Good. It's a winner, unique, and something I haven't seen anywhere else. Don't worry -- doesn't taste like perfume or the fries any disservice. It's addicting. Would go back just for this. The filet medallions were excellent, if a bit pricy at $42 for the size, and the onion soup might be the best deal on the menu. Moules! Plump, tasty flawless mussels make for an excellent excuse to dip that bread. Strangely, the bread itself was .. ordinary. Maybe my imagination of French-restaurant bread is less dry and simple, but this wasn't your steakhouse-fresh warm bread either. Chocolate Mousse was delicious for being restrained.. clean, delightful texture, not overly sweet. No trace left behind. Okay, the restaurant, sure.. We lucked out on parking with an open spot right in front, but you should certainly have a Plan B for Hilcrest. Service was excellent, friendly, and helpful. Wines by the glass were quite reasonable. Tables are perhaps a little close together, but our neighbors were awesome regulars and helpful mentors of the menu. I get the Bistro vibe, but here's the conundrum.. it's great French food at fine-dining prices. We ran up quite a tab, what with the 3-course menu and wine -- special dinner, right? You might reasonably wish for a tablecloth, or less bustling ambiance for your date night, or... you might be cool right here. You'll be glared at by ultra-bright headlights from the intersection through the window throughout, so give your date the "good seat".

Yelp
The food is very fancy and nice, some of the escargots had 2 snails, 4.5.I also like the onion soup, a 4.2. The mussels 4. Bread is normal, the butter is really good. The service is very nice. The ambiance is fancy causal. It is a little decorative. Around the booths and a little all around. Overall

Yelp
This was our second time dining here. We didn't have a reservation either time, but we arrived right at opening for dinner and were able to score a table. We had the calamari, mussels, ravioli, fries, brioche pudding and chocolate mousse-all were great! The server is kind and attentive while handling host/server/food runner and bussing all by himself. The French music playing was at a nice volume. A parking lot in busy Hillcrest is another plus.

Yelp
After extraordinarily rude treatment at their neighbor, Gooseberries Kafe, where I left a separate review, we stumbled upon here without even seeing any Yelp reviews. It was early and empty, so we were immediately seated and had our order taken and the food arrived so quickly! It was really delicious. The steak in the baguette sandwhich was actually tender and perfectly medium according to my husband's wishes. The apple and arugula honey puffed pastry was delicious and a wonderful surprise treat. The French soup was done well! The pomme frites were perfectly Crispy and seasoned (my 12 year old thought they were a tad salty, but I don't know what she's talking about). Lovely and welcoming lunch. Thanks so much!

Yelp
My parents used to love this place so we all visited recently. Right off the bat I noticed that the tables and menus all looked a little run down and the general cleanliness felt questionable. There was one waiter serving the entire restaurant the whole time we were there, which resulted in pretty sparse service. The waiter was nice, but just couldn't be attentive to us. The food was good, with one exception. We added bone marrow to the steak frites and it was foul - actually inedible. We sent it back to the kitchen basically untouched (and were still charged for it at the end of the night)! Also there was a hair in the sauce of one of the steak frites. We will not be returning to this restaurant, as the cleanliness and service left a lot to be desired. It's too bad, as the food was good and the prices were fairly reasonable.

Yelp
Every year we have a large group that goes to this restaurant after the Pride parade ‍. Every year this restaurant has poor service, possibly due to understaffing. However, with this restaurant being located in Hillcrest and with Pride consistently falling on the 3rd weekend of July every year - there's simply no excuse to be surprised by an uptick in customers during this time frame. This year, we had 3 people arrive later than the rest of the group. The waiter barely acknowledged our friends and never gave them place settings. Eventually, they scooped place settings from a nearby table - when it appeared the waiter couldn't care less. The wait was excruciatingly long, even for drinks. Our friends don't remember the server checking on them, explaining the long wait, or even being warm and friendly. To top it off, the steak portion was barely a child sized portion. Conclusion: Dreadful service and small portions of food - make this a skippable restaurant.

