"This farmstead in the heart of a remote picturesque village (ideal for walks in the country) is the HQ of a chef who competently and carefully crafts traditional recipes. Save room for the cheese board and Salers cheese, produced just a few yards away." - Michelin Inspector

We love the pastoral unspoilt countryside around Pailherols. We have returned to the Auberge multiple times over probably more than 20 years and it has become our favourite place for celebrating special occasions. We have watched the operation grow from being a small auberge with a few rooms up to now where it is now having a Pool, Spa and considerable extra accomodation. Local property has been purchased, to accomplish the expension; renovation has been to exceedingly high standards everywhere High quality furnishings and tasteful decor prevail throughout, no money has been spared. Staffing is headed up by several actively involved family members; all are extremely pleasant and efficient. The main restaurant has an intimate atmosphere and the food is of very high quality and standard of presentation. We always look forward to the "Truffarde" - potato mash with the local young Cantal Cheese and onions, served to accompany the main meal dishes. We have enjoyed the eating experience at the Clos de Gentianes annexe. Althought the choice was somewhat limited, the quality and presentation was excellent. We like to stay at the Clos, and take a large ground floor room with access to a small private patio/garden area. We find this quiet and peaceful. From the Clos there are good views out over the small lake to the unspoilt surrounding countryside. Everywhere is clean and kempt...||Our recommendation is to do your research first about main restaurant closure arrangements and you will have a great stay...we feel that a rather too prominent somewhat critical review is really quite unfair..... ||We look forward to a further visit (maybe two), next year......

We had a charming room in Chalet St Jean which is situated just behind the main building, it had a balcony with a table and chairs with a view towards the Aubrac. It was clean and provided everything that was required for a short stay. The restaurant was excellent, with a good variety of dishes and menus for a short stay. We had their speciality, trout en croute, which needs to be ordered in advance and was well worth it.

We were recommended this auberge by a local cafe as we had checked into a dump of a B&B near the ski resort of Le Lioran. This was an amazing find in the midst of rolling hills of The Cantal region. We had a lovely spacious bedroom full of charm. Some people may find the profusion of knick knacks a bit much but it added to the slight excentricity of the decor. A beautiful snug bar with a wood burning fire was very welcoming. The food was amazing, some of the best I had experienced and fantastic value. We visited the spa facilities but were not able to make use of them having not packed a swim suit. The staff are very helpful and attentive. Breakfast was buffet but there was a good choice of tempting goodies. Only down side was that you could hear the bedrooms overhead, due to the wooden floors.

Mmm...... Did I read the negative reviews of this jewel of a find before I went? Yes. Did it make me want to change my mind? No. Was I glad when I arrived? Yes. Would I go again? Too damn right I would; we are off for a night on Wednesday!||I am not sure where the negative reviews can possibly come from. It would be very hard to find anything wrong here. The website is 'too good to be true' I hear you say. It can't possibly be as snuggly, as cosy, as chalet-esque as it looks. Well believe me it is. Our room on the top floor of the actual Auberge itself was the ensuite bedroom, Les Sapins I believe, as we had 2 children with us. It was cosy, warm, fur bed spreads, views over the little village which is extraordinarily pretty and we had no snow then! Can you sit on beautifully comfortable leather chairs by a roaring log fire in the biggest fireplace you have ever seen? Yes. The real trial was when we sat down to dinner. I must admit to being nervous. It was so lovely and I was so worried about the dream disappearing. But no, it was perfect of course. The table settings are divine. It is warm, comfortable, the food is fabulous, the waitress very nice and helpful. I cannot say what to favor on the menu as we all had different menus mixed and matched for both night we were there but I did particularly love the sweet potato and poached egg. It was utterly divine. The pool is fabulous and the jacuzzi is powerful!||If I could give this place 6 stars then I would. We love it so much we are going back the day after tomorrow for one night in the Chalet De Jean which we have yet to see so watch this space and I will let you know. Highly recommended.

We stayed in the Chalet Jean, authentic Cantal mountain accomodation. The room was spacious, comfy and 30 sec walk from the main hotel. The facilities are good - games room, swimming pools indoors and out, spa, sauna. The staff and owner are friendly and attentive. The food is very good both at the restuarant and the nearby Clos de Gentiane where we ate half-board. Local wines and products are to the fore.||Highly recommended.

L'auberge des Montagnes, has been for some time and probably always shall be my very favorite hideaway. |If you're looking for cosy , charm , warmth, romantic, cleanliness lovely professional owners and staff, in fact everything you could ask for. If you have got this far , then just don't hesitate book your stay , and you shall return as often as I have. |One other very important thing. The hotel restaurant is perfect in every way , authentic, delicious and extremely reasonably priced, all this in dining rooms to die for. |In brief, if you have ever dreamt of that perfect alpine retreat, well here it is at a quarter of the price. |

My wife and I have visited L'Auberge des Montagnes on 9 of the past 10 years (on 1 year there was no room at the inn). We have booked to go again in July. The beautiful residence in superbly decorated and maintained. The rooms are typically French in size but very well appointed and decorated. The restaurant is superb, worth the journey in it's own right.

Relaxing and charming place, beautiful surroundings and delicious food. I would have given 5 stars if we had not found ourselves with no water in the room in a empty hotel and no one answering the phone... it was bad luck (burst pipe) but the service could be improved nevertheless (need more staff at breakfast).
