Augustine’s of Portobello is something truly special. From the moment you walk in, you can feel there’s more to this space than just coffee and food ....there’s heart, soul, and a beautiful story behind it all. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and effortlessly stylish, with thoughtful touches everywhere you look. The food is vibrant and full of flavour clearly made with care and creativity. And the coffee? Absolutely top-tier. What makes Augustine’s stand out most is the sense of purpose woven through everything they do. It’s clear this café was created with intention not just as a place to eat and drink, but as a space that brings people together. There’s a real depth and meaning behind it, and it shows in the experience. A must-visit if you’re in Portobello, Dunedin or even if you’re not. It’s worth the trip.

What an amazing wee spot. Tucked away in Portobello, it's well worth the 30 min drive from Dunedin CBD. The menu is small but the food is fabulous. The bakery treats are just as good, and we also couldn't leave without grabbing some jars of preserves to take back home. Make sure you book. It's deservedly popular on the weekend and you don't want to go all that way and miss out. Highly recommended, and I hope they're still there the next time we're down this way.

I flew to Dunedin purposely on a Friday to get there for brunch. The food and coffee were great. We shared a table with a couple of local ladies and it was really nice to chat with them and find out about the area. It is a very small cafe but it never hurts to chat with strangers. It was a little out of the way and the weather was a bit wintery so could only be inside. The preserves and gifts for sale were excellent and very well priced. We really enjoyed our visit and next time I am in Dunedin we will definitely go back.

Hidden gem alright! Only 3 stars for atmosphere as there is little room for comfortably dining, however it was a drizzly day and everyone crammed inside. But the food was exceptional, so would happily eat crammed in anywhere! Great coffee as you would expect when you have great food. But really the best thing (besides the food), are the wonderful preserves of the most amazing combinations. Bottle peaches, plums, apricots, gosh even other fruit combinations preserved in so many varieties of liquors, Portugal, brandy....oh it endless. Also local ceramics, beautifully made. Oh so worth the drive out. So very good, BUT hard to find, not alot of signs on the main road (just as well because of the small seating area) and we had to ask a suspicious local. 😂

My Husband, baby and I made a special effort to drive out today while our toddler was at Kindy. Beautiful birdsong in the misty rain and baby loved looking at all the chutney and jam jars along the room. Beautiful spot you have created in your home, friendly staff and delicious custard Danish and scones. Would love to try the menu food another time. We arrived around 1.15pm and no issues getting a table. Definitely keen to come explore on a sunny day too. Thank you!

Hidden gem with delicious fresh good! We walk-in on a Friday from our way back to Dunedin after visiting the Albatross center and what a surprise! We had the waffles and the toast of the day and they were both fantastic. The combination of flavors was delicious. It’s more on the pricey side but totally worth it. The staff was nice too. We didn’t have any trouble parking as we arrived around 13:30 but it was probably busy at noon. We highly recommend this cafe, it’s one of the best we have tried in NZ!

Stunning hidden gem. We found this magical place on the way to Otago Peninsula. One of the best coffee we have ever tried in NZ. Everything was perfect, from the atmosphere the food, the coffee, the dog, the horses. We totally fell in love with this place. Highly recommended!

Dunedin's best kept secret, located not far away from the centre of picturesque suburb of Portobello at Otago Peninsula. Beside excellent foods, I like this place because it's very green. It's hidden among the trees and garden. It's very peaceful, far from the hussle and bussle of the traffic. You can walk-in on Friday but for Saturday and Saturday, you need to make a reservation. Most likely you will need to share a table with someone unless you come in a big group. You can also sit outside. The staff is very friendly. The food is very fresh and delicious. They have different menu every week, so you can always try something new. They also sell fruit jams and preserves. It's highly recommended place to have lunch with friends and family, especially if you are visiting the area. They truly serve the food for both the soul and stomach. I will come back here for sure!