Yelp
My friends and I went to Au Revoir last week after we were unable to get reservations at another local restaurant. I was actually quite happy to go there, as I remember lovely dinners from many years past. I arrived first for our dinner reservation for three. I caught the attention of the one server working that night who told me that they would be clearing a booth for us shortly. As it is quite small, I waited outside for my friends to arrive. Durning the next 15-20 minutes, I saw people come and go, as they realized that there was not enough staff, they were not acknowledged at the door, and decided to go elsewhere. Anyway, my friends arrive and we waited another 15 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was rather full, though not completely and the single server was trying to do his best, but really could not acknowledge more than one group at a time. We tried to do our best by choosing our drinks and appetizers right away so that we could get our order in when he came by our table. The restaurant itself is super cute. I like the whimsical paintings on the walls and the French country style. When the server did come, he was polite enough, but there just was not really enough time to get great service and attention. He did try to fill our waters throughout. I really liked the wine selection and we had a great French red blend along with the bread and our baked camembert appetizer. I actually really enjoyed all parts of this. It was a perfect wine, bread and cheese spread. For dinner, we shared the sea bass with risotto, the duck confit, and the mushroom ravioli. The ravioli was amazing. The other dishes were good, but not as memorable. At the end of our dinner, we tried to split the check on 3 cards as we usually do when we go out, but were only allowed two. It also took them a long time to clear our plates which isn't so nice when you are sitting and finishing your wine. I honestly think this is more of a 2.5 star review, but I rounded up because the place is so darn cute, and I also am aware of the labor shortage today. I would give them another try, but I will wait a while to return.

Yelp
We used to love this restaurant. We hadn't been here in a few years so my partner and I took my parents to dinner. There were 4 of us on a Saturday night for a 4:30 reservation. We were the first ones in the restaurant and we ordered appetizers, tea, beer, and entrees. We had high hopes for the tart with apples and camembert...it had all the makings of being a great dish, but it was not. (The "melted" cheese was cold and the "puffed" pastry was flat and greasy). The worst part of the meal was the beef bourguignon. We are sure the meat was left over from days before...the chef was probably hoping the sauce would hide how hard and tough it was. The texture was like it had been cooked, chilled, and then recooked. The waiter got our order incorrect on several items, which would not have been an issue, except for what happened at the end of the meal. About 10 minutes after we were done eating, he asked us to leave because the restaurant had "a busy night ahead." We had been there about 1 hour and 45 minutes, with very little "downtime" besides eating. We spent approx. $200, paid our bill (with a 20% tip) and just started chatting when he asked us to leave. My mom's husband was fairly shocked. Not only that, but there were a handful of empty tables in the restaurant. I understand that this is becoming common place with restaurants - not allowing people to stay very long after their meals are done. But it is unsavory and embarrassing when you are enjoying a nice evening with your family and it happens to you. I worked in restaurants for over a decade in the 80s and 90s. There isn't one restaurant I worked for that would have thought this was acceptable. I could understand it if Au Revoir were busy, if there were a line of people waiting, or if we were "camping" at the table and not eating or drinking. But there were no people waiting, tables were available, and we had just finished our meals. We will not go to this restaurant again. There are better restaurants in Mission Hills. We LOVE the Red Door where the service and food are exquisite - they get our business next time. Post edit: My family said I forgot to mention the putrid sewer smell in the restaurant. It was pretty bad. I had been told previously that this can happen when or after it rains in San Diego? I don't know if that is true or not, but it was pretty grose to try and eat a meal with sewage smell going up your nose.

Yelp
3.5 stars... I long for euro travel and the French bistro, and didn't realize this joint was near our hood! Entered and was promptly seated at my reservation time, and drink orders were quickly taken. Modestly priced bottles of wine, though we didn't get a chiller to keep it cold. Started out with the French onion soup...good presentation and consistency, though there was a heavy flavor of pepper that I couldn't shake. Steak frites was my entree choice, and it did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked thin steak with gravy and onions and thin crispy fries...wonderful! Ambiance is strip mall chic, service was helpful and friendly, and prices were in line with expectation. We had a fun time and will be back....this joint makes the list!

Yelp
Went here on a week night to enjoy some french food. We had not visited them before. This is a very authentic French restaurant. We shared the bistro salad and had steak frites and branzino for the main dishes. The food was very good / authentic. It was a great meal and we much enjoyed the restaurant.

Yelp
I've dined here a handful of times for special occasions and I always have to get the boeuf bourguignon. It's my favorite dish here the beef and veggies are all tender while the pearl onions give a light crisp. I've also had the escargot which tasted great for someone who has never tried it before here. The french onion soup is amazing here as well. The service is great. On a slow night the service may be slow only because there's one server and one chef. This is a great date night spot.

Yelp
Delicious & authentic cuisine, we felt like the portions and quality were great. Server was on top of his game Ambiance was ' ok '. Great location was walking distance to the hotel.

