"This old Provençal bastide on the outskirts of Avignon upholds the traditions of Gallic bourgeois establishments devoted to good food. Noble produce and classical recipes are the name of the game, albeit with the occasional more modern creation, such as tataki of house smoked salmon on a pannacotta of green vegetables. Southern Côte du Rhône wines take pride of place in the cellar. Lovely terrace in fine weather and polished service." - Michelin Inspector

I imagine that the Auberge Cassagne was once a rural retreat on the outskirts of Avignon. Today it is not. Such is progress that the encroaching mix of working class sprawl and industrial polígons provide an incongruent entreè for the promise of what is registered officially as a small luxury hotel of the world. First signs not encouraging. The entry is marked by a compound wall carrying the hotel signage in a rather gaudy calligraphy a la 1970’s. Our arrival and check in was smooth enough although it became clear that on first impressions, the glory and good standards for taste and style of the 1970’s had somehow remained in place as if time had not wearied them. Except that it had. Everything was clean but tired and dated. In the end, “ everything” , so to say, is personal perception and opinion. I’m willing to accept that some people will love the “ charm” of the Auberge Cassagne. I was not charmed in the least, and not least of all, for the exorbitant price. More on that later. We were escorted to our suite by the porter, a character who gave an exhaustive account of everything that was “ free” and “ nice” about our room and its amenities. It felt strange. Our foray to the swimming pool included an attempt to order a cold beverage . The procedure includes a QR code for the menu but for some inexplicable reason, you must then dial the hotel reception from your mobile phone and place an order. Two long distance calls to the hotel reception and 45 minutes later, our cold beverage had not yet arrived. We then launched an expedition to find the beers and met them coming our way to which we settled for a sip in the garden surrounds. The garden is a quadrangle of grassed area and hibiscus bushes surrounded by the motel rooms and suites. To one end of the garden area, nearest the main building, we may find the restaurant.. .. ahh, yes.. the restaurant. We arrived for dinner at 8.50pm. Placed our order at 9pm. By 10pm I had not eaten anything except bread. My wife was served a dish which she had not ordered. I cancelled my first dish in the hope of expediting things for a bed time before 11pm. Eventually my food arrived and indeed, both dishes were very nice. The service was a disaster. The food was nice. By this stage , and after having driven 7 hours across Italy, my mind had warped into a bourdeaux-induced paranoia that somehow we were in a hidden camera comedy and that infact everything was a deliberate set-up of Fawlty Towers proportions. It was a very strange vibe indeed. So strange that we resolved to cut our stay short. Having prepaid the two night’s accommodation I took the €1200 bill on the chin but really, for as much as I could laugh about some of the surrealist adventure of 12 hours at the Auberge Cassagne, it was patently obvious that this auberge is NOT worthy of being a small luxury hotel of the world. Nothing was “ free”, and neither was it “nice”.

We spent two nights as part of a Secret Escapes deal.||We stayed in room 25 which is a park room on the ground floor with a pretty terrace overlooking the interior garden.||It looked and felt like a mini villa.||Very spacious. Large king size bed. External and internal table and seating. Dressing table, fridge, tea coffee facilities and safe. Loads of storage and large bathroom with shower.||Pool area was also very nice as well and opens early so you can swim before breakfast. Also heated.||Great selection at breakfast too where you can eat on the terrace as well.||The hotel is next to a primary school so during the day during term time you can hear the kids playing. It did not disturb us at all, it sounded like they were having a great time!||Great hotel and would recommend.

This hotel in Avignon offers a great location, with a short 10-minute drive to the city center. The availability of free parking is a convenient perk. The rooms are spacious and well-maintained, providing a comfortable stay. Although the rooms are located on the second floor, the hotel staff is helpful and assists with luggage. The highlight is the amazing breakfast served in the garden, where guests can enjoy fresh orange juice from an automatic machine. The hotel also features a spa with a pool, whirlpool, steam room, and sauna that are open until late, allowing guests to relax and unwind.

The hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Avignon and is approached through a commercial area but once inside is an absolute tranquil haven. There is ample parking and staff were quick and helpful at check in. The rooms are layed out around a courtyard and pool. They are beautifully appointed and comfortable with seating outside and ours was 2 steps from a peaceful pool. Dinner was served outside and was an exquisite set menu with an extensive wine list.

Moved from Aix-En to this property in La Pontet, outside Avignon. The hosts made us feel very welcome on arrival and the owner was always extremely friendly.|The rooms are very spacious and the staff especially Thomas and Helena were fantastic.|This property is probably due for a major facelift, the pool area had weeds growing everywhere. the gardening staff need to lift their game bigtime, the biggest downside is you are a 30 Euro taxi ride away from the village, so everytime you go and come back you are 60 Euro lighter, why they don't run a shuttle is bewildering.|We ate at the restaurant the food was fantastic, expensive but very nice. They don't have a bar you can sit in the afternoon, which is also a downside for me.|Breakfast was ok |As i said i would only rate this property 4 star.||Thanks||Gavin

This spacious spa on the outskirts of Avignon provides easy access to the wineries and mountain villages of the Cote du Rhone. After a day of driving circuitous roads, it's nice to come home to a spa with all the relaxing features you need to rejuvenate before you do it all over again the next day. ||We loved the bountiful breakfast buffet every morning and enjoyed a beautiful dinner one evening. The service was very good and everyone spoke some English. ||There is a large free car park.

Very nice hotel and they have pretty grounds. Our room was nice. They have turn down maid service in the evening whoch is a nice touch. They have an extensive breakfast with a large selection. If in Avignon again, I would stay here. It is a short drive to the city center.
