Antwerp Is Europe's Effortlessly Cool Design Destination

"A hotel in a former Augustinian convent, known for its wellness space and restaurant by chef Nick Bril."

"Something of a sequel to Antwerp’s stylish Hotel Julien, August is a hotel with a little bit more ambition. It’s the first hotel project by the well-known Belgian architect and designer Vincent Van Duysen, who transformed this old Augustinian convent into a different kind of refuge, one whose sense of privacy and tranquility is only accentuated by its setting in the city’s verdant Green Quarter." - Mark Fedeli

Elements of the hotel are very nice; good architecture and interior design. The rest was disappointingly not as exceptional as the price might imply. The atmosphere felt aloof, not particularly welcoming; too self-consciously cool. Rooms are expensive, and they are nice but not remarkable. Everything else costs extra… and excessively so. To use the pool (oversized plunge pool) and sauna costs 85€ per hour. 165€ for two hours. To use a hotel pool is normally free of charge in decent hotels. Breakfast is extortionate (we went to a lovely cafe around the corner). The bar - the only area with atmosphere in which to enjoy the hotel you’ve paid for - was closed to all guests for a private event during our stay, which we weren’t informed of ahead of time and which significantly reduced the benefit to us of staying there. Ultimately, if one can’t fully enjoy a hotel either because the services it offers are too expensive or unavailable, it doesn’t justify a four or five star experience. Despite the nice design, I am disappointed to say that there are better hotels out there.

My wife and I stayed at Hotel August during a work trip and were particularly positively surprised, even though there have recently been some rather odd and negative reviews posted here on Tripadvisor. We had already stayed here once just after Covid and back then we were also quite satisfied.||Since we had an early meeting, we wanted something inside the Singel and close to the vibrant Zurenborg district. The hotel itself is in a quiet location. There is some passage from local residents, but it feels like a closed-off compound.||Unfortunately, The Jane is closed since the beginning of the year, but the restaurant at August itself has also a 15/20 rating on Gault & Millau, which is about the same level as some 1-star restaurants in Antwerp. We also had dinner there the evening before our stay, and it was very good.||The reception was handled by a rather young Dutch lad, but it was warm and professional, with great attention to detail. Our room was beautifully designed by top architect Vincent Van Duysen, with a high ceiling that created a sense of space and elegance. Everything was immaculate and spotless, truly in perfect condition.||The soaps and body lotion in the bathroom smelled wonderful. The brand (Maiwe) can easily be purchased in the shop just across the street from the hotel, which is convenient if you’d like to take some home.||Breakfast was very extensive and refined, with plenty of fresh and high-quality products. We did find it quite expensive, though, which is perhaps the only minor point of criticism.||In short, a wonderful place for anyone who wants to stay in Antwerp in style and complete tranquility.

I've stayed in a few categories of rooms here - and the smaller rooms are not worth staying in as they are cramped and noisy. However the larger rooms, especially the ones above the spa are absolutely amazing. I love the design and attention to aesthetics here. The service is friendly and the breakfast is great. The quality of the spa treatments can use some work, though.

We had to get out of bed and move rooms at 1.30am because the air conditioning could not be switched off and it was too noisy. The next room we were placed was considerably small and bathroom was tiny. It was so hot but we couldn’t switch the air conditioning on because of the noise. You can hear everything in the corridors, people knocking doors and doors banging. We only got an apology, as it was the most normal thing happening in that hotel. €125 per night in a hotel you cannot even have a rest. |Fridges in both rooms were not working.|Towels are so worn.|2 pillows per person and both are so bulky so no choice if you prefer a flatter pillow.

. Siutcases are put into the lift and you can search for the room by yourself. Only 10 guests at the same time have to wait for breakfast nearly 45 minutes, although there are 5 members of staff running araound. A Birchler Müsli ist some dry müsli afusioned with almondmilk. The french bread from the day before….. although we did pay for ist including room reservation, we decided to take breakfast in a cafe somewhere else. The undergroundgarage is badly signed and the openingcodes, you get from the reception, don‘t work. For every parking oder leaving we had to go to the reception for saveral times to open doors and gates. Wunderful design, horrible way of oranisation. It has nothing to do with a profesionel host.

This is definitely a beautiful looking hotel - the design is wonderful and the rooms are minimalist chic and beautifully designed - however, the lack of ambience and relatively uninterested service really let it down. We were really looking forward to staying here yet found the staff lacking in warmth and even politeness at points. We were never greeted on entering the hotel, despite saying hello to staff we saw. There was no sense that they were pleased to have you there, in fact at times there was a real sense of arrogance. The exception was a pleasant dark haired young woman who checked us in. There was no real ambience in the bar area, it felt very corporate at points despite being a beautiful area. We were not informed about the bikes for hire (although we found out about this). We didn't eat in the restaurant as there was no space but we did have bar food and it was expensive but delicious and the wines were also nice. I liked the area and enjoyed exploring the neighbourhood and the peace and quiet (the centre and theatre district is only 25 minutes walk away), however, I would not stay at the August again until their service and staff match the cost and quality of the hotel itself. We are lucky enough to have stayed in some amazing hotels and the thing that really elevates a hotel is its people and how they make their guests feel part of the experience. Sadly the August did not do this.

We had a really wonderful stay at this hotel. Loved the overall design and the design of the rooms. The room was spotless and comfortable, I enjoyed the lovely products in the bathroom. The breakfast and the breakfast service was especially good and we found the staff helpful and welcoming. The option of a few tram lines nearby so easy to navigate anywhere in the city.

This is a gorgeously renovated former monastery, in an interesting neighborhood, and every detail is perfect: lovely room, incredibly comfortable bed with beautiful linens, great amenities, gorgeous bathroom -- what more could one want? Also, an extraordinary number of top-quality breakfast choices, very good bar food for a light supper, and super nice staff throughout the hotel.