Yelp
Whenever I visit the Hillcrest area I don't have the chance to stop by and see what food spots are nearby, so I was very excited that I finally had the chance to stop by and explore what food spots are around. So for a nice lunch I visited Au Revoir French Bistro. This place is in the heart of Hillcrest and it has the cutest interior that makes you feel very close and homey. I went around 2 pm and it was pretty empty and quiet which I personally liked since I was craving some alone time. The server I got was so sweet, attentive, and gave the best recommendations, so I am very sad I didn't catch his name. For appetizers I tried the Calamars Fris and I really enjoyed them! The tartare sauce was just right and went well with the crispyness of the calamari. I also tried the tarte fine aux poires et gorgonzola and these were okay. I personally found the puff pastry to be quiet flat but the flavor was pretty good and it was a bit messy to eat since it would fall apart a bit. For the main course I had the Steak Frites and wow was this just fantastic. The steak was cooked perfectly to my liking and the sauce was super yummy. I think the star of the dish was the lavender fries. I had personally never had such a thing and I was so surprised on how great it was. I can't wait to go back and try some more food and have more of those fries.

Yelp
I was looking for a chill French restaurant and this place hit the spot! It was quiet with typical French cafe music playing and the waiter was nice. I was pleasantly surprised when I asked for a couple slices of bread and got a whole baguette with mustard and it was complimentary. Escargot was tasty, lavender French fries were interesting, and the steak was perfectly cooked medium which I ordered.

Yelp
My rating is mainly for the false advertising on their website Tuesday prefix menu $30. This happens to be restaurant week in San Diego there are so many choices for the $30-$45 range however we went here even though supposedly this is the price every Tuesday much to our surprise when we got there the menu said $45 for that price I would've wanted to have tried anywhere else that I hadn't been to for restaurant week. The duck was good not a substantial amount of meat I didn't care for the cauliflower hopefully in the future if I ever go back there will be a different option to go with the duck. .

Yelp
This place squeezes in all the France that you need for a Parisienne meal, including the uncomfortable French bistro chairs and cliché French accordion music. Lucky for us, these are American portions and American-level speed and service attentiveness, so don't worry about ALL the snobby-ness that comes with the territory of a French experience. My main knock off a star is for the overly salted appetizers and entrees. Our whole party agreed on feeling the need to balance out the salt with more bread or drinks. Otherwise, the escargots, tartare de bouef and caesar salad were pretty good. My sea bass + lemon risotto was delicious and hearty. Beware that the menu online does not reflect the exact menu of the day. I walked in thinking I knew exactly what I wanted to order, but ended up changing my mind for something else! Overall, an enjoyable dining experience for a romantic dinner or small-group dinner.

Yelp
Oh, dinner was not good here. We usually have French food at Et Voila in North Park and since we moved we wanted to try this neighborhood restaurant. Service gave off a vibe of being a nuisance. Bread tasted stale and the spread was some mustard-mayo like sauce that wasn't good. Ordered the pistachio crusted halibut but it came out with some almonds sprinkled over it, definitely not crusted. Everything else tasted pretty bland. Won't be going again, but rather take an Uber to head over to North Park to spend our money at Et Voila or Wormwood.

Yelp
Au Revoir French Bistro was okay. I came in on a Saturday night by myself. Immediately upon entering I noticed there wasn't many patrons inside, so I figured cool it should be an easy night. While before I was greeted, the server walked up to the front looked at his watch then greeted me. I felt weird, but whatever it's 8 and your hours are until 9:30. I kept it simple and had a red blend and ordered the steak. The steak was okay, nothing to write home about. I felt it lacked flavor and the cut of meat wasn't all that great. I felt like I got the scraps of the night, the piece no one would want lmao. They gave me a ton of fries which was nice. Took a while to get my second glass of wine. I know it was the end of the day and the server just didn't look like he was enthusiastic from beginning to end. I was having a really hard day emotionally, so I really tried to be as kind as possible but I just felt awkward in our interaction. I would like to give this place another try in the future, when it's not the end of the night

Yelp
Time to officially say "Au Revoir" to Au Revoir. We used to frequent this restaurant and it had been about a year and half since we were last here. Unfortunately, the food was quite disappointing. We ordered all appetizers: St. Jacque Gratin (scallops), French onion soup, duck salad, lavender fries, bone marrow, and mussels with white wine and garlic. The scallops were ok. Just too heavy on the Gruyère cheese. The French onion was too sweet and heavy on the onions with hardly any broth. The server even said the chef knew it was too sweet because of the type of onions they used....THEN WHY SERVE IT?!? The onion soup was horrible and was not even hot. The duck salad description mentioned a "soufflé goat cheese." There was nothing soufflé about the cheese. Just looked like a clump of regular goat cheese smeared on a piece of toast. Mussels were decent but it was served warm. Then the bone marrow. We paid $15 for two skinny bones that hardly was a teaspoon of marrow. They served the marrow with 4 pieces of bread, and we only had enough marrow to smear one half piece of the toast. The lavender fries ended up being the best item on the table. Other than that, everything else was very disappointing and not the same like we used to remember. Au Revoir!

