Augill Castle, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, England - Explore & Book

"Take two feuding brothers, add in a small fortune, stir vigorously, allow to simmer and hey presto! - you get a folly castle. Augill was built in 1841 by John Bagot Pearson in a bid to outdo his younger sibling. He succeeded in some style, commissioning the castle as a weekend haunt in which to entertain his friends. It is a triumph of vanity over common sense: turrets, mullioned windows, castellated towers, wonderfully ornate lattice windows - the usual castle fare. It is also a trompe-l’œil of sorts: the house is mostly one room deep. A longish gravel drive leads up from the lane. Lawns and sheep-filled meadows encircle you, beyond the Pennines rise majestically. Inside you find enormous rooms, creaking floorboards, vibrant colours and an easy-going house-party feel. The music room - now the restaurant - has an open fire, a grand piano, and serves contemporary small plates and daily afternoon teas with a modern twist. The décor is ‘country house’, reassuringly traditional, but without the chintz. Highs An impressive folly castle with imperious countryside all around Superb for families, with lots of large rooms and handy baby equipment, a whole house for 8-10, plus loads of activities on site A relaxed, easy-going feel - owners Simon and Wendy are friendly and present Large shabbily authentic bedrooms and good home-cooked fare Some of Britain's most unspoilt walking; the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast footpaths pass close by Lows Couples wanting a grown-up break may want to avoid booking during the school holidays Room interiors are more shabby chic than perfectly polished No evening meals on Monday & Tuesday; be sure to give a few hours' warning if you'd like afternoon tea It's not cheap and the extras can soon add up WiFi and phone signal can be patchy, but you're here for a getaway!" - Tom Bell

Augill Castle | Best places to stay in the Lake District

"If you’ve always dreamt of staying in your very own castle, then Augill is the place for you. A 19th-century pile built in mock-medieval style, complete with turrets, towers and castellated ‘battlements’, it’s actually a very welcoming family home: owners Simon and Wendy Bennett have restored it with passion and care, and do their best to make it a relaxed, friendly home away from home. Rooms are suitably grand – many have four-poster beds, clawfoot baths and antique furniture – but it feels stylish rather than stuffy. More contemporary rooms are available in the estate’s old stables and cottages. " - Oliver Berry

Stayed at the Castle for our golden wedding anniversary and we had such a great weekend. Everything was just perfect our room was gorgeous with a big four poster bed and lovely soft duvet and pillows you could just sink into. We had afternoon tea that was delicious and you couldn’t have asked for anything more for breakfast. The evening meals were so tasty we really couldn’t have eaten any more. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and it was such a lovely peaceful place to be. Will definitely be going back.

It was so refreshing to stay at a hotel which did not feel so much as a hotel as a very relaxing country house where we did not have to worry about everyday living.|The environment is amazing - very different with unusual decoration, antiques etc. The room we stayed in had turrets and a leather sofa. We experienced breakfast, dinner and afternoon tea, and did not need to eat for a couple of days afterwards - very good!! The scenery round about is sublime even in November. We definitely will be going back.

My husband and I had a wonderful time. We've had afternoon tea in different locations and this one was the best with regard to both fare and location. The welcome was warm and friendly and we were each served a warm mushroom patty, mini prawn cocktail and a salmon sandwich. Add scones (lashings of clotted cream and jam!) and a selection of delicious sweet treats, with plenty of tea and coffee, in a super environment that was comfortable and relaxed. Beautiful location, lovely people, great service. Just perfect

Took advantage of an offer in the Daily Telegraph. This place is totally different. One can just wander around the public rooms and marvel at the artefacts, decor and ambience. I found it to be very cosy and comfortable. The bed was probably the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The food was excellent. Our hosts, Wendy and Simon were most helpful and attentive. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

An absolute gem of a find! We had a midweek overnight stay in this stunning castle the whole building is full of interesting features and a true feast for the eyes. We had a delicious 3 course meal in the dining room - everything on the menu sounded lovely. Our choices of falafel and ravioli were gorgeous, followed by two perfectly cooked steaks delightfully complemented by the wine. We finished off with two fab desserts and sampled the castles own gin which was crisp and refreshing. The rooms are all different with their own quirky interiors the bed and pillows were wonderfully comfortable ensuring a great nights sleep. Breakfast was a wholesome full English for us but there are plenty of other options available and a good selection of fruit and pastries to choose from too just what was needed to set us up for our onward journey.

What a fabulously quirky, welcoming place this is. Tucked away along a quiet country lane just south of the A66 near Brough, Augill Castle Is a charming folly with a highly entertaining history. Set in beautiful gardens with a delightful terrace that would be perfect for summer days. |The food was generous and all that you would expect of an afternoon tea. The service was friendly, informal and relaxed. Nothing was hurried and we were able to take as much time as we wanted. |The greeting at the entrance to the drive announced that this would be "unlike anywhere you have ever stayed before ". I agree!

We recently had the most wonderful weekend staying at Augill Castle and can't thank Wendy and her team enough. From start to finish everything was just perfect. We stayed 2 nights, had a wonderful afternoon tea for 2 on day 1 and superb 3 course meal on the evening of day 2. If you want a corporate experience this isn't the place to you, but if you can adapt to the Augill way as you drive down the from the main road then this is the place for you. We loved the decor, our room was simply magnificent, the grounds of the hotel offer a tranquil and relaxing place to just "be". We can't wait to get book another stay and can't thank Wendy as the ever present and wonderful host enough, along with her fabulous team.

I had a wonderful stay here through Brit Stops! The hosts were incredibly welcoming and attentive, making me feel right at home. I enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner and full English — every dish was excellent. Fantastic service and a truly lovely experience overall!

Yelp
My fellow Americans, Please consider staying at the incomparable Augill Castle when you find yourself in the delightful Lake District of England. http://www.stayinacastle.com/ It is set in an English folly - or small stone castle - and is totally and utterly amazing. We visited for three days in fall of 2009 and compare every other place we stay to Augill Castle's abundant charms - and none has yet reached the castle's sweeping hem. Every room is completely lovely and has its own personality. Top shelf linens abound with wonderful feather beds and crackling fireplaces. Freshly made cookies and a bottle of sweet sherry welcome you "home." The common rooms are warm and gorgeous. We booked dinner here for one stormy night and it was delicious. Breakfasts at this inn are delicious and abound with top quality choices. The setting is exquisite but leaving your Wellies at the door is encouraged, the food is scrumptious. Simon and family are wonderful hosts. It really does feel, for one brief shining moment, that one has his or her own Camelot to relish and then remember fondly - year after year. Treat yourself to a place of wonder . . . in Augill Castle. It's a dream.

Yelp
A quaint place. A castle turned into a B&B-stylish hotel with great food and a personal atmosphere. The furniture in the rooms is never the same. You actually wonder where can someone get all these old things ...

Yelp
First rate! My family and I stayed at Augill Castle for a night in August, 2016. We were very impressed. Beautiful setting, amazing ambience and friendly staff. Although it's not an "authentic" castle (it's a folly house, built by some rich guy in the 1800s) it still has the romantic feel of a castle and some history behind it. Two things impressed me in particular: 1. The laid back atmosphere. Having 2 young children, my wife and I were concerned that we'd need to keep a muzzle on them and tip-toe around the place. We couldn't have been more wrong. It was pleasantly informal. Casual dining, an honour bar, a free-use cinema room, a children's play-room - all made up for a very relaxing stay. 2. The sheer beauty of the castle itself. Impeccably decorated with very comfortable rooms. Although the price is a little higher than a typical B&B (200 pounds), it's totally reasonable considering what you're getting. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone. Definitely a highlight of our trip.
