"This place exudes brasserie appeal thanks to its charming, stylish atmosphere and unfussy, honest seasonal menu, which also includes classic dishes. Despite its proximity to the centre, the location is pleasantly quiet – outside, an attractive terrace with shady trees beckons. There are well-kept guestrooms for overnight stays. Tip: Take the opportunity to visit Basel Historical Museum opposite." - Michelin Inspector

Beautiful room with a view of the cathedral, the hotel is up high above the town centre so no traffic noise at night. Friendly staff at reception, we also had breakfast here which was continental style, plenty of choice and lovely fresh bread. Easy access via the lift straight into the centre of town. We ate at the restaurant on our second night (it's closed on Sundays). Beautiful setting under the trees, a good quality meal, well cooked, lovely waiting staff. We would definitely stay here again, it was a perfect 2 night break on our journey to the Alps. The only problem was the lack of air conditioning in the room as we were there during a very hot week.

I am staying at a nearby hotel without a restaurant and wandered in to the restaurant at this hotel. I was immediately greeted and seated as a solo diner without a reservation. The staff was amazing at paying attention to when I was ready to order another drink or food, or ready to pay, I never had to try to get their attention. The food was excellent as well, especially the escargot. The interior is also so charming in both a rustic and elegant way. If you've got the budget for a lovely french meal in Basel, this is the way to go!

We had a fantastic vacation staying at this warm and welcoming and historic hotel located in the center of Basel. The hotel has a fabulous restaurant where we enjoyed breakfasts as well as a wonderful dinner on thrir outside patio. Mary, the reception manager of the Brasserie au Violon, went out of her way to ensure that we had the most comfortable and quiet rooms. When we made our reservation, we opted for a very large room overlooking the square, however, when we arrived, Basel was the location of the Eurovision Song Contest and Mary was worried that with the music coming from the festivities, we wouldn’t be able to sleep. Mary urged us to consider taking a less expensive room that faced the other side of the hotel! She proceeded to give us discounts on our breakfasts so that we would be compensated for our less expensive room! Our room was indeed, quiet! The hotel staff took excellent care of making our beds and we absolutely loved staying at this magnificent hotel!||And as it happened, on our last evening at the hotel, The Swiss won a soccer tournament and there was a tremendous celebration with thousands of people singing and celebrating. Mary encouraged and invited us to go to the top floor of the hotel to one of those larger rooms overlooking the festivities, so we could have a fantastic view of the celebration! We were able to take great pictures and enjoy the event from ghe safety of our wonderful hotel!

We used the restaurant, 2 times now, both with group of 8-9 people. The food was delicious but service time was too long. Only recommended if you have enough time to wait.

Reviewing the restaurant. Went for lunch. The restaurant has a lovely, shady terrace. Not cheap. Delicious French food, nice wine list, and good service. I had fish and a very nice French Sauvignon Blanc.

We loved Au Violin! It’s a lovely boutique hotel in the heart of Basel. It might slso been one of the most unique hotels where you enter through a lovely courtyard but can exit via an elevator that that takes you down approximately three floors and exits just steps from the restaurants, stores snd where the trams are located. The hotel used to be a woman’s prison and the rooms, while small are very cosy and comfortable. Ghe mansger, Mary was wonderful and we were slso impressed with the rest of the staff. Wexwere fortunate to be there during the Eurovision Song Festival!

Yelp
I am delighted to be the first to review this beautiful hotel! My travel companion and I had to make last min change to our travel plans and found ourselves needing a place in Basel and through a reference, we landed in this excellent Hotel. WOW, WHAT A TREAT! It started as a monastery and has had many lives but the most infamous is as a prison! The hospitality, generosity, and sense of style are noticeable. They greeted us after a weary travel with a smile and delicious food recommendations. They have a lovely continental breakfast, the rooms are clean and efficient, and when you hear music from the conservatory next door waft through the courtyard you know truly know "the hills are alive with the sound of music". Beside Basel being a most beautiful town, this is a "must consider" in your travel plans through Switzerland.