Yelp
Wow. This restaurant is a total win! I went for a friend's birthday, the food, the ambiance and the company are still memorable.

Yelp
Always a delight to dine here I love the food and service. I've been coming here for years and the cuisine here is unique in its care and preparation. Great parking and excellent service. Reasonable huge portions too. Beef Bourguignon is always Excellent. Creme Burle is out of this world.

Yelp
I am not sure how this place has such high reviews. We came here for dinner and the server we had was awful from the beginning. As a former server I couldn't believe this man's behavior as we seemed to be an inconvenience to him from when we walked in, mind you we were there at 4:30pm and there was only one other table. We asked to purchase bread and our server told us "no" and then walked away. I saw he dropped a loaf of bread off to the table next to us so I asked him why the table next to us got bread. He proceeded to say "Well the bread is complimentary. You can't purchase it." We the. Asked if we could get some bread and ordered our French onion soups. Every soup was a different size portion and on the smaller end and had a small slice a cheese that was barely melted (not broiled either). Between the poor service and inconsistency I would not recommend.

Yelp
LOBSTER... CHAMPAGNE... BRUNCH... Three of my favorite things combined into one! CHAMPAGNE...$12 Unlimited Mimosas. A single glass is $7, so you'll definitely want to spend the extra $5. We ended up drinking 4 bottles of champagne between the 4 of us. Needless to say, we went for a long walk around Hillcrest before driving anywhere. LOBSTER...$11 for a 3 egg scramble with up to 5 ingredients, and lobster happens to be of the choices! My other ingredients: mushrooms, brie, steak, and truffle shavings...a freaking exotic and delicious egg scramble that only set me back $11. This also comes with sides of potatoes and fresh fruit. Did I mention it was only $11? I also tried my friend's escargot($9 for 6), which I thought I would hate but learned that I love these chewy, garlicky, and buttery snails, yum! The mussels($16 large) here are also fabulous too. BRUNCH...I've been living in San Diego since 1998, and I've only now discovered fabulous French bistro...I'm definitely comeback here again!

Yelp
Au Revoir is a small faux French bistro with dated and somewhat cheesy decor, but the food is outstanding.  The wait staff was attentive and prompt, our food and drinks came in a timely fashion and were all excellent.  The sole nitpick with our food was that my glass of red wine was served warm rather than at cellar temp, which detracted somewhat from the enjoyment of the wine with the meal. We ordered the hangar steak with rosemary fries and the mushroom ravioli with beurre blanc sauce.  Both were exceptionally good, the steak was perfectly cooked medium rare, the fries were expertly seasoned so that they were flavorful without being overwhelming and the raviolis were hearty and absolutely delicious, covered generously with what I can only describe as the best beurre blanc I've ever had.  Thanks to the judicious use of lemon zest there was a touch of acidity and tartness involved that really brightened the dish up and helped greatly in preventing it from feeling too rich or heavy.  The raviolis were nestled on beds of perfectly cooked spinach and in combination with the outstanding sauce made for one excellent bite after another. Other than the minor annoyance of warm wine, my only negative comments here have to do with what I see as a kind of dated, old fashioned "look, we're a bistro in France!" decor which persists throughout the restaurant, from the art work to the signage to the menu, where every dish is named in French.  It came across to me more as what you'd see in a theme park version of a French bistro than as a genuine expression of French culture and cuisine.  A more refined take on a bistro where the decor is stylish and modern, the menu is entirely in english and the food itself is expected to speak to the French nature of the restaurant would be a big improvement in atmosphere in my opinion, particularly considering how very well the food does speak.   Regardless of the decor, though, this is absolutely a restaurant I will eat at many more times, it was truly delicious and I can't wait to go back

Yelp
This is a French bistro in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Atmosphere is homey and friendly. Seems like they're trying new things with lavender and other French touches. We were here in mid June 2021. Covid restrictions are lightening up and restaurants are making their struggle back. Menu was limited but good selections. Flavors came up short of our expectations. The onion soup had way too many onions and less soup, bread and even cheese. Pomme Frites with lavender was a surprise. Heh heh...looking for old-fashion seasoned fries. Flowers!! Was hoping to have traditional Cassoulet. Not that day. They are worth a try. We'll try others but come back if in the neighborhood.

Yelp
We've had dinner here multiple times, and we're impressed so we decided to have our family holiday brunch here today. We were equally impressed by the brunch. The bottomless mimosas where a steal at $12 given that they came with fresh oj. I had a create your own scramble with steak, blue cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and spinach. It was amazing. Every bite had blue cheese flavor. My only (minor) complaint is that while the onions were cooked, they were not really caramelized. My wife had the conard confit benedict. She was equally impressed with her meal. The chef even made her medium poached eggs. The service was equally as impressive as the quality of the food. We did not want for anything, even with our party of 7.

Yelp
Wow! Mussels are giant size, plumb & juicy! Duroc pork chop was super moist & flavorful! It came with cauliflower infused mashed potatoes so delightful, I actually thought I bit into crab meat or scallops bits! Complimentary French bread, ask to have it toasted a bit longer for better crunch. Will be back again! FYI the cauliflower mash potatoes didn't appear in the pork chop photos below cuz I ate it all so delish!

Yelp
This place is in the worst area and I drove two hours to take my mom out for her birthday and had reservations but they told us at 2pm that they were slow so they were closing! Unbelievable! I had to wait until two weeks before to make the reservation all to have to get turned down when we got there AND I paid $30 in parking all for nothing! I will never come here again! Horrible and rude.

Yelp
For the price I would've expected more. The food came out promptly and the waitstaff very friendly. The actual taste of the food was pretty bland though. The mushroom ravioli was a little flavorless, however the sauce it came with was very aromatic and tasty

Yelp
Happily surprised! My husband and I love French culture, from the wine to pretension we're here for it. I would say this restaurant is probably more practiced than pretentious. Don't let the calm ambiance fool you, the kitchen is bumping. We had the special of the day ( steak medallions with scallops, mixed veggies and lavender fries), the gorgonzola tart, the French onion soup, the mushroom raviolis and cream brûlée. ALL of the dishes were spectacular! We also got a bottle of GSM aged in amphora, only 40 bucks! The service was also incredible, we had a wonderful server Tuesday night . She was kind but straight to the point. We saw her often but usually wordlessly checking in on us or refreshing our waters.

Yelp
I had a lovely dinner last night with friends at Au Revoir French Bistro. The ambiance is quaint, there is patio seating And they have their own parking lot. The Food: Appetizer: The French Onion Soup this is a very good soup and you can tell they use real high quality white cheese that was gooey and melty in the dish. It had a nice crusty bread and the broth had a great flavor with hints of thyme and herbs de Provence. Entree: Salmon with roasted potatoes. The salmon is very good quality and came with a creamy herb infused white sauce. This dish came with small roasted fingerling potatoes and roasted broccoli. This was very good and I recommend you order this dish. My friend ordered the steak frites. The steak was ok ( a little chewy when ordered medium ) with a nice mushroom and onion cream sauce. I think it's best to get the steak frites well done or medium - well. The fries were infused with a lavender type essence. This is a very generous portion. The Maalbec wine from Argentina is the best on the menu. Overall this is one of the better fine dining spots in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. Make sure you get the salmon !!

Yelp
I don't know how we missed this place for as long as it's been around! Great food, I love the street side seating and the atmosphere is just all over wonderful. French food may have fallen out of favor, and truthfully, it's not one of my favorites. HOWEVER Au Revoir just gets it right! It's a great date night spot, relaxing evening spot and they seem to handle somewhat bigger groups very well, even in Covid world. It blends in a little as you drive by - but definitely worth the spot!

Yelp
Au Revoir is a classic French bistro that feels like it needs it's owner and chef to take more of an interest in it. Aricelli was our server and she was very nice and capable. My husband and I split the French onion soup and it was a classic. The bread was served with a mustard aioli. I had a duck special with cherry sauce and mashed potatoes. My dinner was cold. Aricelli took it back to the kitchen and they did reheat it in the oven, not the microwave. Even heated, it was just okay. I probably should have went with the Duck confit or the Sea bass. My husband had the lamb chops which were cooked to perfection. We split a creme brûlée for dessert which was delicious. The cooking and restaurant just lacked a little spark. However, the prices are reasonable. However, if Au Revoir is going to keep up with the competition for my dining dollars in San Diego, they may need to kick it up a notch and their kitchen needs to figure out a way to have all the dinners be served hot to the table.
